In their second performance of the night, Sam Smith delivered a performance of “Gloria” on the Saturday Night Live stage. During the performance, Smith was joined by a choir, who delivered beautiful harmonies throughout the song.

“Demons on my shoulder / Monsters in my head / Shadow in the water / Will you be my friend? / The world revolves around me / As I lay in my bed / Dreaming of more, more,” sing Smith and the choir on the song’s opening verse.

Sharon Stone also made an appearance during the performance, laying face-up in a chair, then arising midway through the song.

The performance took place days before their upcoming fourth studio album, also called Gloria, is set for release.

While Smith is largely known for their break-up songs and heartbreak anthems, they said in an interview with Refinery29 that Gloria will be rooted in pure queer joy.

“I wanted to make an album that was joyful,” Smith said. “I felt like heartbreak had become such a safe place for me in terms of writing music that it was quite scary to write something joyful.”

After Magomed Ankalaev and Jan Blachowicz fought to a controversial split draw at UFC 282, the promotion was determined to fill the vacant light heavyweight and swiftly moved to Glover Teixeira and Jamahal Hill in the main event of UFC 283.

On Saturday night, there was no doubt who the next champion was, as Hill (12-1) overwhelmed Teixeira (33-9) with a unanimous decision victory to take the gold.

Teixeira immediately went for the takedown, but Hill fought him off and kept the former champ at distance. Hill landed a few knees to the head from the clinch and snapped low kicks to avoid the level changes. Teixeira snapped a calf kick that looked to bother Hill toward the end of the round, but Hill went back to combinations up top.

Hill wobbled Teixeira with a massive head kick in the second and backed the former champ against the cage, looking to close the deal with shot after shot. Teixeira found his legs and went right back at Hill, opening a cut on the up-and-comer. Hill snapped a huge head kick again, but Teixeira kept his feet and followed with his first successful takedown of the night. Teixeira took Hill’s back, but Hill spun through into guard. Teixeira swarmed Hill on the ground and moved into side control as Hill slid to sitting against the cage. Hill slipped up from Teixeira’s grip and made his way back to his feet. Teixeira continued pressing forward as Hill threw counter attacks moving backward.

Hill sent Teixeira on his back to open the third and Teixeira fought off Hill as best he could from his back. Back on his feet, Teixeira kept moving forward and Hill’s conditioning began to become an issue. Teixeira went to his jab over and again, while Hill loaded up with big shots of his own.

Hill was rejuvenated opening the fourth, mixing in jabs and going back to his stinging head kick. Teixeira connected on a big uppercut that appeared to hurt his opponent, but he couldn’t follow up with anything of substance. Between rounds, Teixeira’s corner discussed stopping the fight, but ultimately didn’t.

In the fifth and final round, Teixeira walked Hill against the cage and earned a takedown. From side control, Teixeira moved into half guard, then full mount. Hill slid under Teixeira and earned a takedown himself. With about a minute remaining, Hill stepped up and allowed Teixeira to get back to his feet before the final bell rung.

The light heavyweight title scene has been in disarray since Jiri Prochazka vacated the belt due to a shoulder injury that required surgery and would keep him out of action for six months. Teixeira, who was slated to face off in a rematch against Prochazka following his submission loss, reportedly declined a title opportunity and last-minute switch to fight Ankalaev. He instead requested a move one month later to UFC 283, which was declined, and the showdown at 282 was handed to Blachowicz. Saturday night, he got a fight on his terms in his first return to the Octagon since his loss last June.

Hill headed into the biggest fight of his career on a three-fight win streak, finishing former title contender Thiago Santos with a fourth-round TKO.

Ahead of their upcoming fourth studio album, Gloria, Sam Smith took to the Saturday Night Live stage. In their first performance of the night, Smith performed their No. 1 hit single, “Unholy.”

During the performance, Smith looked dazzling while wearing a large, fluffy dress, standing under a vibrant pink spotlight. While singing, Smith showed off their glamorous nails, while delivering powerhouse vocals throughout.

Their collaborator, Kim Petras, made a surprise appearance during the performance, as she was hidden under Smith’s dress. During her verse, Smith opened the bottom of the coat, revealing Petras, who grooved to the beat as she sang her portion of the song.

Last year, “Unholy” made chart history, as the collaboration was the first single by a non-binary and a trans artist to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Though this is the first time Smith has performed “Unholy” on SNL, this is the second time the song has made an appearance on the show. Back in October, “Unholy” played during a sketch where Jack Harlow and Bowen Yang played bartenders serving up tableside cocktails.

For the fourth time in their relatively short careers, Brandon Moreno (21-6-2) and Deiveson Figueiredo (21-3-1) squared off with the UFC flyweight belt on the line in the co-main event of UFC 283. This time, it was a big left hook from Moreno that caused Figueiredo’s eye to be swollen shut and awarded Moreno his second run as the king of the UFC flyweight division.

Moreno attacked Figueiredo with a takedown right from the opening bell, but couldn’t do much on the ground. Back on their feet, Moreno and Figueiredo traded a slew of shots, and with seconds left in the round, Figueiredo found his way into a heel hook and had the challenger in danger before the bell sounded.

Figueiredo was the more aggressive to open the second round, but Moreno was incredibly precise. Moreno shot for a takedown yet again and made his way to the ground, but after a scramble, Figueiredo locked in a momentary guillotine.

Early in the third, Moreno hurt Figueiredo with a big left hook, opening up a gash underneath his eye. Figueiredo tried to call for time, contending that it was an eye poke, but it was not given and Moreno jumped on him on the ground. He poured it on with the ground and pound, but Figueiredo continued to fight strong off his back until the bell rang for the end of the round.

Between rounds, Figueiredo’s eye was swollen shut and the referee stopped the bout.

Moreno and Figueiredo earned a majority draw in their first showdown before the former submitted the champ in their sequel and Figueiredo came away with the belt thanks to a decision win in their trilogy fight. After three consecutive fights, Moreno had to earn his way back into a title fight with a TKO victory over Kai Kara-France.

After the fight, Figueiredo announced this was his last fight at flyweight and he’ll be moving up to bantamweight moving forward.

At long last, Drake finally took to the stage at the Apollo Theater in New York City. The “Rich Flex” hitmaker had already postponed the show twice, but was not going to let anything keep him from performing this weekend — not even an injured ankle.

Uproxx was in attendance tonight (January 21) at the first of two Drake performances at the iconic New York theater. During his hotly anticipated show, he performed several of his hits across all of his eras. From features, to hit singles, to deep album cuts, Drake’s setlist was all-encompassing. Also, Drake was joined by the Dipset crew, who performed some of their hip-hop classics. 21 Savage also made an appearance, performing songs from his and Drake’s collaborative album, Her Loss.

After his release from jail last month, Gunna has finally shared his first piece of music since taking a plea deal. His latest comes in the form of “Brodies” by German rapper Ufo361. Ufo361’s verses are mostly in German, however, Gunna can be heard clear as day, sticking to his opulent, braggadocious guns.

“I’ve been countin’ bands with my brodies / My foreign b*tch so bad, I pay cash for her Lotus / Young Gunna, drip God, that’s on God, and they know this / Spit verse like a poet, factory-new Rolex,” he raps on his verse.

Last year, Gunna was arrested on racketeering charges, along with Young Thug and several members of the Young Stoner Life crew. Gunna took a plea deal back in December, which resulted in him being released. Thug and crew are currently on trial in Atlanta, and said trial is expected to take several weeks.

It is worth noting that Gunna doesn’t address the YSL trial on the song, nor has he addressed the song on social media. In fact, he’s maintained a relatively low-key online presence since his release.

The NFL, a multi-billion dollar enterprise, reacts to things breaking the same way that most of us do: they throw some tape on it. During the first quarter of Saturday night’s divisional round game between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles, play temporarily stopped following the first play the Giants had on their first drive of the evening.

The officials said it was an administrative stoppage, which covers a pretty broad range of things. It turns out the issue stemmed from one of the chains on the yard marker, which broke.

Now, you might think there are some spare yard markers in the back, and the folks on the chain gang could simply go grab those and use them. But that is not the case, my friends. Instead, someone grabbed some masking tape, got things all taped up, and everyone went back about their evening.

Just look at this thing, that tape is holding on for dear life.

There will be, at some point, a chance for a conversation to be had about whether or not the NFL should just invest in a chip in the ball and make yard markers far less important than they are now. But the game is on, so now is not that time.

Kylie Jenner has finally revealed the name of her and Travis Scott‘s son. Today (January 21) the reality star and makeup mogul took to Instagram to share an adorable set of photos of her and her son. The photo was captioned “AIRE” with a white heart emoji. While it was rather cryptic, Kylie’s mom, Kris Jenner commented on the post saying, “I love you Aire Webster,” confirming the baby’s name.

Aire was born last February, and Kylie and Scott had previously shared that their son’s name was Wolf Jacques Webster. However, shortly after revealing the name, Kylie took to her Instagram story to reveal that their son’s name was no longer Wolf.

“We just really didn’t feel like it was him.” Jenner said. “Just wanted to share because I keep seeing Wolf everywhere.”

Earlier this month, Kylie and Scott reportedly broke up, however, they are still said to be co-parenting Aire and their first-born daughter, Stormi.

“Kylie and Travis are off again, they were supposed to spend the holidays together, but she went to Aspen to be with her family and friends up there,” said the source close to the Kardashians. “This has happened so many times before, they’re known to be on again off again, but always remain friends and great coparents.”

Anyone who has ever played the game Operation likely feels a teensy bit of anxiety just thinking about it. The experience of painstakingly trying to extract the Charlie Horse with those tiny, wired tweezers with a steady hand, only to accidentally touch the metal side and get the lightning-like jolt of the buzzer is hard to shake. That’s the stuff of core memories right there.

But what if you had a humongous game board the size of a real human, with life-size bones and organs to extract? What if instead of tweezers, you had large tongs as tools to perform your operation? What if instead of Pavlovian-style fail buzzers, the game produced a much less traumatic womp womp womp sound when you mess up?

That’s exactly what students in Washington State University’s chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) spent the past two years designing and producing—a life-size Operation game that’s not only fun to play, but can help kids learn about the human body.

Students took on the project after Pullman Regional Hospital’s Center for Learning and Innovation approached WSU engineering professor Roland Chen about the idea. Chen took the concept to his senior-level design class and they created an initial plan, which was then passed on to the engineering club.

WSU senior Joel Villanueva, who served as a team leader on the project, tells Upworthy that approximately 15 students were involved in the game’s creation over the two years it took to complete it. The project was quite complex as it involved translating the computer-aided design to a real table, creating multiple prototypes, figuring out the right level of challenge and making sure it was safe for kids to use.

In terms of gameplay, Villanueva says it’s very similar to the original board game, but obviously much larger and with a few key differences. “We have tongs that aren’t connected to wires, which was a safety concern, so we found a way to increase that safety factor,” he says. “And it also has sound. So when it’s triggered, a red light is emitted and an error sound is also emitted.”

Villanueva says they didn’t want the fail signal to be too alarming, which makes sense since the game was made for kids at the local science center. So instead of the buzzing of the original game, touching the sides of the organ or bone opening results in a sad trombone sound—womp womp womp wommmp.

The game is officially referred to as the Surgery Skill Lab and is now a part of the EveryBODY exhibit at the Palouse Discovery Science Center (PDSC) in Pullman, Washington. It’s ultimately a learning tool, and Villanueva says they put the bones and organs in their appropriate locations in the body to help kids learn about human anatomy.

“We worked with the BMES [Biomedical Engineering Society] student section who created some fact sheets about the project,” adds Villanueva. “For example, ‘The heart pumps this much blood at a given time’—small fun facts like that.”

The bones were 3D printed, then coated with silicone (so the tongs can grip them), and the soft organs were molded out of silicone using 3D-printed molds.

The game was unveiled at a Family Night event at the PDSC on January 19, so Villanueva and his team got to see how it was received.

“It was an eye-catcher,” says Villanueva. “There were many kids playing with it and it seemed like they were having lots of fun with it.”

Jess Jones, who is part of the education team at PDSC, tells Upworthy that there was also a real doctor at the exhibit during the opening to talk with kids about medicine. She says the game has been a hit with kids so far.

“They’re loving it,” she says. “The organs are 3D printed so they feel kind of realistic. The kids are loving the texture.”

The project is a win-win for both the university students and the local community. The students got to put their engineering skills into practice using various software and technologies and also gained valuable life skills such as time management, documentation, leadership and more. And the community gained a fun and educational exhibit both kids and nostalgic adults can enjoy.

Three cheers for innovation and collaboration that helps us all learn. (And good riddance, stress-inducing buzzer.)

There are still good people in the world, and a farmer in Alabama left a legacy of kindness in his small town. Hody Childress lived in Geraldine, Alabama, which is about 40 miles outside of Huntsville and for the last 10 years of his life he made anonymous donations to the local pharmacy. No, the pharmacy isn’t a charity, so donations aren’t something they’re accustomed to receiving.

But Childress was on a mission to help his struggling townspeople with access to medications that may be essential. Pharmacies likely run into many people during the week or month that can’t afford the pricey cost of some of their prescriptions. I’ve personally seen pharmacists look up prices from other pharmacies to find the cheapest cost for the customer, or use a GoodRx card to help offset the cost.

Medications aren’t only designed to make you feel better, some are there to keep you alive. But if the price tag is $600 and you’re on a fixed income of $1,000 a month, survival becomes infinitely more difficult. Childress didn’t want anyone in that position if he could help it, though he himself was on a fixed income.

A decade ago Childress walked into his local pharmacy, Geraldine Drugs and spoke to the owner, Brooke Walker to find out if anyone in town had difficulty paying for their pharmacy bills. When Walker confirmed that it was a regular problem, Childress handed her a hundred dollar bill and told her to use it for those that couldn’t afford their medicine.

Walker told Good Morning America, “he handed me a bill and it was folded up. I couldn’t see what it was. He said, ‘the next time that happens I want you to use this to help them out and I want it to be anonymous. I don’t want to know who you use it for and I don’t want them to know my name. I just want you to tell them it was a blessing from God.'”

In fact, Childress was so serious about keeping it a secret that he didn’t even tell his own children until shortly before he died earlier this year, and they weren’t at all surprised.

“He told me he’d been carrying a $100 bill to the pharmacist in Geraldine on the first of each month, and he didn’t want to know who she’d helped with it — he just wanted to bless people with it,” Tania Nix, Childress’s daughter revealed to The Washington Post. Nix told the news outlet that it was simply who her father was, saying, “He didn’t spend a lot of money in life, but he always gave what he could.”

Childress was an Air Force veteran and eventually retired from Lockheed Martin in Huntsville but always found joy in farming. “Every time he went to the post office, he’d take the postmaster an apple, or some sweet potatoes, squash or okra he’d grown on his farm,” Nix told The Washington Post.

Kindness isn’t an act done in front of a crowd. It’s the small things that add up to big things and the things you do when no one is watching. Childress was a kind man and through his monthly donation, thousands of dollars went to helping his neighbors.
