Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker Reflects On A Decade Of ‘Currents’: ‘I Couldn’t Tell If It Was Great Or Embarrassingly Bad’

Does Kevin Parker have a new Tame Impala album on the way? Maybe! In the meantime, his 2015 classic Currents just turned ten years old and Parker marked the occasion with a retrospective Instagram post.

In the post, Parker says it doesn’t feel like the album is a decade old, and that while he was making it, he “couldn’t tell if it was great or embarrassingly bad.” The post reads in full:

“Currents is 10 years old today. Really?? It doesn’t feel like that at all. I guess because it’s stayed such a big part of my life since then it still feels fresh. When we play Let It Happen live these days I still feel it deep in my soul. I guess also because it’s taken me this long to really appreciate the music. I had more than one existential crisis during the making and release of this album. I couldn’t tell if it was great or embarrassingly bad, not to mention the fans I would lose by switching up music styles so heavily. People recently have asked me if i was feeling pretty chuffed with myself after making this album and the answer is always absolutely not! There was often so much doubt, but I knew it was an album I had to make. The lows were low but the highs were high. And during the highs, when I had forgotten to care what people were going to think I’d be driving in my car listening to mixes feeling like it was pure magic, and in those moments I remember thinking whatever the outcome I just had to go through with it, and believe in it even if it felt totally blind. Glad I did. Happy 10th Bday Currents. Emotional thanks to all my peeps who believed in it with me, you know who you are [purple heart emoji]”

Reneé Rapp Wonders ‘Why Is She Still Here?’ On Her New ‘Bite Me’ Single

A new Reneé Rapp era is loading as she approaches the release of her next album, Bite Me. We’re still a couple weeks away from that drop, but in the meantime, Rapp has offered another tease with “Why Is She Still Here?.”

Rapp grapples with relationship complications, singing, “You can tell me you don’t love her / But you should probably tell her, too / ‘Cause I can’t keep sleeping undercover / It’s like she’s always in the room / She’s on that towel wrapped up around my head / And that note that’s stuck to the mirror I shouldn’t have read.”

Rapp recently said of her upcoming album:

“23 to 24 has been such a massive difference for me. It’s about this […] and to this point, a reflection on my 23rd year specifically. […] It was so bad, and I thought 22 was insane for me. […]

It was really about finding an outlet. I remember just feeling so overwhelmed and thinking I needed to do something with all this negative energy. So, I sat down in a corner, closed my eyes for about 10 minutes, and just let the thoughts flow. It was like a form of mental escape, a way to process everything without having to vocalize it directly. […]

I think the rawness of those emotions adds a layer of authenticity to my music. It’s like, in that moment of vulnerability, I can tap into something deeper and more genuine. The song I ended up writing that day captured exactly what I was feeling — the frustration, the sadness, everything. It turned out to be one of my most honest pieces.”

Indiecast On New Music From Alex G And Deftones, And The 10th Anniversary Of Tame Impala’s ‘Currents’

Alex G 2025 Chris Maggio top

Steven and Ian open with a conversation about Steven’s upcoming trip to London and whether he’ll actually get to see Oasis. Then they talk about the Fantasy Album Draft and how Clipse did slightly worse than Steven hoped, perhaps because there’s “dad rap” fatigue with critics. They also talk about the new album by Alex G, and how he was able to make his most accessible music without losing his essential Alex G-ness.

Then they transition to the new Deftones single, and how the long-running metal act keeps growing in public estimation. Finally, they conclude with a discussion of Tame Impala’s Currents, which turns 10 this week.

In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks up the up emo band Sport and Steven reps for psych-rock veteran Andy Boay.

Leon Bridges Assists On Hermanos Gutiérrez’s First-Ever English-Language Single, ‘Elegantly Wasted’

After completing their tour together last year, Leon Bridges and Hermanos Gutiérrez reunite for a new single, “Elegantly Wasted.” The soulful song — the brothers’ first with entirely English-language lyrics — blends regional Mexican sounds with the bluesy R&B associated with Bridges’ output for a warm and woozy ode to the comforts of sharing libations with good company.

Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys plays bass on the track, while well-traveled country keyboardist Mike Rojas does his thing alongside veteran Sam Bacco on percussion and Jeffrey Clemens on drums. “Elegantly Wasted” is Hermanos Gutiérrez’s first new music of 2025, and promises plenty more on the horizon.

“We’ve always been fans of Leon’s style and his way of approaching music,” they said in the press release. “When we were in Nashville together last November, we had a window of maybe four hours before our show at the Ryman that night, but managed to finish a song we’d been working on for months. Leon showed up, and he heard the track for the first time at the studio together with Dan Auerbach, the whole team of Easy Eye Sound and Leon’s crew. He took a microphone, and he just started to sing a melody over it. It sounded like an angel. We all expected him to crush it with his first note, and he did. And he wasn’t even singing lyrics; he was just singing whatever felt natural. It was such an incredible moment, and then he got together with Dan, and they wrote the lyrics. This is the product of being on tour together for seven weeks. Touring is fun, but sometimes it’s like you’re on a nonstop journey. You can feel that in the music and in the sound. There’s something really happy, but also a bit nostalgic.”

‘Bugonia’: Everything To Know So Far About Emma Stone’s Latest Reunion With Director Yorgos Lanthimos

Bugonia trailer top
YouTube

From Parasite to Squid Game, South Korean productions have made a splash in the American entertainment world in recent years. It just might happen again soon, albeit somewhat indirectly: Bugonia, a remake of the 2003 South Korean movie Save The Green Planet!, hits theaters this fall.

There’s some promising precedent here, as for the film, director Yorgos Lanthimos reunites with Emma Stone, with whom he previously worked on The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds Of Kindness (the latter of which also stars Jesse Plemons, who’s a lead in Bugonia, too). The screenplay, meanwhile, comes from The Regime and The Menu writer Will Tracy.

Ahead of the film’s release, keep reading for everything you need to know before it hits theaters.

Plot

An official synopsis reads:

“Two conspiracy-obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.”

Jerry Ko — head of co-producer and co-distributor CJ ENM’s film division, told The Hollywood Reporter of the motivation behind revisiting the Save The Green Planet! story:

“We started the project with the intention of reviving director [Jang Joon-hwan’s] sense of imagination, which was ahead of its time and was not fully appreciated 20 years ago. The film developed into a bigger movie than we initially thought. By getting people on our side who understood the film’s potential, we were able to create buzz.”

Cast

The film is lead by Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone.

Stone previously told The Hollywood Reporter of working with Lanthimos, “I feel like I can do anything with him, because we’ve worked together so many times. I trust him beyond the trust I’ve had with any director, and I’ve been lucky to work with great directors.”

Plemons also previously said to ScreenRant:

“In the beginning, like most people, he’s a little enigmatic and hard to crack. He’s got a very sharp sense of humor, and then at the same time, he can be incredibly warm. And the environment he creates is one that’s just conducive to, I think, a sense of freedom and exploration. […] He’s never locked into any one way of looking at something, thinking about something, and then he’ll give you a specific note that’s very easy to understand. That’ll just make something shift in your head and open it up in a new way.”

Release Date

The film is set to hit select theaters on October 24, before a wide release on October 31.

Nine Inch Nails Share The Vigorous ‘As Alive As You Need Me To Be’ From Their ‘Tron: Ares’ Score

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are Nine Inch Nails. They also make a ton of film scores together, but for those projects, they’re credited by their real names, not as the band. They’re taking a different approach for their Tron: Ares score, though, opting to do it as Nine Inch Nails.

It’s not fully clear what that means for the project, but at the moment, we do have a hint: NIN shared the first listen of the soundtrack today (July 17), a song called “As Alive As You Need Me To Be.” It’s something that could fit on a regular NIN studio album, an electronic banger with Reznor vocals.

As for why they’re going about it this way, Reznor told Empire, “A couple of years ago, [Tom MacDougall, President of Walt Disney Music] came by the studio and said, ‘Do you think you guys would be interested in scoring Tron?’ He didn’t even finish the sentence, I was like, ‘F*ck yes, we’d want to do that.’ He said, ‘How would you feel about if it was credited as Nine Inch Nails, versus Trent and Atticus?’ We weren’t expecting to hear that question.”

He added, “I’ll give a few spoilers: there’s not one second of orchestra in our score. It sounds precise and unpleasant at times. It’s not an atonal, punishing score, but we spent a lot of time thinking about the undertones of what’s happening in the story. The concept of artificial life infused with feelings and emotions and a sense of questioning their purpose and their replaceability, their lack of soul, in some ways. We kind of riffed on that.”

Freddie Gibbs And The Alchemist Announce The ‘Alfredo II’ Release Date

Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist nearly won a Grammy with their 2020 team-up album, Alfredo, and now, it looks like they’re headed back to the well for a second helping. Today, they announced the release date for Alfredo II, the long-rumored sequel, July 25, in addition to sharing a short film of the same name and the project’s first single, “1995.”

Alfredo: The Movie references Japanese gangster movies and martial arts films, as the duo finds themselves in hot water with the yakuza, and Freddie absconds to the mountains for an intense training montage. A voiceover from Gibbs shares the lessons he’s learned as the two visit sporting events, restaurants, and strip clubs, all set to Debussy’s “Claire De Lune.”

Meanwhile, “1995” demonstrates the soulful sound of the upcoming album, laden with layered samples, laid-back string arrangements, and Freddie’s gruff, intricate bars.

Freddie and Al also partnered with Amazon to release a limited run of signed Alfredo II vinyl (100 records), as well as Los Angeles’ HVW8 Gallery and streetwear label Babylon for a Saturday, July 19th release event including a photo exhibition, advance album listening, short film screening, and a limited apparel capsule.

You can listen to “1995” below, and watch Alfredo: The Movie above.

Alfredo II is out on 7/25 via Rabbit Vision/ALC Records/Virgin Music. You can find more info here.
