The last thing the world needs is another movie about Boston — unless it’s a movie about Boston starring Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon. Boston Strangler is a thriller about the reporters who broke the story of the notorious Boston Strangler murders of the 1960s. Knightley plays Boston Record American journalist Loretta McLaughlin, while Coon portrays Jean Cole. “Despite initial ridicule and derision from police investigators,” Cole’s obituary reads, “she and her colleague continued writing articles to alert women to the risks they faced. Eventually, their early intuitions were discovered to be facts.”

The film follows Loretta McLaughlin (Keira Knightley), a reporter for the Record-American newspaper, who becomes the first journalist to connect the Boston Strangler murders. As the mysterious killer claims more and more victims, Loretta attempts to continue her investigation alongside colleague and confidante Jean Cole (Carrie Coon), yet the duo finds themselves stymied by the rampant sexism of the era. Nevertheless, McLaughlin and Cole bravely pursue the story at great personal risk, putting their own lives on the line in their quest to uncover the truth.

Boston Strangler, which also stars Bill Camp, Alessandro Nivola, David Dastmalchian, and Chris Cooper, comes to Hulu on March 17.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Tampa, Florida, released a harrowing video on February 15 of a woman fending off a sexual assault. But even though the video is distressing to watch, it comes with an encouraging message for women everywhere: “Keep fighting.”

The video of Alma’s escape went viral on Twitter, where it’s been played over 5 million times.

On January 22, 2023, Nashali Alma, 24, was working out alone in the gym at her apartment complex when she saw a man standing outside the front door. She let the man in and resumed her workout, but after a few minutes, he approached her menacingly.

“As soon as he was approaching me, I pushed him. I said, ‘Bro, what the F are you doing? Get away from me, stop trying to touch me,’” Alma said in the video. “He started chasing me around the bench, and we ended up on the other side of the gym.”

A fight ensued, and the alleged attacker, Xavier Thomas-Jones, 25, eventually got Alma on the ground, but she wouldn’t stop fighting him back. She used all four limbs to kick, grab and punch Thomas-Jones until he finally relented. Then, she ran out of the gym to a nearby apartment and called 911.

Within 24 hours, Thomas-Jones was apprehended by law enforcement and now faces charges of sexual battery, false imprisonment and kidnapping.

“I was disgusted by the suspect’s actions, how he preyed on this young woman,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a press release. “This woman’s strength, courage, and determination are inspiring. I know that her bravery to share this story will impact the lives of many other women.”

Yes, he has been arrested.

Alma attributes the escape to her tenacity and urges women everywhere to do the same if they are in a similar position.

“I would tell every woman always to keep fighting, never give up,” Alma said. “As long as you fight back and show him that you’re strong and you’re not giving up, I believe it’s possible to escape.”

“It’s better to reach out to law enforcement sooner than later,” she continued. “The sooner they have the information, the sooner they can catch that person.”

According to the Joplin Police Department in Montana, Alma did the right thing. The department says that if you are attacked by a rapist and decide to fight back, you must be “quick and effective” and “target the eyes or groin.” It’s also important to “make noise to discourage your attacker” and to try to “escape, scream, and be rude.”

It’s a sad state of affairs that women have to give each other words of encouragement to help them survive a potential sexual assault. But it’s important for women like Alma to share their stories to help others who may find themselves in the same position. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office should also be commended for sharing the video, so people know how to thwart a potential attacker and for starting a conversation about women’s safety.

Hollywood isn’t exactly known for cultivating lasting relationships, but some couples have managed to defy the statistics with their happy, mutually supportive, long-term marriages.

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick are a prime example, and a video of them casually singing together is a delightful reminder that love can last.

The two actors met briefly when Sedgwick was 12 and Bacon was 19, but they didn’t really get to know one another until a decade later while filming the movie “Lemon Sky” in 1987. Bacon fell for Sedgwick right away, but Sedgwick wasn’t impressed by him at all at first. She quickly had a change of heart, however, and the two were married in September of 1988. They started their family right away, and nearly 35 years later, they are still going strong.

“I had no great role models in terms of healthy marriages, but I knew in my heart and soul that he was the right person,” Sedgwick told Good Housekeeping in 2010. “It was an unquestionable truth of mine. I’ve never had anything like that before or after.”

One “secret” to their long-lasting marriage is that they keep it simple.

“We like each other’s company,” Bacon told Serendipity in 2015. “We enjoy doing things together, sharing our lives, cooking, laughing—and she’s hot.”

“People say it’s this fairytale thing, but it’s life. We just love each other a lot,” Sedgwick told Redbook in 2012, “When we’re on the red carpet and we get the ‘How do you guys do it? No one can stay together,’ I get irritated. I don’t think our relationship is more or less difficult; I just think you both make the commitment and you make it work.”

They also say they just got lucky in their relationship, and that with the exception of a few bumps in the road, it hasn’t been hard.

Their ease and comfort with one another are evident in a video Bacon shared on Instagram, in which the couple sings Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ together. Bacon, who often shares his music on social media, plays the guitar and Sedgwick plays…a screaming goat?

There is actually a good explanation for this. Bacon and Sedgwick live on a farm and Bacon often films himself singing out in the yard with the goats.

“We’re not with the goats, but we thought we’d try a goat song anyway,” Sedgwick explains at the opening of the video. It’s really a must-see—for the love, for the silliness and because Bacon really does have a cool singing voice.

Here’s to good partnerships, lucky couples, happy marriages…and the neverending joy of screaming goats.

Selena Gomez has talked openly about her diagnosis of lupus for several years now. We’ve seen her take breaks from music and acting because of it, and she’s even gotten a kidney transplant from the organ damage the autoimmune disorder caused. With all of the changes Gomez has gone through, she continues to push forward and attend celebrity events when she is able.

But once again, the focus of her latest red carpet walk at the Golden Globe Awards was her body. Not because she looked stunning in her gown—which she did. No, it was because she gained a few pounds. Gomez has been in the spotlight since she was a child on “Barney & Friends,” then later on “Wizards of Waverly Place.” She’s 30 years old now, and that alone should be reason enough for people to expect her to have more curves.

Since Gomez has spoken publicly about her lupus and bipolar disorder, it seems like people would be kinder and expect that her medications may cause weight fluctuations. Instead, people wrote articles about the state of her body and folks on the internet decided to leave comments about it. This led to the singer addressing the body shaming in an emotional TikTok live.

In the live video, she explained what happens when she takes her medication. “[When I’m taking it, I] tend to hold a lot of water weight, and that happens very normally. When I’m off of it, I tend to lose weight.” During the video, Gomez got emotional, saying, “My medications are important and I believe they are what helps me. Not a model, never will be. And I think they’re awesome, mind you. I’m just definitely not that.”

It’s a wild thing to watch unfold. This isn’t the first time Gomez has had to come out and talk about her weight gain. It just makes you wonder why we are still commenting on people’s bodies. Unless you’re a person’s medical provider and they’ve come to you asking why they’ve gained weight or how to lose it, then maybe we should collectively keep those thoughts inside the thought box.

So many people experience different things in life, and some of them cause our bodies to look different than what others may be used to. But commenting on what has changed about someone’s body can cause harm that exceeds hurt feelings.

Studies show that body shaming can cause depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, eating disorders and more weight gain. Having someone give unsolicited commentary on your body just doesn’t feel good, and celebrities are getting that experience times millions.

Fans of the actor have come to her defense on social media. One of them took to Twitter, writing, “The fact that selena felt like she had to go on a live and explain that when she takes medical for her illness she gains weight after being bodyshamed [sic] and asked why she looks different… like i feel so bad for her she looked so upset.”

“I just want people to know that you’re beautiful, and you’re wonderful,” Gomez said. “Yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like s—, but I would rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me.”

Gomez ended the live thanking her fans for their support and telling the haters to go away, saying, “I’m perfect the way I am.”

Jason Isbell’s run for political office is going to have to wait just a bit longer for a good reason. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit will be pretty preoccupied as they prepare to drop their eighth studio album, Weathervanes, this coming June. To give fans a taste of what’s to come, the rockers released the 12-track project’s lead single, “Death Wish,” to streaming platforms along with a lyric video to their official YouTube channel.

In a statement, Isbell described the album as “a collection of grown-up songs” about adult love, change, the danger of nostalgia, and redemption. “There is something about boundaries on this record,” said Isbell adding, “As you mature, you still attempt to keep the ability to love somebody fully and completely while you’re growing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.”

“Death Wish” keeps in alignment with this emotional whirlwind.

“Some [songs] will make you cry alone in your car, and others will make you sing along with thousands of strangers in a big summer pavilion, united in the great miracle of being alive,” Isbell declared in a statement.

The massive K-Pop group Twice has announced that they’ll be heading on their fifth world tour this year. Titled the Ready To Be Tour, after their forthcoming EP, and teased as “Part 1” on the official poster, Twice’s shows will kick off in Seoul, South Korea, before heading to Australia, Japan, and cities across North America.

With this new tour, it will make Twice both the only female K-pop group to headline in MLB and NFL stadiums and the first to play at East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium, Dallas’ Globe Life Field, Atlanta’s Truist Park, and Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium.

For shows in the US, fans are able to register through Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program now through March 8. They will then receive an access code to purchase tickets at a later date TBA. More information on registration is available here.

Even though Miley Cyrus can buy them for herself, it’s about time to give the pop icon her “Flowers,” as the aforementioned single sits at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The chart dated for the week of February 25, 2023 marks the fifth week for “Flowers” at No. 1.

At No. 2 is SZA’s “Kill Bill,” which has held this spot for six weeks. On this song, which has gone viral on TikTok, SZA humorously fantasizes about killing her ex.

Metro Boomin’, The Weeknd, and 21 Savage hold the No. 3 spot with “Creepin’,” which interpolates Mario Winans and Diddy’s 2004 hit, “I Don’t Wanna Know.”

Continuing the hot streak of breakup anthems is “Boy’s A Liar, Pt. 2,” by PinkPantheress and Ice Spice, which is currently at No. 4. This marks a 11-spot leap for the two rising artists, as the song debuted at No. 15 last week. It also marks the highest-charting hit for both artists.

Look. I have never understood people’s fascination with celebrity couples. But even my usual level of confusion pales to the neck-breaking double take I just pulled at TMZ’s latest celebrity gossip report. Of all the famous people most of us — and by most, I mean like 99.99 percent — would never have expected to be romantically linked to each other, Avril Lavigne and Tyga would have been at the top of the list… provided anyone ever thought they even knew each other.

And yet, there they are at Nobu, reportedly hugging it out in the parking lot before leaving together in the same car. According to TMZ’s notorious “sources,” the two have actually been spending a lot of time together.

However, they might just be friends. As TMZ also points out, Lavigne was recently engaged to Minnesota alt-musician Mod Sun. They dated from 2021 to March 2022 when they announced their engagement, although Mod Sun had previously dated two women in a polyamorous relationship, so the possibility remains open.

Meanwhile, there is a link between Lavigne and Tyga: Both dated members of the Jenner/Kardashian family. Tyga was previously linked with Kylie Jenner, while Lavigne had previously dated Jenner’s brother Rob (who has a child with Blac Chyna, with whom Tyga also shares a child). For now, any dating rumors between the two are pure speculation — but speculation that has fans flabbergasted.

Vladimir Putin pulled out his big boy pants while complaining about a lack of respect for Russia’s (non-)military prowess. This is very funny, yes, for the same reason that it’s simply too ridiculous that Viagra and Botox concerns are floating around while Putin’s war on Ukraine mounts staggering deaths and casualties on the regular. Putin is, however, still insisting that he’s going to win this conflict, despite the evidence, but he has also continued to substantially blame the U.S. for being “American warmongers” who “incite the Kyiv regime to further escalate the war.”

With fingers firmly pointed, Putin has now decided to stomp his feet in a dangerous way: by pulling out of a nuclear treaty while suggesting that he’s not above using those weapons. He’s also expressing irritation at how the West doubts his ability to win his war. Via Reuters:

“The elites of the West do not hide their purpose. But they also cannot fail to realise that it is impossible to defeat Russia on the battlefield… I am forced to announce today that Russia is suspending its participation in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.”

Interestingly enough, Putin’s pulling this card right as President Biden has shown up in Poland for a surprise address on Ukraine. This will surely only prompt more harsh words from the Kremlin, so there’s that to look forward to, unlike the nuclear threats, which are never fun.

Marey Carey may be the unofficial “Queen Of Christmas” due to her record-breaking song, “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Still, apparently, there’s another festive title the decorated songwriter has her eye on. Carey and all her fabulosity have continued to embrace the social media platform TikTok, thanks in part to her daughter Monroe Cannon’s love for the app.

As the singer’s 2009 song “It’s A Wrap” remains atop the trending sounds on the platform, Carey and her daughter have found joy in creating short TikTok videos using the audio clip. In their latest video, they enlisted the help of another famous mother-and-daughter duo, Kim Kardashian and North West. North West is no stranger to the platform, having gone viral for several of her videos, including one in which she dressed up as her father, rapper and fashion designer Kanye West.

As North and Monroe hit their simple choreographed moves while lip-syncing along to the song, their mothers join in just before the video wraps up. The video, uploaded to Carey’s official TikTok page with the caption, “It’s a wrap! But never for us,” has earned an impressive 3.5 million views and over 500,000 likes. That is not bad for a song released over 10 years ago.
