Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Gives A Promising Update On The ‘American Idiot’ Movie

Since Car Seat Headrest just put out a rock opera, it only feels appropriate to talk about the most commercially successful rock opera of the century. American Idiot was the first Green Day album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and their second to sell over 20 million copies, after CD classic Dookie. The 2004 album was so popular that it was turned into a Broadway musical, and there’s even been talk of a theatrical film.

During the punk band’s Hollywood Walk Of Fame ceremony on Thursday (May 1), singer Billie Joe Armstrong gave an update on the American Idiot movie.

“There was supposed to be [a film], but it never panned out,” he told Variety. “I’m sure something is gonna happen. The musical did so well and they’ve done it in Australia, Italy, Germany, England… It’s traveled so well. Eventually it’s going to happen, I would think.”

Armstrong also discussed Green Day’s habit of only releasing every four years or so. “You have to live life to write songs about your life,” he said. “I do like to take my time with the lyrics to make sure that they project the way I feel, internalize what’s going on in my own life, and what’s going on in the culture… We live in such a crazy world. Now, everything is wide open.”

Lisa Links With Maroon 5 To Feature On Their Jaunty New Single ‘Priceless’

After taking a detour from music to star in the latest season of White Lotus, Blackpink’s Lisa is back with new material. This time, she features on the latest from Maroon 5, “Priceless.”

The song comes from an upcoming Maroon 5 album that has yet to be officially announced. (the band will be announcing a tour soon, too.) Adam Levine says in a statement:

“It’s just a guitar-based song which we haven’t really done in so long. It happened first for us while we were recording the album. I think it’s just the purest and we are so happy to have Lisa on it. The guitar intro is literally me playing into an audio message on my iPhone with an unplugged guitar. I actually got a little emotional recording ’cause it was sort of reconnecting to our roots, which a lot of our fans have been saying ‘hey we want to hear that sound again.’ It’s been like over 20 years so I think it’s time for that to return.”

The band’s James Valentine adds, “I got super emotional when Adam sent me the original demo of ‘Priceless’ because for me the sound represents Maroon 5’s earlier days. I joined the band in 2001 so when I was seeing them play in 2000, ‘Priceless’ gave me the same sort of excitement from the chords to overall vibe. I was super stoked on it and it established the writing and sound for our upcoming album.”

Doechii Returns To Her Boom-Bap Bag With Westside Gunn On The Gritty ‘Egypt’

It’s funny that Doechii first started making waves last year with a song called “Boom Bap,” a satirical song poking fun at the reputation of her label, TDE. The irony doubled when her debut mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal turned out to be an unabashed celebration of what some online have dubbed “scaring the hoes music.” Doechii doesn’t seem the least bit scared to lean into a throwback, 1990s-inpsired aesthetic.

For the past decade, Westside Gunn and his Griselda imprint have more or less been the standard-bearers for that sort of gritty traditionalist form of rap. So, it only makes sense for him to recruit Doechii to appear on his latest single, the moody, soulful “Egypt,” which has quietly circulated online for the past week courtesy of teasers posted by Doechii in a knowing nod to the supposed clash between her musical taste and those of her peers.

The track opens with a snippet of an interview in which Doechii declares her love for Gunn and the raps of the late, great MF DOOM, then launches into exactly the sort of beat all three rappers love. Doechii even gets to start off her verse with Gunn’s beloved ad-libs. It’s a great song. Check it out above.

Benny Blanco Throws Selena Gomez A Prom In Their Sweet ‘Talk’ Video

Thanks to her unique childhood (which was addressed somewhat in the “Younger And Hotter Than Me” video), it turns out that Selena Gomez never got a chance to go to her prom. And so, Benny Blanco, the big sweetheart that he is, decided to throw his fiancée a prom, complete with a rented limo and mall photoshoot.

The couple captured the experience on film, commemorating the moment in the video for the song “Talk” from their album, I Said I Love You First. The doc-style video follows them as they get their pictures taken and ride in their limo, all while Benny assures Selena that yes, this is really what kids do in high schools all across America to celebrate the end of their four-year ride. Then, the dance begins, with a party at a local high school gymnasium.

With that out of the way, the next big party that the duo has to plan is their wedding, which sounds like it should be decidedly easier to put together, with only one major request from the bride-to-be. “Marty [Martin Short, her Only Murders In The Building co-star] is due to give a speech,” she told Drew Barrymore on her daytime talk show. “I told him he must […] I feel like Marty would have an epic speech.”

I Said I Love You First is out now via SMG Music/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope Records. Find more information here.

Logic Has A ‘Bad F*ckin’ Day’ In The Trailer For His Directorial Debut, ‘Paradise Records’

Logic has tried his hands at a number of creative outlets besides rap: he’s written a novel, been a video game streamer, and even within rap, has tried multiple genres and even an alter ego. But the one thing we hadn’t seen him do yet was direct a movie — until now.

His directorial debut, titled Paradise Records, takes inspiration from many of the films that he’s talked about loving throughout his career, from Clerks and High Fidelity to Friday and Dog Day Afternoon. In the trailer, he plays the protagonist, a beleaguered record store owner who tries to save his shop, which is a home away from home for a colorful array of characters, including his street-struck father, his pimp uncle, and a slew of slackers and music heads drawn from a cast of Logic’s real-life friends. Deidrich Bader, David Krumholtz, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Juicy J, Phil Lamarr, Kevin Smith, Martin Starr, Tony Revolori, and more appear in the trailer, which shows up snippet’s of Logic’s “bad f*ckin’ day” as he tries to save his shop from foreclosure, survive a what looks like a hostage crisis, and of course, navigate his slippery racial identity.

You can watch the trailer for Paradise Records above.

The film will premiere June 6th at Tribeca Film Festival. Stay tuned for wider distribution details. Good luck, Bobby!

Johnny Venus Of Earthgang & 6lack Paint A Perfect Picture In Their Artful ‘So Beautiful’ Video

In February, Earthgang‘s Johnny Venus — also known as Olu — officially launched his solo career with the soulful “So Beautiful” featuring fellow Atlanta rapper-singer 6lack. Today, Johnny and 6lack officially released the music video for the romantic single, which finds Olu painting a pretty picture while singing to his muse (AI To The World founder Tanyka Renee) and 6lack performing his verse surrounded by athleisure-clad dancers.

Although Venus hasn’t yet revealed the release date for his eventual solo debut, he’s been rolling it out in the careful fashion typical of SinceThe80s, his management since entering the game a decade ago as a member of Earthgang and Spillage Village. With the album Earth 2 Olu in the works, he did share his inspirations for it in a statement with the release of “So Beautiful.” “This is my saga,” he said. “This is the story that I’m telling about myself and my journey and growth, but there will still be those Easter eggs. Because it’s time. Now is the time, now is all we have.”

Meanwhile, 6lack has also been working on his follow-up to 2023’s Since I Have A Lover, setting the tone with “F*ck The Rap Game.”

Ahead of an appearance at Utah’s Kilby Block Party and a European tour, Suki Waterhouse has released a lush new song, “On This Love.”

The track’s music video, which depicts an age-gap relationship between Waterhouse and a much older man, is directed by Waterhouse’s sister Immy.

“She is provocative and playful and is absorbed in the joy of living and the freedom [of] unconventional decisions,” she explained to Rolling Stone about Suki’s character in the video. “Suki’s voice behind the video explores the space between perception and power.
