Lizzo Used Her People’s Choice Awards Speech To Bring Breonna Taylor’s Mom And Other Female Activists On Stage

During last night’s People’s Choice Awards, Lizzo won Song Of The Year (“About Damn Time”) and People’s Champion — with her speech for the second award making significant news today. The fan-voted event found Lizzo’s Champion award being introduced by her mom, making it all the more special of a moment.

“I’ma be honest, when I first heard about this award, I was on the fence about whether I should accept,” she said. “Because, if I’m the people’s champ, I don’t need a trophy for championing people, you know what I’m saying?”

“I’m here tonight because to be an icon isn’t about how long you’ve had your platform,” Lizzo continued. “Being an icon is what you do with that platform. And ever since the beginning of my career, I’ve used my platform to amplify marginalized voices. I am sharing this honor. Make some noise for the people, y’all. These are all activists and people that I think deserve the spotlight.”

Lizzo greeted a handful of activists, naming each person and their causes, from fighting for Flint, Michingan to have clean drinking water to advocating for indigenous communities. As the introduction progressed, Lizzo and the guests were both brought to tears. She hugged a woman who lost her sister, a teacher who protected students in Uvalde. And, at the end of the lineup, she also included Breonna Taylor’s mother, giving space to women across all fields of champion work.

Christian Bale Transforms Into A Gothic Detective In Netflix’s ‘The Pale Blue Eye’ Trailer

Christian Bale is known for going above and beyond when it comes to physically preparing for his various roles. He will lose weight, gain weight, and even let his nails grow much too long in order to give the performance of a lifetime (or just that month…he’s in a lot of movies). But Bale’s latest transformation is a little more subtle: he has a beard. And a lot of fear behind his eyes!

Bale stars in The Pale Blue Eye, a new Netflix film from director Scott Cooper, director of the equally chilling Antlers. Bale portrays Augustus Landor, a detective who is investigating a mysterious death in one of the scariest places in the world: Upstate New York in the middle of winter. There, he receives help from the famously creepy and dark-minded Edgar Allen Poe.

The movie features an impressive cast including Harry Melling, Gillian Anderson, Timothy Spall, and Robert Duvall. As per the official description:

West Point, 1830. A world-weary detective is hired to discreetly investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case — a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe.

The Pale Blue Eye will get a limited theatrical release on December 23rd, and will be available on Netflix beginning January 6th. Check out the trailer above.

Metro Boomin’s ‘Heroes & Villains’ Captivates By Accentuating His Collaborators’ Best Superpowers

The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow, and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.

Metro Boomin’s Heroes & Villains arrives two years after he secured his second No. 1 album beside longtime collaborator 21 Savage with Savage Mode II. The sequel effort itself arrived four years after 2016’s Savage Mode, a body of work that helped launch 21 Savage into the mainstream spotlight (with the assistance of features alongside Drake and others). With Heroes & Villains, Metro ventures further into the darkest corners of the world. His debut album Not All Heroes Wear Capes dabbled in slight mischief more than it did deviance and malice. It was playful enough thanks to lighter moments like “Only You” with J Balvin and Wizkid as well as “Borrowed Love” with Swae Lee and Wizkid. Savage Mode II embraced the above-the-law mindset and all the mischief, but with a lot of flexing and braggadocious bars courtesy of 21 Savage’s trademark punchlines and infinite Rolodex of threats and warnings. Heroes & Villains welcomes thunder and gloom as it glorifies a world where bad not only occurs, but thrives.

On Heroes & Villains, Metro Boomin is merely trying to weather the storm – that’s at least one way to look at it. The storm in question could be the one 21 Savage and Young Nudy detail on “Umbrella.” A soul sample introduces the song before 21 and Nudy terrorize the grimacing beat. 21 threatens to make the “choppa sing like it’s Adele” while Nudy furthers the agenda by adding, “Switch on the b*tch, finna whoop me a n**** / Think I was his mama when I get done.” The thing about Heroes & Villains is you don’t necessarily know who’s the hero and who’s the villain. As Future raps about turning “into a superhero” on “Superhero,” he returns later in the album to say he “can’t save no hoe” with Don Toliver on “I Can’t Save You (Interlude).” As Metro Boomin the hero and Metro the villain shake hands on the album’s artwork, Heroes & Villains notes that we can be both in the same person. The world certainly needs saving, but from who exactly?

Aside from the album’s thunderous sonic and heroic themes, Heroes & Villains on the surface is another display of Metro’s fine and wide-ranging work. He shines as a conductor that soundtracks 21 Savage’s determined mission for retaliation on “Walk Em Down” as well as The Weeknd’s airy plead to go uninformed about possible infidelity on “Creepin.’” In totality, the flashy “Feel The Fiyaaah” with ASAP Rocky and the late Takeoff exemplifies the album’s brightest moments, while the gloom of Travis Scott and Young Thug’s “Trance” foreshadows the danger that lurks between the drums and hi-hats of Heroes & Villains.

A decade ago, Metro Boomin was a mere upstart in the hip-hop world. Now he’s a greatly respected producer who’s earned the respect of the industry thanks contribution to the career of superstars like Future, Travis Scott, and Young Thug. The beautiful thing about Metro’s rise alongside these artists, and others like 21 Savage, Gunna, and Migos, is that they continued to stay in touch and collaborate regardless of their fame. As Metro helped to soundtrack the stories of the aforementioned rappers, these same artists returned to help the chart-topping producer complete his stories. It started with Not All Heroes Wear Capes and continues with Heroes & Villains. It’s up to you to determine who the heroes and villains are, but one thing’s for sure, they sure know how to work together when needed.

Heroes & Villains is out now via Boominati Worldwide/Republic Worldwide. You can stream it here.

Joe Rogan Is Convinced The Rock Is Using Steroids: ‘Not A F***ing Chance In Hell He’s Clean’

Joe Rogan took a break — at least temporarily — from weighing in on abortion, politics, fentanyl in Halloween candy, and various other topics on which he has proven to have no expertise to talk about something that’s slightly more in his wheelhouse: steroids.

As Mediaite reports, Rogan chatted with Derek — just Derek — the YouTuber behind the popular fitness channel More Plates More Dates, and at some point the conversation inevitably turned to gym candy. “Does the Rock say he’s clean?,” Rogan wanted to know of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who the podcaster described as having a “preposterous physique.”

“He has implied it pretty heavily, but he also doesn’t end up in scenarios where he gets asked point blank,” was Derek’s reply, which seemed to annoy Rogan: “The Rock should come clean right now…. There’s not a f***ing chance in hell he’s clean. Not a chance in hell. As big as the Rock is at 50?” (Rogan, it should be noted, is 55.)

Rogan then had his producer bring up some photos of The Rock so that he and Derek could study and comment on them, which was only slightly awkward. Finally, and ironically, Rogan — a king of misinformation — declared that: “There’s a responsibility that you have to people that are listening to you. And if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s one thing. But if you do talk about it, there’s a responsibility that you have to people that are listening to you. And I think you have to be honest. Which is why I’m honest about it.”

Jimmy Kimmel Offered A Heartwarming Tribute To Herschel Walker And ‘One Of The Most Entertaining Senate Campaigns In The History Of This Country’

The state of Georgia has spoken, and it turns out that the majority of residents don’t want a werewolf, a vampire, or Herschel Walker as their senator (neither does Walker’s son, apparently). While it’s yet another victory for Democrats, it’s also impossible to deny that the former football player’s entire campaign provided a bit of comic relief at a time when we needed it the most. Jimmy Kimmel addressed this very fact on Tuesday night’s show, when he noted:

Even though he’s a beloved local football hero, Herschel Walker hasn’t exactly inspired passion amongst Republican voters. If you go down the list of what their party supposedly values the most — family values: he’s a serial domestic abuser with more kids than a Dave & Buster’s on a Saturday at noon. Charity: He claimed his company gave 15 percent of their profits to charity; three of the four charities listed on his website said he gave nothing, the other said ‘no comment.’ Pro-life? He was Planned Parenthood’s customer of the year I think.

That wasn’t the end of Kimmel’s list, but you get the point. Yet, despite all of this, the host admitted that “as a person who does a show every night, the idea that Herschel Walker won’t be on camera every day is sad to me.” Because what other single individual is going to whip out a toy badge one day and think it actually makes him part of law enforcement, then argue with himself about whether it’s cooler to be a vampire or a werewolf the next day?

It’s for this very reason that Kimmel was not afraid to admit that he’ll miss Walker, and to thank him with a heartfelt tribute to what he described as “one of the most entertaining Senate campaigns in the history of this country,” which he tearfully set to the Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You.”

You can watch the tribute video at the 4:15 mark, or start at the very beginning of the video to see the entire segment.

A Small Detail From ‘The White Lotus’ Season 2 Premiere Could Have Big Implications For The Finale

With The White Lotus season two finale coming up this Sunday, now is a good time to rewatch the first episode of the season, especially the first scene. As a reminder: Daphne (played by Meghann Fahy) talks to two women who have just arrived in Sicily for a vacation. “Oh, I’m so jealous,” she tells them. “We leave in a few hours.” They exchange more pleasantries (“Italy’s just so romantic, you’re going to die”) before Daphne excuses herself to go for one last swim. While in the water, something brushes against her: a floating corpse. We later learn that “other bodies” have been discovered.

How many?

HBO

Here’s who we know it isn’t: Daphne, obviously; White Lotus manager Valentina and recently-engaged employee/beach club exile Rocco (they’re made aware of the bodies), and Italian stereotype Rocco. Everyone else is fair game, including Daphne’s douchebag husband, Cameron (Theo James), and begrudging vacation buddy, Harper (Aubrey Plaza). This opening scene has been examined over and over by The White Lotus viewers with a Columbo-like determination to figure out who dies, but it was only recently when someone noticed a key detail in the background. As noted by Reddit user ambushsabre, “Harper was with Daphne on the beach in the opening scene (or at least her bag was),” along with the visual proof. You can see it for yourself here.

So, Harper was there at the beach — but where is she now? Is that her body in the water, or is she with Cameron, who has been putting the moves on her all season? Of those two options, I lean towards the latter. Daphne doesn’t appear to recognize the body in the water; if the person in the body bag was her husband or friend (or whatever she considers Harper), she wouldn’t loiter to the side as they were being taken away.

hbo

Of course, Harper might be somewhere else, like back in her hotel room not having sex with Ethan (Will Sharpe), but it is intriguing that her bag is next to Daphne. Could it be her in the water? Maybe… unless it’s Greg the Cowboy, or old man Bert and his bandaged noggin, or Lucia’s supposed pimp Alessio. We’ll find out for sure this Sunday.

The 2022 Edition Of Dave Grohl’s ‘Hanukkah Sessions’ Series Will Feature Live Recordings With Beck, Tenacious D, And Others

Dave Grohl and Greg Kurstin are set to return with their “Hanukkah Sessions” recordings for the third year. In 2020, Grohl launched “The Hanukkah Sessions,” which saw him collaborating with Kurstin and delivering covers of eight songs by Jewish musicians. For the first iteration, he covered songs like “F*ck The Pain Away” by Peaches, “Sabotage” by Beastie Boys, and “Hotline Bling” by Drake. The duo brought the series back for a second installment last year, and covered “Blitzkrieg Bop” by The Ramones, “Take The Box” by Amy Winehouse, and “Jump” by Van Halen.

This year, Grohl and Kurstin have collaborated with several of his musician friends for live recordings, instead of the studio versions they’ve gone with previously. The covers were recorded during an intimate, private concert at The Largo, which took place this Monday night (December 5).

Largo shared a peek at the show on Instagram yesterday, a picture of Grohl, Kurstin, Pink, Jack Black, and Karen O. Also featured at this year’s event were Judd Apatow (who hosted the show, a benefit for the Anti-Defamation League) and Beck.

Though the list of songs to be included has not yet been announced, according to Variety (who was present at the concert), Grohl and Karen O performed a cover of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll,” and he also teamed up with Pink for a cover of her hit single, “Get This Party Started.”

The first of the covers is set to arrive via YouTube on December 18, and the covers will continue to release throughout all eight nights of Hanukkah.

‘The Witcher’ Showrunner Has Broken Her Silence On Henry Cavill’s Fan-Saddening Departure From The Show

After Henry Cavill finally made his return as Superman following years of false starts, the actor dropped another equally as huge bombshell on the heels of his Black Adam cameo. He was leaving The Witcher. Cavill revealed that he’d be exiting the Netflix series, which did not go over well with fans and sparked strong reactions, and passing the mantle of Geralt of Rivia to Liam Hemsworth.

The Witcher brouhaha went down in early November, and since then, Netflix and the creative team have been relatively quiet about Cavill’s exit. But with the new spinoff series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, set to drop in the next few weeks, showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich finally addressed the elephant in the room. Via TechRadar:

“It’s a big deal for us, too,” Hissrich admitted when TechRadar mentioned how fans had negatively responded to Cavill’s impending depature. “And that’s the thing – there’s a lot of talk and rumors about and we fully understand why fans are going there.”

However, like a true pro, Hissrich quickly steered the conversation back to Blood Origin, which she understandably doesn’t want to be overshadowed by Cavill’s exit.

“What I will say is please come back for The Witcher season three so that we can continue to do this,” Hissrich said. “Obviously, that [Cavill’s departure] is huge news. But what I don’t want to do is – this has to stay about Blood Origin, Declan [de Barra, Blood Origin‘s showrunner], the cast, and the crew. This is their time in the spotlight.”

In fairness, Hissrich and Netflix are in a tough spot. They’re in the midst of building out a franchise that they hope will be the streaming platform’s Game of Thrones, but their main star just quit after three seasons. That’ll take the wind right out of your sails, and obviously, there’s a huge question mark around whether Hemsworth can right the ship.

The Witcher: Blood Origin premieres December 25 on Netflix.

Drew Barrymore Wants To Remake An Iconic Comedy Film Starring Herself And Cameron Diaz

The world is all about reboots, revivals, and remakes of established content these days, for better or worse. Some of the proposed ideas sound great, like a second Freaky Friday or that random Orphan installment from earlier this year. Other ideas are…..less great.

But one remake that actually seems like it could be good is an updated version of the classic 1987 comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Though this time, instead of Steve Martin and John Candy, it would be Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, and there would probably be some sort of subplot about Ubers or other updated transportation services. The more you think about it, the more it makes sense, right?

Barrymore ran the idea by her friend and former co-star Adam Sandler while the two were chatting on The Drew Barrymore Show. Sandler told the host that he watches her show “all the time,” to which she reminded him, “You helped me get the pilot. You and Cameron [Diaz].”

Of course, after mentioning Diaz, who just recently began acting again, Barrymore gushed about their remake idea. “Her and I did discuss remaking Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and then I was like, ‘Well you know Adam and I talk about that,’” she said. The actress then said that she would want to play Candy’s character Dell, a shower curtain ring salesman (this was the ’80s, mind you). She added, “Well, I also want to play John Candy.”

Sandler is all for the idea, encouraging his 50 First Dates co-star to go for it. “You could do a good Candy,” Sandler replied, “You know who could do Candy the best? [Chris] Farley. He would walk around the office and say lines from Planes, Trains and Automobiles.” Sandler and Farley worked together on Saturday Night Live.

Barrymore and Sandler have made multiple movies together, and the actress even admitted earlier this month on the Chicks in the Office Podcast that it would make her “so happy” to make another movie with Sandler. Maybe they can try for a 51 First Dates or The Wedding Singer sequel too. Why not!

Finneas Made A Thought-Provoking Observation About An Obscure Part Of ‘Family Guy’ Lore

At 2 a.m. in California last night (technically this morning, December 7), Finneas was awake. It seems he was up watching Family Guy or at least had the show on his mind when he tweeted an observation about the long-running animated series: “The family guy house has an enclosed porch. They are literally never in there.”

It turns out that while the sun porch is indeed rarely shown on the show, his claim of the room “literally” never being used isn’t quite true. Finneas isn’t the first person to make this observation, as it’s been the subject of many an internet conversation for years. In 2014, for example, one Stack Exchange user asked if the interior of the porch has ever been on the show. A commenter came through with four examples of episodes that included scenes in that room: 2000’s “Wasted Talent;” 2001’s “Ready, Willing, And Disabled;” 2006’s “Stewie Loves Lois;” and 2010’s “Halloween On Spooner Street.”

On a related note, earlier this year, Finneas and Billie Eilish made an appearance in The Simpsons universe, linking up with the most precocious of the Simpson children in the Disney+ short film When Billie Met Lisa. The Simpsons, by the way, also has a mostly forgotten room of its own.
