Indie Mixtape 20: @ Stay Innovative On Their 5-Track EP ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, @’

At @ band 2024

What do you get when you combine folk music, hyperpop, and terrible SEO? The answer is @ (pronounced “at”), the musical duo of Victoria Rose and Stone Filipczak. But no matter how hard it is to find the band in a Google search, their innovative music has won over indie fans and critics alike.

@’s 2023 debut album Mind Palace Music was written almost entirely remote by sending each other snippets and voice notes via iMessage, resulting in a project hailed for its inventiveness. The band describes their sound as hyperfolk,” which is an all-around accurate description of their music (their new track “Soul Hole” sounds like a hyperpop artist covering Dirty Projectors).

Now, less than a year later, @ are prepping the release of a batch of new songs in the form of the forthcoming EP Are You There God, It’s Me, @, which drops Friday via Carpark. Much like Mind Palace Music, Are You There God, It’s Me, @ seamlessly blends analog and digital elements with lyrics inspired by imagery of AI and computers, like on the trance-like single “Webcrawler.”

Ahead of Are You There God, It’s Me, @, Filipczak and Rose sit down with Uproxx to talk David Bowie, creamed spinach, and dropping acid in our latest Q&A.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Filipczak: I’ve heard this one.

It’s 2050 and the world hasn’t ended and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

Rose: If people are still listening to our music in 2050 then it’s been pretty successful, so however it’s being remembered is just fine.

Who’s the person who has most inspired your work, and why?

Filipczak: The other bandmate, for obvious reasons.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life and what was it?

Rose: I eat the best meal of my life several times a year at an Ethiopian restaurant called Abyssinia in West Philly. I get the Abyssina 2 which is a combo platter and I have never once in my life gotten sick of eating it.

Tell us about the best concert you’ve ever attended.

Filipczak: Sun Ra Arkestra at Fields Fest.

What song never fails to make you emotional?

Filipczak: “Life On Mars” by David Bowie.

What’s the last thing you Googled?

Rose: Creamed spinach.

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever crashed while on tour?

Filipczak: On a pile of ripped up foam in the same room we played, house show in Richmond.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform and what’s the city you hope to perform in for the first time?

Filipczak: Baltimore, MD obviously! We’re playing a ton of European cities for the first time next month — we’ve also never played Los Angeles.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Rose: “Do not drop 2 whole tabs of acid at once on that one time.”

What’s one of your hidden talents?

Filipczak: Object repair.

If you had a million dollars to donate to charity, what cause would you support and why?

Rose: I don’t really like this question because neither of us have a million dollars, but there’s an active genocide going on in Gaza, and we should all be doing what we can, funds or not, to continue working towards a ceasefire and bringing an end to apartheid against Palestinians.

What are your thoughts about AI and the future of music?

Rose: I want to be careful with this, because I don’t really know much about in which ways AI is on its way to contributing to the future of music. We also have to accept that an AI driven world is coming for us whether we want it to or not. But I think that implementing AI in the elements of music making directly related to the writing or recording would probably flatten the dynamics that come about through accidents and experimentation. Those are the details in music that often end up being most potent in connecting to the listener, and I think that minimizing the space to create those details would be very bad for the future of music. However, if we’re talking about using AI to make DAW processing more efficient that could be useful.

You are throwing a music festival. Give us the dream lineup of 5 artists that will perform with you and the location it would be held.

Filipczak: Wolf Eyes, Black Dice, Chris Weisman, Horse Lords, Bugs and Rats, at the Elk’s Lodge in Cambridge, MA (tried to keep this one fairly realistic / possible)

Who’s your favorite person to follow on social media?

Rose: Right now it’s @jeremyfragrance on Instagram.

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

Rose: Not my first, but my 3rd(?) tattoo was done in 2017 by my friend Jen in a bedroom that Stone was subletting in Boston, at this magical house on Union Street. There was a snow storm going on, and Stone was playing through the entirety of Hallowed Ground by Violent Femmes for us on his laptop. I was surprised to find a half hour field recording of that moment about 2 years ago on Stone’s Tascam. The tattoo is of this little creature with horns playing a tom, or maybe eating a salad.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Rose: Rushing to load in on time.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

Rose: Flick from A Bug’s Life.

You have a month off and the resources to take a dream vacation. Where are you going and who is coming with you?

Filipczak: This is basically what’s happening with Europe tour next month, so we’ll just shout out our amazing band, Nino Soberon and Nina Ryser.

What is your biggest fear?

Rose: Not finding peace and fulfillment in this lifetime.

Are You There God, It’s Me, @ is out 1/12 via Carpark. Find more information here.

Donald Glover And Maya Erskine Fall In Love (And Dispose Of Bodies Together) In The ‘Mr. And Mrs. Smith’ Trailer

“Who needs this show?” That was the question posed in an open letter by Francesca Sloane, the creator of the show in question, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. “In a culture heavily inundated with remakes, this was a reasonable reaction. No one would need a show that retold the same blockbuster movie,” she wrote. “But what we set out to do was to make something wholly original.”

Sloane added, “On our show, we go on the journey of seeing these two ordinary people become extraordinary. We watch them become stronger spies but more vulnerable humans. We hope that you laugh. We hope that it makes you feel something. We hope that you enjoy the big swing.”

To go back to the initial question, who needs a sexy, thrilling, funny spy show starring Atlanta‘s Donald Glover and Blue Eye Samurai‘s Maya Erskine? The answer: me. And probably a lot of other people, too. You can watch the first full-length trailer — featuring explosions, admissions of love, and a dead body in a bathtub — for Amazon Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith above.

Here’s more:

In this version, two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?

All eight episodes of Mr. & Mrs. Smith premiere on Amazon Prime Video on February 2nd.

In Case You Forgot People Are Obsessed With Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce, They’re Both Nominated For 2024 People’s Choice Awards

Taylor Swift Golden Globes 2024
Getty Image

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got big reputations. Yes, I am perpetually on Reputation (Taylor’s Version) watch and will use any excuse to quote “End Game.” The more cringeworthy, the better! In this case, Kelce and Swift are each nominated at the upcoming 2024 People’s Choice Awards.

Anyway, Swift is up for five awards: Female Artist Of The Year, Pop Artist Of The Year, Concert Tour Of The Year (The Eras Tour), Movie Of The Year (Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour), and Social Celebrity Of The Year. Kelce, meanwhile, is up for Athlete Of The Year alongside Coco Gauff, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Lionel Messi, Sabrina Ionescu, Simone Biles, and Stephen Curry.

Kelce and Swift are shockingly not nominated for Most Mania-Inducing Celebrity Couple Of The Year, but if that were a category, they would be a surer bet to win than the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Although, to be fair, they are not the only couple sharing People’s Choice Awards nods, as Kelsea Ballerini and Chase Stokes are each nominated as well.

The 2024 People’s Choice Awards is scheduled for February 18 at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. The ceremony will broadcast live beginning at 8 p.m. ET across E!, NBC, and Peacock.

See the full list of nominees below (via Billboard).

FKA Twigs Feels There’s ‘Some Double Standards’ After The UK Banned Her Skin-Bearing Calvin Klein Ad

FKA Twigs appeared in a Calvin Klein ad in the Spring of 2023, where the singer posed half nude. Now, nearly a year later, it was recently banned in the UK for portraying her as a “sterotypical sexual object,” according to the UK Advertising Standards Authority.

Now, Twigs herself has responded to the ban on Instagram.

“i do not see the ‘stereotypical sexual object’ that they have labelled me,” she wrote. “i see a beautiful strong woman of colour whose incredible body has overcome more pain than you can imagine.”

“in light of reviewing other campaigns past and current of this nature, I can’t help but feel there are some double standards here,” she added. “so to be clear… i am proud of my physicality and hold the art i create with my vessel to the standards of women like josephine baker, eartha kitt and grace jones who broke down barriers of what it looks like to be empowered and harness a unique embodied sensuality. thank you to ck and mert and marcus who gave me a space to express myself exactly how i wanted to – i will not have my narrative changed.”

Calvin Klein has also provided a statement on the matter, pointing out that “the ads were similar to ads they had been publishing in the UK for many years,” according to People.

John Mulaney Told A Marvel Joke That Made Robert Downey Jr. Burst Into Laughter

mulaney
Getty Image

The first Oscars of the season were handed out at the Governors Awards earlier this week, with comedy legend Mel Brooks, film editor Carol Littleton, and actress Angela Bassett receiving honorary Academy Awards.

Unlike the Golden Globes, the Governor Awards landed a prepared host in John Mulaney. “Hello, ladies and gentlemen. It is an honor and a favor to be here. This is a strategic obligation. It is a pleasure to stand here on this temporary stage. For those of you that don’t recognize me from the Tuesday night AA meeting in the Palisades, my name is John Mulaney,” he said. Later in his monologue, Mulaney compared Bassett being nominated for an Oscar for a Marvel movie (Black Panther) to “getting a Pulitzer Prize for a Reddit comment.” Robert Downey Jr. really enjoyed that one.

Mulaney joked about Mel Brooks being the most Jewish man who has ever lived (“You know the guy that did the prosthetic nose for Maestro? He did Mel’s entire face and body and personality for the last 97 years”) and also told a funny story about auditioning for the role of “Young Cop” in an untitled Maggie Gyllenhaal project (he didn’t get the part).

Let this man host the Oscars (preferably with co-host Nick Kroll).

Sexyy Red Tried Hiding Her Pregnancy While Touring With Drake But It Physically ‘Hurt’

Sexyy Red 2023

Right now, it’s easy to tell that Sexyy Red is pregnant, as she’s pretty far along. Back when it would have been easier to hide, though, Red tried. It was still challenging, though, when she attempted to conceal her stomach while on tour with Drake and Moneybagg Yo.

In a recent video interview with Billboard, Red said:

“When nobody knew I was pregnant, I’d be in the back room like trying to suck my stomach in, or wear clothes to show that I wasn’t pregnant, and I had to practice my breathing. Like, before I’d go on stage, I had to hold my stomach in and look at myself and be like, ‘Can they tell?’ Once I just was like, ‘OK, I can’t keep hiding it,’ ’cause it hurt to just be on stage all day holding your stomach in, so I’m like, just forget about it. Because I was pregnant on the Drake tour and the Moneybagg [Yo] tour, but nobody knew. People started suspecting it on the Drake tour because there was videos and pictures of me coming out. […] That’s the only reason I was hiding it, because I just wanted me and my family and friends to know.”

Machine Gun Kelly Says He’s ‘Sad At How People Perceive Me In General’ In Response To Backlash Over His Razor Blade Guitar

machine gun kelly 2021
Getty Image

A few days ago, Machine Gun Kelly and Schecter introduced a new signature guitar, dubbed the Razor Blade. The metallic-colored axe was, as the name indicates, designed to look like a razor blade, and reactions to it were often not favorable.

Comments on the introductory Instagram post include, “That is the grossest thing ive ever seen,” “Have you considered unintroducing it?,” and “The edgiest edgelord to ever edge a lord.” There were also many comparing the guitar to comedy guitar brand Chibson, who did share a parody of the MGK guitar, with their version designed to look like a disposable shaving razor.

Kelly himself weighed in on the backlash, and it appears to be weighing on him. On X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “i’ll never explain my art, because true art is conversational and always up for interpretation, but i will say, most of you constantly interpret it wrong. and then blame me for your version of what you think my art is. ultimately im sad at how people perceive me in general. peace.”

In response to a user accusing the guitar of “glorifying self-harm,” Kelly responded, “you show your lack of depth by taking art at face value. this has nothing to do with any of the subject matter you just presented. so no my friend, you suck.”

Steph Curry On The Trade Deadline: ‘The Definition Of Insanity…Doing The Same Thing Expecting A Different Result’

steph curry

Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors are going through a bit of a funk right now. The team got blown out at home by the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night — their sixth loss in eight games — while Curry struggled to get going, scoring 15 points on 4-for-13 shooting. For a franchise that has perpetually high expectations, going through a rough patch like this is especially difficult.

The interesting thing about the Warriors is that they possess plenty of draft capital, large salaries to facilitate a trade, and young talent that could be appealing on the market. It’s not hard to see a path forward for them in the event they want to make a move on the trade market, and the face of their franchise sure seems open to the front office looking for reinforcements.

“We have a standard that’s pretty evident that, if things stay the same, that’s the definition of insanity, right?” Curry said. “Keep doing the same thing expecting a different result? So, as players and what we can do, we have to control our effort, our focus, competitiveness, control the things that we can on the court. Like any NBA season, every organization has stuff that works itself out, you can’t allow yourself to get distracted by that because, whether you’re top of the standings or the bottom, there’s always rumors swirling, there’s always conversations. It’s just a part of the business. Until anything happens, you can’t get caught up in it, cause it’ll rob you of your opportunity to play good basketball.”

Curry is not the kind of guy who will explicitly call for the team to shake things up, and even here, he was able to get things back on track by saying the players have to control what they can control. Still, between this and Steve Kerr saying the Warriors are lacking confidence right now, it sure is an unusually interesting time for a franchise that hasn’t had to navigate this sort of turmoil in a while.

Steve Kerr Says The Warriors Are ‘Lacking Confidence’ After They Lost To The Pelicans By 36 Points

steve kerr
Getty Image

The Golden State Warriors are in a pretty major rut right now. The team has lost six of its last eight games, and on Wednesday night, the Warriors followed up a 15-point home loss to the Toronto Raptors with a 36-point home loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

While Golden State is dealing with a recent injury to Chris Paul and Draymond Green is on his way back from a suspension, watching the team lose this emphatically is not something that anyone is used to in the Steph Curry era. And after the loss to New Orleans, Steve Kerr tried to get to the heart of what is wrong.

“I think we’re just lacking confidence right now,” Kerr said. “You get to a stage sometimes where you just kinda lose your belief. It happens. And that’s what’s happened with our team right now the last few days. I think we’ve just lost the spirit, the confidence that has to carry you against talented teams, night in and night out.”

Kerr went on to say that, over the last two games, the Warriors just weren’t competitive, and then recalled something a coach said to him.

“One of the coaches on the way down said we’re the quietest team ever,” Kerr said. “I think without Draymond and Chris, it’s really exposed. There’s not much chatter defensively, we do have a very quiet group of guys with this particular team that’s out there now, and we probably need a pick me up. We need Draymond, we need guys who can kind of rally the troops right now. When you’re going through it like this, there’s only one way out, and that’s to fight together, to compete together. Somehow, we gotta get stops — we gave up 141 points, they scored at will. And we have to be able to get stops to be competitive.”

Trump Got Super Mad That People Keep Bringing Up That He Said He’d Be A ‘Dictator’ (After Saying It Again)

trump jd vance mad
Getty Image

Hard as this is to believe, but a lot of people don’t like it when someone running for president says they want to be a dictator. It doesn’t exactly set the mind at ease. Even if that person says they’ll “only” go autocratic for a day, that’s not very reassuring, is it? Does anyone really think that someone who wants to be a dictator will seriously give up those powers after only 24 hours. Anyway, to the surprise of few, Donald Trump finally said exactly that.

It took him till his third presidential campaign, but he said he’d be a dictator, but just for one day, so he can get a tick a couple biggies off his to-do list. The response wasn’t so hot. And at a Fox News town hall Wednesday, Trump got mad about that…but only after saying he’d be a dictator all over again.

Last month, at another Fox News town hall, Trump was asked by his good buddy Sean Hannity a softball question: He asked the former president, who was last year indicted on 91 criminal charges, to swear he’d never go abuse his powers if re-elected. Trump couldn’t even do that.

“Except for day one,” Trump said, attempting to be reassuring. “I want to close the border and I want to drill, drill, drill.” He added, “After that, I’m not a dictator, okay?”

A month of bad press later and Trump can’t believe that people aren’t cool with a presidential candidate saying they’d be a dictator but only temporarily.

“All I said [is] I’m gonna be a dictator for one day,” Trump fumed at Wednesday’s town hall. “We’re gonna do two things: the border, we’re gonna make it so tight you can’t get in, unless you come in legally; and the other is energy. We’re gonna drill, baby, drill. After that I’m not going to be a dictator.”

Feel better? Surely it only takes a day to tighten the border and drill for oil in places maybe one shouldn’t lest you screw up the environment. And again, dictators always relinquish power when they say they will. It’s not like the words “after that I’m not going to be a dictator” aren’t as calming as Trump thinks they are.

But Trump didn’t see what was up with all the hoopla. He accused the press of taking him out of context, cutting it after the part where he said “I’m going to be a dictator.”

“They cut the rest of the sentence!” Trump marveled. He then said the opposite. “No, no. I’m not going to be a dictator. I’m going to manage, like we did…We were so successful that the country was coming together, it was actually coming together and coming together well. There was a beautiful thing to see. And we’re going to do it again.”

It’s not clear what Trump was referring to with the “coming together” part. The last year of his presidency saw a badly bungled federal response to a once-in-a-century pandemic, a spike in unemployment, mass protests over systemic racism (which included his administration teargassing its own citizens), and it concluded with him spreading voter fraud nonsense after he lost re-election. The country was rarely less together.
