Fans Are Convinced Cardi B Dissed Ice Spice At Hot 97 Summer Jam But Cardi Thinks They’re Being ‘Messy’

Here we go again. Cardi B has spoken before about how much she dislikes being pitted against “every new female rapper” but that won’t stop fans from looking for signs of friction every chance they get. The latest opportunity came with Cardi’s set at Hot 97 Summer Jam this weekend, where one of Cardi’s background graphics caught fans’ attention and has them thinking that Cardi’s latest target is “Boy’s A Liar” rapper Ice Spice.

During Cardi’s set, she set up her performance of “Tomorrow 2” with a clip from Annie while an illustrated caricature of the red-headed orphan appeared on the screen behind her. Fans seeing this image online decided that this was somehow a reference to Ice Spice because the rapper’s look — which usually consists of bright orange curls styled into an afro — has become so iconic in such a short amount of time. This led to an avalanche of tweets accusing Cardi of spoofing Ice Spice’s look — although, inarguably, Annie did it first.

Of course, it should be noted that the fans driving this particular narrative seemingly all come from a specific fan base (rhymes with “carbs”), while others — including, apparently, the person who created the graphic in the first place, called it out as ridiculous. A video of Cardi defending Ice Spice recently also surfaced as evidence she wouldn’t feel the need to shade the new rap it-girl, even though she recently collaborated with Cardi’s ostensible rival.

Incidentally, Cardi’s verse on “Tomorrow 2” contains a nod to Ice Spice’s breakout hit “Munch,” which Cardi also considered remixing, although she decided later not to put the song out. But Cardi herself went on Instagram Live shortly after her performance to lay the speculation to rest. “Cut the bullsh*t, please,” she said. “Get the mop. Y’all being too messy and y’all being annoying.”

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw an emotional comeback for Foo Fighters and two of the biggest pop icons of their respective generations meet up. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape and Pop Life newsletters.

Foo Fighters — “The Teacher”

Foo Fighters have been through a lot over the past year-plus following the death of Taylor Hawkins, but they’ve charged back with their new album, But Here We Are. “The Teacher” is a particularly vulnerable track, a mournful tune that ends with Dave Grohl repeatedly roaring, “Goodbye.”

Latto — “Put It On Da Floor Again” Feat. Cardi B

It’s been over five years since Cardi B’s first and only album, 2018’s Invasion Of Privacy. She’s kept plenty busy since then, though, including with features like on Latto’s “Put It On Da Floor” remix. Cardi made sure to shout out LSU on her new verse, and the university in turn made sure to extend an invite to the rapper.

The Weeknd, Madonna, and Playboi Carti — “Popular”

The Weeknd’s controversial HBO series The Idol isn’t performing well on Rotten Tomatoes, but at least there’s new music, like last week’s “Popular” from The Weeknd, Madonna, and Playboi Carti. There’s good news if you like this: If The Weeknd gets his way, there will be a whole collaborative album with him and Madonna.

Kid Cudi — “Porsche Topless”

Cudi takes fan feedback seriously: He teased a single, fans were vocal about how little they liked it, so Cudi pivoted and dropped a different new song instead. The single he actually released is “Porsche Topless,” an upbeat tune on which Cudi is vocal about how grateful he is for all his blessings.

Ed Sheeran — “A Beautiful Game”

What may have been the final episode of Ted Lasso (although it seems like nobody’s really too sure about that) featured some Ed Sheeran. He wrote a new song for the show, “A Beautiful Game,” which touches on the show’s recurring themes of teamwork and positivity.

Dominic Fike — “Mona Lisa”

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is fantastic, and so too is the roster of talent that Metro Boomin brought together for the soundtrack. On the deluxe version, Dominic Fike offers “Mona Lisa,” a smooth tune that starts acoustic before settling into a head-nodding groove.

Karol G — “Watati” Feat. Aldo Ranks

Speaking of big-time movie soundtracks, Barbie is equally star-studded. While the full OST isn’t out until July, Karol G and Aldo Ranks’ “Watati” is here now and it’s a lively reggaeton tune that somehow brings even more color to an already-vibrant Barbie universe.

Burna Boy — “Sittin’ On Top Of The World”

Burna Boy is clearly a Brandy fan, as he sampled her and Mase’s 1998 collaboration “Top Of The World” on his latest, “Sittin’ On Top Of The World.” Naturally, the song has a bit of a throwback vibe, but Burna did a good job at modernizing it for his self-laudatory new track.

Toosii and Future — “Favorite Song Toxic Version”

Earlier this year, Toosii dropped “Favorite Song,” the biggest hit of his career: It’s his first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (at No. 5, no less). To celebrate, he delivered a new “toxic” version of the track featuring Future, who stays true to the updated moniker by reflecting on a toxic relationship in his verse.

Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar — “The Hillbillies”

Bon Iver has a rich history of hip-hop collaborations (well, pretty much just some songs with Kanye West). Anyway, now there’s some newness on that front, as Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar sampled his “PDLIF” on their latest, “The Hillbillies,” a rapid-fire and relentless track that gets an atmospheric boost from the sample.

Taylor Swift Accidentally Entered Her Bug-Swallowing Era During Her ‘The Eras Tour’ Chicago Finale

Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour has been the hottest ticket in North America since opening at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on March 17. One Swiftie became a security guard with the sole goal of attending an Eras show. Tens of thousands of Swifties waited out a four-hour rain delay to see her perform in the pouring rain in Nashville, and countless more without tickets have set up shop outside each venue, a trend that continued in Chicago over the weekend (as noted by NBC News).

The latter group of Swifties are likely jealous of an unassuming bug this morning, June 5.

Swift’s third and final Eras concert at Chicago’s Soldier Field was Sunday night, June 4, and interrupted by Swift unwillingly swallowing a bug.

“I just swallowed a bug,” Swift told her adoring crowd, covering her mouth and turning away. “It’s totally fine. It’s just stupid. Oh, delicious. Ugh. Oh, god. Is there any chance that none of you saw that?”

She then entered a brief coughing fit before continuing, “It’s fine. I swallowed it. So, I’m just gonna try not to do as many of those. This is gonna happen again tonight. There’s so many bugs. There’s 1,000 of ’em.”

The unscripted moment was captured by various fans in attendance and predictably spread across social media.

And other Swifties used it to get jokes off about feeling envious of a bug:

According to Billboard, Swift’s understandable inability to tolerate a bug in her throat happened as she was preparing to perform “Tolerate It.” She’s a mastermind.

Jessica Chastain Got ‘Quite A Lot Of Flak’ For Wearing A Mask At The Oscars

The 95th Academy Awards was held on on March 12, 2023. That week, nearly 2,000 people died from COVID-19 in the United States, a steep drop from the peak of pandemic, but 2,000 people is still 2,000 people.

Can you blame Jessica Chastain for wearing a mask to the Oscars?

It turns out, the worst people in the world can. “I was wearing the mask at the Oscars. I got quite a lot of flak for that. A lot of people thought I was making some political statement. I don’t know what they thought,” Chastain told the Hollywood Reporter. The Oscar winner was in a production of the Henrik Ibsen play A Doll’s House at the time, and she felt it would have been “irresponsible” for her, and rude to her castmates, to get sick and be out for a week.

“I’ll tell you,” she continued, “the best thing is someone at the stage door gave me a mask that said, ‘I’m On Broadway.’ But yeah, the SAG Awards, the Oscars, a lot of people were like, ‘What are you doing?!’ I just couldn’t get sick. And I didn’t. I haven’t missed a show.”

If only the CDC could have bottled the heat from this video of Chastain and Oscar Isaac and used it to wipe out COVID-19.

The Clock Struck ‘Midnights’ On Morgan Wallen’s 12-Week Chart Run As Taylor Swift Knocked Him Off The No. 1 Spot

Taylor Swift comes back stronger than a ’90s trend. Her Midnights album from last October debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with what was the biggest first week for any album since 2015 at the time. Morgan Wallen’s One Thing At A Time has mirrored that record-breaking success by spending its first 12 weeks at No. 1, but Swift gets the last laugh — at least for this week.

Per Billboard, Midnights reclaimed the chart’s top spot (its sixth nonconsecutive No. 1 week) following Swift’s May 26 release of Midnights (Til Dawn Edition) housing a “Karma” remix with Ice Spice.

The publication contextualized the chart movement:

Midnights earned 282,000 equivalent album units in the United States in the week ending June 1 (up 389%), according to Luminate — the second-largest week of 2023 for any album. Only the debut frame of Morgan Wallen’s One Thing At A Time posted a bigger week this year, when it launched at No. 1 with 501,000 (chart dated March 18).

Midnights debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated Nov. 5, 2022, and spent its first two weeks at No. 1. It then notched three further weeks at No. 1 on the charts dated Nov. 26-Dec. 10, 2022. The album has never left the top 10 in its 32 weeks on the chart.”

Swift is primed to notch another No. 1 album next month, as her Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is due out on July 7. Generally speaking, Swift and Wallen are on divergent paths entering the summer. Swift is thriving on her The Eras Tour, which will next hit Detroit, Michigan next weekend. Swift recently added dates in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico for later this year, bringing Sabrina Carpenter along as her opener. Meanwhile, Wallen is currently on vocal rest.

This week’s Billboard 200 also features Lil Durk’s Almost Healed debuting at No. 3, SZA’s former No. 1 album SOS at No. 4, Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album at No. 5, and Swift’s Lover at No. 6.
