An Additional Segment Of Bill Maher’s Long-Running HBO Show Will Soon Air On CNN On Friday Nights

Ever since Warner Bros. and Discovery merged in April 2022, the dozens of TV channels those brands own — and the hundreds of shows that air on them — have been in a state of flux. HBO has been one of the most famously hit properties, with beloved (and, yes, popular — or at least thought to be) shows like Westworld, Minx, and Los Espookys being cancelled, seemingly out of nowhere. Hell, even FBOY Island got the ax! So while there have been many losers as a result of this merger (including fans of those shows that now cease to exist), it seems the big winner in all of this is Bill Maher.

As TheStreet reports, the polarizing politico and comedian, who has been hosting HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher for 20 years now (it premiered in February 2003), is about to get even more airtime. The show’s “Overtime” segment, a more casual conversation between the host and his guests that generally continues after the filmed segment has ended and sees them talking about everything from politics to pop culture, will land a spot on CNN’s widening calendar on Friday nights, airing each week at 11:30 p.m.

As for the network’s relationship with Maher, CNN announced the programming news in a press release, which stated:

“Maher headlined his first special on HBO in 1989 and has starred in 12 HBO solo specials to date. Recognized as having the ability to ‘consistently get people talking’ and an ‘eclectic guest list,’ Maher’s Overtime joins several other recent partnerships between HBO and CNN.”

And we won’t have to wait long to watch it. Overtime will start its CNN run on Friday, February 3.

Donald Glover’s Next Show Is Inspired By Beyoncé, The Beyhive, And The Dark Side Of Standom

Now that Atlanta is all wrapped up, Donald Glover is setting his sights on another aspect of the recording industry: The dark side of standom. According to Vanity Fair, Glover’s next television project, Swarm, is inspired by Beyoncé and her infamous Beyhive.

The Hive has been one of the most notorious and feared fan groups in music for some time; critics and casuals alike must be wary of insulting Queen Bey (even unintentionally), lest they incur the wrath of her thousands of defensive, chronically-online stans. Not even Nicole Curran, the wife of the Golden State Warriors co-owner, was safe when she got a little too close to Jay-Z for comfort.

Glover’s new project will scrutinize stan culture through the story of Dre (portrayed by Dominique Fishback), whose obsession with a pop star (who is apparently very inspired by Beyoncé) takes her to some dark places, judging from the screenshots provided by Vanity Fair. Ironically, Dre’s sister will be played by Chloe Bailey — who is best known as one-half of sister duo Chloe X Halle and signed to Beyonce’s label, Parkwood. Meanwhile, Dre’s love interest will be played by Damson Idris, of Snowfall fame.

The show will be executive produced by Atlanta writer Janine Nabors and will stream on Amazon Prime Video.

The ‘King Of The Hill’ Revival Is Ready To Fire Up The Grill At Hulu

The King of the Hill revival has officially found a home on Hulu. After creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels kicked off “hot negotiations” back in March 2021, Hulu emerged as the victor and is bringing back the original cast from the hit series that ran for 13 seasons on Fox.

“We are all so excited to welcome back Hank, Peggy, and Bobby, and to see what they have to say about the world we live in and continue the conversations we began years ago,” ABC Entertainment, Hulu, and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals president Craig Erwich said in a statement. “This show has all of the perfect ingredients to meet this moment in animation at Hulu, and we’re so thankful to be having those conversations alongside this talented group.”

For those who aren’t familiar with the Hills or the classic animated comedy, here’s a rundown via Deadline:

The show, set in the fictional Arlen, Texas, follows the life of Hank Hill (Mike Judge), an enthusiastic seller of propane and propane accessories; his wife, Peggy (Kathy Najimy), the local Boggle champ and substitute teacher; and their 13-year-old son, Bobby (Pamela Adlon), who defies any expectation his father had for a son. Hank’s friends — conspiracy theorist Dale (Johnny Hardwick), military barber Bill (Stephen Root) and cool but inarticulate Boomhauer (Judge) — along with Peggy’s friends Minh and meteorologist Nancy, and Bobby’s friend Connie, help the Hills navigate a changing world.

According to writer Brent Forrester, the revival was sparked thanks to Donald Trump, whose single term as president made the characters and its small-town setting “very relevant again.” So… thanks… for that.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Music Re-Enters The ‘Billboard’ 200 Chart Following David Crosby’s Death

The music industry is still mourning the passing of folk-rock pioneer David Crosby. Former bandmates Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young have shared touching tributes in his honor. Other entertainers like Jason Isbell have also shared their fondest memories of the late musician.

Now fans have joined together to show their love for Crosby. Whether intentional or not, due to the streaming uptick of the late entertainer’s discography, two albums have re-entered the Billboard 200 chart. The albums in question are Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 1970 album Déjà Vu and their 2005 compilation Greatest Hits.

Déjà Vu landed in the No. 129 slot on the Billboard 200 chart, while Greatest Hits came in at the No. 156 spot. As Crosby is considered to be one of the premiere creative forces in the folk-rock and psychedelia movement of the ’60s during his time with the band The Byrds, this outpouring of love shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Given that the late musician was reportedly giddy about new material he was working on before his passing, Crosby would have most likely been excited to see his work re-entering the music charts.

James Gunn Drops Some Hints About The New ‘Game Of Thrones’-Inspired Wonder Woman TV Series

Both HBO and the DCEU have been undergoing extensive changes in order to keep up with all of the many Marvel titles that Disney+ has been churning out over the last year. In 2022 alone, Disney+ released eight (8!) different shows, films and specials that took place in the superhero universe, while DC was struggling with some other stuff. Now that DC Studios has given the reigns to Marvel alum James Gunn and Peter Safran, they are looking to compete with the various multiverses.

The duo has revealed their plans for the next phase of DC Studios, which includes six new films and five shows that will be produced in the coming years. One of the shows on the schedule is a new Wonder Woman series, titled Paradise Lost.

Gunn and Safran described Paradise Lost as a Game of Thrones-style drama taking place in Wonder Woman’s birthplace of Themyscira, which she visited in Wonder Woman 1984. The series will take place before the events of any of the DC Wonder Woman films, and focus on the all-female island and its political dynamics. It’s a promising plot that has been working out so far for the cast of Yellowjackets.

“One of our strategies is to take our diamond characters, which is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and we use them to prop up other characters that people don’t know,” Gunn explained, so while we might not get to see Wonder Woman herself, we will see her ancestors of god-like women all living and fighting together. Which is a pretty good alternative! Gal Gadot is probably very relieved.

The Empire State Building Channeled Taylor Swift Following Its Widely Derided And Deeply Confusing Support Of The Philadelphia Eagles

Well, it’s official: the Empire State Building is officially in its Reputation era. And no, sadly, it’s not even an Easter egg for Taylor’s Version yet.

Using the same audio that Swift used for the intro to her Reputation tour, the Empire State Building layered it over a video montage of a bunch of articles and hate tweets directed at them. “We’ll see you at the Big Game,” they captioned the post.

As their social media team have been documented Swifties in the past, this move comes as no surprise.

The drama started after the football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday when the Empire State Building decided to support the Eagles’ win by switching their lights to green. Immediately, sports fans met the Twitter account for a literal building with intense hate that boiled over into real life.

According to a post from someone live on the scene on Sunday, New York Giants fans flooded the lobby of the Empire State Building with two demands: that the lights be switched and their Twitter poster be fired.

Despite the building also later turning the building red for the Kansas City Chiefs, it appeared the sports bros were still pretty mad. Even New York’s mayor got in on the hate train by calling the move “unfortunate.” (The Eagles had previously beaten the Giants a week earlier.)

A few days later, it seems they are not only standing by their decision but are fully making the most of the hate.

An Overdue Appreciation Of Alexander Skarsgård, Hollywood’s Tallest Silly Little Guy

At 6’3, I’m often the tallest person in the room, especially if I’m in a room with notoriously short actors. But I’ve never felt shorter than when I briefly spoke to Alexander Skarsgård. It was years ago, back during the early (good) seasons of True Blood. I had a friend who worked at TV Guide magazine and he tipped me off that Skarsgård would be visiting the office in Manhattan for an interview to discuss the HBO vampire series, and if I loitered outside around so-and-so time, I might be able to meet him. Which I did.

This is stalker-y in retrospect (sorry!), but Skarsgård couldn’t have been nicer. He autographed my bottle of Tru Blood that I purchased at the HBO Store and we spoke about… I’m not sure what we talked about. All I remember is looking up and feeling like I was talking to a mountain. Skarsgård is only an inch taller than me, but he has the presence of someone who’s pushing 7 feet. That handsome presence, along with his obvious talent, is one of the reasons why he’s become an in-demand TV and movie star.

The other: he’s up for anything.

In Brandon Cronenberg’s (sadly R-rated) Infinity Pool, Skarsgård plays James, a struggling novelist who’s able to stay at fancy resorts after marrying rich. While on vacation in a fictional European country, James and Mia (Cleopatra Coleman) meet another couple, Gabi (Mia Goth) and Alban (Jalil Lespert), who convince them to leave the resort compound for a day of drinking and eating — and a secret handjob. While driving back, an intoxicated James hits a farmer and instead of calling the cops, they leave his body on the road. The next day, James and Mia, as well as Gabi and Alban, are arrested. James has two options: he can be executed, or he can get cloned and have his body be killed instead, assuming he can afford it. He — well, his wife — can afford it. The cloning procedure requires James — and by proxy, Skarsgård — to be stripped down, wear a piece of plastic in his mouth that makes him look like Homer at the Re-Neducation Center, and step into goo. This is not the most physically and mentally demanding thing that happens to him in the movie. There are orgies, James has to fight a leashed dog-like version of himself (Skarsgård seemed to really enjoy this), and in a moment of public emasculation, he drinks milk from Gabi’s breast.

Mia Goth is the one being asked about “provocative” performances, and don’t get me wrong, she’s incredible in Infinity Pool (she also deserved an Oscar nomination for Pearl, but alas). The scene where she’s on the hood of a car, holding a gun at James, and nearly in tears when her bottle of wine rolls away? That’s cinema. But the scene wouldn’t be possible without a beleaguered-looking Skarsgård being open to humiliating himself.

Throughout his career, Skarsgård has shown a willingness to do whatever. Get blown up in a gasoline fight? You bet. Naked volcano fight with CGI genitals? Sure. Swing from ropes during a wildebeest stampede to rescue Margot Robbie? Obviously. Hell, I’d do that last one. But the others, not so much. He’s also watched Kong fight Godzilla; joined a Lars von Trier movie without reading the script (always risky); filmed a neo-noir thriller in freezing conditions; and been called the “king of sex scenes” for a movie where he takes a teenage girl’s virginity. On the TV side, he’s played Nicole Kidman’s abusive husband (Big Little Lies), a lascivious of himself (Atlanta), a marine (Generation Kill), an Israeli intelligence officer (The Little Drummer Girl), a Werner Herzog-type (Documentary Now), and an over-it tech mogul who’s really good at fake crying (Succession).

Then there’s the IMDb photo.

“The year before, Zac Efron had taken his shirt off. He is so sexy. I decided to also show a little bit of skin. I couldn’t take my shirt off, ’cause Zac had already done that. So I thought, well, then I’ll take my pants off, ’cause it’s equally sexy,” Skarsgård explained about the pantsless profile pic. Even when he’s being “sexy,” he’s doing it with a wink. Or as he told GQ, “I just don’t give as much of a f*ck any more.”

That not-giving-a-fuck attitude is why Skarsgård will show up to a premiere in drag or shave half his head. He won’t allow himself to be typecast as a boring hunk; he’d rather have another man suck his toes in an orgy scene than become the next Chr*s Pr*tt.

It took awhile for Skarsgård’s full range of perverse-to-playful talent to be explored, but it’s always been there. After watching Infinity Pool, I found the Tru Blood from our years-ago encounter and remembered that when he signed his name on what’s supposed to be a literal bottle of blood (perverse), he drew goofy vampire teeth into the autograph (playful). Let’s give it up for Skarsgård, Hollywood’s tallest silly little guy.

Seth Meyers Has His Popcorn Ready For Trump Going On The Attack Against ‘Very Disloyal’ Ron DeSantis

If there’s one thing Seth Meyers lives for, it’s this video of Joe Biden tripping up the steps to Air Force One — twice!

But he also loves a good political rivalry, especially one that involves former president Donald Trump, whose lack of talent for turning people’s names into insults is practically legendary at this point. Which is only part of the reason Meyers is so excited to watch Trump go head-to-head with Florida governor Ron DeSantis, a.k.a. Ron DeSanctimonious (good one, Donald).

On Monday night, Meyers dedicated much of his “A Closer Look” segment to the chaos surrounding the Republican party, including the fact that there was the actual possibility of it being run by MyPillow weirdo Mike Lindell. But, despite being under investigation for a sh*tload of crimes (yes, that is an official measurement) — not the least of which being inciting an insurrection on January 6th — Trump is refusing to read the room, as always, and kicking off his 2024 election campaign. Yet rather than explain what he plans to do to Make America Great Again… Again, Donald’s chosen method of pitching himself as leader of the free world is to knock anyone who might challenge him. As Meyers explained:

“Trump is up there as if he never once incited a coup or oversaw one of the most disastrous, chaotic, corrupt presidencies in American history. He’s even freely taking shots at his main rival Ron DeSantis. No one in the GOP seems to care. In fact, Trump spent all weekend going after DeSantis, calling his ‘disloyal’ if he runs while he was on his campaign plane, flying from one stop to the next.”

In a clip from CNN, Trump basically took credit for DeSantis even having a heartbeat. “So Ron would have not been governor if it wasn’t for me, and that’s ok,” Trump said — while clearly it was NOT ok. “Number one, he wouldn’t have gotten the nomination. And, number two, he wouldn’t have beaten his Democratic opponent. So, then when I hear he might run, you know, I consider that very disloyal. But, it’s not about loyalty, but to me it is. It’s always about loyalty. But for a lot of people it’s not.”

Meyers could barely contain his excitement at what’s to come in this rivalry — especially once Trump “sees that picture of DeSantis in his fancy white boots. It’s a real picture. Can you imagine what Trump is going to say once he sees that picture of DeSantis? ‘You know, it’s not fair. Many people are saying Ron stole those fancy little boots from the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. And he should give ‘em back, that’s not nice.’”

NBC

Ultimately, concluded Meyers, it’s the GOP’s fault that Trump is back. Because while many members of the 45th president’s own party have made it clear that they want nothing to do with Trump, no one has had the guts to say it loudly and publicly. And, according to Meyers, “If Republicans don’t take on Trump directly, he could very well tear through them like he did in 2016.”

You can watch the full segment above (the DeSantis convo begins around the 11:45 mark).

James Gunn Will Introduce A New DCU Batman (And His Son Damian) In ‘The Brave And The Bold’ Movie

With James Gunn finally revealing the first chapter in his upcoming DC Universe slate, one of the surprising additions is a new movie titled The Brave and the Bold. According to Gunn, this film will introduce a new Batman to the DCU along with his son Damian Wayne who takes on the mantle of Robin in the comics.

What makes The Brave and the Bold an interesting inclusion is that, until now, there has been little talk of Gunn’s plans for Batman. The upcoming The Flash movie was supposed to wipe away Ben Affleck‘s Batman and replace him with Michael Keaton, but clearly that strategy is out the window as Gunn lays out his more connected universe as DC gets ready to go toe-to-toe with Marvel.

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

“This is the introduction of the DCU Batman,” said Gunn. “Of Bruce Wayne and also introduces our favorite Robin, Damian Wayne, who is a little son of a bitch.” The movie will take inspiration from the now-classic Batman run written by Grant Morrison that introduced Batman to a son he never knew existed: a murderous tween raised by assassins. “It’s a very strange father-and-son story.”

In the comics, Damian Wayne is the son of Batman and Talia al Ghul, daughter of the classic villian Ra’s al Ghul. However, his existence is a surprise to Batman who has the kid unceremoniously dropped on his doorstep by his mother. While attempting to take him under his wing, Batman quickly learns that Damian has other, more deadly plans for dishing out justice, and he’s arrogantly confident in his ability to do so. He’s also the rightful heir to the Batman mantle, and Damian’s future as The Dark Knight is foreboding to say the least.
