‘The Penguin’ Season 2? Everything To Know About Max’s ‘The Batman’ Spinoff Series And The Reason It Hasn’t Been Renewed Yet

the penguin
max

When was the last time there wasn’t a Batman show on TV? This is not a hypothetical question: I’m genuinely asking. There’s rarely been a time when Gotham wasn’t being depicted on the small screen, whether in live action (Batman, Gotham, Birds of Prey) or animation (Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Batman: The Brave and the Bold). There’s even been Batman-related shows without Batman, including Max‘s The Penguin.

Season 1 was a Golden Globe-winning, critically-admired hit, but will The Penguin return for a second season? Here’s everything we know.

Plot

Let’s begin with the basics: Colin Farrell made such a strong impression in Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman as Oz Cobb (not Oswald Cobblepot) that a spin-off series on Max was greenlit. Developed by Lauren LeFranc, The Penguin follows Cobb’s rise to power in the criminal underworld of Gotham.

Without spoiling anything specific, the season 1 finale leaves open the possibility of more episodes. But as of April 2025, The Penguin has not been renewed for season 2. There’s a good reason for this — and it has to do with Robert Pattinson. “We’re talking about doing the second season of The Penguin,” Reeves told MTV News, “but my big priority is to get The Batman Part II shooting and going. And then it’ll be exciting where we’ll go from there.” (The Batman sequel is currently scheduled to come out in 2027.)

Showrunner LeFranc shared with ScreenRant that The Penguin was always intended to be a limited series, but if “there’s more stories to tell there, for sure, if we can find the right idea or the right characters.

Farrell doesn’t sound too hyped about doing another season (“I’m open to it, but it’s not something concerning me”), but Cristin Milioti, who gives a show-stealing performance as Sofia Falcone, has some ideas for season 2.

“It just seemed like there are infinite possibilities of where she could go. Obviously I would want to see her get out of Arkham. That’s like number one. I don’t want her in there. So I want to see her get out there, and exact revenge. Maybe now she would be more of a loose cannon, because before it was pretty focused on him and gaining power, but depending on what happens to her in there, it could be an even larger target. I would love to explore that.”

If it means more of Milioti in Sofia’s wild outfits, then go for it!

Cast

Besides Farrell, season 1 also starred Rhenzy Feliz as Cobb’s right-hand man Vic, Deirdre O’Connell as Cobb’s mother Francis, and Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone. Seriously, she’s the best reason to watch The Penguin. The rest of the cast included Michael Kelly (Johnny Viti), Shohreh Aghdashloo (Nadia Maroni), Clancy Brown (Salvatore Maroni), James Madio (Milos Grapa), Scott Cohen (Luca Falcone), Michael Zegen (Alberto Falcone), Carmen Ejogo (Eve Karlo), and Theo Rossi (Dr. Julian Rush).

Release Date

Since it hasn’t even been renewed yet, The Penguin season 2 does not have a release date.

In lieu of a season 2 trailer, please enjoy Sofia becoming a boss.

What’s Popular On Streaming Now

The Last of Us Pedro Pascal Bella Ramsey
HBO

Every single week, our TV and film experts will list the most important ten streaming selections for you to pop into your queues. We’re not strictly operating upon reviews or accrued streaming clicks (although yes, we’ve scoured the streaming site charts) but, instead, upon those selections that are really worth noticing amid the churning sea of content. There’s a lot out there, after all, and your time is valuable.

10. AdolescenceNetflix series

Discussions are ongoing between Brad Pitt’s Plan B and this streaming service on how to bring a second season to life. This will almost certainly be an anthologized approach since Jamie Miller’s story is said and done. Writer and co-creator Stephen Graham will be as satisfied as millions of viewers when this news finally becomes official, and the juggernaut can then continue despite the “limited series” label that could soon feel like disappearing ink.

9. Devil May CryNetflix series

This wickedly fun animated adaptation proves that a sharp-dressed frontman rarely goes out of style. It doesn’t hurt that, in this case, the role is filled by a roguish, aesthetically-pleasing demon hunter who gallantly conquers high-octane action sequences while saving humanity with a flourish.

8. Dying For Sex – FX series streaming on Hulu

With a title like Dying For Sex, people were bound to be curious, and the series delivers both bitingly funny and deadly serious goods while following Molly Kochan’s stories from the same-named podcast and Screw Cancer: Becoming Whole memoir. And although Molly is no longer of this mortal coil, her account on experiencing a sexual revolution following a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis will live on. Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Rob Delaney star.

7. The White Lotus – HBO series streaming on Max

The third odyssey full of miserable privileged people has come to an end, and of course Greg is still standing. The deaths in this season were a gut punch, and the Ratliff family will probably never know what hit them, but ideally, at least one of them will pay a visit to the fourth chapter of Mike White’s satiric anthology series, and please, somebody throw that damn blender in the ocean because I never want to think about Saxon and his protein shakes again. Also, has Aimee Lou Wood conquered the world yet? Give her all the roles.

6. The Handmaid’s TaleNetflix series

Gilead’s Most Wanted is gearing up to make a final push for the resistance in the Elisabeth Moss-starring Hulu flagship series. A trailer teases a new “reformer” phase for Serena Joy while June and her fellow rebels are gearing up to make sure that Commander Lawrence regrets this entire sordid societal experiment. In the meantime, series creator Bruce Miller is already working on sequel series The Testaments, which follows Margaret Atwood’s companion novel taking place in a crumbling future version of Gilead.

5. The Life ListNetflix movie

Netflix is churning out romcom films like theaters in the 1990s, but instead of shelling out double digits at the multiplex, you can find comfort on your couch while watching a movie that probably would have starred Kate Hudson and an inexplicably shirtless Matthew McConaughey a few decades ago. Sofia Carson stars as Alex Rose, who finds herself on a self-discovery journey after the death of her mother (Connie Britton). She conditions the inheritance upon fulfilling the “life list” dreamed up by her teenage self. This ordeal includes choosing between dudes because, duh, it’s a romcom.

4. The BondsmanPrime Video/Amazon series

The entire first season dropped at once, and despite an abundance of content, viewers zeroed in on this horror-ish series and gobbled the entire thing up. Now, the wait for more begins to see if Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon) will choose to accept an even weightier deal than the one he had with Satan. Will Hub’s demon-plagued fate continue? Showrunner Eric Oleson and Bacon admit to being “evil” while engineering that cliffhanger, and good on ’em.

3. The Last Of Us – HBO series streaming on Max

Video game adaptations are on a streak, and viewers revisited the show’s debut while waiting for the next season of the acclaimed (and renewed for more) series with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey back as Joel and Ellie following their quest through the Cordyceps-plagued United States. They will be joined by Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, and ideally, the toxic fandom can give it a rest and actually focus on the experience of watching these survivors thrive even while inside and outside peril continues.

2. MobLandParamount Plus series

You can’t go wrong with Tom Hardy as a “handsome” and “dangerous” fixer for Guy Ritchie’s latest gangster-fueled project co-starring Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, and Paddy Considine, who is here to Irish the joint up. Soon, Hardy will star in Netflix’s Havoc film, so fans of the Venom star will be feasting, even if he doesn’t show up for the Peaky Blinders movie, but surely, Alfie Solomons can spare a few onscreen moments to help Tommy Shelby during a WWII-set story? C’mon.

1. The PittMax series

The 15-episode season has been building to a steady panic-attack clip, and do not fear because there will be more of Dr. Robby and his colleagues, who will pick up their next shift on the Fourth of July weekend. That isn’t the official release date, by the way, simply the setting when we will probably see fireworks injuries floating through the trauma unit that only just finished processing dozens of mass-shooting victims. Viewers did turn out in droves to see Noah Wyle return to his medical-drama stomping grounds, and word of mouth helped this series build numbers on a weekly basis. Max has a hit on its hands, and they’re running quickly with that success.

Drake Has Seemingly Purchased Yet Another One Of Pharrell Williams’ Old Chains, Thanks To Kid Cudi

Apparently, Drake does live what he raps about. On Travis Scott’s “Meltdown,” Drake taunted his longtime foe Pusha T. “Melting down the chains that I bought from yo’ boss,” raped Drake referencing Pharrell Williams.

Well, based on his latest Instagram, Drake’s not done collecting pieces previously owned by Williams. In a post uploaded to his finsta (fake Instagram account), Drake flashed Williams’ N.E.R.D. brain pendant chain.

Although Drake did not include a caption on the post, fans quickly tied the flashy necklace to Williams. However, the details on how Drake acquired the chain remained unclear. But in a report published by Complex, the outlet revealed the original Jacob & Co. 14k white gold, rose gold, and a diamond pendant was recently sold at auction.

According to the platform, the piece sold for $243,000 when Kid Cudi (the previous owner) listed it as part of his personal auction “On Another Planet.” That marked a significant dip from when the archival item piece was initially listed on Joopiter for $720,000 in 2022.

Despite Drake and Pusha T’s tension, don’t expect Williams to be angered by the acquisition. When asked about Drake’s past purchase Williams pretty much said just that to GQ.

“When you let things go, a huge part of it is actually letting go,” he said. “Not just of the physical item, but letting go of your connection to what it’s supposed to mean, or the memory. You’re literally letting them go. That was the purpose. It’s like when people sell something and they go, ‘I just want to make sure you take care of it because this is my baby.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, no.’ This is not my baby. That’s why I’m letting it go.”

Lana Del Rey Suggested Her ‘The Right Person Will Stay’ Album’s Title And Release Date Has Changed In A Now-Deleted Video

Lana Del Rey appears to have a case of the creative jitters. Yesterday (April 11), the songwriter shared her latest single, “Henry, Come On.” For all intents and purposes, the tune served as Lana’s forthcoming album The Right Person Will Stay’s lead track. However, the plan has seemingly been modified.

In a now-deleted Instagram reel (archived by Rolling Stone), Lana Del Rey suggested that she changed her forthcoming album’s title and release date.

“You know it’s not going to come on time, right,” she said. “Should I even tell you that the name changed again? Should I tell you that now, while you’re so happy that you even have a song? Yeah, maybe I’ll wait.”

Back in November 2024, Lana declared the 13 song project, which is set to feature production from Jack Antonoff, Drew Erickson, and Luke Roberts, would drop on May 21. Since removing the reel, Lana hasn’t shared a new album title or expected release date. But to ease fans’ anxiety, Lana has posted song snippets on her Instagram page as well as in her Instagram stories.

With Lana Del Rey confirmed to perform at Stagecoach 2025 later this month, supported expect clarity before she closes her set. However, the updates could arrive earlier than then.

Missy Elliott did not headline Coachella 2025. But, “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” rapper sure as hell could’ve.

Yesterday (April 11), Missy Elliott made her official debut at the revered music festival. But it as the audience that needed to prepare for what they were going to witness. Instead of a traditional stage entrance (viewable here), Missy pulled a page out of the Transformers comic series. From what appeared to be just a supa fly car, Missy emerged. Those in the crowd and users online were stunned by the producer’s transition. Many praised the innovative display across various social media platforms.

“She always stuns! She’s such an icon,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter).

“Missy Elliot is an icon!!’ Now she’s transformer misdemeanor Elliot 🔥,” penned another.

“She always doing some kind of transformer thing 😭,” chimed another pointing out Missy’s past references to the intergalactic aliens.

From her entrance to the set design and supporting visuals, it is abundantly clear Missy spared no expense for her set. Back in November 2024 when Coachella’s lineup was revealed, Missy teased she would bring something “out of this world.”

“The Spaceship & a few Aliens bout to show up at Coachella 💃🏾🕺🏼😅👽🚀🚀🚀🛸🛸🔥🔥,” wrote Missy on Instagram.

It is nearly impossible to top this set. However, limits don’t apply to Missy Elliott as seen throughout her Out Of This World tour. So, festivalgoers are confident there’s more to come during Coachella 2025 weekend two.

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Joined The Go-Go’s At Coachella 2025 For A Surprise Duet Of ‘Head Over Heels’

The desert heat is playing a trick on you. The Go-Go’s reunion at Coachella 2025 was not a musical mirage.

For over seven years, the “Tonite” band’s original members singer Belinda Carlisle, lead guitarist Charlotte Caffey, rhythm guitarist Jane Wiedlin, bassist Kathy Valentine, and drummer Gina Schock haven’t touched a stage. Yesterday (April 11), that all changed during their Coachella 2025 Weekend 1 set.

If The Go-Go’s being back together wasn’t enough, they treated festivalgoers to a special live collaboration. As a pleasant surprise Green Day’s frontman Billie Joe Armstrong joined The Go-Go’s for a duet of their 1984 single “Head Over Heels.”

In the clip (viewable here), the rockers basked in the moment as fans cheered them on. Many festivalgoers counted themselves lucky as Green Day wasn’t scheduled to perform later in the evening.

The Go-Go’s found a way to incorporate another into their set. While Chappell Roan did not make an appearance at Coachella 2025, the Grammy Award-winners music did. Later in the Go-Go’s performance, they crafted a crossover blend of their 1981 banger “We Got The Beat” with Roan’s viral sensation “Hot to Go!”

Now that their weekend one Coachella 2025 set in the festival record books, fans are curious about The Go-Go’s plans for weekend two.

Lady Gaga’s Coachella 2025 Weekend One Headlining Performance Featured Fashionable Nods To Her Iconic Music Videos

Lady Gaga’s Chromatica Ball Film 2024 (1024x437)
Getty Image

Believe it or not, MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) organizers have not yet bestowed Lady Gaga with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. But, that hasn’t stopped the “Abracadabra” singer’s devoted Little Monsters (super fans) from launching a campaign on her behalf.

Yesterday (April 11), Lady Gaga’s seemingly leaned into the online discourse at Coachella 2025. During Gaga’s weekend one headlining set she includes several fashionable Easter Eggs throughout her set.

Over the span of two hours, Lady Gaga jumped across her expansive discography. Her opening medley, which consisted of “Bloody Mary,” “Born This Way,” “Abracadabra,” “Judas,” and “Poker Face,” stayed true to Gaga’s current Mayhem visual ethos.

But as a nod to her day one supporters, during her performance of “Paparazzi,” Gaga incorporated metal crutches a callback to the 2009 music video. Then for her live rendition of “Bad Romance,” Gaga pulled a twofer.

In an elaborate setup, Gaga managed to recreate a scene from her “Bad Romance” music. Laying in a bed of sand beside her skeleton mask-wearing dancers, Gaga’s iconic music video was back and more imaginative than ever.

But Gaga did not stop there. For her final “Bad Romance” reference, one of her dancers modeled a white lace crown as seen in the initial visual. Lady Gaga compared headlining music festival to a religious experience. Still, Coachella 2025 attendees could not have guessed what haute couture frocks Gaga would wear to deliver the musical sermon.

Is ‘The King Of Kings’ On Streaming? Where To Watch

The King of Kings is off to a royal start.

The animated Christian film (that stars Charles Dickens for some reason?) from Angel Studios is projected for an $18 million debut weekend at the domestic box office. If that holds, it would “wound up outstripping DreamWorks Animation’s The Prince of Egypt ($14.5M) as the best opening ever for an animated Biblical movie.” The Prince of Egypt still holds the record for best diva-off in a motion picture, however.

The King of Kings has one heck of a voice cast, including Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, Forest Whitaker, Ben Kingsley, and Oscar Isaac. But if you’re waiting to hear what Llewyn Davis sounds like as Jesus Christ at home, it might be awhile.

Is The King Of Kings On Streaming? Where To Watch

Angel Studios also released surprise box office smash Sound of Freedom. Remember that whole… thing? That one came out in July 2023, and wasn’t released on digital platforms until November. A Prime Video streaming debut followed in December. The King of Kings could have a similar life-cycle. If so, expect it on streaming around September 2025.

Here’s the logline:

A father tells his son the greatest story ever told, and what begins as a bedtime tale becomes a life-changing journey. Through vivid imagination, the boy walks alongside Jesus, witnessing His miracles, facing His trials, and understanding His ultimate sacrifice. The King of Kings invites us to rediscover the enduring power of hope, love, and redemption through the eyes of a child.

The King of Kings is out in theaters now. You can watch a trailer above.

‘Chief Of War’: Everything To Know So Far About Jason Momoa’s Epic Historical Series On Apple TV+

Jason Momoa
Getty Image

Just because Apple TV+ is crushing a sci-fi supply and beefing up their comedy roster doesn’t mean that they are putting drama on the back burner. Quite the opposite, and the star of one of the earliest Apple TV+ shows, See is doing some dramatic honors.

Jason Momoa will return to take another page from history, long after his four seasons of Frontier for Netflix and Discovery Channel. He won’t be wearing fur this time but will be heading back to his native Hawaii, where he has always been vocal for Indigenous Peoples’ rights and previously faux-threatened to derail Aquaman 2 (which, in retrospect, he probably should have done for any reason) while protesting construction on a sacred mountain. Now, Momoa will funnel that same passion into Chief of War, so let’s uncover what to expect.

Plot

Apple TV+

Momoa is all in. He has acknowledged this series to the Associated Press as “the pinnacle for me,” “the top,” and “my Dances With Wolves,” and he not only stars in every episode but executive produced and wrote the series. The cast is predominantly Polynesian, and this will not only be an epic production but also “unprecedented telling of the unification and colonization of Hawai’i at the turn of the 18th century.”

The entire series, naturally, was shot on location and is fashioned on historical events. As with both Game Of Thrones and See, Momoa portrays another legendary warrior, but this character is obviously near to his heart due this being a real story. Ka’iana has been noted by historians as “the handsomest of chiefs” and has been compared to Hercules, and Momoa will portray him as “he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century.”

While speaking with Men’s Health, Momoa continued his raving by calling this “my baby, and my dream,” and emotion continued to pour out on why this was much more than a mere gig:

“It’s the hardest, most challenging, most demanding thing I’ve ever done. It’s the last big dream I have left. Everything else is just kind of ‘actor for hire,’ but this is my homage to my people. We have so many beautiful stories in Hawaii that no one knows about. All I care about is just doing right by my people. [The show is] for Indigenous kids growing up, understanding that we were warriors and what we come from and understanding there was a language that was stripped from us. Like most Indigenous tribes, everything’s taken from us. It’s like rebuilding and building these bridges back.”

Cast

Momoa headlines an ensemble packed that includes The Night Agent‘s Luciane Buchanan along with Cliff Curtis, Temuera Morrison, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Brandon Finn, Siua Ikale’o, and Te Kohe Tuhaka.

Release Date

Chief of War will debut on August 1, 2025 with two episodes and weekly Friday arrivals to complete nine episodes.

Trailer

With no trailer yet (that should surface soon), here’s Momoa gushing about his devotion to the AP.
