Why Was ‘Swagger’ Canceled On Apple TV?

'Swagger' S2 E8 Coach Ike Jace Carson
APPLE TV

Last week Apple TV+ cancelled Swagger, the acclaimed show about a high school basketball player. Inspired by the life of Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant, it ran for two seasons, with Isaiah Hill playing the stand-in character Jace Carson. But why did the streaming giant decide not to bring it back for round 3?

The reasons, as with many shows unceremoniously cancelled mid-stream, have not been made public. The closest thing to an explanation comes from the show’s creator, Reggie Rock Bythewood, who opened up — as much as he could — about the cancellation in a post on Instagram.

“What an amazing adventure,” Bythewood wrote. “In our two seasons, we have launched careers, disrupted genre, brought forth humanity through our characters, told stories we care deeply about, revolutionized the way to shoot basketball and had fun.

“Apple, while you are not ordering a season three, I made the show I wanted to make. Thank you for that,” he added. “For our FAMbase, you lifted us in ways we could have never imagined. To the industry, don’t take your foot off the gas. Keep telling our stories.”

When it returned for Season 2 this summer, Swagger also brought with it a new track from IDK, entitled “Win.”

While Swagger won’t be receiving any more episodes, the 18 that were made live on Apple TV+.

8 changes that were made to a classic Richard Scarry book to keep up with the times. Progress!

Remember those beloved Richard Scarry books?

Books from when you were a kid?

Like a lot of people, I grew up reading them.

And now, I read them to my kids.

books, education, philosophy

If that doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps this character from the “Busytown” series will. Classic!

evolution, gender roles, equality

Scarry was an incredibly prolific children’s author and illustrator. He created over 250 books during his career. His books were loved across the world — over 100 million were sold in many languages.

But here’s something you may not have known about these classics: They’ve been slowly changing over the years.

Don’t panic! They’ve been changing in a good way.

Scarry started publishing books in the 1950s, when times were, well, a little different. So some of the details were quietly updated.

Alan Taylor, a senior editor for the photo section of The Atlantic, noticed differences back in 2005 and decided to photograph them. From his Flickr album:

“The 1963 edition is my own, bought for me in the late 60’s when I was a toddler, and read to tatters. The 1991 edition belongs to my kids today. I was so familiar with the older one that I immediately started noticing a few differences, and so have catalogued 14 of the more interesting differences here in this collection.”

Taylor found 14 pages with differences between the original and updated versions.

Here are eight changes that reflect some of the progress society has made:

1. First up: The cover got a makeover. It might seem subtle at first glance, but look closely.

words, growth, creative

The original has a woman (bunny) in the kitchen, while the updated cover has both a man and a woman (still bunnies) in the kitchen. Also: The “policeman” bear changed to a woman, and the label changed to “police officer.” The word “mailman” became “letter carrier,” and a female farmer was added. Oh, and we went from a cat-mom pushing the stroller to cat-dad! Progress!

(The bunny brushing its teeth in the house was changed from a boy to a girl, but I’m not gonna read into that because hopefully all bunny-kids brush their teeth, right? I mean, for the sake of their little bunny teefs!)

2. Men can be flight attendants and women can be pilots. And, you know, they don’t have to be hot.

jobs, career, fairness

While the gender of each role remained the same in the newer version (which is, unfortunately, pretty legit, given the glaring lack of female pilots in real life), the stereotyping was eliminated by making the “handsome pilot” more of an everyday “pilot” (raccoon?) and by turning the “pretty stewardess” into a regular flight attendant.

3. Christmas isn’t the only holiday people celebrate.

inclusive, menorah, bears

Shhhh: Don’t tell the Starbucks Christmas cup haters this, but there are a lot more winter holidays than just Christmas. The newer version of the book included a menorah in the blank space to recognize those who celebrate Hanukkah.

4. Mommy Bears are no longer expected to have breakfast prepared for Daddy Bears…

mommy bears, daddy bears, best word book ever

…and the subtle change from “called to breakfast” to “goes to the kitchen to eat his breakfast” reflects that.

(Side note: Do Daddy Bears realllllly want to be treated like Kid Bears by being called to a meal, where they must promptly appear? I’m thinking not.)

5. Because guess what?! Dads can cook, too! (Even Dad Bunnies.)

professionals, professions, 20th century

And Richard Scarry’s book was updated to reflect the late-20th-century realization that everyone belongs in the kitchen!

6. Helping professions aren’t just for men.

cowboys, grown ups, characters

The updated version recognized that fact by changing “policeman” to “police officer” and “fireman” to “fire fighter.” The ever-important job of cowboy was eliminated ( sigh … how many career hopes and dreams were squashed?), replaced with a gardener and a scientist, both of which are filled by female characters. Three cheers for women in STEM! Also: The milkman was replaced by a taxi driver, but I’m pretty sure that was had to do with the fact that milkman (or woman) isn’t a growing occupation any longer.

7. Regular people need rescuing, too.

firemen, danger, hopes

The newer version did away with the “beautiful screaming lady” (sigh… how many career hopes and dreams … oh, wait — none) and replaced her with a regular “cat in danger.” The “jumping gentleman” label was removed altogether, and the “fireman” became a “fire fighter” again.

8. “I” is for “ice cream” — and not stereotypical depictions of Native Americans.

dreams, updates, Florida State University

We’re still waiting for our football teams to get with the times, but the folks behind the Richard Scarry book update eliminated the “Indian” character that was wearing stereotypical clothing.

Yay, progress! And before you shrug and say “It’s just a book,” listen to this:

Florida State University recently led “the most comprehensive study of 20th century children’s books ever undertaken in the United States.” As you can surely guess, they found a gender bias toward male lead characters, even in books about animals — books like those by Richard Scarry.

Janice McCabe, the assistant professor of sociology who led the study, wrote:

“The widespread pattern of underrepresentation of females that we find supports the belief that female characters are less important and interesting than male characters. This may contribute to a sense of unimportance among girls and privilege among boys. The gender inequalities we found may be particularly powerful because they are reinforced by patterns of male-dominated characters in many other aspects of children’s media, including cartoons, G-rated films, video games and even coloring books.”

It’s kind of cool to think these changes were made at least two and a half decades ago! That’s something.

And we need changes to keep happening! Kids should be able to read books with same-sex couples and characters who have disabilities, for example, because those are everyday occurrences and books are a great intro to the world for kids.

Anyone else up for modernizing other classic kids’ books so we can feel good about sharing them with our kids?

Voice recordings of people who were enslaved offer incredible first-person accounts of U.S. history

When we think about the era of American slavery, many of us tend to think of it as the far distant past. While slavery doesn’t exist as a formal institution today, there are people living who knew formerly enslaved black Americans first-hand. In the wide arc of history, the legal enslavement of people on U.S. soil is a recent occurrence—so recent, in fact, that we have voice recordings of interviews with people who lived it.

Many of us have read written accounts of enslavement, from Frederick Douglass’s autobiography to some of the 2,300 first-person accounts housed in the Library of Congress. But how many of us have heard the actual voices of people who were enslaved telling their own stories?

ABC News’ Nightline with Ted Koppel aired a segment in 1999 in which we can hear the first-person accounts of people who had been enslaved taken from interviews conducted in the 1930s and 40s (also housed in the Library of Congress). They include the voice of a man named Fountain Hughes, who was born into slavery in 1848 and whose grandfather had “belonged to” Thomas Jefferson.

As Koppel says in the segment, “The results of these digitally enhanced recordings are arresting, almost unbelievable. The idea of hearing the voices of actual slaves from the plantations of the Old South is as powerful—as startling, really—as if you could hear Abraham Lincoln or Robert E. Lee speak.”

Indeed, hearing formerly enslaved people share their experiences of being bought and sold like cattle, sleeping on bare pallets, and witnessing whippings for insubordination is a heartbreaking reminder of how close we are to this ugly chapter of our history. The segment is well worth ten minutes to watch:

A couple in their 50s live permanently on a cruise ship because it’s cheaper than a mortgage

Imagine retiring early and spending the rest of your life on a cruise ship visiting exotic locations, meeting interesting people and eating delectable food. It sounds fantastic, but surely it’s a billionaire’s fantasy, right?

Not according to Angelyn Burk, 53, and her husband Richard. They’re living their best life hopping from ship to ship for around $100 a night, depending on the cruise. “Cruise costs vary quite a bit, our goal is to average about $100 per night, for the couple, or less across and entire calendar year,” Richard told Upworthy.

The Burks have called cruise ships their home since May 2021 and have no plans to go back to their lives as landlubbers. Angelyn took her first cruise in 1992 and it changed her goals in life forever.

“Our original plan was to stay in different countries for a month at a time and eventually retire to cruise ships as we got older,” Angelyn told 7 News. But a few years back, Angelyn crunched the numbers and realized they could start much sooner than expected.

“We love to travel and we were searching for a way to continuously travel in our retirement that made financial sense,” she said. They looked into deals they could find through loyalty memberships and then factored in the potential sale price of their home and realized their dream was totally affordable.

The rough math makes sense. If the couple hits their goal of spending $100 per night to live on a cruise ship, that’s $36,500 a year. Currently, the average price of a home in Tukwila, Washington—where the couple has a house—is about $607,000. Let’s say you moved there today, put down 20% and financed the rest, the mortgage would cost you around $44,000 a year.

Plus, on a cruise ship, the couple doesn’t have to pay for groceries.

The Burks are able to live their dream because they’ve spent a lifetime being responsible. “We have been frugal all our lives to save and invest in order to achieve our goal,” she says. “We are not into materialistic things but experiences.”

Angelyn says that cruising takes the stress out of travel. “It is leisurely travel without the complications of booking hotels, restaurants, and transportation while staying within our budget,” she told 7 News. The couple travels lightly with just two suitcases between them and if they need anything, they just buy it on the ship or in the next port.

The one thing to consider before embarking on a never-ending cruise is COVID-19. The coronavirus is easily spread in close quarters and a cruise ship that recently docked in Seattle had 100 people on board who tested positive for the virus. The CDC recommends that people get vaccinated before going on a cruise and that immunocompromised people should consult with their physicians before traveling.

Richard told Upworthy that he believes COVID-19 safety is still very important and has had both his shots and a booster. “I would suggest wearing a mask at all times when out in public no matter whether on a ship, in a movie theater, at a restaurant or even meeting with friends inside or outside,” he said.

After leaving their jobs and the mainland behind, the Burks completed a 21-day cruise via the Panama canal. They look forward to a 50-day cruise around the Adriatic Sea, taking in the sights of Europe, as well as a 51-day cruise from Seattle to Sydney, Australia.

The Burks’ favorite destinations, no matter how they get there, are Italy, Canada, Iceland and the Bahamas, but their ultimate favorite is Singapore.

Looking to give it all up and go on a permanent vacation just like the Burks? Angelyn has some advice for those wanting to get started.

This article was updated on May 17, 2022, after a conversation with Richard Burk.

The hosts of our podcast, “Upworthy Weekly” had a pretty funny take on the story.

Dad takes 7-week paternity leave after his second child is born and is stunned by the results

Participating in paternity leave offers fathers so much more than an opportunity to bond with their new kids. It also allows them to help around the house and take on domestic responsibilities that many new mothers have to face alone…while also tending to a newborn.

All in all, it enables couples to handle the daunting new chapter as a team, making it less stressful on both parties. Or at least equally stressful on both parties. Democracy!

TikTok creator and dad Caleb Remington, from the popular account @ustheremingtons, confesses that for baby number one, he wasn’t able to take a “single day of paternity leave.”

This time around, for baby number two, Remington had the privilege of taking seven weeks off (to be clear—his employer offered four weeks, and he used an additional three weeks of PTO).

The time off changed Remington’s entire outlook on parenting, and his insights are something all parents could probably use.

“It’s unfortunately the end of my maternity —ahem— paternity leave,” Remington quips at the beginning of his video, via voiceover. “I only joke because my wife is truly the man of the house. And call me what you want, but I am totally okay with that.”

He then shares that after getting to spend quality time with his family to create precious memories—losing track of time to “watch ants cross the sidewalk,” for instance—he feels “guilty” about not doing so with their firstborn.

“[It] made me realize how many of those small moments I missed out the first time, but I’m looking past that guilt and grateful that I had some time to make it up,” he says.

You’ll notice that during this entire video, Remington is also doing chores. Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, washing dishes, wiping the countertops…you get the picture.

@ustheremingtons I (caleb) am getting ready to go back into work and i am not ready. Grateful for my four weeks plus 3 weeks of PTO, but i feel like we were just getting into a groove and i was finally getting to have some 1 on 1 time with my son. Picking up the house today because we all function better with a clean space and we haven’t had time to do much of it while surviving these past 7 weeks. I do work from home and find that I have a little more flexibility in helping out here and there but i am also pretty glued and have to be zoned in during work hours. I do however have some pretty awesome and understanding coworkers and company!Shout out to @SAMBAZON Açaí 👊 Tiff is an all star: working and stay at home mom. I am dedicated in doing better to help balance more of the domestic responsibilities. #paternityleave #dadtok #dadsover30 #dadlife #fyp #foryoupage #ditl #ditlvlog #maternityleave #newbornlife #newbornbaby #secondbaby #2under2 #toddlerlife ♬ original sound – Tiffany + Caleb

Why is he doing this? His wife, aka “the lady with the milk bags,” has been so stressed with the house being messy that Remington decided to focus on doing all the housecleaning so that she could spend time with the kids.

Doing a fair share of the domestic labor is something Remington admits to failing at their first time around. Spending seven weeks taking on more responsibilities, however, opened his eyes to the fact that what he previously saw as doing his “fair share” was actually doing “the bare minimum.”

“It has taken multiple conversations — and many ongoing ones — to truly master how to take on more of the mental load of raising children, growing our marriage and taking care of our investments like our home.”

Proof that having difficult conversations can lead to better understanding!

Lastly, Remington reflects on how the emotional turbulence of being new parents challenged his relationship, even though he and his wife were good communicators and aware of how much effort would be required.

“I honestly hated how much we fought, how much I felt misunderstood, and how much I misunderstood her…so now as second-time parents, I feel like we’re a little bit more prepared. Prepared in how we talk to each other, prepared in how I balance work, life, and personal life, and prepared to just let things go,” he says.

Definitely valuable insights for anyone navigating baby number one. Or number five, for that matter.

Remington’s story stands as a great example of just how beneficial paternity leave can be. It offers priceless bonding time, an equal balance of responsibilities, and more time for much needed reflection as parents begin a pivotal new chapter in their lives.

Woman who lives on a cruise ship shares the hardest part about her perfect life

A lot of folks would love to trade lives with Christine Kesteloo. Her husband is the Chief Engineer on a cruise ship, so she gets to live on the boat pretty much for free as the “wife on board.” For Christine, life is a lot like living on a permanent vacation.

“I live on a cruise ship for half the year with my husband, and it’s often as glamorous as it sounds,” she told Insider. “After all, I don’t cook, clean, make my bed, do laundry or pay for food.“

Living an all-inclusive lifestyle seems like paradise, but it has some drawbacks. Having access to all-you-can-eat food all day long can really have an effect on one’s waistline. Kesteloo admits that living on a cruise ship takes a lot of self-discipline because the temptation is always right under her nose.

“One of the hardest things about living on a cruise ship is that I know right now, if I just leave my cabin, I can go and have cookies, pizza, a shake, I could have anything I wanted, and I want it, I absolutely want it,” she said in a TikTok video that received over 400,000 views.

@dutchworld_americangirl

The hardest part about living on a cruise ship is that I am surrounded by free food all of the time anything I want I just had lunch but it’s 2 o’clock in my body tells me it’s either cookie time or time for a hamburger. The hardest part is telling myself not to eat. #hardestpart #cruiseship #livingatsea #koningsdam #weliveonacruiseship #cruisefoodie #foodtok #itsaproblem #halcruises #hollandamericaline

“I am laying here. It is 2 pm. I had a salad for lunch, I had some fresh fruit, but that didn’t fill me up,” she continued. “Right now, all I can think about is eating a burger with some French fries and some mayonnaise.”

“And that, folks, is the absolute hardest part about living on a cruise ship,” she said. “I am surrounded by food all the time.”

She added, “The hardest part is telling myself not to eat.”

Kesteloo’s trouble is a common problem among people on cruise ships. A study by Admiral Travel Insurance found that over 60% of people who go on a week-long cruise anticipate gaining weight. Seventeen percent of people say they gain 2 to 3 pounds on a cruise, while 14% say they gain 4 to 5 pounds.

Other estimates show that the average cruiser will put on 5 to 10 pounds on a weeklong cruise. Imagine living on a cruise ship for half the year, like Kesteloo. She could quickly put on 100 pounds a year if she’s not careful.

“I’d be huge if I lived there. I would feel like I’m on a constant vacation, and who diets on vacation?” Theresa Gramelsapcker-Wilson wrote in the comments.

“This is my main reason why I couldn’t do this HHAHAHAHAHAA,” Cara Mia added.

“I never thought about those who actually live on a cruise ship. I would be 500 pounds,” Lucky Penny2468 said.

Kesteloo’s battle with temptation shows that in every life, a little rain must fall. Nobody ever truly has it perfect. Kesteloo seems to be living the perfect life on board a cruise ship, but she still has to fight temptation every moment of the day or make good use of the ship’s gym facilities. But, obviously, having access to too much food is far better than having too little.

50 Cent Is Reportedly Working To Develop A Documentary About Diddy Following His Sexual Assault Lawsuit Allegations

50 Cent’s longstanding disdain of Diddy appears to have reached new heights. According to Page Six, the former is allegedly working to develop an investigative documentary about latter and his legal woes. Given 50 Cent’s troll-like tendencies and the public pressure Diddy is facing following the strings of sexual assault lawsuits, people online are throwing their support behind the idea.

Although Diddy has maintained his innocence, 50 Cent is confident he has the investigative skills to find proof to substantiate the claims in court documents. “I thought Diddy was a billionaire music mogul,” wrote 50 Cent in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “If he’s smart, he will file for bankruptcy now. Anyone with real money knows why I’m saying this. I’m the best producer for the job guys. Here come the receipts.”

After learning that Diddy had stepped down as chairman of Revolt, 50 Cent rushed to X to express his interest in purchasing the network. “I’ll buy that from you, playboy, for the low because you know Cadillac and AT&T gonna pull out,” wrote 50 Cent. “I’ll give you a few dollars for it now! Sell it to me, then we can be friends. I’m serious. Call my phone.”

50 Cent has shown his producing chops with Starz shows such as BMF and the Power Universe franchise. Could a documentary be his next creative venture?

‘The Boys’ Season 4 Trailer Teases Jeffrey Dean Morgan Plus Homelander Going Even More MAGA

The Boys-verse is in the midst of further expansion. Last week Amazon revealed they were launching yet another spin-off of Garth Ennis and Darik Robertson’s renegade superhero comic, with a Mexico-set series involving dynamic duo Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal. But what about the one that started it all? Well, Season 4 is arriving sometime next year, and now it has a new trailer.

There are a couple big additions. One is Jeffrey Dean Morgan, whose character pops up in the trailer’s final moments. There’s also Sister Sage (Susan Heyward), who has the same nihilistic view of America as Trumpy Homelander (Antony Starr).

“Rome. Greece. All democracies fail because people are f*cking stupid,” Sage says. “But if you crush the masses who build your monuments, who tongue your taint… Nah, the people will tear it apart themselves. You just gotta nudge ’em a little. Then you get to swoop in and be the one saving it.”

“Like Caesar?” Homelander replies, to which Sage agrees.

Will Homelander go even more deranged? And will there be still more creative chaos than in Season 3? Given last year’s penis-related mayhem, that’ll be hard to top, though one of the show’s VFX team has already teased that things are getting even wilder.

The Boys Season 4 has yet to name a release date, but it’s slated for sometime next year. In the meantime you can watch the trailer in the video above.

Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave, & Bono Pay Tribute To The Late Shane MacGowan

On November 30, news of Shane MacGowan’s death was made public. The late musician’s wife, Victoria Clarke, shared a note about their life together. Fans flooded social media to show their support of MacGowan and his group, The Pogues. Now, fellow musicians like Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave, and Bono have taken to their platforms to pay tribute.

“Ah, the blessings of the cursed. Shane McGowan’s torrid and mighty voice is mud and roses punched out with swaggering stagger, ancient longing that is blasted all to hell,”wrote Waits in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “A Bard’s bard, may he cast his spell upon us all forevermore.”

Springsteen took to Instagram to share a statement on behalf of himself and The E Street Band. “Over here on E Street, we are heartbroken over the death of Shane MacGowan,” he wrote. “Shane was one of my all-time favorite writers. The passion and deep intensity of his music and lyrics are unmatched by all but the very best in the rock and roll canon. I was fortunate to spend a little time with Shane and his lovely wife, Victoria, the last time we were in Dublin. He was very ill but still beautifully present in his heart and spirit. His music is timeless and eternal. I don’t know about the rest of us, but they’ll be singing Shane’s songs 100 years from now.”

“Shane was not revered just for his manifold talents but also loved for himself alone,” wrote Cave in a newsletter. He continued to honor Sinéad O’Connor, who passed in July. “A beautiful and damaged man, who embodied a kind of purity, innocence, generosity, and spiritual intelligence unlike any other.”

“Shane MacGowan’s songs were perfect, so he or we his fans didn’t have to be,” wrote Bono in an upload on X.
