Joyce Manor Return After Three Years Away With The Jangly New Single ‘All My Friends Are So Depressed’

Punk-rock favorites Joyce Manor are back: The group hadn’t released new music in three years, but they changed that today (August 18) with “All My Friends Are So Depressed.” The band cites The Smiths as one of the inspirations behind the song, and it’s easy to hear that.

The band’s Barry Johnson says in a statement:

“The first line I came up with for this song was ‘lord above in a Tecate truck’ after passing a Tecate delivery truck with Jesus sh*t all over it on the freeway driving back to Long Beach after a show in Fresno. While searching for a line that rhymed with ‘lord above in a Tecate truck’ I came up with ‘why even exist? Who gives a f*ck!?’ and the concept of ‘All My Friends Are So Depressed’ was born. It’s kind of my take on what I imagine Lana Del Rey lyrics are like. Instead of icy, detached cool 50’s Americana, it’s all dirty shag carpet, bong rips, Peter Frampton Comes Alive, key lime pie and suicidal ideations. My flow was inspired by 100 Gecs who I was listening to a concerning amount in 2023 (Much respect to Dylan and Laura, please take us on tour). Musically, we were drawing from The Libertines, Tiger Army, X, and The Smiths… obviously.”

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

bnm
Getty Image/Derrick Rossignol

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw Cardi B with a rare new song and Chance The Rapper also make a big comeback. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape newsletter.

Cardi B — “Imaginary Playerz”

New Cardi B tunes have been relatively rare as fans wait for her long-overdue second album. She delivered last week, though, with “Imaginary Playerz,” which borrows from Jay-Z’s “Imaginary Player” but adds a modernized twist.

Steve Lacy — “Nice Shoes”

Lacy had a chart-topping hit with “Bad Habit” three years ago, then he pretty much went silent. He’s back now, though, with news of a new album and the single “Nice Shoes,” which boldly starts, “If I had a dollar for the friends I would f*ck / I could buy a pair of really nice shoes.”

Chance The Rapper — “No More Old Men”

For a while, it was unclear when Chance’s project Star Line would arrive, but last week, it finally did. Some have hailed it as a return to form and he did it with help along the way, like from Jamila Woods on “No More Old Men.”

ASAP Rocky — “Trunks”

Rocky has his acting hat on at the moment with his new movie Highest 2 Lowest. He’s not leaving the music behind here, though, as he just dropped two new songs from the soundtrack.

Dijon — “Baby!”

After contributing to Bon Iver’s new album SABLE, fABLE and Justin Bieber’s Swag earlier this year, Dijon is putting himself in the spotlight with a new album, Baby. The title track is a good reference for the diversity and adventurousness of the project as a whole.

Kaytranada — “Do It! (Again!)” Feat. TLC

Kaytranada pulled so strongly from a TLC song on Ain’t No Damn Way!, his new album, that he went ahead and gave the group a feature credit for the sample. So, it’s not a full-blown collaboration, sadly, but it’s still a hell of a time.

Conan Gray — “Caramel”

After two years of “secretly writing songs” “after shows in the basements of the venues, in the sheets of my hotel beds, in narrow gaps between tours,” Conan Gray’s new album Wishbone has arrived. It’s led by soaring and dramatic tunes like the latest single, “Caramel.”

Kenny Beats and Archie Madekwe — “Love And Obsession”

The movie Lurker is a look at the music industry in Los Angeles, so having Kenny Beats doing the score is a tremendous asset. So too, it turns out, is star Archie Madekwe, who plays an artist in the movie and sounds great on soundtrack cuts like “Love And Obsession.”

Ashnikko — “Trinkets”

Smoochies, the latest album from Ashnikko, is on the way. The artist describes the project as “sexy, playful, and feminine, while toeing the line of grotesque and absurd,” and the “older sister” of her Demidevil project.

King Princess — “Girls”

Girl Violence is coming: We’re less than a month away from King Princess’ new album. She continued to tease the project last week with a new single, the retro-flavored slow-burner “Girls.”

Hayley Williams Is Feeling Bummed In Her New ‘Glum’ Video

Paramore leader Hayley Williams just released a new solo album… but only sort of. No, she doesn’t have an actual new album out, but at the start of this month, she did release 17 singles all at once.

Since the grand unveiling, Williams has gone back and given some tracks more individual attention, like the singles they are. She started with an “Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party” video a couple weeks back, and now she has another visual out, this time for “Glum.”

The song is largely about being bummed and the video reflects that. Williams sings, “Do you ever feel so alone / That you could implode and no one would know? / And when you look around and nobody’s home / Don’t you wanna go back to wherever we’re from? / To wherever we’re from.”

Meanwhile, in a recent Dork interview, Williams discussed how she’s feeling about her and Paramore’s career right now, saying, “There are days that I feel old and washed up, there are days that I’m on top of the world and there are moments that make all the attention scary, because what if we can’t live up to it? […] We’ve spent years not fitting in, and that’s always triggered my loser complex from being a weird homeschooled kid, but the important thing is learning how to not get defensive with that underdog mentality.”

A New Blackpink Project Is Set To Arrive Before The End Of 2025, Per The Group’s Label Boss

Blackpink 2025 top
Blackpink

Blackpink is back. The group just wrapped up a run of North American concerts, and they shared a new song, “Jump,” last month. It seems like this might all be ramping up to a new album, and now, YG Entertainment’s founder Yang Hyun Suk has addressed the speculation.

In an announcement video, he said (as NME notes) that Blackpink is currently working on a new project, which doesn’t have a release date but is expected to be out by November at the latest.

He said, “A lot of fans are curious about Blackpink’s album. I know that the Blackpink members and producers in charge of them are working very hard preparing the album. I’m hoping for Blackpink’s album to be out by November, at the latest. That’s what I’m pushing for – we’ll do our best to get Blackpink’s album out soon.”

Uproxx’s Philip Cosores saw the group live recently and wrote in his review, “The hope is that this is not nearing the end for the group, as some have rumored. They’ve already found a good rhythm for being able to pursue their solo endeavors in both film and music while still returning to their stadium-sized home base. And if these recent concerts are an indication, being the biggest K-pop band in the world is nothing to treat lightly.”

SNX: This Week’s Best Sneakers, Featuring The Jordan 12 French Blue & More

SNX_aug_15(1024x450)
Uproxx

Welcome to SNX DLX, your weekly roundup of the best sneakers to hit the internet. August keeps heating up — this week features a strong list of five dope sneakers you need on your radar. From Tyler the Creator’s resurrected 1908 Jogger, to a Whitaker Group assisted New Balance, to a new link-up between Nike and Nigel Sylvester, this week went hard on collaboration, but that doesn’t mean the big brands didn’t bring their own solo heat.

Case in point, our favorite release of the week — The Jordan 12 French Blue. If you’re a hardcore Jordan fan, you understand the significance of this colorway. It’s safe to say a lot of people are going to be catching L’s this week over that release. Hopefully you’re not one of them! Let’s dive into this week’s best sneakers and where to find them.

Converse 1908 Jogger

Nike

Price: $100

We’re willing to call it — Tyler the Creator is the best thing that has happened to Converse since Jack Purcell. Now granted, with later classics like The Weapon, that claim might seem hyperbolic, but come on — Tyler is single-handedly keeping Converse cool. Case in point, his decision to reintroduce the Converse Jogger from the brand’s vault.

But this isn’t just retreaded ground, Tyler took the this 1970’s runner and added his lifestyle touch to turn it into a brand-new shoe. The sneaker features a mixed suede and woven upper, a woven tongue label, and elegant Le Fleur branding.

The Converse 1908 Jogger is out now for a retail price of $100. Pick up a pair at Converse.

New Balance Made in USA 998 Clay Ash with Black

New Balance

Price: $219.99

New Balance stays consistent with their latest release out of the Made in USA line. Made in collaboration with luxury creative house The Whitaker Group, this Clay Ash with Black 998 sports a mesh upper with hairy suede overlays, synthetic details, and a woven co-branded logo. The Made in USA line is already known for its premium offerings, but by teaming up with the Whitaker Group, NB is significantly elevating the luxury.

Easily, this is one of our favorite New Balance releases of the year.

The New Balance Made in USA 998 Clay Ash with Black is out now for a retail price of $219.99. Pick up a pair at New Balance.

Adidas Samba OG Preloved Red

Adidas

Price: $110

The Samba is one of Adidas’ finest silhouettes, and because it has such a classic and iconic design (and a renewed popularity) that means Adidas can get a little bit weird with it. Case in point, this cheetah print Women’s Preloved Red Samba. The sneaker features a pony hair upper outfitted with leather details and red-orange accents.

It’s a bit bold, a bit wild, yet classic!

The Adidas Samba OG Preloved Red is out now for a retail price of $110. Pick up a pair via the Adidas Confirmed app or aftermarket sites like GOAT and Flight Club.

Adidas Superstar Vintage Core White

Adidas

Price: $250

The Superstar Vintage is simply an Adidas Superstar, made in Germany with elevated materials. The build is essentially the same as your stock Superstar — you’re getting a leather upper with leather lining, and a rubber outsole, in a Core white colorway with two blue and a red stripe, but the attention to detail here elevates this sneaker to new heights. We love to see this kind of love and appreciation paid to one of Adidas best silhouettes.

The Adidas Superstar Vintage Core White is set to drop on Saturday, August 16th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $250. Pick up a pair via the Adidas Confirmed app.

Air Jordan 12 French Blue and White

Nike

Price: $205

One of the all-time-greatest Air Jordan 12 colorways is hitting the internet this weekend — the classic French Blue and White. This sneaker features a full-grain leather upper with a rich blue mudguard with a snake-like texture. Rounding out the design is some chrome hardware and dulled silver accents. It’s simply one of the best Jordan 12s to ever exist, so good luck, because a lot of Jordan heads are going to be after a pair (us included).

The Air Jordan 12 French Blue and White is set to drop on August 16th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $205. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like GOAT and Flight Club.

Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 1 Low OG Better With Time

Nike

Price: $165

BMX pro Nigel Sylvester has linked up with Nike once again, this time for a new take on the Jordan 1. We were big fans of Sylvester’s past Nike collabs (naming his Jordan 4 one of our favorite sneakers of 2024) so consider us sufficiently hyped on this release. The sneaker features a distressed outsole, a Swoosh at the forefoot and medial panel, and a low-profile design in stealthy black. White, yellowed, red and cold accents add a nice layer of contrast to the design.

It’s elegant and well considered — which seems to be Sylvester’s MO when it comes to Nike collabs.

The Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 1 Better With Time is set to drop on August 16th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $165. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like GOAT and Flight Club.

Rich Brian Releases His New Album ‘Where Is My Head?’ With Its New Single, ‘She’

Rich Brian returns with his first album in six years, Where Is My Head? After prefacing the album with the single “Little Ray Of Light,” the Indonesian rapper followed up today with a new single, “She.” The video for the song is simple and straightforward, with Brian rapping in front of a monitor hooked up to a webcam, generating a surreal double vision situation, which plays into the album’s concept.

The album itself is likely the artist’s most wide-ranging effort to date, expanding on Brian’s collaborative palette with features from a diverse array of talents. Features include Charlotte Day Wilson, DAISY WORLD, Maxo Kream, redveil, Ski Mask The Slump God, and Toro y Moi. Conceptually, the album employs the “alter ego” conceit common to introspective rap projects, with Maestro, “a conductor scoring music for the dreams of Movie Brian, who lives unknowingly inside the world the Maestro creates.” The story plays out in both the music and visuals for the album, which are directed by Brian’s frequent collaborator, Jared Hogan.

You can watch the video for “She” above and check out the full tracklist below.

‘The Bear’ Star Molly Gordon And Blake Mills Sing A Witchy ‘Islands In The Stream’ Cover

Molly Gordon’s next act after becoming a favorite on The Bear is the movie Oh, Hi!, in which she stars and also co-produced alongside Sophie Brooks. For the movie, she also teamed with Blake Mills — an industry veteran who, aside from his solo career, has worked with everybody from Fiona Apple to Lucy Dacus to Alabama Shakes — for a cover. The song is “Islands In The Stream,” written by the Bee Gees but most famously performed by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.

Gordon says of the recording:

“When Sophie and I were developing Oh, Hi! and she came up with the dream sequence, she mentioned that she planned to ask her friend Blake Mills to help us out. I tried to play it very cool, but I was secretly freaking out inside as he is my favorite artist. Working with Blake exceeded any expectation. We only had a couple of hours to record the cover, but we had an immediate language — and again, I tried to hide how much of a dream those few hours were.

I feel so lucky that we get to honor one of my favorite songs with this witchy, folk version. I hope other people might sing this to themselves when they are trying to cast a spell to make someone love them (but also hope that they might discover that they shouldn’t have to do that ha!).”

Mills adds, “I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process of working on this with Molly Gordon and Sophie Brooks. We got to take this song to the moon — fitting for its usage in the film — and I think we ended up with something that truly stands on its own merits.”

Listen to “Islands In The Stream” above.
