Vladimir Putin Is Reportedly ‘Surprised’ Over Russia’s Inadequate Performance As His Military Runs Drastically Low On Ammo

When Vladimir Putin isn’t reportedly pooping all over himself after falling down stairs these days, he’s also apparently freaking out about his underperforming army. Should he really be too shocked? It only seems inevitable that soldiers who are sent with no clear orders wouldn’t ascend toward success, nor does it bode well that tampon instructions are being doled out to new recruits, meaning that medical supplies are low or nonexistent.

However, word has surfaced that Putin is taken aback at his not only afraid that he’ll be killed if he loses this war, but he’s straight-up afraid of the loss itself. That comes according to U.S. National Intelligence Director Avril Haines, who is quoted by NBC News on the ammunition shortage that Putin cannot seem to overcome. Further, Haines reveals that she’s received intel about Putin being genuinely “surprised” at how this war is going for Russia:

“I do think he is becoming more informed of the challenges that the military faces in Russia. But it’s still not clear to us that he has a full picture at this stage of just how challenged they are,” Haines said.

At the same time, Haines notes that U.S. intel’s sources reveal that Putin has been cagey about whether he ever plans to admit that he needs to pull back or altogether pull out of this war. This shouldn’t be too surprising to those watching at home, but it’s surely something that the Ukrainian (and Russian) people do not love to see.

Rosie O’Donnell Has Received The Legendary Tom Cruise Christmas Cake And Posted The Proof

It’s officially that time of the year again. Like a jet-flying elf from the North Pole, Tom Cruise is blanketing Hollywood with his legendary Christmas cake that he’s been gifting celebrity friends for over a decade now. The White Chocolate Coconut Bundt Cake from Doan’s Bakery in Woodland Hills, California is the stuff of legends at this point, and Rosie O’Donnell could not resist gushing that hers has dutifully arrived like clockwork.

“my tommy sent me a coconut cake !! i love that guy,” O’Donnell wrote on Instagram along with a picture of the mythical baked good that hopefully won’t melt the faces of mere mortals like ourselves.

A while back, O’Donnell confirmed to The Jess Cagle Show that she’s been a regular recipient of Cruise’s coconut cake during special occassions, and she doesn’t care what people say, she knows he’s the one remembering those dates. Via Parade:

“He is the only person who never misses my birthday. In knowing him for 25 years now, he has never missed my birthday or an event in my life,” she said, later adding, “A lot of people say to me, it’s just his secretary, but I don’t believe that. I think he knows in early March, ‘Oh, it’s Rosie’s birthday coming up,’ and he sends me something. Every single year for 25 years.”

Thanks to starring in Top Gun: Maverick, Glen Powell is now on the exclusive cake list, and he recently confirmed that the rumors about its deliciousness are true. In fact, Powell’s been on the list for a few years now, and it’s to the point where friends actually pester him if it’s arrived yet. It’s apparently that damn good. Tom Cruise mails a heck of a cake, everybody.

The Best Mixing Rums For Holiday Cocktails, According To Bartenders

Whether you’re hosting parties or you’ve been invited to a gathering, the holiday season is a great time to stock up on spirits. And while bourbon and the various whiskeys are important this time of year, the likes of gin, vodka, tequila, and rum are also fun party favors. Today, specifically, we’re turning our attention to rum.

When it comes to versatile, mixable spirits, it’s difficult to beat rum. The various types of rum include white rum, gold rum, dark rum, spiced rum, navy strength rum, and others. There’s something to fit every palate. The best part? Myriad affordable rums are perfect for your holiday home bar and switching rum for whiskey is an easy way to riff on a classic (eggnog, old fashioned, hot toddy, etc.).

To find some holiday mixing gems, we went to the professionals who bide their time behind the bar. We asked twelve bartenders to tell us their picks for the best rums to mix with this holiday season. Keep scrolling to see their picks.

Ten to One Caribbean Dark Rum

Ten to One Caribbean Dark Rum
Ten to One

Theo Rutherford, drinks educator at Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits in Stamford, Connecticut

ABV: 40%

Average Price: $51.99

The Rum:

When finding rum to mix, I go with rums that are a little sweeter and I typically really like dark rums. In terms of brands that I think have a ton to offer, I like Ten to One. It has the right amount of sweetness, mixed with just a touch of sugar cane funk, with great baking spice that makes me think of winter while hopefully enjoying a cocktail on the beach. Tiki is the obvious way to go with this, especially a Hemingway Daiquiri.

That being said, the dark works really well as a whiskey substitute if someone is a little nervous about whiskey.

Bacardi Superior

Bacardi Superior
Bacardi

Vernice Reyes, bartender at Pívat Cigar Lounge inside of Agua Caliente Casino Cathedral City in Rancho Mirage, California

ABV: 40%

Average Price: $14

The Rum:

The best mixing rum is Bacardi White with the coconut tropical sweetness you can mix this with spices and infuse your holiday cocktail. It is also the best option for the well-known “coquito” cocktail. It’s simple, flavorful, and always inexpensive.

It’s a bottle that belongs on your holiday bar cart.

Flor De Cana 7 Year

Flor De Cana 7 Year
Flor De Cana

Tyler Olson, general manager at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse and The Count Room at Flamingo Las Vegas

ABV: 40%

Average Price: $25.99

The Rum:

Flor De Cana 7 Year can be used in a variety of ways. We infuse it with tropical tea to create a variety of Pirate/ Tiki cocktails. This award-winning rum is known for its flavors of toasted coconut, vanilla beans, dried fruits, and warming, complex finish.

Ron Zacapa 23 Centenario

Ron Zacapa 23 Centenario
Ron Zacapa

Miguel Chambers, bartender at Broken Shaker at Freehand in New York City

ABV: 40%

Average Price: $49.99

The Rum:

Zacapa 23 is an excellent choice for the holiday season. Zacapa 23 neat or served as a smoked old fashioned with notes of cinnamon and star anise is the perfect sipper with a cigar. Besides that, its caramel, vanilla, licorice, dried fruits, and oak works well in most seasonal cocktails.

Brugal 1888

Brugal 1888
Brugal

Gui Jaroschy, partner at Unfiltered Hospitality in Miami

ABV: 40%

Average Price: $45

The Rum:

Brugal 1888 is my favorite rum for holiday drinks. It’s full-bodied and oaky with a touch of sherry which makes it as good an option for sipping neat around the fire as it is for throwing into egg nogs, holiday punches, or hot buttered rums.

Bumbu Crème Rum

Bumbu Crème Rum
Bumbu

Cosimo Bruno, beverage curator at Daxton Hotel in Birmingham, Michigan

ABV: 15%

Average Price: $42

The Rum:

Bumbu Crème Rum is the ultimate blend of select spices, rich and decadent dairy cream, and Bumbu rum. This manifestation is nearly irresistible in a cocktail and will make your holiday evenings merry and bright.

Koloa Kaua’I Coconut Rum

Koloa Kaua’I Coconut Rum
Koloa Kaua’I

Della Norton, food and beverage manager of The Bellmoor Inn and Spa in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

ABV: 40%

Average Price: $38

The Rum:

I prefer coconut rum if I am going to drink it. Koloa Kaua’i reminds me of the islands. This rum you can sip or make the perfect pina colada. Bold flavors of vanilla, tropical fruits, and toasted coconut make this rum shine in any seasonal cocktail.

Pampero Rum Aniversario

Pampero Rum Aniversario
Pampero

Cody Kennedy, bartender at Juniper Preserve in Bend, Oregon

ABV: 40%

Average Price: $33

The Rum:

For the holidays, I’d choose a Venezuelan rum like Pampero Rum Aniversario. What flavors make it great? Pampero is fairly sweet with vanilla beans, butterscotch, and a nutty sweetness. It helps that it’s also bargain-priced. What cocktails does it mix into well? Holiday cocktails, punches, eggnogs, old fashioneds, and other drinks.

I’m from south Florida, so rum is kind of second nature for me.

Santa Teresa 1796

Santa Teresa 1796
Santa Teresa

Nicholas Bennett, beverage director at Porchlight in New York City

ABV: 40%

Average Price: $49.99

The Rum:

If I’m mixing up a drink with rum this holiday season I am using Santa Teresa 1796. Sure, this is a very nice sipping rum and will make a great after-dinner nightcap, but it also makes a great egg nog. It has a spicy, oaky flavor that compliments the spices that make egg nog so wonderful during the holiday season.

Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva

Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva
Diplomatico

Matt Burnett, bar manager at Bellwether House & Folklore Restaurant in Savannah, Georgia

ABV: 40%

Average Price: $35.99

The Rum:

Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is my pick. This is obviously a great rum to sip neat, but its flavor profile plays perfectly with the holidays. Dark fruit, baking spices, butter, and tobacco. I mean come on. Whip up a hot buttered rum or mix it with your favorite vermouth and amaro and grab a seat by the fire.

Kraken Black Spiced Rum

Kraken Black Spiced Rum
Kraken

Gabby Senne, bar supervisor at Sideways Lounge in Buellton, California

ABV: 47%

Average Price: $18.99

The Rum:

My go-to rum for mixing is Kraken. It is a higher-proof rum with great flavors, I like using the higher-proof rums for mixing especially with something really sweet because the extra alcohol helps cut through that sweetness for a nice and balanced drink. Kraken is great in eggnog or anything with pineapple.

Foursquare Probitas

Foursquare Probitas
Foursquare

Jack Beguedou, bartender at Proof 192 in Omaha, Nebraska

ABV: 47%

Average Price: $36

The Rum:

Foursquare is my go-to. This is because of the higher-proof and bold flavors, this is the perfect rum for mixing and blending cocktails. If I had to pick only one, it would be Foursquare Probitas. This blended white rum is filled with vanilla, citrus fruits, and molasses. It’s a great mixing rum for the holiday season.

George Harrison’s elaborate prank on Phil Collins may be the funniest joke in rock history

This article originally appeared on 12.01.21

Beatle George Harrison was pigeon-holed as the “Quiet Beatle,” but the youngest member of the Fab Four had an acerbic, dry sense of humor that was as sharp as the rest of his bandmates.

He gave great performances in the musical comedy classics, “A Hard Days Night” and “Help!” while holding his own during The Beatles’ notoriously anarchic press conferences. After he left the band in 1970, in addition to his musical career, he would produce the 1979 Monty Python classic, “The Life of Brian.”

Harrison clearly didn’t lose his sense of humor for the rest of his life. Shortly before his death in 2001, he played an elaborate prank on Phil Collins that shows how the “Here Comes the Sun” singer would go the extra mile for a laugh.

In 1970, Harrison was recording his first solo record and arguably the best by a Beatle, “All things Must Pass.” The session for the song, “The Art of Dying” featured former Beatle Ringo Starr on drums, keyboard legend Billy Preston on keys, virtuoso Eric Clapton on guitar, and was produced by the notorious Phil Spector.

Harrison wanted a conga player for the session, so Ringo’s chauffeur reached out to Phil Collins’ manager. At the time, Collins was a relative unknown who was about to join Genesis, a band that would bring him worldwide stardom.

The 18-year-old Collins was starstruck playing on a session with two former Beatles, so he played extra hard in rehearsals, resulting in blood blisters on both hands.

“Anyway, after about two hours of this, Phil Spector says, ‘Okay congas, you play this time.’ And I’d had my mic off, so everybody laughed, but my hands were shot,” Collins told Express.

“And just after that they all disappeared – someone said they were watching TV or something – and I was told I could go,” after that, Collins was relieved of his duties and told to go home. A few months later, Collins bought the massive triple album in the record shop and was devastated to learn he’d been edited out of the song.

“There must be some mistake! Collins thought. “But it’s a different version of the song, and I’m not on it.”

Some thirty years later, Collins bought the home of Formula One driver Jackie Stewart, a close friend of Harrison. Stewart mentioned to Collins that Harrison was remixing “All Things Must Pass” for a rerelease.

“And he said, ‘You were on it, weren’t you?’ And I said, ‘Well I was there,”‘ Collins recalled.

Two days later, a tape was delivered from Harrison to Collins with a note that read: “Could this be you?” Collins continued: “I rush off and listen to it, and straight away I recognize it.” It was a recording of “The Art of Dying.”

“Suddenly the congas come in – too loud and just awful,” Collins was devastated, then as the end of the take, Harrison can be heard saying, “Hey, Phil, can we try another without the conga player?”

Collins was devastated, to say the least.

A while later, Stewart calls Collins and puts Harrison on the line. “‘Did you get the tape?’ Harrison asked. “I now realize I was fired by a Beatle,” Collins sighed. The two changed the subject, but a few minutes later, Harrison couldn’t stop laughing.

“Don’t worry, it was a piss-take. I got Ray Cooper to play really badly and we dubbed it on,” Harrison admitted. “Thought you’d like it!” So, Harrison had an entire recording session with a conga player who he asked to play poorly, just to pull one over on Collins.

If you’re in the mood for another of rock’s greatest pranks. The story of “The Ring” told by Beastie Boys’ Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz shared in “Beastie Boys Story” is another great example of someone going to incredible lengths just for a laugh.

The story revolves around the late Beasties’ rapper Adam “MCA” Yach, his bandmate Horovitz, and a very creepy ring given to him by a fan backstage at a concert.

10 ways kids appear to be acting naughty but actually aren’t.

This article originally appeared on 07.19.17

When we recognize kids’ unwelcome behaviors as reactions to environmental conditions, developmental phases, or our own actions, we can respond proactively, and with compassion.

Here are 10 ways kids may seem like they’re acting “naughty” but really aren’t. And what parents can do to help.

1. They can’t control their impulses.

Ever say to your kid, “Don’t throw that!” and they throw it anyway?

Research suggests the brain regions involved in self-control are immature at birth and don’t fully mature until the end of adolescence, which explains why developing self-control is a “long, slow process.”

A recent survey revealed many parents assume children can do things at earlier ages than child-development experts know to be true. For example, 56% of parents felt that children under the age of 3 should be able to resist the desire to do something forbidden whereas most children don’t master this skill until age 3 and a half or 4.

What parents can do: Reminding ourselves that kids can’t always manage impulses (because their brains aren’t fully developed) can inspire gentler reactions to their behavior.

2. They experience overstimulation.

We take our kids to Target, the park, and their sister’s play in a single morning and inevitably see meltdowns, hyperactivity, or outright resistance. Jam-packed schedules, overstimulation, and exhaustion are hallmarks of modern family life.

Research suggests that 28% of Americans “always feel rushed” and 45% report having “no excess time.” Kim John Payne, author of “Simplicity Parenting,” argues that children experience a “cumulative stress reaction” from too much enrichment, activity, choice, and toys. He asserts that kids need tons of “down time” to balance their “up time.”

What parents can do: When we build in plenty of quiet time, playtime, and rest time, children’s behavior often improves dramatically.

3. Kids’ physical needs affect their mood.

Ever been “hangry” or completely out of patience because you didn’t get enough sleep? Little kids are affected tenfold by such “core conditions” of being tired, hungry, thirsty, over-sugared, or sick.

Kids’ ability to manage emotions and behavior is greatly diminished when they’re tired. Many parents also notice a sharp change in children’s behavior about an hour before meals, if they woke up in the night, or if they are coming down with an illness.

What parents can do: Kids can’t always communicate or “help themselves” to a snack, a Tylenol, water, or a nap like adults can. Help them through routines and prep for when that schedule might get thrown off.

Image via iStock.

4. They can’t tame their expression of big feelings.

As adults, we’ve been taught to tame and hide our big emotions, often by stuffing them, displacing them, or distracting from them. Kids can’t do that yet.

What parents can do: Early-childhood educator Janet Lansbury has a great phrase for when kids display powerful feelings such as screaming, yelling, or crying. She suggests that parents “let feelings be” by not reacting or punishing kids when they express powerful emotions. (Psst: “Jane the Virgin” actor Justin Baldoni has some tips on parenting through his daughter’s grocery store meltdown.)

5. Kids have a developmental need for tons of movement.

“Sit still!” “Stop chasing your brother around the table!” “Stop sword fighting with those pieces of cardboard!” “Stop jumping off the couch!”

Kids have a developmental need for tons of movement. The need to spend time outside, ride bikes and scooters, do rough-and-tumble play, crawl under things, swing from things, jump off things, and race around things.

What parents can do: Instead of calling a child “bad” when they’re acting energetic, it may be better to organize a quick trip to the playground or a stroll around the block.

6. They’re defiant.

Every 40- and 50-degree day resulted in an argument at one family’s home. A first-grader insisted that it was warm enough to wear shorts while mom said the temperature called for pants. Erik Erikson’s model posits that toddlers try to do things for themselves and that preschoolers take initiative and carry out their own plans.

What parents can do: Even though it’s annoying when a child picks your tomatoes while they’re still green, cuts their own hair, or makes a fort with eight freshly-washed sheets, they’re doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing — trying to carry out their own plans, make their own decisions, and become their own little independent people. Understanding this and letting them try is key.

7. Sometimes even their best traits can trip them up.

It happens to all of us — our biggest strengths often reflect our weaknesses. Maybe we’re incredibly focused, but can’t transition very easily. Maybe we’re intuitive and sensitive but take on other people’s negative moods like a sponge.

Kids are similar: They may be driven in school but have difficulty coping when they mess up (e.g., yelling when they make a mistake). They may be cautious and safe but resistant to new activities (e.g., refusing to go to baseball practice). They may live in the moment but aren’t that organized (e.g., letting their bedroom floor become covered with toys).

What parents can do: Recognizing when a child’s unwelcome behaviors are really the flip side of their strengths — just like ours — can help us react with more understanding.

Image via iStock.

8. Kids have a fierce need for play.

Your kid paints her face with yogurt, wants you to chase her and “catch her” when you’re trying to brush her teeth, or puts on daddy’s shoes instead of her own when you’re racing out the door. Some of kids’ seemingly “bad” behaviors are what John Gottman calls “bids” for you to play with them.

Kids love to be silly and goofy. They delight in the connection that comes from shared laughter and love the elements of novelty, surprise, and excitement.

What parents can do: Play often takes extra time and therefore gets in the way of parents’ own timelines and agendas, which may look like resistance and naughtiness even when it’s not. When parents build lots of playtime into the day, kids don’t need to beg for it so hard when you’re trying to get them out the door.

9. They are hyperaware and react to parents’ moods.

Multiple research studies on emotional contagion have found that it only takes milliseconds for emotions like enthusiasm and joy, as well as sadness, fear, and anger, to pass from person to person, and this often occurs without either person realizing it. Kids especially pick up on their parents’ moods. If we are stressed, distracted, down, or always on the verge of frustrated, kids emulate these moods. When we are peaceful and grounded, kids model off that instead.

What parents can do: Check in with yourself before getting frustrated with your child for feeling what they’re feeling. Their behavior could be modeled after your own tone and emotion.

10. They struggle to respond to inconsistent limits.

At one baseball game, you buy your kid M&Ms. At the next, you say, “No, it’ll ruin your dinner,” and your kid screams and whines. One night you read your kids five books, but the next you insist you only have time to read one, and they beg for more. One night you ask your child, “What do you want for dinner?” and the next night you say, “We’re having lasagna, you can’t have anything different,” and your kids protest the incongruence.

When parents are inconsistent with limits, it naturally sets off kids’ frustration and invites whining, crying, or yelling.

What parents can do: Just like adults, kids want (and need) to know what to expect. Any effort toward being 100% consistent with boundaries, limits, and routines will seriously improve children’s behavior.

Candace Cameron Bure’s ‘Traditional Marriage’ Remarks Have Already Prompted One Actor To Quit The Great American Family Network

As Candace Cameron Bure geared up to promote her tenure as the new star and chief creative officer of the newly formed Great American Family network, she sparked a wave of controversy by confirming that the channel would only feature “traditional marriage.” (Read: No gay couples.) It was a jarring but not entirely surprising stance from Bure who, like her brother Kirk Cameron, has well-known evangelical beliefs. Even her longtime Full House co-star, Jodie Sweetin, threw shade at Bure despite the two recently working together on the Netflix revival series Fuller House.

However, just as the controversy seemed to die down, actor Neal Bledsoe has announced his resignation from Great American Family. Like Bure, Bledsoe has been a fixture in Hallmark holiday movies and was wooed over to Great American Family where he’s now starred in two films. In a lengthy statement to Variety, Bledsoe made it very clear that he cannot continue to work with a company that actively discriminates against the LGBTQIA+ community:

As someone who struggled as a young man with our society’s extremely narrow definition of masculinity, it was their community that provided me with refuge and a guiding light when my life felt lost. And now, if I cannot stand up for that community in their time of need, my debt to them means nothing. So, I want to be very clear: my support for the LGBTQIA+ community is unconditional – nothing is worth my silence or their ability to live and love freely in a world that we are lucky enough to share with them.

“I hope GAF will change, but until everyone can be represented in their films with pride, my choice is clear,” Bledsoe wrote in the closing paragraph. “I look forward to working with creators who put no limits on the stories we tell and follow through on their message of values with open arms.”
