Every Chipotle Protein Currently On The Menu (Including The New Chipotle Honey Chicken), Ranked For 2025

chipotle_protein(1024x450)
Uproxx

There are two types of fast food restaurants: the kind that rely on a regular cadence of new menu items to attract repeat customers, and those few chains that keep their menu carefully curated, rarely changing things up in favor of focusing on quality ingredients and preparation to win fans. Chipotle is the latter type, but every once in a while, the brand will add a new protein option to its core class, shaking up the menu and inspiring new burrito and taco builds.

Oftentimes, these limited offerings are better than a lot of the menu staples, which is why it’s imperative that when Chipotle launches a new protein, we embark on a re-ranking of every available protein on the menu. So, in honor of Chipotle’s new Honey Chicken, we did just that — re-tasting and re-ranking every protein option available, all to help you craft the best meal possible.

As always, to get the best sense of what these meats actually taste like, we sampled each completely devoid of additional ingredients. Just pure meat, which garnered some well-deserved side eye from the employees. But hey, we’re willing to look like total weirdos so that you don’t have to.

Here is every protein option available at Chipotle in 2025, ranked from least to most essential.

7. Sofritas

Dane Rivera

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:

Chipotle only has one plant-based protein so we’re sorry that we’re ranking the Sofritas as the worst protein option at Chipotle but… well it is! What do you want us to do, lie? If you don’t eat meat you’re not at a total loss at Chipotle and we’d encourage you go the “veggie burrito” route if you want the best experience rather than order these, at least you get free guacamole!

The Sofritas feature a nice blend of pepper and cumin that helps to cut through any add-ons, no matter how heavy. The vibe is savory and somewhat akin to meat but our major sticking point is the texture. It’s wet, chunky, and chewy to the point of being distracting. Tofu bits make up the bulk of this protein and we shouldn’t be the ones to that have to tell you that tofu is best enjoyed fried!

The Bottom Line:

Way too wet and chewy. We wish Chipotle would offer a true Mexican vegetarian option like calabacitas (sautéed squash, corn, tomatoes, onions and pepper) or nopales (cactus) in its place.

6. Carnitas

Carnitas

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:

Look, we love Chipotle here, that should be clear. But straight up, Chipotle’s Carnitas are the worst I’ve ever had. Now granted, as an LA native and someone of Mexican heritage I grew up surrounded by amazing taquerias and cooks. I could get on my high horse about this and argue whether or not these are “proper” carnitas, but I won’t. All I will say is that this protein option is lacking many of the aspects that make carnitas delicious.

Chipotle’s carnitas are over-salted, fatty and sinewy where they should be tender and juicy, and dry as a bone. I’ll give them the flavor — I’m tasting a nice blend of cumin, pepper, oregano, a touch of salt, and a bit of sweetness, but the rough and dry chew is so off-putting that no amount of flavor could ever make up for it.

The Bottom Line:

Skip. Chipotle’s Carnitas are an insult to the real thing.

5. Guacamole

Dane Rivera

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:

We don’t consider Guacamole a protein option but Chipotle kind of does, so we’re going to go ahead and rank it. With its only two grams of protein per serving, it sucks as a legitimate protein option, but flavorwise? It’s hard to find something to dislike here, this is solid fast food guacamole, name me a brand that comes even close to how legit this is.

The Chipotle Guacamole features a red onion-dominant flavor, the occasion bit of fresh jalapeño, creamy and ripe avocado, and just a hair too much lime juice. Is it the best guacamole I’ve ever had? No, I’ve made better, but for a fast food restaurant this is pretty damn good and very authentic.

What really sells me on it is that diced jalapeño, which offers a nice subtle kick of heat that lingers on the palate.

The Bottom Line:

A bad substitute for meat, but pretty damn delicious.

4. Steak

Dane Rivera

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:

The biggest issue with Chipotle’s Steak is that its incredibly inconsistent. When it’s good, it’s great, offering tender chunks of beefy steak with a delicious caramelized outer and a wonderful blend of black pepper, salt, and cumin. When it’s bad — which is more often than not — it’s grainy, chewy, and tough.

So it’s a gamble here. You’re going to have to use your eyes. If it looks fresh, order it, if not, it’s smart to have a second option at the ready.

The Bottom Line:

All it would take is a bit of quality control to make this protein go from mid to top-tier.

3. Chicken

Dane Rivera

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:

Chipotle’s Chicken is overall the most consistent protein option on the menu. We’ve never had this one and been disappointed, though it’s not our favorite. The chicken has a delicious flame-grilled flavor with some ancho chili smokiness with a savory finish courtesy of adobo sauce. Because Chipotle uses chicken thighs rather than breasts, the chew is always tender and juicy, yet lean and not fatty.

This is some high-quality bird; you get all the flavor of dark meat without any of the off-putting chewiness.

The Bottom Line:

Flavorful, flame-grilled chicken and Chipotle’s most consistently tasty protein option. You can never go wrong with the chicken.

2. Barbacoa

Dane Rivera

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:

Oh, how the mighty have fallen! Chipotle’s Barbacoa used to be our favorite protein option, and the reason it’s now at number two is not that the quality has dropped in any way, there is just a new meat in the rotation and we like it a bit better.

What we love about the barbacoa is that it’s melt-in-your-mouth tender and exploding with flavor. Made from shoulder-cut meat, the Barbacoa has this silky, sumptuous quality that makes it more savory and incredibly satisfying.

Aside from the beefy notes, you’ll taste hints of oregano, clove, bay leaf, black pepper, and adobo. Flavor aside, what makes this one such a winner is that it complements every dish on the menu. Bowls are more satisfying with it, burritos more epic, tacos more savory — it’s a near-perfect protein option and the best pick for beef lovers.

The Bottom Line:

Once our number one pick leaves the menu, barbacoa will reign supreme once again, but until then it’ll have to languish at number two.

1. Chipotle Honey Chicken

Dane Rivera

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:

The Chipotle Honey Chicken (yes, ‘chipotle’ is part of its name) is the brand’s newest and best protein option. First debuted at the beginning of this month, our initial impressions of the dish was that it was at least in the running for the brand’s best protein option ever, and now a few weeks and a few taste tests later, we’re willing to confirm that this is hands down the absolute best.

The Chipotle Honey Chicken features a deep and complex earthy and herbaceous flavor, with some mild zesty heat, floral pepper notes, a lot of oregano, and a dry smokiness with a deep sweet finish. Like Chipotle’s other chicken option, the meat here is tender enough to melt in your mouth.

If you haven’t tried this one yet, get yourself to Chipotle ASAP.

The Bottom Line:

Chipotle’s best protein option is only available for a limited time. It’s so good that when they discontinue it, riots will likely ensue. Chipotle, if you’re reading, take that very much as a threat.

Petey USA Tries To Catch ‘The Milkman’ In The Act In His Gonzo New Video

There’s this old joke (or rather, a series of old jokes) about “the milkman.” Playing on men’s fears of their partners’ infidelities, back when middle class wives frequently stayed at home, the joke supposed that a milk delivery man could take advantage of a husband’s absence to avail himself of the stay-at-home wife’s “hospitality.”

Petey USA makes excellent use of this joke in his new video, “The Milkman,” which revolves around the supposed love triangle, while hilariously putting Petey himself in all three roles: The jilted husband, the unfaithful wife, and the opportunistic milkman (as well as the issue of the alleged affair, “Zeke”). As the former, he tries to get proof that dirt’s been done under the roof he pays for, setting more and more elaborate, Wile E. Coyote-esque traps to catch them in the act. As the latter two, he feigns innocence and ignorance. It’s a clever play, because in one of those old jokes, the punchline was that the butt’s child looked more like the milkman. With Petey in all four roles, it’s truer than ever.

The cheeky indie singer has been promoting his new EP, The Closest Thing To Being Over Is Going On, with a string of similarly upbeat singles including “The River” and “Model Train Town.” He’s also recently completed an acoustic tour with Medium Build, with his tour for the EP kicking off in May.

Jessie Reyez Goes From Office Siren To Action Heroine In Her Violent ‘NYB’ Video

Stylized, revenge-oriented violence appears to be all the rage in women’s pop and R&B lately. A slew of recent videos have everyone from Ari Lennox to Joy Crookes channeling their inner Uma Thurman, and the latest to join the trend is Canadian star Jessie Reyez.

In the video for her toe-tapping new single “NYB,” Jessie goes from sultry office siren to action heroine to take out the Worst Boss Ever. “NYB” — which stands for “New York Baby” — is about a geographic fling, but the accompanying visual plays out more like the upcoming John Wick spinoff, Ballerina.

After catching the middle-aged middle manager in the act of threatening her colleague with a pistol, Reyez leaps into action, MacGuyvering a corded office phone into a meteor hammer. After hiding out in a bathroom, she confronts him in his office in a martial arts battle involving a mounted samurai sword, a fire axe, and the creative use of a stapler, resulting in one bloody finale.

“NYB” appears on Reyez’s newly released album, Paid In Memories, which is out today, supported by the singles “Jeans” featuring Miguel, “Shut Up” with Big Sean, “Ridin” with Lil Wayne, “Just Like That” featuring Ari Lennox, and “Psilocybin & Daisies.”

Anycia, GloRilla, And Karrahbooo’s Video For ‘Never Need’ Shows That They Are Not Desperate Damsels In Distress

Anycia and 4Batz flaunted their relationship on the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards. Although the “Back Outside” rapper is seemingly wrapped up in love, she wants the world to know she will maintain her sense of self. On her latest single, “Never Need,” Anycia tapped GloRilla and Karrahbooo to double down on her stance. Within the record’s official video, all three women step into their confidence as they deliver their sharp lines.

The unapologetic track, produced by JetsonMade, could very easily be dismissed as a man-hating anthem. But, upon further inspection it is a forewarning to never relinquish control–especially not to the wrong romantic partner.

GloRilla’s verse personified this as she rapped: “Ho, stand the f*ck up and stop cryin’ ’bout that n**** / B*tch, go outside instead of spyin’ on these n****s / B*tch, I’m a boss, I ain’t relyin’ on these n****s / To be honest, I’ll never stop lyin’ to these n****s / Young turnt b*tch, ain’t never been no f*ckin’ leech / I ain’t lookin’ for no husband, I just want a freak.”

Yes, the ladies want to love and to be loved on. But their survival is not tethered to a man. Prince Charming is cool, but the damsel is not in distress. Plus she has a hefty bank account and supportive community around her.

In a statement to Billboard, Anycia discussed the inspiration behind the song. “I wanted to make something that really spoke to women standing on their own, not just in relationships but in every part of life,” she said. “Man, I said ‘Let me find the most disrespectful women I can to get on this track with me!’ They made it even more raw and unapologetic.”

Watch the “Never Need” video above. Anycia’s upcoming Gangsta Grillz mixtape with DJ Drama, Grady Baby is due out soon.

Will Smith Details Some ‘Hard Times’ With Teyana Taylor On His New Album, ‘Based On A True Story’

Will Smith’s first album in 20 years has arrived. On Based On A True Story, the superstar returns to his roots for 14 new tracks of uplifting, motivational, storytelling rap. A prime example: “Hard Times (Smile),” the sixth track on the list, which features Teyana Taylor.

In the song, producers Lexoskeleton and OmArr blend jazz, funk, and soul samples to give Smith a spiritual backdrop for rhymes detailing some of the “hard times” he’s made it through, as well as encouraging the listener to have resilience through their own.

Smith’s return to music comes as a hard reset of his career, which stalled out in the wake of the 2022 Oscars, where the rapper-turned-actor infamously slapped the hell out of comedian host Chris Rock after a tasteless joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. The former Fresh Prince saw mixed reviews for his next handful of film projects, but bounced back thanks to Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

He kicked off his return to music with the Kanye West-inspired “Bulletproof,” debuted during a performance at the 2024 BET Awards. Following up with “Work Of Art,” the Joyner Lucas reunion “Tantrum,” and the Big Sean collaboration “Beautiful Scars,” it looks like Will’s taking the new career transition seriously, with a full tour planned for later this year.

Based On A True Story is out now via Slang. You can find more info here.

Kali Uchis Finds Peace In Both The ‘Sunshine & Rain…’ On Her Vulnerable ‘Sincerely’ Single

The wait for a new Kali Uchis album is coming to an end. In May, the Grammy Award-winning singer’s new English-language album, Sincerely, will hit streaming platforms.

Today (March 28), Uchis shares the forthcoming project’s lead single, “Sunshine & Rain…” The raw record continues in Kali’s profoundly delicate songwriting and even gentler vocal production. While “Sunshine & Rain…” at its core is about romantic empathy during a relationships peaks and valleys, Uchis’ voice is a warm sensation felt only from a constant ray of light.

“I do nothing in the dark ’cause I believe in karma / When will I forgive my heart for always getting me in trouble / God knows I play my part and always understands me / So used to everyone misunderstanding / Wish I didn’t let my emotions run the way they ran me / Gave you my heart to hold, will I end up empty-handed / Riding through the storm brought me much-needed clarity,” she sings.

In the chorus, Kali delicately emphasizes the strength that comes along with understanding, singing, “Through sunshine and rain, as seasons change / We all need somebody that makes the Earth feel heavenly / Maybe I’ll be that somebody ’cause you’re that someone to me / Through sunshine and rain, as seasons change.”

During a chat with 10 Magazine, Uchis let supporters know that Sincerely was birthed from a “life-altering event.”

“The album is about the complexities of life and finding ways to find joy in life despite the world,” she said. “Finding ways to appreciate every moment and not take life for granted. Treat every day special. It’s my most existential and honest work. It’s definitely the most beautiful body of work to me, and it’s going to be, for me, the most meaningful and impactful.”

But “Sunshine & Rain…” demonstrates that she’s found a way to channel those debilitating emotions into an evolved set of songs rather than banishing herself into void of bitterness.

Lucy Dacus Moves To The Middle Of The Road On ‘Forever Is A Feeling’

lucy_dacus_2(1024x450)
Shervin Lainez/Merle Cooper

Among her many musical attributes, Lucy Dacus’ greatest quality might be her voice. It’s a uniquely expressive and timeless-sounding instrument. When she sings, she can emote in a way that feels both operatic and restrained, like Edith Piaf on SSRI’s. It’s what has enabled Dacus, at her best, to put over songs that lyrically sketch intimate scenes that read as relatable and lived-in on the page, but as music take on the scope of grand, life-changing melodrama. It can evoke the intensity of falling love for the first time, or experiencing the worst heartache in your life, or even both sensations simultaneously.

But when Dacus’ songs don’t quite hit the mark, that voice can also hem her in. Dacus does not typically shout or whisper — that voice pretty much sticks to the same smoldering frequency for every occasion. It’s up to the music surrounding that voice, therefore, to supply some dynamics. On some of her most loved songs, like “Night Shift” or “I Don’t Want To Be Funny Anymore,” Dacus’ melancholic vocals are complemented by loud guitars, like sweet jelly matched by gritty, crunchy peanut butter. But when the music veers into what I’ll call the “Triple A Radio Zone” — the folk-inflected soft rock that populates the public radio affiliate in your town — the effect can be like eating a heavy lunch or drinking a Bloody Mary for breakfast. That mellifluous purr will lull you into an untimely slumber.

Such is the case with Forever Is A Feeling, Dacus’ debut for Geffen Records and the first record from any of the Boygeniuses since their magical run of arena shows and Grammy Awards a few years back. There are advantages and disadvantages to being the earliest post-zeitgeist canary in the coal mine. Pluses include a considerable media push, with late-night talk show appearances and a glowing profile in The New Yorker that describes her supergroup as “a kind of generational loadstone, a flash of hope in an era defined by catastrophic backsliding.”

The potential downside, however, is that it’s awfully tough to follow up on the “headlining Madison Square Garden” chapter of your career. Expectations, naturally, are going to be sky-high, particularly when you’re the one putting out music first. And yet Dacus does not appear overly concerned with knocking her audience’s socks off. Forever Is A Feeling has a noticeably mellower pitch than her previous records. Dacus’ recent admission to a relationship with bandmate Julien Baker was, perhaps, inevitable given the homey and grateful love songs that populate the record. It’s possible Boygenius’ obsessive fan base would have heard a line like “If the Devil’s in the details / then God is in the gap in your teeth” (from “For Keeps”) and not immediately think of Baker. But it’s unlikely, just as they would have picked up on the part in “Modigliani” — named after the famous 20th century Italian painter and sculptor — where Dacus swoons, “I like watching you win over a new crowd / You can make ’em go wild, you can leave ’em spellbound / But you will never be famous to me.” To Dacus’ credit, these references don’t feel exploitative, but rather like extensions of the diaristic songs she has always written. Though she, unsurprisingly, also seems far more contented now.

Personal fulfillment, of course, is what one would wish for any person, even a singer-songwriter known for sometimes conveying extreme emotional distress. All the public can reasonably hope for from an artist are tunes that stick in your head and linger in your heart. In that department, Forever Is A Feeling is considerably less eternal that the album’s starry-eyed title. Produced mostly by Dacus with the assistance of the suddenly ubiquitous Blake Mills — he’s also on recent releases by Japanese Breakfast and Perfume Genius — Forever resides in a frustratingly mushy mid-tempo lane outfitted with twinkly string sections and gentle guitar strums and fluttery piano licks. The music, while well-crafted, is dully repetitive, particularly nondescript fare like “Talk” and “Come Out” that could have appeared on any of the countless Boygenius-inspired singer-songwriter releases from the past few years. That goes double for the light shuffle “Bullseye,” featuring a court-ordered cameo from Hozier, the current grand poobah of the Triple A Radio Zone.

It wasn’t always like this. At the risk of sounding like a broken record when it comes to criticizing new albums by indie stars, I couldn’t help but think back to Dacus’ 2016 debut, No Burden, which established her as an easy-to-root-for underdog. On that album, she was often compared to Courtney Barnett, the sly Australian singer-songwriter with a hankering for heavy, quasi-grunge guitars. And, lo and behold, No Burden songs like the heavy-riffing “Troublemaker Doppelgänger” practically sound like Queens Of The Stone Age relative to the rather tepid music Dacus is making now.

Artists evolve, surely, and I don’t expect or want anyone to simply reiterate by rote the sound of their earliest records. But something approaching the energy of “Troublemaker Doppelgänger” is sorely needed to liven up the sleepy Forever. The penultimate track, “Most Wanted Man,” comes closest — a country rocker with Big Star guitar chords, it sounds way looser than the rest of the record, with Dacus reminiscing about splurging for a $700 hotel room at the Ritz and “living the dream before we fully pass our prime.”

Forever otherwise is stuck in a rather boring musical rut. Which only makes some of the lyrical misfires stand out more egregiously. On Boygenius’ The Record, Dacus was dinged for an infamous lyric about Leonard Cohen and his “horny poetry,” which sounded more like an attempt to create a popular meme than a standout song. This habit, unfortunately, continues on Forever Is A Feeling, with my least favorite line coming from the otherwise solid single “Best Guess,” where Dacus repurposes an old Sunday School nursery rhyme with cringey results: “Here is the church / Here is the steeple / You were looking for saints / but you only found people.” I’m also not a fan of the part in “Ankles” where Dacus describes a sexual interlude thusly: “So bite me on the shoulder / pull my hair / and let me touch you where I want to- / there, there, there, there, there.” I’m sorry but this simply is too, too, too, too, too much information.

Dacus is a smart, perceptive artist, and she’s currently navigating the trickiest part of her career. If Forever Is A Feeling feels less than assured, it might be chalked up, charitably, as a valuable learning experience. Here is an example of what not to do. What’s next is bound to be better.

Ariana Grande Continues Her Cinematic, ‘Eternal Sunshine’-Inspired Journey In Her ‘Brighter Days Ahead’ Short Film

Happy Brighter Days Ahead day to those who celebrate: Today (March 28) brought the release of Ariana Grande’s new deluxe album, Eternal Sunshine Deluxe: Brighter Days Ahead. The midnight release was followed this morning by a new short film, written and directed by Grande alongside Christian Breslauer.

As Grande indicated in a teaser shared ahead of the video’s release, the visual sees her, in character as Peaches, returning to Brighter Days Inc., where she had an Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind-style memory wipe in her “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)” video. This time, though, she’s significantly older.

Grande previously said of the deluxe album, “It’s funny because I really thought that it was just a very concise body of work that it what it is, and I think, forever in my head, Eternal Sunshine is that album. But, with time, I’m like, ‘Oh, maybe there are some new ideas that could be included.’ But yeah, I’ve been writing a lot, and maybe there’s some more, but I would like to do a deluxe at some point.”

Billie Eilish Makes Her ‘Obvious’ Pick For The Best Female Rapper Ever

Any time somebody is named the greatest of all time at something, debate will inevitably follow. Billie Eilish, though, is confident when it comes to her pick for the best female rapper of all time.

On a new episode of Complex’s GOAT Talk that was shared yesterday (March 27), Eilish declared, “Nicki Minaj is, like, obviously […] Nicki is GOAT, for sure.”

Some Eilish fans were annoyed with Minaj in 2023, as it was believed that Eilish was set to feature on Minaj’s then-upcoming album Pink Friday 2. But, Minaj ended up just sampling Eilish’s “When The Party’s Over” for “Are You Gone Already.” After the album dropped, Minaj shared flowers and a card she got from Eilish and Finneas, with the card reading, “Congratulations and thank you for letting us into your world!” Minaj captioned her post, “Thank you for making this moment so special for me.”

Elsewhere in the video, Eilish discussed some picks for her “GOAT song that feels like your life anthem,” mentioning Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face,” “G.U.Y.,” and “Alejandro.” She also revealed the best gift she’s ever received (her first car, a matte black Dodge Challenger, from her label), her best album to cry to (Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell), and more.
