10 ways kids appear to be acting naughty but actually aren’t.

This article originally appeared on 07.19.17

When we recognize kids’ unwelcome behaviors as reactions to environmental conditions, developmental phases, or our own actions, we can respond proactively, and with compassion.

Here are 10 ways kids may seem like they’re acting “naughty” but really aren’t. And what parents can do to help.

1. They can’t control their impulses.

Ever say to your kid, “Don’t throw that!” and they throw it anyway?

Research suggests the brain regions involved in self-control are immature at birth and don’t fully mature until the end of adolescence, which explains why developing self-control is a “long, slow process.”

A recent survey revealed many parents assume children can do things at earlier ages than child-development experts know to be true. For example, 56% of parents felt that children under the age of 3 should be able to resist the desire to do something forbidden whereas most children don’t master this skill until age 3 and a half or 4.

What parents can do: Reminding ourselves that kids can’t always manage impulses (because their brains aren’t fully developed) can inspire gentler reactions to their behavior.

2. They experience overstimulation.

We take our kids to Target, the park, and their sister’s play in a single morning and inevitably see meltdowns, hyperactivity, or outright resistance. Jam-packed schedules, overstimulation, and exhaustion are hallmarks of modern family life.

Research suggests that 28% of Americans “always feel rushed” and 45% report having “no excess time.” Kim John Payne, author of “Simplicity Parenting,” argues that children experience a “cumulative stress reaction” from too much enrichment, activity, choice, and toys. He asserts that kids need tons of “down time” to balance their “up time.”

What parents can do: When we build in plenty of quiet time, playtime, and rest time, children’s behavior often improves dramatically.

3. Kids’ physical needs affect their mood.

Ever been “hangry” or completely out of patience because you didn’t get enough sleep? Little kids are affected tenfold by such “core conditions” of being tired, hungry, thirsty, over-sugared, or sick.

Kids’ ability to manage emotions and behavior is greatly diminished when they’re tired. Many parents also notice a sharp change in children’s behavior about an hour before meals, if they woke up in the night, or if they are coming down with an illness.

What parents can do: Kids can’t always communicate or “help themselves” to a snack, a Tylenol, water, or a nap like adults can. Help them through routines and prep for when that schedule might get thrown off.

4. They can’t tame their expression of big feelings.

As adults, we’ve been taught to tame and hide our big emotions, often by stuffing them, displacing them, or distracting from them. Kids can’t do that yet.

What parents can do: Early-childhood educator Janet Lansbury has a great phrase for when kids display powerful feelings such as screaming, yelling, or crying. She suggests that parents “let feelings be” by not reacting or punishing kids when they express powerful emotions. (Psst: “Jane the Virgin” actor Justin Baldoni has some tips on parenting through his daughter’s grocery store meltdown.)

5. Kids have a developmental need for tons of movement.

“Sit still!” “Stop chasing your brother around the table!” “Stop sword fighting with those pieces of cardboard!” “Stop jumping off the couch!”

Kids have a developmental need for tons of movement. The need to spend time outside, ride bikes and scooters, do rough-and-tumble play, crawl under things, swing from things, jump off things, and race around things.

What parents can do: Instead of calling a child “bad” when they’re acting energetic, it may be better to organize a quick trip to the playground or a stroll around the block.

6. They’re defiant.

Every 40- and 50-degree day resulted in an argument at one family’s home. A first-grader insisted that it was warm enough to wear shorts while mom said the temperature called for pants. Erik Erikson’s model posits that toddlers try to do things for themselves and that preschoolers take initiative and carry out their own plans.

What parents can do: Even though it’s annoying when a child picks your tomatoes while they’re still green, cuts their own hair, or makes a fort with eight freshly-washed sheets, they’re doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing — trying to carry out their own plans, make their own decisions, and become their own little independent people. Understanding this and letting them try is key.

7. Sometimes even their best traits can trip them up.

It happens to all of us — our biggest strengths often reflect our weaknesses. Maybe we’re incredibly focused, but can’t transition very easily. Maybe we’re intuitive and sensitive but take on other people’s negative moods like a sponge.

Kids are similar: They may be driven in school but have difficulty coping when they mess up (e.g., yelling when they make a mistake). They may be cautious and safe but resistant to new activities (e.g., refusing to go to baseball practice). They may live in the moment but aren’t that organized (e.g., letting their bedroom floor become covered with toys).

What parents can do: Recognizing when a child’s unwelcome behaviors are really the flip side of their strengths — just like ours — can help us react with more understanding.

8. Kids have a fierce need for play.

Your kid paints her face with yogurt, wants you to chase her and “catch her” when you’re trying to brush her teeth, or puts on daddy’s shoes instead of her own when you’re racing out the door. Some of kids’ seemingly “bad” behaviors are what John Gottman calls “bids” for you to play with them.

Kids love to be silly and goofy. They delight in the connection that comes from shared laughter and love the elements of novelty, surprise, and excitement.

What parents can do: Play often takes extra time and therefore gets in the way of parents’ own timelines and agendas, which may look like resistance and naughtiness even when it’s not. When parents build lots of playtime into the day, kids don’t need to beg for it so hard when you’re trying to get them out the door.

9. They are hyperaware and react to parents’ moods.

Multiple research studies on emotional contagion have found that it only takes milliseconds for emotions like enthusiasm and joy, as well as sadness, fear, and anger, to pass from person to person, and this often occurs without either person realizing it. Kids especially pick up on their parents’ moods. If we are stressed, distracted, down, or always on the verge of frustrated, kids emulate these moods. When we are peaceful and grounded, kids model off that instead.

What parents can do: Check in with yourself before getting frustrated with your child for feeling what they’re feeling. Their behavior could be modeled after your own tone and emotion.

10. They struggle to respond to inconsistent limits.

At one baseball game, you buy your kid M&Ms. At the next, you say, “No, it’ll ruin your dinner,” and your kid screams and whines. One night you read your kids five books, but the next you insist you only have time to read one, and they beg for more. One night you ask your child, “What do you want for dinner?” and the next night you say, “We’re having lasagna, you can’t have anything different,” and your kids protest the incongruence.

When parents are inconsistent with limits, it naturally sets off kids’ frustration and invites whining, crying, or yelling.

What parents can do: Just like adults, kids want (and need) to know what to expect. Any effort toward being 100% consistent with boundaries, limits, and routines will seriously improve children’s behavior.

Candace Cameron Bure’s ‘Traditional Marriage’ Remarks Have Already Prompted One Actor To Quit The Great American Family Network

As Candace Cameron Bure geared up to promote her tenure as the new star and chief creative officer of the newly formed Great American Family network, she sparked a wave of controversy by confirming that the channel would only feature “traditional marriage.” (Read: No gay couples.) It was a jarring but not entirely surprising stance from Bure who, like her brother Kirk Cameron, has well-known evangelical beliefs. Even her longtime Full House co-star, Jodie Sweetin, threw shade at Bure despite the two recently working together on the Netflix revival series Fuller House.

However, just as the controversy seemed to die down, actor Neal Bledsoe has announced his resignation from Great American Family. Like Bure, Bledsoe has been a fixture in Hallmark holiday movies and was wooed over to Great American Family where he’s now starred in two films. In a lengthy statement to Variety, Bledsoe made it very clear that he cannot continue to work with a company that actively discriminates against the LGBTQIA+ community:

As someone who struggled as a young man with our society’s extremely narrow definition of masculinity, it was their community that provided me with refuge and a guiding light when my life felt lost. And now, if I cannot stand up for that community in their time of need, my debt to them means nothing. So, I want to be very clear: my support for the LGBTQIA+ community is unconditional – nothing is worth my silence or their ability to live and love freely in a world that we are lucky enough to share with them.

“I hope GAF will change, but until everyone can be represented in their films with pride, my choice is clear,” Bledsoe wrote in the closing paragraph. “I look forward to working with creators who put no limits on the stories we tell and follow through on their message of values with open arms.”

The Best K-Pop Christmas Songs

‘Tis the season to be jolly, indeed. And while many are turning up and blasting Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” or Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me,” some of us are mixing the Christmas festivities with some of the best K-Pop Christmas song in the mix.

In case you are looking to spice things up a bit and want to bring in some Hallyu cheer into your holiday playlist this year, then you’ve come to the right place. Whether you want a simple lighthearted Christmas track to sit down and listen to, or an upbeat dance track to throw it back, there’s a K-Pop song for that. So without further ado, here are some of the best K-Pop Christmas songs sung by some of K-Pop’s finest acts.

NMIXX – “Funky Glitter Christmas”

JYP Entertainment’s youngest girl group caps off their 2022 debut year with a special Christmas song that can get you into the holiday spirit. Compared to their prior releases, this Christmas special isn’t experimental at all but rather a simple, cheerful holiday song that’ll get you to bob your head to the beat.

EXO – “The First Snow”

In Korean culture, it’s considered utterly romantic if you experience the first snowfall of the season with someone you love. In this case, the members of EXO reminisce about a former lover and wonder how they’re doing as the first snow of the season falls. The acoustic R&B instrumental uplifts the heartbreaking lyrics of loss and regret but still serves a perfect bittersweet love song.

The Boyz – “Christmassy!”

Forget about prom. Have you ever been asked to go to a Christmas party? Well, if you consider yourself The B (The Boyz’s fanclub name), then I’m pretty sure your fantasies of living the Y/N life as all members of The Boyz are fighting for your attention as they show and sing about clever ways to ask you out to a Christmas party.

TWICE – “Merry & Happy”

There’s something about TWICE that immediately brings a smile to my face whenever they release wholesome content like this. Holding a Secret Santa and filming the reveals and unboxings as part of the music video are peak Christmas spirit. The music video just showed how much of a bond the members have with each other and showcased the true meaning of Christmas.

Jimin of BTS – “Christmas Love”

Jimin’s angelic voice suits the Christmas season. But the only unfortunate thing missing from all of this is a music video.

Stray Kids – “Christmas EveL”

“Feliz navidad, feliz navidad, feliz navidad but Felix, never bad.” Arguably one of the best Christmas songs to come out of K-Pop in the last few years was from Stray Kids. Not only did this song have everyone banging their heads to the beat, but it also got TikTok shaking their jingle bells as well.

Super Junior – “Santa U Are The One”

Back in the day, SM Entertainment thrived off having compilation albums that would include original holiday and winter-themed songs sung by its artists. Dating back to 2011, and considered the last time the label did a winter album, Super Junior released an all-English, giddy Christmas song that was meant to be enjoyed by all.

GOT7 – “Confession Song”

We all know Christmas is the season of giving. But it’s not always about giving presents or other materialistic things. Sometimes it’s your heart. GOT7’s “Confession Song” is a love letter to the listener of the group confessing their love. In the music video, however, the group plays wingmen (or matchmaker) to help two students confess their love for one another.

Girls’ Generation-TTS – “Dear Santa”

One of Girls’ Generation’s most iconic sub-units releases a Christmas ballad that turns into a jolly pop song that brightens up your spirits. “Dear Santa” sung by GG’s three power vocalists (Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun) sing about romanticizing Christmas as a season to yearn about being loved and also wanting to profess love to another.

TVXQ – “Magic Castle”

Perhaps one of the most classic titles on this list comes from one of the legendary K-Pop acts of all time — TVXQ. Known to have strong vocal abilities in the industry, the former quintet swoons the listeners in their fairytale serenade in a winter wonderland setting.

Eddie Vedder Covers U2, But It’s Borat Roasting Kanye West And Joe Biden That Steals The Show At Kennedy Center Honors

The 45th Annual Kennedy Center Honors took place in Washington D.C. last night, honoring lifetime achievements for the arts with President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden in the building. This year’s honorees included U2, soul music legend Gladys Knight, Christian pop singer Amy Grant, blockbuster actor George Clooney, and Cuban composer Tania León. Eddie Vedder honored U2 with renditions of two of their songs, but it was an appearance from Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat that raised eye brows and low key stole the show by roasting Kanye West and then some friendly ribbing of Biden.

Vedder sang both U2’s “Elevation” and “One” and there was also a tribute to Knight with a performance from Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow, CeCe Wynans, and BeBe Wynans. But Borat, let’s talk about Borat, because the (fake) Kazakh television reporter got super spicy. “I know the president of US and A is here,” Borat said, according to The Guardian. “Where are you, Mr Trump?” The audience roared, before Borat kept playing along saying how he thought the President looked different than he remembered. “But I see you have a new wife. Wawaweewah! She is very erotic. I must look away before I get a Bono.”

Soon, the audience response became a bit split when Borat joked about antisemitism, namely as it relates to Kanye West. “Before I proceed, I will say I am very upset about the antisemitism in US and A. It not fair. Kazakhstan is No 1 Jew-crushing nation. Stop stealing our hobby. Stop the steal! Stop the steal!” The joke was received tepidly, but Borat continued: “Your Kanye, he tried to move to Kazakhstan and even changed his name to Kazakhstanye West. But we said: No, he too antisemitic, even for us.”

It says something about the state of American arts culture, when Kanye jokes and his despicable behavior became a topic of conversation at an otherwise prestigious arts ceremony. And it threatened to take away the shine from honorees like U2. But actor Sean Penn tried to keep the focus on the honorees, praising U2 as “four scrappy Dublin punks” and “great musical poets of the ages.”

DDG Is ‘In Love With A Mermaid’ In His Latest Video And We All Know Who It Is

DDG gushed on The Breakfast Club last month that he’s “never been with nobody that’s really motivated me like she do.” He was referring to his girlfriend, Halle Bailey, who admitted she was “for sure” in love with DDG in August. Their romance was on full tilt in the Michigan rapper’s lustful video for “If I Want You,” an August single from September’s It’s Not Me It’s You.

The 12-track received the deluxe treatment in October, but DDG promised fans he wasn’t done releasing music. “I’m dropping new music every Wednesday starting tomorrow..,” he captioned an Instagram post teasing “Vegan” on November 22. “Forbes List” followed last Wednesday, November 30, and then DDG bent the rules and dropped “In Love With A Mermaid” over the weekend.

Of course, Bailey is starring as Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid due in theaters May 26, 2023 — a casting that caught DDG by suprise. “I didn’t know people was this racist — I didn’t know this was a thing,” he told the Bootleg Kev Podcast in September. “I thought this sh*t was gone already.”

On “In Love With A Mermaid,” DDG showers Bailey with the love she should have received from the world for the groundbreaking role. The video finds DDG standing before a microphone. The colorfully lit Christmas tree in the background juxtaposes the slow-burning ode, as DDG smoothly promises to “love you from Thursday to Thursday / Not a human, I’m in love with a mermaid” and even admits he “can’t wait till we have kids.”

People Have Thoughts About Who Should Be In The Next ‘The White Lotus’

Season two of The White Lotus comes to a chaotic close next week, which means that while we will no longer get to see Aubrey Plaza’s perfectly timed facial expressions, we will be one step closer to another rollercoaster season featuring miserable vacationers and their beautifully picturesque hotel!

The hit anthology series was renewed for a third season earlier this year, so there is even more madness to come. Details about season three have been sparse, but we do know that it will take place in another one of the iconic White Lotus hotels, probably on some luxurious island or remote cabin somewhere that just conveniently doesn’t have any cell service.

Season one took place in Hawaii, while season two took a new crew to Sicily. Of course, the one constant (besides the titular hotel) is Jennifer Coolidge, who will hopefully be on board for season three. Maybe it will take place in a colder climate this time?

Since we don’t have any details for the next season, Twitter users have taken it upon themselves to cast their own third season with various ensembles from previous shows. Honestly, most of these would make for some great television. How do you think the Roy family would handle that kind of situation? What kind of drama would Julie Cooper cook up? And who will be the next cast member to have so much gratuitous nudity? There is so much to be explored here! Here are some potentially great options for season three:

The White Lotus airs on Sundays on HBO.

Justin Verlander Is Joining The Mets On A 2-Year, $86 Million Deal

With Jacob deGrom going to Texas, the New York Mets found themselves with a massive hole in their starting rotation to plug and did just that on Monday when word broke that Justin Verlander was leaving Houston for New York.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported the Mets had agreed to a two-year, $86 million deal with a “vesting third-year option” to bring the soon to be 40-year-old ace to Queens.

That’s obviously a massive commitment to a pitcher entering his 40s, but Verlander is coming off another Cy Young winning season in which he led the majors with a 1.75 ERA and a 0.829 WHIP. The three-time Cy Young award winner (and 2011 AL MVP) will join Max Scherzer at the top of the Mets rotation that will continue to boast two of baseball’s best starters, even after seeing deGrom walk. The question, of course, will be whether Verlander’s health will hold up after Tommy John surgery cost him the 2021 season, but he certainly didn’t show signs of losing anything in his first year back in 2022.

After falling short in the Wild Card, the Mets clearly had ideas on how to upgrade their roster and Verlander is the first big piece, but few expect New York to be done making significant acquisitions.
