Despite Streaming On Peacock, ‘Five Night At Freddy’s’ Scared Up A Ton Of Money During Its Opening Weekend

It’s a topsy-turvy time for the movies right now. There are many ways the pandemic has impacted the industry, including shorter dates between when movies open and when movies are available on streamers. Some movies still get released movies online the same day they hit theaters. One of them is the hotly anticipated (though controversially rated) fan item Five Nights at Freddy’s, but if you assumed moviegoers would watch it at home for free, then assume again.

Per Variety, the horror film — about a lowly security guard (Josh Hutcherson) nonplussed to learn the animatronic dolls at a Chuck E. Cheese-esque eatery come to murderous life at night — made a (sorry for this) killing during its opening weekend. Since opening Thursday night, the film (again, sorry) scared up some $78 million domestically. International numbers were strong, too, with $52.8 million, adding up to a whopping $130 million worldwide.

That’s a pretty decent haul, and Variety helpfully laid out the many, many records it broke:

• Highest-grossing opening weekend for Blumhouse, surpassing 2018’s “Halloween” ($76.22 million)
• 19th Blumhouse film to open in first place at the domestic box office
• Biggest opening weekend of the year for a horror film, overtaking “Scream VI” ($44 million)
• Second-largest debut of all time for a video game adaptation, behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($146.3 million)
• Second-best opening weekend for a day-and-date streaming release, following Disney’s 2021 Marvel adventure “Black Widow” ($80 million in theaters and $60 million on Disney+)
• Biggest opening weekend ever for Universal and Peacock’s hybrid releases, beating the slasher sequels, 2021 “Halloween Kills” ($49 million) and 2022’s “Halloween Ends” ($40 million)
• Highest-grossing opening weekend for Halloween weekend release, outperforming 2011’s “Puss in Boots” ($34 million)
• Third-biggest debut for any horror film, trailing 2017’s “It” ($123 million) and 2019’s “It: Chapter Two” ($91 million)
• Best debut for PG-13 horror film, besting 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” ($68 million)

International
• Second-biggest horror opening after “The Nun II” ($52.7 million)

Global
• Biggest horror opening of 2023, ahead of “The Nun II” ($88.1 million)
• Highest-grossing Blumhouse global opening of all time, ahead of “Halloween” ($91.8 million)

Not bad for a movie based on an insanely popular video game series that’s been hooking fans for nearly a decade. But if you’re not the target audience, there’s always a wonderful Scorsese picture you can watch sans intermission.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is now in theaters…and on Peacock.

Here Are The Best Halloween Costumes From Music Artists In 2023

Due to its awkward placement within the week, Halloween 2023 celebrations kicked off early this weekend. Every year, Heidi Klum shuts the internet down with an over-the-top look. However, many of music’s biggest names aren’t far behind. Some of the most searched outfit inspirations this year included Beyoncé, Drake, and Taylor Swift. However, neither of those entertainers has shared their spooky spirits with their followers just yet.

So far, here are the best Halloween costumes from music artists in 2023 in alphabetic order.

Adele

During her latest Las Vegas residency show, Adele completely changed her signature look when she took the stage dressed as the fictional character Morticia Addams.

Halle Bailey & DDG

Halle Bailey and DDG pulled inspiration from another musical pairing for their look. The couple dressed up as Janet Jackson and the late Tupac’s characters in the 1993 film Poetic Justice.

Ice Spice

For Ice Spice, she traded her signature ginger curly afro for a short jet-black cut to embody the animated cartoon character Betty Boop.

Kim Petras

SAG-AFTRA instituted strict rules around members’ Halloween costumes, but those restrictions didn’t apply to Kim Petras. The singer decided to dress as Cherry Darling from the 2007 indie horror flick Planet Terror.

Lizzo

The death of Tina Turner still saddens the world. For Lizzo, she chose to use her spooky night plans to pay tribute to the late singer.

Machine Gun Kelly & Megan Fox

Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox put their love for Manga on full display with two couple costumes. But their Death Note-inspired looks will take your breath away.

Tyga

Tyga is a monster when it comes to the beats he bodies so for his Halloween look, he opted to be as equally terrifying. The rapper went all out for his Art The Clown (from the 2016 slasher film Terrifier) get-up.

We will be updating this list as more celeb costumes continue rolling in.

Some of the artists mentioned are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

A fireman’s children wrote him a hilariously honest obituary he would have loved

After you’re gone, people will probably forget the exact things you said to them while you were alive, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.

Unfortunately, when people write obituaries that sum up a person’s life they’re often just a chronological list of factual details of their lives such as where they lived, where they worked, and how many children they had.

While those facts are important, they don’t really explain the type of person the deceased was or how they made people feel. An obituary for fireman William Ziegler of New Orleans, Louisiana has attracted a lot of attention for how it hilariously summed up the life of a man who was a real raconteur.

Zeigler’s daughter, Sharah Currier, said that he used to read funny obituaries to his children, so they decided to write one that would make him laugh. “He would have loved this,” she told the Times-Picayune. “He probably would have forwarded this obituary to us.”

Zeigler began his career as a volunteer in the U.S. Navy.

William volunteered for service in the United States Navy at the ripe old age of 17 and immediately realized he didn’t much enjoy being bossed around. He only stuck it out for one war. Before his discharge, however, the government exchanged numerous ribbons and medals for various honorable acts. Upon his return to the City of New Orleans in 1971, thinking it best to keep an eye on him, government officials hired William as a fireman.

He then continued his life of service by joining the fire department.

After twenty-five years, he suddenly realized that running away from burning buildings made more sense than running toward them. He promptly retired. Looking back, William stated that there was no better group of morons and mental patients than those he had the privilege of serving with (except Bob, he never liked you, Bob).

Ziegler’s children believe that he’s in heaven with his alcoholic dog.

Following his wishes, there will not be a service, but well-wishers are encouraged to write a note of farewell on a Schaefer Light beer can and drink it in his honor. He was never one for sentiment or religiosity, but he wanted you to know that if he owes you a beer, and if you can find him in Heaven, he will gladly allow you to buy him another. He can likely be found forwarding tasteless internet jokes (check your spam folder, but don’t open these at work). Expect to find an alcoholic dog named Judge passed out at his feet.

His children end the obituary stressing the fact that he’s actually dead.

Unlike previous times, this is not a ploy to avoid creditors or old girlfriends. He assures us that he is gone. He will be greatly missed.

You can read the whole obituary at the Times-Picayune.

Ever wonder why people 100 years ago died so much younger? It’s these 14 reasons.

FACT CHECK TIME! This article originally appeared on 11.21.14 and this infographic is based on data from 2012.

Unfortunately, because of the misinformation from the anti-vaccination movement, some of these diseases have trended up in a really bad way over the past several years.

Wellness involves a lot of personal choices and the tradeoff between personal liberty and shared public good.

Measles is the starkest example. There were about 61 cases of measles in all of 2012, but in just the first seven months of 2014, there have been nearly 600.

As this chart shows, vaccinations are not like taxes rates or even freedom of speech. The impact of one’s personal health choices can have a significant impact on the population around them, in their communities and even on a national level. It makes that trade-off all the more complicated and one not easily distilled into one convenient political or religious ideology.

Obviously, the topic of vaccinations has become immensely more complicated since the onset of COVID-19 in 2020. But history teaches us valuable lessons and information is power. No matter how you feel about vaccines today, this chart is a reminder that medical science can be used for incredible good. Without breakthrough vaccinations in the past, many of us would likely not be here to have the debate about our personal choices now and into the future.

Metro Boomin And Future’s Joint Album Is The Producer’s Top Focus Right Now

Metro Boomin has built up enough demand to keep him booked through the end of 2025. This year alone, the producer has joined forces with some of rap’s biggest names, including Young Thug, Offset, Don Toliver, and ASAP Rocky. He’s even rumored to have collaborated with The Weeknd for his supposed final album, as well as Nicki Minaj for Pink Friday 2. However, according to Metro, his top priority is neither of those rumored pairings.

On Friday, October 27, during an interview with Complex’s Jessica McKinney, Metro revealed that he’s focusing on his joint album with Future. Around the time of his Red Bull Symphonic performance, Metro made it clear that, although he’s grateful for the creative opportunities, he wants to finalize his work with Future before committing to anything else.

“My blinders on tunnel vision,” Metro said. “All I can see right now is me and Future’s album. Nothing else until that’s out. When it’s a [release] date, the world will know.”

When asked what fans should expect from the project, he replied, “It’s the classic Future and Metro, but just updated.”

During a performance in June, Metro teased an unreleased track. When the clip hit social media, people went into a frenzy, demanding that the pair share the entire track to hold them over until the album was complete. While that didn’t happen, maybe the album will hit streaming platforms this year. Meanwhile, Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz’s long-awaited Welcome 2 ColleGrove is slated to drop next month, finally.

Kirk Cousins Hopped Off The Field And Was Carted To The Locker Room With A Non-Contact Right Ankle Injury

The Minnesota Vikings were enjoying a comfortable afternoon at Lambeau Field heading into the fourth quarter, as they led 24-10 as they drove into Packers territory once again to start the final period.

However, on a third down play, starting quarterback Kirk Cousins had to hop off the field on one foot after suffering a non-contact injury dropping back in the pocket, eventually going down for a sack.

Cousins hopped on his left foot to the bench and was clearly in agony, and after going into the medical tent for evaluation, Cousins was carted back to the locker room, per Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

The team immediately ruled him out for the game with what they are officially calling an ankle injury, but there is of course considerable concern it’s something worse given it was a non-contact injury.

While the exact circumstances of how he suffered his injury was different, Aaron Rodgers’ was also initially ruled out with an ankle injury by the Jets on what ended up being an Achilles tear. Vikings fans will be holding their breath until further tests and an MRI get done tomorrow, wondering if their quarterback will be able to return this season or if they’ll be turning to Jaren Hall or someone else via the trade market this week heading into the trade deadline.

The Creators of ‘Friends’ Mourned The Passing Of Matthew Perry: ‘The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken’

Since news of Matthew Perry’s death broke on Saturday, tributes have been pouring in. Those who worked with him remember a kind, loving, and hilarious person who was open about his private struggles with addiction. Those who only knew his work, like Adele, praised his comic chops. The actor had many credits to his name, though he’ll be best known for Friends, on which he played effortlessly sarcastic Chandler Bing. Among those who honored him were the show’s two creators.

“We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing,” David Crane and Martha Kauffman said in a statement. “It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives.”

They went on:

“He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us. We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.”

Crane and Kaufman ended with a bittersweet shout-out to their show’s famous episode titles, writing, “This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”

The Commanders Finally Stopped The Brotherly Shove Forcing A Jalen Hurts Fumble At The Goal Line

One of the leading topics of conversation in the NFL this season has been about the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback sneak, dubbed the Brotherly Shove/Tush Push, and whether the league should do anything about it.

The Eagles, of course, have been wildly successful with the play, running behind their terrific offensive line and taking advantage of Jalen Hurts’ power as a runner. Other teams haven’t had the same level of success with the shove push, and there have been some injuries on the play that figure to get looked at by the NFL. The Eagles and their fans, unsurprisingly, don’t want to see their nearly unstoppable play get outlawed, and have noted that if it were truly unfair then every team would have their same level of success with it and teams should just do a better job against it.

On Sunday, against the Washington Commanders, they finally got taken up on that challenge by the stout Washington defensive front, which stoned the QB sneak at the goal line, resulting in a fumble after Hurts ran the ball into the back of Jason Kelce and dropped it after his momentum was halted.

Part of what makes the play so hard to deal with on the goal line is, even if you stop it once, they’re going to get another crack at it if it’s just held up. However, in this case, Washington’s surge to keep Kelce from moving forward resulted in all kinds of things going wrong on the play for Philly, as the ball popped out as Hurts tried to push forward with it and the Commanders were able to get on it for a rare turnover on the play to briefly preserve a 7-point lead — the Eagles would get a game-tying touchdown via A.J. Brown on their next possession.

Miley Cyrus Still Hasn’t Collaborated With Billie Eilish, But It Is Certainly On The Singer’s Wish List

On Sunday, October 28, during an interview with Mirror, Miley Cyrus shared her admiration for a fellow entertainer, Billie Eilish. It’s not the first time Cyrus has showered the “What Was I Made For” singer with compliments, but she did double down on her hope to collaborate with her in the future.

“I absolutely love Billie Eilish,” said Cyrus. “She’s one of the coolest artists out there at the moment.”

She continued, “What impressed me so much is that she is already an authentic artist. She knows exactly the story she wants to tell and exactly the message she wants to express in her work. I’m in total awe of her. When I was her age, I didn’t know who I was as an artist and was still being heavily influenced by others. But she knows exactly who she is, and it is just so impressive.”

During a sit-down with British Vogue in June 2021, Cyrus first planted the seed. When asked if there was anyone left for her to collaborate with, she said, “There are always new emerging artists that are super interesting. I love Billie Eilish. I think she’s just the coolest. I love her, her messaging. I’d love to work with her.”

Billie Eilish hasn’t responded to the call-out yet.
