Nine Inch Nails Share The Vigorous ‘As Alive As You Need Me To Be’ From Their ‘Tron: Ares’ Score

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are Nine Inch Nails. They also make a ton of film scores together, but for those projects, they’re credited by their real names, not as the band. They’re taking a different approach for their Tron: Ares score, though, opting to do it as Nine Inch Nails.

It’s not fully clear what that means for the project, but at the moment, we do have a hint: NIN shared the first listen of the soundtrack today (July 17), a song called “As Alive As You Need Me To Be.” It’s something that could fit on a regular NIN studio album, an electronic banger with Reznor vocals.

As for why they’re going about it this way, Reznor told Empire, “A couple of years ago, [Tom MacDougall, President of Walt Disney Music] came by the studio and said, ‘Do you think you guys would be interested in scoring Tron?’ He didn’t even finish the sentence, I was like, ‘F*ck yes, we’d want to do that.’ He said, ‘How would you feel about if it was credited as Nine Inch Nails, versus Trent and Atticus?’ We weren’t expecting to hear that question.”

He added, “I’ll give a few spoilers: there’s not one second of orchestra in our score. It sounds precise and unpleasant at times. It’s not an atonal, punishing score, but we spent a lot of time thinking about the undertones of what’s happening in the story. The concept of artificial life infused with feelings and emotions and a sense of questioning their purpose and their replaceability, their lack of soul, in some ways. We kind of riffed on that.”

Freddie Gibbs And The Alchemist Announce The ‘Alfredo II’ Release Date

Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist nearly won a Grammy with their 2020 team-up album, Alfredo, and now, it looks like they’re headed back to the well for a second helping. Today, they announced the release date for Alfredo II, the long-rumored sequel, July 25, in addition to sharing a short film of the same name and the project’s first single, “1995.”

Alfredo: The Movie references Japanese gangster movies and martial arts films, as the duo finds themselves in hot water with the yakuza, and Freddie absconds to the mountains for an intense training montage. A voiceover from Gibbs shares the lessons he’s learned as the two visit sporting events, restaurants, and strip clubs, all set to Debussy’s “Claire De Lune.”

Meanwhile, “1995” demonstrates the soulful sound of the upcoming album, laden with layered samples, laid-back string arrangements, and Freddie’s gruff, intricate bars.

Freddie and Al also partnered with Amazon to release a limited run of signed Alfredo II vinyl (100 records), as well as Los Angeles’ HVW8 Gallery and streetwear label Babylon for a Saturday, July 19th release event including a photo exhibition, advance album listening, short film screening, and a limited apparel capsule.

You can listen to “1995” below, and watch Alfredo: The Movie above.

Alfredo II is out on 7/25 via Rabbit Vision/ALC Records/Virgin Music. You can find more info here.

Pusha T Downplays Criticisms Of Clipse’s Coke-Fueled Content

Amid Clipse’s resurgence behind the fan and critically acclaimed comeback album, Let God Sort Em Out, a new complaint about the coke-rap connoisseurs’ output has emerged on online. While there are plenty who joke that Pusha T and Malice’s street tales get them through their white-collar nine-to-fives, some have begun to question whether they have anything else in the tank.

However, taking the same fatalistic outlook as their album’s title, Pusha brushed off those criticisms during the duo’s recent appearance on the Joe and Jada podcast with fellow mixtape era faves Fat Joe and Jadakiss.

“Rap has always come from a real place,” he said. “At this point, I liken it to somebody that likes mob movies. I don’t watch horror, I watch A&E; it’s scarier, I believe it. You can’t please everybody. 23 years in this? I’m not tryna please nobody but myself, that’s what I care about. I know that my taste, my ear, and what it is that I wanna hear that resonates with that type of person, that’s the type of person I wanna talk to. The person who says that… man, I’m sure I don’t even gel with you anyway. I’m positive I don’t like you. I take it with a grain of salt, but more importantly, I know who my family is.”

The Thornton brothers don’t play about family; throughout their new album, Pusha particularly airs grievances with rappers like Travis Scott, whose actions he sees as disrespectful to longtime collaborator Pharrell.

You can watch the full interview above.

Here Is Alabama Shakes’ 2025 Reunion Tour Setlist

In 2024, Brittany Howard expressed an interest in an Alabama Shakes comeback. Well, it’s happening: They’ve been teasing new music, and this week, they kicked off a reunion tour.

At the opening July 15 show in Chicago, the band’s setlist (via setlist.fm) pulled largely from their 2015 album Sound & Color. Most notably, the band debuted two new songs, “American Dream” and “Another Life.”

When announcing the tour earlier this year, Howard said in a statement:

“Last year, [guitarist Heath Fogg], [bassist Zac Cockrell], and I started chatting about how much fun it would be to make music together and tour again as Alabama Shakes. This band and these songs have been such a source of joy for all of us. It is crazy that it has been 10 years since we released Sound And Color and eight years since we played a show. But, we didn’t want this to entirely be a look back. We wanted it to be as much about the future as the past. So we have a bunch of new music that will be released soon. We just can’t wait to experience that ‘feeling’ when we start playing those first few notes of ‘Don’t Wanna Fight’ or ‘Gimme All Your Love.’”

Check out the setlist below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.

Whitney Announce The New Album ‘Small Talk’ With The Summery Single ‘Dandelions’

Whitney shared “Darling” in May, suggesting that the duo had a new album on the way. Indeed, they do: Today (July 16), they announced Small Talk, their fourth album.

They also shared a warm new single, “Dandelions.” The band’s Julien Ehrlich says of the song:

“A couple years ago Max and I were both on the brink of moving across the country to be closer to the people we were dating at the time. Over the span of a few months both relationships somewhat abruptly crumbled, leaving us with equal parts confusion and sadness, mourning the futures that would have accompanied those relationships as well as the relationships themselves. Inspired by those events (and on a whim of Midwestern pride) we wound up spinning the story of ‘Dandelions’ into one of a big city hopeful who gets chewed up and spit back out into the heartland.”

The duo previously told Uproxx, “It’s always at the forefront of our minds to think about, ‘Someone who knows our band or likes our band, what would they like to hear? How would they want to hear us change and evolve?’”

Watch the “Dandelions” video above. Below, find the Small Talk cover art and tracklist. Whitney also just announced a tour, so find those dates below as well.

Sudan Archives Reveals The Release Date For Her New Album, ‘The BPM’

We haven’t heard from Sudan Archives for a couple of years. Her last album, Natural Brown Prom Queen, was released in 2022, and after a 2023 spent making appearances at Coachella, and on late-night shows The Late Show and The Tonight Show, she pretty much spent 2024 off the radar entirely.

Today, though, she announced her comeback. Releasing the video for her new single, “My Type,” she also revealed the release date for her third studio album. The BPM is due on October 17 via Stones Throw Records, and according to its press release, “explores themes of mental illness, self-love, technology, romance and heartbreak even.” Inspired by her parents — her mom’s from Michigan, her dad’s from Illinois — the album incorporates the club sounds that began in both places (if I have to explain that techno was born in Detroit and house was born in Chicago one more time, I may have a nervous breakdown).

The album was recorded in both cities, and also introduces an alter ego named “Gadget Girl,” who Sudan explains is inspired by her own use of technology to express the musical ideas she developed outside classical channels like school band. Meanwhile, “My Type” is, in her words, her first “rap-rap song,” revolving around both hyping up her friends and questioning her potential attraction to them.

You can watch the “My Type” video above.

The BPM is due on 10/17 via Stones Throw. You can find more info here.
