Netflix has brought their own version of May flowers to the table with a bouquet full of new movies and TV shows. That is to say, if you have already finished enjoying the Tom Hardy-starring Havoc and Neo-Western series Ransom Canyon from last month, do not fear because this platform is always adding more fuel to the streaming fire. That includes an instant classic of the zombie sub-genre that can be revisited in between The Last Of Us episodes.

Here’s everything coming to Netflix in May:

Sirens (Netflix series 5/22)

Another darkly comedic mystery series is upon us, this time starring Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, Meghann Fahy, and Milly Alcock, who portray characters entrenched in murkier waters than expected at a luxury beach-type retreat. Does somebody smell a cult? Yes, probably. This project will explore class, power, and an attempted intervention when one character cannot seem to get enough of either of those concepts, and if you didn’t already guess from the title, there shall be cues from Greek mythology.

Love, Death & Robots (Netflix series 5/15)

Deadpool director Tim Miller and Mindhunter executive producer David Fincher, and supervising director Jennifer Yuh Nelson are back with another editing of bleeding-edge animation shorts, this time with stories about “dinosaur gladiators, messianic cats,” and “string-puppet rock stars.” No matter what, you’re sure to find experiences here that will both please and offend, so dive into the abyss, y’all.

Dept. Q (Netflix series 5/29)

The Queen’s Gambit won’t receive a second season, but writer and director Scott Frank is here with a followup show about a brilliant, sarcastic cop, Carl, who simply cannot get along with his colleagues. After he is exiled to a different unit, Carl builds his own support gang and takes on cold cases with much more success than expected. And as The Night Agent viewers can attest, basement banishments can really backfire on authority.

Big Mouth: Season 8 (Netflix series 5/23)

The hormone monsters are on the way out the door with this description: “In the end, our kids step into the harrowing unknown of the future, made less afraid of what’s to come because they have each other.” This season, guest stars include Cynthia Erivo, Quinta Brunson, Billy Porter, Ali Wong, Keke Palmer, Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi, Nathan Fillion, Kristen Wiig, and Craig Robinson. They join regulars John Mulaney, Jordan Peele, Maya Rudolph, Andrew Rannells, Nick Kroll,Jason Mantzoukas, Fred Armisen, and (last but not least) Ayo Edebiri.

Train To Busan (Next Entertainment World film streaming on Netflix 5/2)

Lil Wayne may not have gotten to perform at the Super Bowl in his hometown, New Orleans, but he’s still getting to work with the NFL, expressing his undying love for the Green Bay Packers in the process. A self-professed, lifelong Cheese-head, Wayne has teamed up with Mitchell & Ness to celebrate the impending release of his new album Tha Carter VI with a limited-edition merch collection highlighting both legacies: Wayne’s and the Packers’.

In the press release, Wayne said, “We had to create something that reps the G but still drips with that Tunechi flavor. It’s more than merch. It represents legacy, loyalty and a little bit of luxury for the real ones.”

The merch collection includes t-shirts, hoodies, and of course, a football jersey all bearing a customized Packers “G” logo referencing the fandom’s nickname, along with a “VI” motif nodding to the album’s title. You can find more info about the drop here.

Tha Carter VI is expected to release on June 6, and reportedly features a who’s-who of guest performers, from Miley Cyrus to Andrea Bocelli, as well as Wayne’s son Kameron Carter. Wayne also has a concert planned at Madison Square Garden the night of the album’s release.

One of “hip-hop’s most promising newcomers” has made it. Texas-based rapper BigXthaPlug scored his first top-10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 this week with “All The Way,” a collaboration with country crooner Bailey Zimmerman. He also made his television debut on Tuesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing a medley of “The Largest” and “Mmhmm.”

It was a big moment for BigXthaPlug, and to celebrate the occasion, he presented host Jimmy Kimmel with a Texas-shaped chain. “I just wanted to bring by this gift for you,” he told Kimmel in a video shared by the show’s Instagram account. When Kimmel said it was unnecessary, BigXthaPlug replied, “I come bearing gifts as always, man. We’re twinning. I have one as well.” They posed together, with Kimmel joking that he feels like a princess.

BigXthaPlug can probably afford to let one chain go: he recently showed off his $1.2M collection in a video for GQ. “My first piece of jewelry I bought was these two chains. It was a cross… but it was just a little circle and they had me and my son and I lost one of ’em in Houston,” he said. “I don’t know where I lost the other one at. I done lost so many bracelets, rings, chains. I done lost for sure over like $80, maybe $90,000 worth of jewelry. It happens.”

Can Sound Check host Jeremy Hecht keep his winning streak alive in a supersized episode with West Coast upstart OhGeesy? Adding an extra round, Jeremy throws a few curveballs at the party rap purveyor, giving him some unusual choices for “Get The Money” anthems (50 Cent’s “I Get Money” vs. Pink Floyd’s “Money”), rap group hits (Diplomats’ “I Really Mean It” vs. Three Six Mafia’s “Poppin’ My Collar”), and cross-coastal faves (ASAP Rocky’s “Peso” vs. Nipsey Hussle’s “Racks In The Middle”).

Here’s how it works: Through the first seven rounds — although as noted, this episode features eight rounds instead — Jeremy plays two songs for the guest based on some part of their career or personality. In the final round, though, the host has to pick between two songs: the guest’s “life anthem,” and a decoy song written down by our production team to find out if he’s really learned the guest’s musical tastes.

With her slew of recent singles, underwear enthusiast Addison Rae has clearly been working her way towards a debut album. Now, that’s confirmed: Today, Rae announced Addison, set for release on June 6.

Listings on Rae’s online store refer to the project as “the first & last album by Addison Rae.” An Apple Music listing notes the project will have 12 tracks, including “Diet Pepsi,” “Aquamarine,” “High Fashion,” and “Headphones On,” while the rest don’t have confirmed titles.

As far as the “last album” bit, that might refer to Rae’s potential desire for rebranding. In a new Elle feature, Rae said, “I feel like I’ve surpassed Addison Rae. It’s just Addison now.”

Rae also said of her artistic background, “Growing up as a dancer was such a natural transition into that sound. I was interested in how that music made you feel, and how it made your body move. I think music is mind control — it opens up this portal of energy.”

She also said more generally, “I have the luxury now to say no to things I’m not interested in, or that don’t feel like me or aren’t reflective of who I am. It’s still a job, at the end of the day. Everybody is trying to survive — I’m trying to survive and live here and do all these things that I love — but I definitely have become more intentional, because I do think saying no to things opens up a door for a much better yes.”

Uwade was born in Nigeria but cut her teeth in North Carolina. You may remember hearing her vocals on Fleet Foxes’ 2020 album Shore, or seeing her open for artists including The Strokes, Jamila Woods, Sylvan Esso, and Local Natives.

This was all while she was studying at Columbia and Oxford, but now, she’s launching her music career in earnest with her debut album, Florilegium. The project is set for April 25 and it features Afrobeats-inspired songs like “Harmattan.”

Ahead of the album’s release, Uwade sat down with Uproxx to talk about Latin, Yoruba food, Harry Styles, and more in our latest Q&A.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Grounding, gentle, melancholic, energetic.

It’s 2050 and the world hasn’t ended and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

As a soothing force that inspired a healthy mix of introspection and dancing!

Who’s the person who has most inspired your work, and why?

My dad. He taught me what it means to appreciate the sublime. He would regularly cry when he encountered beautiful things, so from a young age, I sought those moments of transcendence in my own listening and creative exploration.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life and what was it?

Last summer (2024) I had a Yoruba dish called “àbùlà” at a restaurant called Amala/Abula Spot on Okun-Ajah Road in Lagos. Amala + ewedu + gbegiri + stew. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Tell us about the best concert you’ve ever attended.

When I was in high school I went to a Chance The Rapper concert with a dear friend and my mom. It was a great concert, but what made it the best was that my mom, who is in no way a regular concertgoer, was in the pit with my friend and I just because she didn’t want us to be unaccompanied. Half the time, I was lost in the music, and the other half, I was making sure my mom didn’t get lost in the crowd.

What song never fails to make you emotional?

The Ratatouille main theme by Michael Giacchino.

What’s the last thing you Googled?

“Sequence of tenses in indirect discourse latin”.

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever crashed while on tour?

A tour bus. Very cool, of course, but also kind of weird.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform and what’s the city you hope to perform in for the first time?

I really love Paris, so any time I get to spend there is a blessing. And I want to perform in Lagos someday soon!

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Do the things that feel hard now, it will make your life so much easier later. Also mom is right: If you’re sad or stressed, it’s because you be on that phone!

What’s one of your hidden talents?

I think I’m quite good at giving massages.

If you had a million dollars to donate to charity, what cause would you support and why?

I’d donate to sickle cell disease research in honor of my brother who passed away from the illness.

What are your thoughts about AI and the future of music?

I’m pretty skeptical about the idea of AI taking over the music industry or anything like that. Sure, there will always be people who want to use technology to churn out more stuff and drive up profits, but I think deep down we want to experience each other, rough and real.

No food so I’m not gassy on stage, little bit of eye makeup if I’m feeling it, and then suddenly get nervous until it’s all over.

My first deep one that was unfortunately exacerbated by my unrestricted internet access as a 6th grader… Harry Styles.

You have a month off and the resources to take a dream vacation. Where are you going and who is coming with you?

I’ve never been to Jamaica, but I think it would be good for my spirit to visit.

What is your biggest fear?

Well, they say you attract what you fear, so in that case, I’m terrified of 10 million dollars.

Coachella 2025 has come and gone, so now it’s on to the next big thing in music: the American Music Awards. The ceremony is going down on May 26 and will air live at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+. Jennifer Lopez is hosting, but she of course won’t be the only star in attendance: Today (April 23), the full list of nominations was announced.

Last week, Yaya Bey released her first song “merlot and grigio” for artist-forward label drink sum wtr. What we didn’t know at the time is that it would be our first listen to her just-announced album, Do It Afraid.

“I wrote this album from the most vulnerable parts of me, which contrary to what many people want to believe about me, is not my trauma but my desire to love, to feel joy… to be free,” Bey wrote in a statement.

She continued, “In this life, pain and loss are promised to us; it takes real courage to dance in the face of the inevitable. To savor the now and make it beautiful. I come from a people who are masters at this. Onlookers like to make a spectacle of us. Rob of us of our nuance. But the truth is we are brave, resilient, and joyful. I made this album for us. May we continue to do it afraid.”

James Gunn made it known that he doesn’t work with a-holes, which means that both John Cena and Idris Elba must be pretty good guys. The Suicide Squad castmates‘ newest characters, however, might be a-holes and definitely cannot stand each other in the action-comedy movie Heads Of State. Cena portrays U.S President Will Derringer with Elba as UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke, and they’re not exactly fans of each other but determined not to screw up diplomatic relations between their two nations.

Based upon that information alone, Amazon MGM Studios’ Heads Of State might be the movie that we need right now. Add in Priyanka Chopra Jonas as the agent assigned to protect both their butts when they fall into peril and Jack Quaid as some kind of groovy arsenal keeper, and the ingredients for one-liner success appear to be in place. You can watch the high-octane trailer above, and here’s a handy synopsis:

[W]hen they become the targets of a powerful and ruthless foreign adversary-who proves more than a match for the two leaders’ security forces-they are begrudgingly forced to rely on the only two people they can trust: each other. Ultimately allied with the brilliant MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), they must go on the run and find a way to work together long enough to thwart a global conspiracy that threatens the entire free world.

Heads Of State also co-stars Paddy Considine, Stephen Root, Sarah Niles, and the always fantastic Carla Gugino, and July 2 is the day that the film lands on Prime Video. Just in time for fireworks.
