Why Did Kendall Break Roman’s Stitches In The ‘Succession’ Finale?

The Succession finale came to a brutal end as the Roy siblings proved their late father right by detonating their chance to take control of the Waystar Royco empire. For a brief moment, it seemed like all three had coalesced around Kendall (Jeremy Strong) to take over the company, but the dysfunction from growing up under the thumb of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) couldn’t be contained.

During a pivotal scene before the board vote that could stop Lukas Matsson’s acquisition and anoint Kendall as the new CEO of Waystar Royco, Roman (Kieran Culkin) starts to have a breakdown over the fact it could’ve never been him in the top spot. However, when Kendall goes to comfort his brother, the hug turns disturbingly violent as Kendall seemingly jams Roman’s wounded face into his shoulder, reopening the stitches from his assault in the penultimate episode.

“Part of the tragedy of the show, part of what Jesse is writing about, is this co-mingling of holding and hurting–of love and violence,” Strong explained to Vanity Fair about the brotherly moment:

When I hold Roman, that embrace is also–what’s the opposite of an embrace?

You’re crushing him.

Yeah, I’m embracing him and I’m crushing him at the same time. Which you could say is part of the love language that they learned in this family. Shiv and Roman can’t express love without also expressing a kind of cruelty, and we–all of us–betray our own capacity to love.

Unfortunately, the “embrace” wouldn’t be Kendall’s only act of violence. After Shiv (Sarah Snook) torpedoes Kendall’s chances of being CEO, the three siblings get into a tense, and highly visible, screaming match that ultimately ends after Kendall attacks both Roman and his pregnant sister before returning to the conference room to learn that his entire world just ended. An “extinction level” event, as Strong calls it.

When Will The New ‘The Little Mermaid’ Be On Streaming?

The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid swam into theaters over the weekend and subsequently shipwrecked the competition by making waves of money at the box office. Most of the movie takes place underwater, in case that was not clear. But if you have a fear of drowning and/or aquatic life, maybe seeing the movie on the big screen isn’t for you!

The live-action rendition stars Halle Bailey, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy, and features a handful of new original songs. While The Little Mermaid is only available in theaters at the moment, it will be making its way onto Disney+ sometime this summer. New movies typically wind up on the streamer roughly 90 days after release, meaning the movie will likely be on Disney+ sometime in August.

Most movies premiere on the streamer on Wednesdays, so it seems like The Little Mermaid could have an August 30th release, though that could change depending on box office success.

Even though you can’t stream it quite yet, there is still a lot of mermaid content to prepare you for your at-home sing-along party once the movie arrives on streaming. The original animated version of The Little Mermaid is currently streaming, along with its prequel, Ariel’s animated TV series, and the live-action stage production from 2019. This way, you’ll be able to perfect all of the songs so that when you get to hear Halle Bailey’s rendition, you will learn just how much of a bad singer you are. It’s okay to leave it to the professionals.

All The Best New Pop Music From This Week

Summer is gearing up in full force, as May is now coming to a close. This week, lots of major pop superstars returned with killer new music to carry us all through the heat and onto a dancefloor, including one that appears on the soundtrack for this year’s hottest upcoming movie. Basically, this week is just full of fun releases that are all a genuinely good time… with a little bit of heartbreak sprinkled in.

Check out Uproxx’s Best New Pop roundup below.

Taylor Swift — “Hits Different”

After months of fans finding methods to listen to Taylor Swift’s “Hits Different,” a hidden bonus track from Midnights, she has finally given it an official streaming release with the album’s new Til The Dawn edition — which also includes the Ice Spice collab and more Lana Del Rey. This has become one of my all-time favorite songs from her, primarily because of how great the bridge (and entire song) is.

“I pictured you in love with other girls / Then threw up on the street,” needs to be hilariously screamed in a stadium. It’s also an emotional tale of her grappling with a relationship breakdown, as it takes on the form of drunk venting to a friend — in this case, she “stopped receiving invitations” and dubs herself the “argumentative, antithetical dream girl.”

Dua Lipa — “Dance The Night”

When Dua Lipa was revealed as part of the upcoming Barbie movie cast, it was also teased that she’d be delivering on the soundtrack too. “Dance The Night,” the first glimpse of the star-studded album, finds Lipa shining where she’s best: on a glamorous, disco-inspired danceable anthem. The music video is equally barbie-fied, with pink colors popping throughout and Lipa wearing her best sparkly outfit.

Beyoncé — “America Has A Problem (Remix)” (feat. Kendrick Lamar)

Beyoncé is currently continuing her Renaissance tour across Europe, but that hasn’t stopped her from sprinkling in surprises for fans. Her remix of “America Has A Problem” found the star once again working with Kendrick Lamar, where they take turns delivering some seriously sick new verses. During Lamar’s turn, he also hilariously is sure to note that he’s part of the Beyhive — which is the pop star’s fandom.

“I’m an honorary Beyhive, let’s see why / Them diamonds don’t be fly, they all CGI,” he raps. Later in the remix, Beyoncé launches into the song’s catchy “Tony Montana” part that’s present in the original.

Lauren Spencer Smith — “That Part”

“That Part” is a new single from Lauren Spencer-Smith’s album, Mirror. In it, she speaks to the positive aspects of a relationship. One that is in fact going so well, that she just wants to jump to a longer-term commitment.

Maisie Peters — “Two Weeks Ago”

Maisie Peters had been teasing just how heartbreaking her next single from her forthcoming The Good Witch album, “Two Weeks Ago,” would be — and she was right. In it, she details how differently a connection has changed in just a short time frame, going from someone you were close with to a complete stranger with past memories. “You were driving fast, I was holding back,” she regretfully expresses. “And I loved you babe, but I bet you knew that / The song was true and the sky was black.”

Enhyphen — “Bite Me”

The K-Pop band Enhyphen dropped their new song, “Bite Me,” from their mini album, Dark Blood. Keeping with the vibes of the title, the band notes in the song that “it’s you and me in this world,” along with some killer choreography for the fiery track.

Lauren Jauregui — “Wolves” (feat. Russ and Ty Dolla $ign)

While Jauregui‘s new “Wolves” collab appears on her latest album, In Between, it was actually recorded about five years ago — when she was still dating Ty. “Thank you for being such amazing friends and believing in me & this project enough to be a part of it,” she wrote on Instagram about each artist’s willingness to trust the release of their past vision.

Emei — “Irresponsible”

“Left my head back in the diner / Think my keys are right beside it / Let me know if you can find them / Cuz they’re designer,” Emei drives home the point on “Irresponsible,” where she dives into the carefree and reckless nature of just being young.

Hailey Kiyoko — “Greenlight”

On the heels of Hailey Kiyoko’s album last year, she has returned with a signal toward a possible new era with the latest song, “Greenlight.” As some in the comments have noted, it has song of the summer potential, with its fun, fast-paced nature, and dreamy instrumental breaks.

Cat Burns — “You Don’t Love Me Anymore”

“It’s so delicately written and it gently speaks about a fear loads of us have in relationships where we’re worried our partner may wake up one day and no longer love us, I truly hope this song brings comfort to anyone going through this exact thing right now,” Burns said of “You Don’t Love Me Anymore” in an Instagram post. Her beautiful vocals find her somberly reflecting on the love lost.

Here Are The Primavera Sound Barcelona Set Times For 2023

With Primavera Sound returning to Barcelona this weekend, the festival has announced the set times for headliners Blur, Halsey, Kendrick Lamar, and the rest of its genre-spanning, absolutely massive lineup. Taking over Barcelona’s Ciudad de Rock from June 1 to 3, the festival also features big names like Baby Keem, Bleachers, Christine And The Queens, hometown heroine Rosalía, St. Vincent, and The War On Drugs. You can see the full set times list on Primavera Sound’s website.

If you can’t make it to Spain to check out the festival live, you can stream some of the performances on Amazon Prime. Sets that were previously announced include Alex G, Arlo Parks, Beak >, Black Country, New Road, Blur, Christine And The Queens, Depeche Mode, Julia Jacklin, Los Hacheros, Maneskin, Mora, My Morning Jacket, New Order, Perfume, Sparks, St. Vincent, Surf Curse, The Comet Is Coming, The Moldy Peaches, The Voidz, The War On Drugs, and Turnstile.

The Primavera Sound brand has been expanding in recent years, with events in Los Angeles and São Paulo last year, remaining committed to providing a diverse experience. In the lineup announcement, the festival’s organizers wrote, “Look for yourself in the Primavera Sound 2023 line-up… and find yourself. Because we assure you that you are there. After twenty editions, the festival is the mirror in which the community that will come from near and far to Barcelona and for the first time to Madrid next June looks at itself and recognizes itself, but after everything it has experienced, this reflection goes in two directions, marking the richest musical itinerary we can think of: Primavera Sound also looks for and finds itself in its own audience.”

HBO’s ‘The Idol’ Has Another New Trailer With Even More Wild Scenes Featuring The Weeknd And Lily-Rose Depp

While Succession has come to a final series close, HBO is starting a new one up to replace the Sunday night slot with the controversial series, The Idol. Ahead of the show’s June 4 premiere on the streaming service, there is also a new trailer to (hopefully) build some hype for it.

The show features Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp playing a boyfriend and a fictional pop star named Jocelyn.

“You’re the American dream,” Tesfaye says in the clip. “Rags to riches. Trailers to mansions. You are f*cking Jocelyn. Just be you.”

“Easy,” she responds. “I’ll just do that.”

The latest teaser then features scenes of her being critiqued about the backup dancers, recording in the studio, and hinting at some of the wild explicit scenes with Tesfaye. Just a few months ago, a Rolling Stone article alleged that the showrunner, Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson, had created some rough working conditions.

Then, after The Idol held its official premiere, it debuted with a 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes that later fell to the single digits. It now sits at 27%, but still. Variety also described it as a show that “seems calculated to fool audiences into thinking they’re observing how Hollywood operates, when so much of it amounts to tawdry clichés lifted from Sidney Sheldon novels and softcore porn.”

Check out the new trailer for HBO’s The Idol above.

Will Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Be At Dodger Stadium In 2023?

Festival season is not complete without Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw. Although the festival did not go down last year due to the “See You Again” rapper’s hectic tour schedule, during his special cameo in Keem and Kendrick Lamar’s new video for their single, “The Hillbillies,” Tyler gleefully showed off a Camp Flog Gnaw 2023 pin button.

Filmed in front of the event’s former stomping grounds, Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, California fans believe this year’s festivities will take place at the venue. Unfortunately, at this time, the festival’s website remains blank and Tyler has yet to share any further information regarding the event.

However, considering Tyler’s manager Chris Clancy’s comments to Billboard last year, an announcement is undoubtedly on the way. After confirming Camp Flog Gnaw 2022 was canceled, Clancy said, “It’s really not that deep. Tyler toured all year and was busy with a number of projects. Reading the tea leaves and what’s happening with festivals coming out of the pandemic, we thought it would be best to come back next year.”

In past years, the festival featured performances from Drake (although the campers weren’t too happy about it), Solange, Brockhampton, YG, Pusha T, Asap Rocky, and many more.

Are Megan Thee Stallion & Romelu Lukaku Dating?

Fans can’t help but wonder if Megan Thee Stallion and soccer star Romelo Lukaku have begun dating after they were seen together at the wedding of one of his teammates. Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez got married in Italy on Monday, and in some videos from the festivities, it appeared the “Savage” rapper might be getting cozy with the Belgian footballer, with whom she was seen talking near Lake Como and sitting aside at a table.

Rumors had been swirling for months that Meg had broken up with her previous beau, fellow rapper Pardison Fontaine. While the couple had shared a Valentine’s Day photo on Instagram, they also both appeared to have unfollowed each other on Instagram. Seeing the videos of Megan and Lukaku at Martinez’s nuptials has fans wondering whether those rumors might be true and thinking Thee Stallion has moved on to a greener pitch.

“If they’re together, this might be the best goal Lukaku has ever scored in his career,” wrote one fan.

Another directed their condolences to Pardison Fontaine. “Welp. @pardi , you had a good run my boy,” they commiserated.

Others still encouraged their peers to either “be happy for her” or let Meg be “left alone,” as she should be allowed to have agency over her own love life.

Meanwhile, until either of them actually confirms a relationship, as always, it remains best to let rumors be rumors.
