10 of our absolute favorite photos from National Geographic’s Pictures of the Year 2022 issue

The editors at National Geographic had the impossible task of choosing the best photos taken for the magazine in 2022 for its Pictures of the Year issue. Why? Because this year, 132 photographers were sent on assignment in 60 countries and 2,238,899 images were filed.

But the editors were able to pare them down to 36 images that offer breathtaking glimpses of our shared human journey and remind us of the incredible planet we all share.

“The photos selected for ‘Pictures of the Year’ stop us in our tracks and make us pay attention to stories that need to be told,” Whitney Johnson Latorre, VP of visuals and immersive experiences for National Geographic Media, said in a statement. “Each image reveals a portrait of life in motion, encouraging us all to see the world around us in new and unprecedented ways; that is the power of visual storytelling.”

“I love that Nat Geo’s ‘Pictures of the Year 2022’ isn’t merely capturing the news highlights of the year; we’re showcasing the powerful stories of the year that our photographers around the globe have had their lens on,” noted National Geographic Editor-in-Chief Nathan Lump. “As a result, the collection captures novelty and surprise in a way that I believe expresses the best of what we do at Nat Geo.”

Here are 10 of Upworthy’s favorite images from National Geographic’s Pictures of the Year 2022.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, launched from Cape Canaveral in the early hours of June 19, streaks above a stand of bald cypress trees. This was the second time in less than a year that a SpaceX rocket appeared in photographer Mac Stone’s frame while he was shooting at night in a remote swamp. Stone says that the increased frequency of launches without fanfare “suggests that we have crossed over into a new era where cosmic missions are simply business as usual.”

Wild Asian elephants mingle with cattle at a garbage dump near Minneriya, in central Sri Lanka. The island nation is home to some 6,000 pachyderms living in close contact with people. Having lost their lowland forest home, elephants now seek out human-affected habitats, including croplands, and are master generalists, capable of eating at least 100 different plants. That doesn’t mean that Sri Lankan elephants are thriving; they instead may be coping. Researchers are tracking their levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, that could be detrimental to the elephants’ health

In this desert setting, heat and drought “threaten a delicate balance of life,” says photographer Keith Ladzinski—life that includes populations of inquisitive meerkats.

Visitors ascend the spiraling 150-foot-high boardwalk in the yellowing autumn at Denmark’s Camp Adventure to gain a new perspective on the forest southwest of Copenhagen—and, perhaps, on life itself. “Forest bathing,” among the woods’ most powerful and least tangible benefits, has been shown to reduce stress and improve mental and physical well-being.

To create this image of Bears Ears National Monument, Stephen Wilkes took 2,092 photos over 36 hours, combining 44 of them to show a sunrise, a full moon and a rare alignment of four planets. “Beyond the sense of awe and beauty,” he says, “there’s a palpable sense of history with every step you take.” This spectacular landscape in southeastern Utah exemplifies the risk to some of the country’s unique, irreplaceable places. One president preserved it at the urging of Native Americans who hold it sacred; another tried to open it to drilling and mining. The national monument is rich in archaeological sites, including the Citadel, an ancient cliff dwelling now popular with hikers.

Manatees, among other sea life, adorn a convenience store’s mural in Crystal River, a coastal city in western Florida known as the Manatee Capital of the World. A refuge for the sea mammals operates there

Photographer Ami Vitale showcased these 6-month-old cubs snacking and playing as part of her long-term focus on giant panda conservation

“The warmth I felt in Durban was so refreshing,” Lawrence says. Unathi Madalane (at left) and Tshiamo Maretela enjoy the beach.

Photographed at night with an infrared camera, a spotted hyena that scientists nicknamed Palazzo submissively grins and lays her ears back as Moulin Rouge, the clan’s dominant female at the time, towers over her. Palazzo’s cub peers out from between them. Unlike most social mammals, females rule among spotted hyenas, maintaining their hierarchy through relationships with female allies. These African predators, the largest members of the hyena family, weigh up to 190 pounds, and females are on average 10% heavier than males. Clans, some topping 100 animals, form complex societies.

Viktor, a 39-year-old male bonobo, resides in Texas at the Fort Worth Zoo, where he’s known for interacting with visitors. Veteran photographer Vince Musi is known for capturing animals’ personalities in portraits such as this one.

13 bizarre dreams people say they’ve had over and over

Having the same dream over and over again is a fairly common human experience. And while they can be pleasant, most recurring dreams lean toward the negative.

Even if they aren’t nightmares, recurring dreams can often put people in stressful situations, like getting trapped, losing control of a vehicle or showing up late to an important event. Many theories agree that this is more than our brains torturing us—instead, the repeating themes are symbolically related to some kind of unresolved challenge or unmet need in our waking life. Sort of like wringing out the residue of our subconscious.

Whether or not there’s evidence backing this theory, it’s probably still a good idea to take recurring dreams seriously. According to the Sleep Foundation, adults who experience frequent recurring dreams tend to have worse psychological health than those who do not.

Recurring dreams can also be a symptom of PTSD or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). If this is the case, the Sleep Foundation suggests that it might be helpful to find professional support through therapy or counseling. That said, there are other lifestyle changes that can help alleviate recurring dreams, such as exercise, breathing exercises or meditation, as well as developing a solid sleep routine.

Reddit user u/Direct_Conclusion_40 asked the online community to share their own recurring dreams. As odd as they were, many people shared similar images and themes. And while each individual might have their own reason behind those dreams, it’s still cool to think that we all have this imaginary thread connecting us through imaginary experiences. Or at the very least, it’s fun to balk at how weird the human brain is.

Below are 13 odd dreams that people said they repeatedly have:

1. “Having to take an exam and realize I forgot to attend class all semester.”

– @liftheavyrunfaster

This is so popular it got its own Washington Post article. The experts interviewed suggested that the dream represents being tested in some way, and there’s anxiety about not being prepared or measuring up. It’s coupled with the strong emotional memories tied to high school. Makes sense.

2. “Frustration. I can never dial the phone, or read the book, or arrive where I’m trying to go, or find what I’m looking for. It doesn’t matter what the scenario of the dream is, if I pursue it, it will be unobtainable.”

– @CoolRanchTriceratops

3. “Losing my teeth.”

via GIPHY

– @DavePaez

Ah, another classic. I was personally interested in this one, as this dream haunts me. Turns out there are several potential reasons—everything from dealing with loss, to concerns about well-being, to a fear of being criticized. Oh, and death. It could mean that.

4. “Finding a new room, or sometimes a whole wing, of my apartment that has somehow been there the whole time without me noticing. Sometimes it has incredible things inside (like an amazing bathtub, or a beautiful mirror, or a carousel horse). It’s never exactly the same dream but the theme has been reoccurring for over 30 years.”

– @PixelPantsAshli

5. “Not finding a bathroom. The location changes (a mall, or school, or whatever) but I cannot find the bathroom. I’ve been told it’s anxiety.”

– @Sea_Tune9183

6. “Being chased.”

via GIPHY

– @henderson7779

@sunnyfleur0330 added:

“Before my grandma died when I was younger (12ish), I had a dream about wolves chasing a girl up a mountain. I had this dream all the time, and the day they finally caught her… we got the phone call that my grandma died. It was crazy. I haven’t had that dream since.”

7. “Trying to dial 911 and touching only the wrong numbers over and over. While some emergency is going on.”

via GIPHY

– @ResistantGrey·

8. “For months I would build this monolith and while I’m dreaming I know it’s purpose, what it is. When I awake it’s gone, just memories of the labor. The next night I’d return to a clean slate.”

– @DonutUnlikely

9. “So many of my dreams take place in a sad, dreary shore town somewhere east coast USA. Maybe Jersey/Delaware/Maryland/Virginia. Somewhere there. Always grey outside, chilly, not shore weather. Sad old row homes, a crappy boardwalk with broken rides and crappy shops that sell overpriced souvenirs, a weird airstrip for small private planes, one large building with an Italian restaurant on the top floor. And a giant wave that destroys it sometimes. Not weird at all.”

– @HaHaClintonDixBimbos

10. “Elevators that won’t stop going way up really really fast.”

– @jumpy_cupcake_eater

11. “Tornadoes…I’m trying to not get sucked up by one and run but it always catches up. then it gets really hard to see it’s pitch black. I see nothing but i hear the loud wind and everything. As i feel debris crashing into me tearing me to shreds till only my consciousness is left of my life before i wake up entirely.”

– @Certain_Blacksmith

12. “Traveling. Not like going on vacation, but I’m on a train/bus/plane and something stressful happens. Miss my stop, I’m late, forgot my passport etc. One time I dreamed my bags were so heavy I couldn’t move them.”

via GIPHY

– @him37423

And finally…

13. “The same for 30 years. There is a hole in the sky. I know what it is, and tell my family not to look at it. We organize and go about prepping the house for the impending doom. Sometimes looters come to my house and I have to kill them, I normally shoot them. Most of the time my wife gets shot. Sometimes I get shot.”

Pink shares a proud mama video of her daughter’s first singing recital

One of the best things social media offers is the ability for parents to share some of their kids’ big moments. Proud parents are going to proud parent, and modern technology gives us ample opportunity to publicly gush about our offspring without forcing anyone to bear witness to their burgeoning talents.

Celebrity parents are in a bit of a different boat, however. When you’re a household name with millions of followers, you might think twice about sharing your proud parent videos. But iconic pop star Pink has shared a video of her daughter’s first singing recital just like any other proud mama would, and it’s totally sweet.

Pink posted the video to an Instagram reel with the caption “This 11 year old (11,000 year old soul) blows me away.”

Pink’s daughter Willow can be seen standing on a stage holding a microphone with a purple curtain behind her. A Christmas tree sits on stage to her left and a piano to her right. The piano accompaniment begins, and she begins to sing “The Rose Song” by Olivia Rodrigo.

Imagine being the child of one of the best singers in modern times and wanting to be a singer yourself. It would be so hard not to feel a huge amount of pressure or feel like people are going to expect you to sound like your mom.

But Willow’s voice is sweet and unique. She doesn’t sound that much like Pink, but her performance shows the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree nonetheless.

Watch:

It takes a lot of courage to stand on stage alone and sing, no matter how talented you are. So kudos to Willow for that alone.

But people are loving the performance itself, the way she connects emotionally with the song and how she keeps control of her voice. Even some other famous singers weighed in with praise for the 11-year-old.

“Holy cow!!! What a voice! What composure. Superstar,” wrote singer and actress Mandy Moore.

“Whoah Nelly!” wrote Nancy Wilson from Heart. “They’ll be no stopping her!”

Chrissy Metz of “This Is Us” fame shared a simple, emoji-filled “Wow.”

The video has thousands of comments from supportive fans, of course, but as any parent knows, the pride that comes with watching your child succeed at what they set out to do doesn’t require any fanfare. Pink’s sharing of her daughter’s recital comes from the same urge most parents have to celebrate our kids’ achievements and encourage them in their endeavors. (Did you notice the camera starting to slip up and up before coming back down? A sure sign of a parent trying to balance recording on a phone while watching the performance. Classic.)

It’s especially sweet to see this proud mama moment from Pink, as she’s previously shared that she never had an urge to be a mom.

“It surprised me. I didn’t really want to be a mom,” she told Carson Daly on Today last year. “I didn’t not not want to be a mom, but it just wasn’t sort of on my list of to-dos. I had Willow and, man, that saying of watching your heart go walking outside of your body, it’s truly how it feels.”

Indeed it is. Congrats to Willow on a beautiful recital and congrats to Pink for raising such a talented, self-composed young lady.

Adorable Nigerian dog festival is changing the stereotypes surrounding Africans and dogs

Nigeria is far behind the rest of the world when it comes to its treatment of dogs. It is one of the few countries left in the world where they are sold for their meat and many people who do own dogs keep them for protection, instead of as pets.

Matthew Nash, a lead researcher of an in-depth Dog-Friendly Country Index, ranked the country 45 out of the 51 on a list of dog-friendly countries. For the list, countries are ranked based on animal rights, pet-friendly hotels, veterinarian availability, animal protection, risk of rabies, recognition of animal sentience and animal companionship.

The good news for Nigeria and its dogs is that Jackie Idimogu, animal rights activist and organizer of the Lagos Dog Festival, is working to change her country’s relationship with dogs and doing it in a very adorable way.

For the past four years, the Lagos Dog Festival has been a way to change stereotypes of how Africans treat dogs by throwing a carnival that brings dog lovers and their furry pals together. The carnival’s main event is the Dog of the Year competition where the canines, dressed to the nines, take a walk on the red carpet.

The competition encourages dogs and their human companions to look their best while they strut their stuff.

“Since the dogs cannot express themselves vocally by saying thank you, we created Lagos Dog Carnival to create the humans that take care of these dogs, and also give awards to these dogs, it’s a way of appreciating people for the love they show to their animals,” Idimogu told Africa News.

This year’s competition saw a bunch of different breeds. Siberian huskies, American Staffordshire terriers, American Eskimos, Neapolitans, French bulldogs, Maltipoos, poodle crossbreeds and golden retrievers all strutted their stuff on the red carpet.

This year’s winner was Pasha, a 6-year-old Caucasian shepherd mix. He dazzled judges with his red and black outfit and black sunglasses. His look was perfect for this year’s theme, “Splashes of Colors.”

“I chose red because it is vibrant, it is royalty, it is majestic just like him,” his owner Hadiza Seidu said, according to Yahoo.

Pasha may have won because he and his owner are festival regulars.

“I would say we are like veterans because this is our fourth edition, so we’ve been coming to the carnival since 2019 and it feels really good and we look forward to it because it’s an opportunity for us to interact with other dogs, for me to meet other dog lovers and for him to get to socialize, so, I always look forward to it,” Seidu told Africa News.

Idimogu is happy with how the carnival is changing minds in Nigeria. “I have been able to make humans understand that dogs are not for guards like they are not just to be kept at the gate or outside the compound,” Idimogu said.

“I am happy to say that Nigerians are beginning to understand the love language of these animals,” she continued.

Selena Gomez Recreates Her Iconic ‘Crazy Hat’ Song From ‘Wizards Of Waverly Place’ In A Adorable TikTok Video

Nostalgia alert! In a clip shared to TikTok, Selena Gomez recreated her iconic “Crazy, Funky, Junky Hat” song from Disney’s Wizards Of Waverly Place.

Gomez and her friend, IG model, and influencer Lauren Wolfe, gave fans a special treat in a clip posted to Wolfe’s TikTok account. The actress and Wolfe showed off their adorable dance moves while lip-singing to the classic track.

“What’s that? A hat? Crazy, funky, junky hat,” Gomez and Wolfe lip-synched. “Overslept, hair unsightly. Trying to look like Keira Knightley. We’ve been there, we’ve done that. We see right through your funky hat.”

The song was initially performed by Gomez’s character on Wizards Of Waverly Place, Alex Russo, alongside her best friend, Harper Finkle, on the fourth episode of the show’s first season, back in 2007. The show followed the Russo family, who were restauranteurs by day, and wizards by night, complete with a lair behind their kitchen.

The Disney channel series was one of the longest-running programs, in the network’s history, with nearly 106 episodes, before going off the air in 20212. Joining them is That’s So Raven, with 100 episodes, and Hannah Montana, with 98.

This past October, the show celebrated its 15th anniversary.

These days you can find Gomez portraying Mabel Mora on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, where she plays a young artist turned amateur sleuth alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short.

Beyoncé Is Hosting A ‘Club Renaissance’ Secret Show In Los Angeles This Weekend

Forget the visuals, Beyoncé fans are about to have a new obsession over the next couple of days. She’s the latest artist to partner with Amazon Music for a special performance. However, while the Amazon Music Live series has included names like 2 Chainz and Megan Thee Stallion, Queen Bey is apparently looking to do something a little different, inspired by the concept behind her latest album, Renaissance.

Since the album takes inspiration from the underground club scene of the late ’70s and ’80s that spawned the electronic dance music movement, Beyoncé will be hosting a Club Renaissance event in Los Angeles this Saturday, December 17, and Sunday, December 18. And like the old raves that influenced her house-and-techno-tinged album, the location will be kept a closely guarded secret. It’s a 21+ event (sorry, Blue Ivy, it’s past your bedtime) and the non-transferrable tickets will be limited to one per person.

While details are secretive, there may be a possibility to get a preview of the rumored stadium tour that Bey’s supposedly been preparing for. Among the rumors are reports that she’s been requiring her crew to forego alcohol and do periodic check-ins to ensure a safe work environment. Since Club Renaissance is an Amazon Music event, though, don’t be surprised if at least one of the performances live streams on the app.

You can get more information here.

Robert Williams Will Make His Season Debut For The Celtics On Friday Against The Magic

The Boston Celtics running out to the best record in the NBA through 29 games at 22-7 has been impressive for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that they’ve done so without their All-Defensive Team center Robert Williams.

Williams has been rehabbing from offseason knee surgery to repair a meniscus injury that he played through in Boston’s run to the Finals a year ago. In his stead, the Celtics have leaned on Al Horford (when healthy), backup Luke Kornet, and small-ball lineups with Blake Griffin and Grant Williams acting as the center. However, there’s no question that a healthy Williams makes a huge impact on raising Boston’s ceiling, particularly on the defensive end, and on Thursday some very positive news emerged on his status.

After recently ramping up his work to scrimmages, Williams will be back on court for the Celtics on Friday as they face the Orlando Magic.

We’ll find out what kind of minutes restriction Williams will be on when Joe Mazzulla talks pregame on Friday, but it’s a big boost for a Celtics team that, while still holding the NBA’s best record, has stumbled just a bit recently, going 1-2 to complete their long road trip. Williams’ return should give the Celtics a bit of a jolt that’s always welcome in the doldrums of the regular season, and Mazzulla can start working out his rotations with one of his key players back in the fold.

Kyle Kuzma Got Hit With Tampering Accusations By Other Players For Saying California Has Nice Weather

The latest name to pop up in Los Angeles Lakers trade rumors is Kyle Kuzma, a former Laker who was sent to the Washington Wizards as part of the trade that led to Russell Westbrook heading to L.A. According to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, the Lakers have reached out and expressed interest in a move that would bring Kuzma back to the team where he started his NBA career.

With out of the way, it sure is funny timing that Kuzma tweeted this on Thursday, isn’t it?

Ok, so, it’s not: The Wizards have back-to-back games against the Clippers and Lakers this weekend. But still, the fact that Kuzma sent out a tweet in which he expressed his love for California did not go unnoticed by a pair of NBA players, as Donovan Mitchell and Trae Young — both of whom seem to be very in touch with the latest trade rumors — accused him of tampering.

Kuzma pointed out that it is not tampering to say nice things about the place where he lives.

Of course, none of this is actually tampering. On the year, Kuzma is averaging 21.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 35 minutes per game while shooting a career-high 46.2 percent from the field.

A Nipsey Hussle Class Is Coming To LMU’s College Of Business, Where He Once Taught A Class Himself

There’s no denying how influential Nipsey Hussle was as a rapper and entrepreneur. His life’s legacy was literally defined by giving back to the local economy and the community of Crenshaw that he called home and the surrounding areas. Now, a college-level course called “The Marathon Continues: Building Brand Through Culture” will be taught around, “The art of branding ‘The Marathon Way’” and “Brand building strategies and tactics that are motivated and driven through cultural influence.”

Taught by Nipsey Hussle’s longtime business partner, David Gross, the course is coming to Los Angeles’ Loyola Marymount University School of Business Administration, an institution where Nipsey Hussle himself was once a professor. “The class will focus on Hussle’s genius and authenticity in his approach to business and life,” Gross wrote on Instagram.

Gross also gave some context surrounding the class that he and Hussle taught in the past and how it has led to this new course:

I gotta give flowers to Mitchell Hamilton, a tenured professor and the head of the Marketing Department at Loyola Marymount’s business school. He reached out to me and Nip in 2017 and asked if we’d teach a class at the business school. He gave us carte blanche, with the caveat that we were authentic and didn’t water anything down because we were in a university environment. The class was a hit, and it lead to a second class the following semester. This was Spring of 2019, so we never got to finish the class. Mitch has reached out to me several times in the following years, extending the opportunity to return and teach another class. He always told me I could teach whatever I wanted if it would both challenge and inspire his students….It’s finally time like to go back this Spring to teach a the class that honors Nip’s enormous legacy, and analyzes how he was able to put a dent in the universe by creating the most resonant brand to come out of the culture #TMC

And while a life-sized wax figure of Hussle just debuted in honor of the rapper in Ohio, an academic class about how his business mind works seems to be a far more compelling way spread the gospel of his legacy.

Nipsey Hussle is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
