Writer/director Alex Garland turned heads in December when A24 dropped the trailer for his new movie Civil War. Given the divisive state of American politics where calls for an actual civil war have become increasingly common, Garland appears to have boldly imagined what such a conflict would like and what it would do the populace at large. The film seemingly centers around a president who refuses to relinquish power, and well, let’s not pretend we don’t know who that sounds like.

Here’s everything we know about the potentially incendiary Civil War:

Plot

The plot details for Civil War are being kept tightly under wraps. Even the official synopsis for the film is extremely vague:

A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.

Not a whole lot to go on, right? Fortunately, A24 released a trailer that offers some clues as to what sparked the nationwide conflict. Most notably, Nick Offerman’s President of the United States is somehow on a third term, which suggests some sort of authoritarian power play that was alarming enough for Texas and California to join forces. It’s a concept that sparked a whole lot of laughs on social media given the states are polar opposites on the political spectrum. (Texas is notoriously conservative while California is overwhelmingly liberal.)

Of course, there could be other factors at play, but Garland is keeping things close to the chest. That said, it’s not like America hasn’t already witnessed a president make a violent power grab (January 6, anyone?), so it’ll be interesting to see whether Civil War gets awkwardly topical or goes in a completely different direction. Is Offerman a proxy for Trump, or something else entirely?

Cast

Civil War stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman. While their roles haven’t been confirmed — not even their character names are available — the first trailer revealed that Dunst plays a seasoned photojournalist with warzone experience, Plemons is a soldier, and Offerman plays the President of the United States whose third term appears to be at the crux of the film’s conflict. Moura and Spaeny’s roles are unspecified, but they seem to be random citizens just trying to survive the war breaking out on American soil.

Janet Jackson‘s Together Again tour, which ran for 36 sold-out shows last year, became the highest-selling tour of her career. Today, she announced that she’s added another 35 dates for this summer, hitting arenas and amphitheaters across North America.

The tour coincides with milestones for some of her most beloved albums, including 35 years of Rhythm Nation, 30 years of Janet, and 25 of The Velvet Rope. The pop standard-setter launches her 2024 campaign on June 4 in Palm Desert, California, and runs through July 30 in Phoenix, Arizona.

2023 was the year of comeback tours. From 5o Cent and Taylor Swift to Beyoncé, music’s biggest names drew in huge crowds during their tours. Another superstar that pulled in massive audiences on the road was “Nasty” singer Janet Jackson through her Together Again Tour, the highest-grossing tour of her career.

Those who could not secure tickets for last year’s tour stop are in luck. On January 16, Jackson announced her decision to extend her run. Beginning in March, Jackson’s performance stint will resume thanks to the 2024 Together Again Tour. On several of the select 43-date schedule, “Hot In Herre” rapper Nelly will serve as a special guest.

It would seem a little sad if Tina Fey was able to pull off a Mean Girls “reboot” without having at least one of the integral players involved, which is why Linsday Lohan’s brief cameo in the movie musical was a nice callback to the original. And while, in theory, it would be nice to assume Lohan would do it out of the kindness of her heart, it turns out she made bank off of appearing in the new movie. And none for Gretchen Wieners, it seems.

According to Variety, Lohan’s half-day of work on the reboot earned her $500,000. Lohan appeared in the film as the judge of the Mathletes competition at the film’s conclusion. She wasn’t the only cameo — Megan Thee Stallion also popped up in a TikTok-style montage, while Emily In Paris’ Ashley Park (who debuted in Mean Girls on Broadway) also had a small role as the French teacher. Get it?! Très Fech!

Even though Lohan has a major payday for her role, the actress was reportedly “disappointed” by one of the movie’s jokes: At one point in the film, Megan Thee Stallion says that “Y2K fire crotch is back,” which could possibly be seen as a dig at Lohan. A source told The Messenger that Lohan was “surprised and taken aback” at the comment when she appeared at the New York premiere of the film.

While the joke was just a quick one-liner, it seemed to be a nod to a 2006 paparazzi video in which actor Brandon Davis, who was tight with Lohan’s ex-friend Paris Hilton, referred to Lohan as a “fire crotch,” among other insults.

Fey, who penned both the 2004 film and the new film, had been open about retiring past jokes that haven’t aged well in the 20 years since the original film premiered. “I was writing in the early 2000s very much based on my experience as a teen in the late ’80s. It’s come to no one’s surprise that jokes have changed,” she told The New York Times. “You don’t poke in the way that you used to poke. Even if your intention was always the same, it’s just not how you do it anymore, which is fine. I very much believe that you can find new ways to do jokes with less accidental shrapnel sideways.” Perhaps we’ll have to see how the “fire crotch” joke lands in 2044.

Drake and J. Cole have postponed their upcoming joint tour, which was originally scheduled to start later this week in Denver. The It’s All a Blur Tour — Big As the What? was billed to begin on January 18 with two shows in Denver, then proceed through the end of March, ending in Birmingham, Alabama. 10 new dates were added a few days later.

Now, though, according to Billboard, it’ll instead kick off in Tampa, Florida on February 2, with the two Denver dates moved to the end of the tour on April 15 and 16. Although Billboard has reached out to reps for both artists, as of this writing, no reason has been given for the delay.

Hip- hop has seen its fair share of high-profile criminal trials, but perhaps none will be more impactful to the genre as a whole than the ongoing racketeering trial against Atlanta rapper Young Thug and his crew, YSL. While YSL is ostensibly the name of Thug’s record label, according to Georgia prosecutors, it’s actually the title of a violent street gang, Young Slime Life, with the trapper turned rapper at its head.

Over the past few months, it seems all of hip-hop culture’s eyes have been on the court proceedings due to the impact their outcome could have — not just on Young Thug and YSL, but on hip-hop as a whole. Because the Fulton County District Attorney’s indictment cites Thug’s lyrics as the main evidence against him for violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, the case has drawn national attention, with many observers calling this decision prejudiced against a musical form invented and primarily practiced by Black artists.

Because of the case’s import, plenty lf people will naturally want to follow it in real time, and fortunately for them, the trial is being livestreamed by multiple networks, a testament to public interest in the case. Among the networks livestreaming the trial are Fox 5 Atlanta, Law & Crime Network, and Atlanta News First.

In addition, in-depth coverage and commentary has been provided throughout by legal affairs journalist Meghann Cuniff, who gained attention during the assault trial against Tory Lanez for shooting Megan Thee Stallion (she aslo gained the affectionate nickname Meghann Thee Reporter from followers online). Her YouTube channel also includes a stream and her commentary with explanations and breakdowns for those viewers who aren’t familiar with legal proceedings.

The trial is currently on hiatus and scheduled to restart on January 22.

Better Call Saul set an Emmys record on Sunday, but not the good kind of record. More of a “Buffalo Bills lost four Super Bowls in a row” kind of record. The Breaking Bad prequel (and postquel) was nominated 53 times during its incredible six-season run, and lost every one of them. No other show has more nominations with zero wins. Justice for Rhea Seehorn. At least Saul is in good company: here are 10 other great shows that never won an Emmy.

BoJack Horseman

Number of nominations: 3

Only two animated shows have been up for Outstanding Comedy Series: The Flintstones and Family Guy. BoJack Horseman, which blended goofy comedy and deep sadness like few shows ever have, should have been the third (or, more accurately, the 12th after The Simpsons, Futurama, South Park, etc.), but it was kept in the animated categories, where it lost three times.

Chappelle’s Show

Number of nominations: 3

Chappelle, of course, was the co-creator and star of Chappelle’s Show, the most widely-quoted comedy of the early 2000s. The love for the sketch series didn’t extend to the Emmys, however, which only found room for three nominations (no wins). Other shut-out classic Comedy Central shows, like Nathan for You, Detroiters, and Review, can relate.

Good Times

Number of nominations: 0

Host Anthony Anderson sang the Good Times theme song during Sunday’s Emmys, but it was too little, too late: the show wasn’t nominated even once.

Halt and Catch Fire

Number of nominations: 1

Did Emmy voters stop watching Halt and Catch Fire after season one? I don’t blame them: it started as a mediocre Mad Men rip-off. But once the drama became more of an ensemble, it blossomed into one of the best shows of the 2010s. Season three, in particular, is essential viewing.

Hannibal

Number of nominations: 1

At least the one nomination it got was for visual effects? (It didn’t win.)

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Number of nominations: 0

It’s Always Sunny‘s lack of recognition from the Emmys is so notorious, there’s an entire episode of the show about it. The only time the Gang — Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito — was even invited to the ceremony together was when McElhenney’s other show, Welcome to Wrexham, won a bunch of awards.

The Leftovers

Number of nominations: 1

Parks and Recreation

Number of nominations: 14

I’m shocked, too, but the feel-good comedy of the Obama era was up for over a dozen Emmys, including Amy Poehler for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series four times (zero nominations for Nick Offerman, Chris Pratt, and Aubrey Plaza), with zero wins. Creator Michael Schur didn’t fare any better with his next show: The Good Place was zero for 13.

Star Trek

Number of nominations: 13

To give the Emmys some credit, Star Trek, which aired for three little-seen seasons and didn’t become a hit until it entered syndication, was nominated for Outstanding Dramatic Series twice. That’s very ahead of time for them. To take that credit away, Star Trek never won anything, not even for writing for “The City on the Edge of Forever.”

The Wire

Number of nominations: 2

Better Call Saul never winning an Emmy is one thing (that thing is bad). But it’s appalling that The Wire, a candidate for the greatest TV drama ever, only got two nominations (Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series twice) during its five-season run — and it didn’t even win those. An all-time terrible omission.

Uproxx formulated their most anticipated albums slated to drop in 2024. Although Khruangbin didn’t make the list, it wasn’t because fans aren’t yearning for a body of work from the band. Following their jam-packed schedule on the road, recording a new project just didn’t seem to be a priority for the group.

However, on January 16, Khruangbin shocked fans by announcing their first solo album in four years, A La Sala. In 2022, the group linked up with Vieux Farka Touré for Ali, and there was the Texas Moon EP with Leon Bridges that same year, but fans have been craving a new stand-alone collection from Khruangbin. To give their supporters a taste of what’s to come, Khruangbin dropped the album’s lead single, “A Love International.”

Khruangbin’s genre-fluidity has helped them amass a broad fan base, and their latest song, “A Love International,” maintains that creative stronghold. From the sonic dance of the guitar and bass, you cannot help but find yourself lost in the melody of the record. A La Sala is sure to be equally as addictive.

We’d all like to believe that we know our pets. Every pet has their own distinctive look and even if they look like a sibling, they have different personalities making it much easier to identify your pet. But every once in awhile there’s a bit of a mixup where you see a cat outside that looks like yours so you find yourself frantically darting out the door while your cat is asleep under your bed.

One couple’s cat mixup went in a different direction. They brought their cat inside and piddled around the house for a few hours before settling in for a snuggle session on the couch. It was then that the cat’s mom noticed a cat outside that looked exactly like their cuddly little guy.

Instantly you see the confusion and concern register when they look closely at the imposter enjoying all the extra attention while the other stares from outside. Surely the real cat was offended that his own parents didn’t know they were snuggling up to a generic version of him.

“Babe, look at the cat outside. That looks like you Rado, is that your brother,” the cat mom asks before appearing unsure if the cat in her husband’s arms is actually their cat. Turned out the cat was not theirs and they quickly let the strange cat outside and scooped up their own cat. Commenters found the now viral situation hilarious.

One person writes, “slight error in the cat distribution system.”

Another commenter says, “the way its body language is screaming ‘kidnapped.'”

Someone laughs, “the fact that the cat was going to play it off and continue his days as Rado.”

“Plot twist,” a commenter writes. “Cats been switching places for months and they just noticed.”

In a follow up video, Brandon Robert, Rado’s dad, shows the photo a their actual cat and the imposter. They’re strikingly similar so it’s easy to see how Robert picked up the wrong cat while not wearing his glasses. Thankfully all is well now and their cat is back inside where he belongs but you can watch the hilarious moment of realization below.
