Case For, Case Against: Is Taylor Swift The Secret Mastermind Behind A Mysterious New Action Movie?

Let’s start at the beginning, for simplicity’s sake…

There is a movie coming out in February 2024 called Argylle. It is from Kingsmen director Matthew Vaughn and has a truly loaded cast, with everyone from Henry Cavill to Bryce Dallas Howard to Sam Rockwell to Bryan Cranston to Samuel L. Jackson to Dua Lipa involved in some way. It also has a really wild premise, with pulse-pounding spy-type action parroting the events of a series of spy novels written by a character in the movie named Elly Conway.

The official description from the studio might help.

Elly Conway, an introverted spy novelist who seldom leaves her home, is drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate. When Aiden, a spy, shows up to save her (he says) from being kidnapped or killed (or both), Elly and her beloved cat Alfie are plunged into a covert world where nothing, and no one, is what it seems.

The trailer might help, too. Maybe. Possibly. I think you should watch it anyway because it makes the whole thing feel like a cross between a Jason Statham action movie and the movie Spy, which co-starred Jason Statham as a satirical version of the characters he plays in your normal Jason Statham action movie. I’m actually kind of mad he’s not in this movie now. Maybe there’s a twist we don’t know about yet. Fingers crossed.

Anyway, yes, Dua Lipa whispers the phrase “we’re not so different” into Henry Cavill’s ear in this trailer, so I already love it.

But here’s where things get strange. The Elly Conway character in the movie, who writes the Argylle novels that come to life in the film, is also, allegedly, a real person who writes a real book about a secret agent named Argylle. It’s all very twisted and convoluted and it was explained about as well as one can explain it in a recent examination by Vanity Fair. Here’s the most relevant passage.

The funny thing about all this is that there doesn’t seem to be a “real” Elly Conway, either. There are no photos of Conway on the internet, and her author bio on the Penguin Random House website is suspiciously short: “Elly Conway was born and raised in upstate New York. She wrote her first novel about Agent Argylle while working as a waitress in a late-night diner.” Both X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram contain verified profiles under this name that have a smattering of posts, but there is no way of validating who is actually posting from either account.

All of this, as one might suspect, has led to a slew of suspicion and speculation from the type of people who like to build gigantic conspiracy boards in their homes and connect potential clues together with strings of red yarn. And that, also as one might suspect, has led a not-unsubstantial amount of people to wonder if this mysterious and possibly fake author is actually…

… you guessed it…

… world-famous musician Taylor Swift writing under a pseudonym.

And so, what I have done here is attempt to sort through the potential evidence and various ravings to present you with the case for and case against Taylor Swift being the secret mastermind behind Hollywood’s most mysterious new spy movie. There are some strange corners of the internet out there, folks. Bring a hardhat and flashlight.

CASE FOR

CAT
UNIVERSAL

The short version here goes something like this: Ladies and gentlemen, the Swifties are at it again.

The longer version is… uh, more involved and requires a knowledge of Swift/Swiftie history, complete with the thing where Taylor Swift has written under a pseudonym before and how she occasionally drops hints via clue or puzzle and her very devoted fan base pieces them all together with an efficiency that would be the envy of any murder detective. Think of this crew as kind of like Columbo except with yoga pants and a comfy crewneck sweatshirt instead of a trenchcoat.

Thankfully, for me, much of the legwork here was done by Polygon’s Petrana Radulovic, who scoured the Swiftie hangouts to present a list of potential clues and scored them on a scale from 1-10 based on validity. Some of them are as simple as “the cat in this movie is a Scottish Fold and Swift owns two of those and has carried them in a similar backpack” or “Taylor Swift has, on occasion, worn an argyle sweater.”

Some are a little more intense. I recommend clicking through and reading all of these but here are my two favorites.

Birthday stuff:

Conway’s first post was on Swift’s birthday in 2022: This is perhaps the most compelling piece of evidence, because the book and movie were announced a full year and a half prior (in June 2021). No other news surrounding the movie or book was released on Dec. 13, 2022. 9/10

Cat stuff:

Chip the cat (the cat in the movie) made an Instagram post about a big announcement the day before the announcement of the Eras Tour movie: …and it was also the day before the first trailer for Argylle dropped. Considering the cat is owned by the director of the movie, Matthew Vaughn (and his spouse, Claudia Schiffer), that pretty much explains away the coincidence. -1/10

The important things to note here are as follows:

  • None of this is technically impossible
  • I think I would honestly watch a movie about the dedicated fans of a pop star solving a murder by piecing together clues on the internet
  • I did not realize the director of the Kingsmen movies was married to Claudia Schiffer

Really just a lot to process here. Which brings us to…

CASE AGAINST

ARGYLLE
UNIVERSAL

Three things here, all equally important:

  • Taylor Swift is a very busy lady, what with her new movie lighting up the box office and her busy schedule of attending Kansas City Chiefs games, and I just don’t know where she would have found the time to write a spy novel
  • Let’s all take a deep breath here
  • That Vanity Fair article I linked to way back up in the intro also includes this sentence: “Vanity Fair’s sources confirm that Swift is not, in fact, the author of the book”

So… you know. There’s that.

VERDICT

ARGYLLE
UNIVERSAL

Taylor Swift is probably not the secret mastermind behind Argylle, a mysterious new spy movie that stars Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa.

Unless…

unless that’s exactly what they want you to think.

Here’s How To Dress Like Drake For Halloween

We’re a week away from Halloween, and if you’re looking for your last-minute costume ideas, may we humbly suggest a music star?

After all, our favorite singers and rappers are real people with a slew of recognizable looks to choose from that would take only a minimum of effort on the last-minute costume creator’s part.

And look, if we’re already doing music stars, why not one of the biggest music stars of all, Drake? Mr. October’s Very Own has plenty of iconic looks throughout the years, including his recent, colorful looks from the For All The Dogs rollout. So…

Here’s how to dress as Drake for Halloween

(As always, though, and forever — please do not don blackface for any reason. You will look dumb and any future business or political aspirations you may have will die on the spot.)

“Hotline Bling” Drake

This one’s easy. All you’ll need is a neutral-colored turtleneck sweater, a pair of grey sweatpants, and hi-top Timberland boots. For the guys, get a low fade and grow out that beard and for the ladies, there are glue-on beards to fake it. Good luck with that hair though. Maybe a bald cap?

“No New Friends” Drake

This one may admittedly take a bit more work, if only to track down the vintage Dada fit fans couldn’t stop making memes about in 2013. To complete Drake’s throwback ’90s look here, grab some black Doc Martens and calf-length black socks with white stripes, topping it off with a pair of stunna shades.

“Drake As Drake’s Dad” Drake

Simple, yet effective. Although, you might have to take a trip to the hood, sorry. Any beauty supply shop should have the crochet kufi cap you need, then it’s just a matter of throwing on an all-white suit with a chain and fake pair of spectacles (or your real ones for my fellow visually-impaired).

“For All The Dogs” Drake

First, hit either your local swap meet for the throwback FUBU tee or customize yourself a jacket covered in “Vs” (a tribute to the late Virgil Abloh, Louis Vuitton’s former head of menswear), then throw in a cluster of brightly colored barrettes. Voila!

‘Burning Betrayal’ Might Be The Next ‘365 Days’-Style Erotic Thriller On Netflix

After 365 Days broke records on Netflix by surprisingly dominating the viewing charts last summer thanks to its super-horny scenes, the streamer is back with another erotic film that looks poised to hit the same spot. In the new Brazilian film, Burning Betrayal, the sex scenes are reportedly off the chart to the point where they “border on the pornographic” just like 365 Days.

The story centers around Babi (Giovanna Lancellotti) and her new lover Marco (Leandro Limo), and according to Decider, they waste very little time going at it. “The two almost immediately begin having hot sex on the beach, hot sex on a picnic table, hot sex on a kitchen island, hot sex on a chair, hot sex in the shower, and occasionally, hot sex in bed,” Meghan O’Keefe writes.

Of course, it’s too early to tell if Burning Betrayal can seduce viewers like 365 Days, which spent 12 consecutive days as the most-watched film on Netflix despite having a Rotten Tomatoes score of zero percent. Will raunchy sex conquer all again? We’re about to find out.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Sometimes your unconscious desires have a way of pointing you to truths hiding in plain sight. When Babi (Giovanna Lancellotti), a successful accountant, learns that her fiancé’s been cheating on her, she’s furious, devastated, and has no choice but to start over: She gets back on her motorcycle, joins a bike club, and dyes her hair dark. Meanwhile, she crosses paths with Marco (Leandro Limo) — or, as she privately nicknames him, “the hot judge” — and suddenly she’s swept into a torrid affair. But is there more to her new paramour than meets the eye? “He’s obsessed with the truth, but shrouded in mystery,” Babi tells her friends cryptically.

Burning Betrayal is now available for streaming on Netflix.

Here’s Where You Expect ‘Oppenheimer’ To Be Streaming

The Barbenheimer phenomenon was enjoyed by both Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures, albeit as a fan-driven movement, and it likely benefited both films by making this a double-feature that people wanted to experience. The global box-office returns were phenomenal, too, with Greta Gerwig’s pink paradise crossing the $1.4 billion mark and Christopher Nolan’s return to form coming in at $953 million.

Of course, not everyone made it to theater for a double feature or even for their preferred choice, and there’s also plenty of reason to rewatch both of these films. With that said, there’s already an announced date (Nov. 21) to see Cillian Murphy’s eyes carry the weight of the world on VOD (including on Amazon). Where (and when) will the film be available on streaming, though?

Given that Oppenheimer is a Universal film, that’s a sure sign that NBC Universal’s streaming service, Peacock, will be hosting exclusive streaming rights at first. The service is already streaming an Oppenheimer documentary to get things warmed up.

As for the “when,” one can expect at least a slight wait after the VOD date hits. Christopher Nolan previously worked out a deal with Universal Pictures to give the film a 90-day theatrical window, and he was not thrilled with how HBO Max handled the 2021 streaming situation. With that said, it makes sense that Nolan and Universal would also want to give VOD a substantial window, too, but eventually, the streaming day shall come.

Report: James Harden Tried To Join The Sixers Road Trip But Got Stopped By Team Security At The Airport

After missing 10 days to end training camp while tending to a personal matter in Houston, James Harden returned to Philadelphia on Wednesday ahead of the start of the regular season for the 76ers. Later that day, the Sixers were set to fly to Milwaukee for their season opener against Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, and the Bucks on Thursday night.

However, while Harden planned to join the team on their road trip as he ramped back up to eventually playing, the Sixers asked him to stay in Philly and workout in the facility so they could better monitor his condition. Harden did not see that as a demand but a request, and according to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, arrived at the airport ready to fly to Milwaukee only to be stopped by team security who told him he could not get on the plane.

Harden had returned with the intention of re-acclimating himself with the team, knowing assistant coach Rico Hines—his primary workout trainer—would be traveling along with the rest of the supporting staff, sources say.

Initially, staying back was interpreted as a suggestion rather than a mandate, sources say. Harden proceeded to participate in portions of the session with the intention of joining the the team on the flight to Milwaukee that afternoon.

After practice, Harden arrived at the fixed-base operator airport to board the team flight, but he was stopped by a security official who notified him that he was not permitted to accompany the team, sources say.

Afterwards, the team explained why they were keeping him behind, per Haynes, citing the tracking system at the team facility they use to monitor player workouts that they don’t have on the road. Harden, naturally, is apparently skeptical of that excuse, thinking the team is trying to avoid a distraction on their opening road trip where they face a pair of tough East foes in Milwaukee and Toronto. He’s probably not wrong. Even if the Sixers do want some of that tracking data, there’s also the benefit of avoiding at least some of the questions that would persist with Harden seated on the bench for games while not playing.

At some point, the Sixers and Harden will in fact reunite, and it seems this saga may drag on well into the season with the report the Clippers have “paused” their pursuit of the star as they focus on their own start to the year.

Who Was The Mom In ‘Pact Of Silence’ On Netflix?

(Spoilers for Pact Of SIlence will be found below.)

Netflix’s latest telenovela Pact of Silence is filled with so many twists and turns across its 18-episode run, that fans have taken to social media, begging to know the identity of a main player in the show before they even finish it.

A surprise hit for the streamer, Pact of Silence follows the story of a young woman named Brenda Rey who was abandoned at birth and lived a troubled life before becoming a successful influencer with over 10 million followers — and all of the power that comes with that kind of audience. Unsatisfied with her fame and wealth, Brenda decides to use her resources to finally track down her birth mom. The problem? That title could belong to one of four women, who helped to get rid of Brenda when they were teenagers at a private boarding school.

The show drags out the reveal of which member of this group of friends is Brenda’s biological mom. Is it the rich housewife, Fernanda Alarcón? The greed-driven realtor, Martina Robles? The off-the-grid writer, Sofía Estrada? Or the cutthroat congresswoman, Irene Bustamante? It takes most of the season for the show to decide, but if slogging through 18 episodes of wild melodrama just isn’t your thing, we can spoil the surprise for you.

Who Is Brenda Rey’s Mom?

In the final episodes, the show reveals that Irene Bustamante, the politician in a complicated relationship with a controlling husband and psychopathic stepson, is actually Brenda’s mom. Irene hid the pregnancy as a teen, afraid of the repercussions for her future. Eventually, Irene admits the truth to Brenda, who’s been unknowingly having a relationship with her mother’s stepson, Adriano. Mentally unstable and obsessed with Brenda at this point, Adriano takes her hostage, forcing Irene to make a devastating sacrifice that, in some ways, atones for her earlier sins when it comes to Brenda’s childhood. Of course, there are plenty more revealed secrets and betrayals that lead up to the show’s climax — and they’re worth watching — but perhaps knowing the identity of Brenda’s mom going in will keep your binge-watch from becoming as frustrating as these peoples’ experiences.

Does Jay-Z Have A New Album Coming?

The first part of Jay-Z’s CBS Mornings interview officially arrived this morning, October 26. The nearly 13-minute clip captured Jay-Z giving Gayle King a tour of his Book Of HOV exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library. He reflected on his past albums, including Reasonable Doubt, In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, and Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life. It’s already been six-plus years since Jay’s most recent album, 4:44, arrived and became his 14th consecutive No. 1 on the Billboard 200, so King had to ask if Jay-Z has plans for a new album anytime soon — or at all.

“We can’t use the word ‘retirement’ for you,” King said in a separate clip posed to CBS Mornings‘ Instagram account, to which Jay-Z joked, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, nah, I already did that. I can’t do that ever again.”

Then, he answered the question: “I’ll say, I want to make music again, but it has to be something important. I don’t want to just make a bunch of tunes. That’s not gonna serve me. It won’t feed me, first of all.” King asked what Jay-Z does feel feeds him, and he responded, “I have to be saying something important. It has to mean something. It has to mean something to a larger society. Like, 4:44, for example. It was a personal story, but the amount of vulnerability in there allowed for a lot of people to explore the space.”

Watch Part 1 of Jay-Z’s CBS Mornings special above, and watch the clip about new music below.

Jack Black Stripped Down And Channeled His Inner ‘Anti-Hero’ For An Impromptu Taylor Swift Cover At A Fundraiser

Jack Black held his The Give Back-ular Spectacular event in Los Angeles last night (October 25), where he surprised the audience with a routine while on-stage at The Orpheum Theater. During it, Black decided to perform a striptease set to none other than… Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero.”

In a video from the event, Black takes off his shirt, wearing just some boxers, as the audience cheers after the move. He then walks down to an audience member to ask where they’re from, getting just “Los Angeles” as a hilarious response.

Black walks back up to the stage, asking the rest of the crowd for song requests. He denies one because of the Screen Actors Guild strike, but someone must’ve thrown out Swift’s song as an idea.

“Typically, you don’t have to film it on your phone,” Black joked.

“I know that one!” he responded. “Everyone knows that f*cking song.” Black proceeded to sing the “Anti-Hero” chorus, getting the “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me” lyric right, as he leaps around the stage.

In Jack Black fashion, he then makes some creative choices, putting on his classic comedic voice where all you can hear is “I’m tired of feeling like” before he keeps ad-libbing. He was also raising money for an emergency relief fund that helps both union and non-union crew members in Hollywood.

Check out a clip from the moment below.

Jay-Z Won’t Be Selling His Masters Anytime Soon, Despite The Current Trend

In the past few years, a growing number of artists have begun selling their catalogs and master recordings for massive sums. The list of acts who’ve joined this trend includes Future, Iggy Azalea, John Legend, Metro Boomin, and more. There are a lot of reasons that artists have been doing this but there’s one artist who has a pretty good reason for not selling his: Jay-Z.

In his CBS Mornings interview with Gayle King, Jay explained why he won’t be selling his master recordings anytime soon. At the 7:11 mark in the video below, Jay says, “I get why people do it. I’ve been fortunate to make money in this place. But for me, it was the fight of my life. From being an independent company from the beginning, and then going through the Def Jam system, not really understanding how that works and them having my masters, then going back to Def Jam as the President, and then saying, ‘Okay, I’ll do this job, and part of this job is: my masters have to revert back to me.’”

He does offer one condition under which a lucky investor could buy one of the most lucrative catalogs in music: His kids would have to want to sell it.

Jay-Z was named President of Def Jam Recordings in 2004, selling his remaining interest in Roc-A-Fella Records along with the label’s co-founders Dame Dash and Kareem Burke in exchange for taking control of both companies. Jay remained President of Def Jam until 2007, resigning on January 1, 2008. He started Roc Nation in 2009; since then, his business empire has grown expeditiously, expanding into a number of ventures that have made him hip-hop’s first official billionaire.

Elsewhere in his Gayle King interview, Jay addressed memes about his awkward dancing and whether fans should take dinner with him or $500,000.
