Daddy Yankee, Kenia Os, and Danny Ocean Won Their First MTV Europe Music Awards

The MTV Europe Music Awards took place last night (November 13) in Düsseldorf, Germany. Many Latin acts won their first MTV EMAs trophies, including reggaeton pioneer Daddy Yankee and rising artists Kenia Os and Danny Ocean.

Something very inclusive about the MTV Europe Music Awards is that the music of Latin America is celebrated. The region is divided into separate categories so that more artists across different Latin American countries are recognized.

In the Best Caribbean Act category, artists from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic were nominated. Daddy Yankee, who announced his impending retirement with his Legendaddy album, triumphed over Bad Bunny, Rauw Alejandro, and Myke Towers. Natti Natasha represented the Dominican Republic in the category.

In the Best Latin American North Act category, many of the top acts in Mexico competed for the prize. Kenia Os, who recently dropped her K23 album, won against fellow pop star Danna Paola, Kevin Kaarl, Natanael Cano, and Santa Fe Klan. She will tour the US for the first time next year with her K23 Tour.

The Best Latin American Central Central category was dominated by Colombian acts. Karol G, Feid, Manuel Turizo, and Camilo were competing the award. The were bested by the sole Venezuelan artist in the category, Danny Ocean. After releasing a second part of his @DannOcean album last week, he will tour the US for the first time next year.

The Best Latin American South Central category featured all Argentine artists. Tini won the award for a second time against Bizarrap, Duki, María Becerra, and Tiago PZK. Manu Gavassi took home the award for Best Brazilian Act. Brazilian superstar Anitta emerged victorious in the overall Best Latin Act category.

Pete Davidson nailed why you can be mentally ill and in a healthy relationship

This story originally appeared on 05.25.18

Singer Ariana Grande and “Saturday Night Live” cast member Pete Davidson were dating back in May of 2018.

Neither star had confirmed the relationship outright, but their reps weren’t pushing back on reports claiming the two had linked up either. The singer and comedian’s playful interactions on Instagram certainly suggested to fans the romance was budding.

While many celebrated the news, it inevitably came with a side of backlash too. Some of the criticism, however, crossed an unfortunate line.

Trolls began pointing to Davidson’s history of mental illness to suggest he couldn’t be in a healthy relationship.

The comedian felt it necessary to shut that down. Fast.

“Normally, I wouldn’t comment on something like this cause like, fuck you,” Davidson wrote in a note he shared to his Instagram story. “But [I’ve] been hearing a lot of ‘people with BPD [Borderline Personality Disorder] can’t be in relationships’ talk. I just wanna let you know that’s not true.”

Davidson said he was diagnosed with BPD in 2016 after having lived through a “nightmare” year that involved rehab and grappling with the ups and downs of diagnosis. The comedian has also spoken openly about living with depression.

“Just because someone has a mental illness does not mean they can’t be happy and in a relationship,” Davidson wrote. “It also doesn’t mean that person makes the relationship toxic.”

After noting there are many life-changing treatments available for people like him, Davidson emphasized the importance of combating stigmas associated with mental illness.

“I just think it’s fucked up to stigmatize people as crazy and say that they are unable to do stuff that anyone can do,” he wrote. “It’s not their fault and it’s the wrong way for people to look at things.”

Davidson has been praised by mental health advocates for using his celebrity to humanize his illnesses — and poking fun at himself along the way.

In one “SNL” segment that aired shortly after he went public with his diagnoses, the comedian spoke candidly about his mental illness with “Weekend Update” host Colin Jost.

“If you’re in the cast of a late-night comedy show, it might help if they, you know, do more of your comedy sketches,” Davidson joked about ways others can help him get through his dark times. “I was born depressed, but it might make me feel better if I was on TV more.”

Like many comedians, Davidson often uses brash and cringeworthy lines as a form of therapy to overcome trauma. His father died on 9/11, for instance, and the comedian’s folded the devastating loss into his routine with a comedic spin.

Laughter may not be the best medicine, but it certainly can help.

Davidson ended his message on Instagram clarifying why he decided to speak up in the first place.

“I’m simply writing this because I want everyone out there who has an illness to know that it’s not true [that you can’t be mentally ill and be in a relationship] and that anyone who says that is ill and full of shit,” he wrote. “Mental illness is not a joke; it’s a real thing.”

“For all those struggling I want you to know that I love you and I understand you and it is going to be OK,” Davidson concluded. “That’s all. Love to everyone else.”

Kristen Bell advises those with depression: ‘Don’t be fooled’ by Instagram

This story originally appeared on 5.2.2018

Actress Kristen Bell lives with anxiety and depression.

Maybe you wouldn’t have guessed it scanning through her work on IMDb. She’s the voice behind Anna in “Frozen,” after all; the star of a former hit show called “The Good Place,” for goodness sake.

Those seem like, um … happy roles. Right?

That’s why Bell is speaking out again about her mental illness.

The media we consume — on our phones, in the magazine aisle, even in Bell’s own delightful TV series and films — rarely convey an accurate depiction of reality. And Bell is advising anyone else living with mental illness not to be fooled.

In a video produced by the Child Mind Institute, Bell opened up about what she’d like to tell her younger self.

“What I would say to my younger self is don’t be fooled by this game of perfection that humans play,” she said. “Because Instagram and magazines and TV shows — they strive for a certain aesthetic, and everything looks so beautiful, and people seem like they don’t have any problems. But everyone’s human.”

She continued (emphasis added):

“Everyone has problems. Everyone feels yucky on the inside sometimes. And you deserve to feel just as beautiful on the days that you wear no makeup, and the days you don’t shower, and the days that you feel like you’re depressed. And you have an obligation to take care of yourself from the inside out, because that’s how you can truly feel beautiful.”

In recent years, Bell has spoken up candidly about her own mental health in hopes it can benefit others.

The actress was diagnosed with anxiety and depression when she was 18 years old. As she explained to “Off Camera with Sam Jones” in 2016, her mom had been the one to fill her in on their family’s history with mental illness.

Bell started taking medication to help — and has no qualms about it. “I still take it today; I have no shame in that,” Bell explained. “You would never deny a diabetic his insulin, but for some reason when someone needs a serotonin inhibitor, they’re immediately ‘crazy’ or something.”

Her anxiety and depression, Bell noted, is probably the biggest differentiation between her own life and the characters she portrays on screen.

Depression and anxiety affect millions of Americans of all ages. But despite their prevalence, stigma surrounding mental illness — dissuading people from reaching out, for instance, or shaming them for taking medication — remains a major barrier stopping people from accessing the resources they need.

Bell wants every kid to know they deserve to feel better.

“Never feel embarrassed or ashamed about who you are,” Bell advises viewers in her new PSA. “Never feel embarrassed or ashamed about the uniqueness that is you, because there are people out there to help. And we’re all just human. And you can do it.”

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw Rihanna continue her comeback with more new music and Brockhampton continue to count down to the end. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape and Pop Life newsletters. Also find our Uproxx HQ Spotify playlist, which is updated weekly with the best new music, at the end of this post.

Rihanna — “Born Again”

When Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” was announced, there were rumors that it wouldn’t be her only song for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, and that another one, “Born Again,” was on the way. The rumor has now been confirmed, as last week brought “Born Again,” a heartfelt ballad on which she sings of the late Chadwick Boseman, “I’d give my heart to this place / I’d give my whole soul and whatever it takes, never run away / And I’d relive this just to see your face again / I know that you’d do the same, born again.”

Brockhampton — “The Ending”

The end is near for Brockhampton, as the group’s final album, The Family, is set for this month. Their latest preview of it, “The Ending,” is under two minutes long but full of sentiment, with Kevin Abstract reflecting, “I’m thinking ‘Man, one day we all gon’ be some superstars’ / And this is way back before I had a credit card / and this is way back when I ain’t have a debit card / and this is way back when we all still prayed to God.”

Bruce Springsteen — “Turn Back The Hands Of Time”

The Boss is of course best known for his iconic original songs but he’s had fun with covers, too: He dropped the covers album We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions in 2006 and now he’s back with another collection of other folks’ songs: Only The Strong Survive. The album dropped a few days ago and when it did, he shared a visual for “Turn Back The Hands Of Time,” a soulful and rousing rendition of Tyrone Davis’ 1970 hit.

GloRilla — “Nut Quick”

GloRilla has had herself a year in 2022, but as it comes to an end, the rising rapper isn’t done yet. Last week, she came through with “Nut Quick,” on which she puts a disappointing male suitor on blast: “He thought I would be crazy after sex, but I ain’t nothin’ / He could’ve been my favorite sneaky link, but he just nut quick.”

Kim Petras — “If Jesus Was A Rockstar”

Petras is in the midst of a career high-point: Her and Sam Smith’s “Unholy” was recently the No. 1 song in the country. Now’s a great time to ride that wave and get some more new music out there, which she did last week with “If Jesus Was A Rockstar,” a vulnerable and upbeat pop-rock number.

Nas — “Thun”

Nas continued his King’s Disease series with King’s Disease III, on which he also continued his long-running beef with Jay-Z. On “Thun,” he raps, “No beef or rivals, they playin’ ‘Ether’ on Tidal / Brothers can do anythin’ when they decide to / In a Range Rover, dissectin’ bars from ‘Takeover’ / Sometimes I text Hova like, “N****, this ain’t over”, laughin’.”

Joe Jonas and Khalid — “Not Alone”

Joe Jonas has a supporting role in the upcoming biographical war movie Devotion and that’s not the only way he got involved in the film. He also provided “Not Alone,” an emotional piano ballad made alongside Khalid that plays over the end credits.

Fleet Foxes — “A Sky Like I’ve Never Seen” Feat. Tim Bernardes

Fleet Foxes went on tour earlier this year and they brought Brazilian singer/guitarist Tim Bernardes with them to open. Now, the two have come together on “A Sky Like I’ve Never Seen,” an expansive new tune for the film Wildcat.

Fivio Foreign and Rvssian — “1 On 3”

Fivio only needed about 90 seconds to make an impact on his latest tune, “1 On 3.” Uproxx’s Alex Gonzalez notes of the tune, “Drill rapper Fivio Foreign teams up with Latin music producer Rvssian to deliver scorching bars over a drill beat with elements of Latin horns. The song clocks in at under two minutes, but Fivio does not miss a beat on Rvssian‘s invigorating track.”

Run The Jewels and Bomba Estéreo — “Nunca Mirar Hacia Atrás (Bomba Estéreo’s Version)”

El-P and Killer Mike just dropped a neat project: RTJ Cu4tro, on which they got some Latin artist to remix songs from 2020’s RTJ4. Among the highlights is a Bomba Estéreo re-work of “Never Look Back,” which has been re-titled “Nunca Mirar Hacia Atrás” and gives the song a more tropical slant.

Three Virginia Football Players Were Shot And Killed By A Former Walk-On

The University of Virginia suffered the latest shooting tragedy on a college campus late Sunday night, when a former walk-on football player, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., shot and killed three current football players and injured two other students.

The shooting occurred on a school bus returning from an off-campus field trip to see a play in Washington, D.C., with the first call coming in at 10:16 p.m. and police arriving on the scene at 10:30 p.m. Two of the players were found dead at the scene, with the third pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.

Jones was at large for much of Monday morning before being brought into custody during the university’s press conference, with police chief Tim Longo learning he had been apprehended as he was providing an update to the media.

University president Jim Ryan confirmed the deaths of football players Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis, and D’Sean Perry. Ryan withheld the names of the two other victims, one of whom is in good condition and the other is in critical condition, for privacy reasons. Ryan also noted that Jones is currently a student but has not been a member of the football team for more than a year. Jones has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony.

Anitta Celebrated One Year Since The Release Of Her Breakthrough Hit ‘Envolver’: ‘Just Grateful!’

Anitta has enjoyed a breakthrough year thanks to the success of the song “Envolver.” On Friday night (November 11), the Brazilian superstar celebrated the one-year anniversary of the global hit’s release.

In November of last year, Anitta released the sexy music video for “Envolver.” In the alluring reggaeton romp, she sang about taking control in the bedroom. In the video, Anitta manifested that hot-and-heavy attraction through choreography. Earlier in the year, Anitta’s dance move where she twerks to the ground while looking like she’s doing a push-up went viral. That drove the song’s success to new heights.

In July, Anitta was awarded a Guinness World Record for becoming the first solo Latin artist to reach No. 1 on Spotify with “Envolver.” The song has over 430 million streams on Spotify. At last night’s MTV Europe Music Awards, Anitta won in the Best Latin Act category against the likes of Bad Bunny, Shakira, Rosalía, and Becky G.

Anitta kept her gratitude short and sweet in an Instagram post. “1 year of ‘Envolver.’ Just grateful!” she wrote. The post included videos of her recording the song and of her signature dance move that helped the song go viral.

Anitta will host the 2022 Latin Grammy Awards on November 17 alongside Luis Fonsi, Thalia, and Laura Pausini. She has been nominated for two awards, including Record Of The Year for “Envolver.”

Anitta is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

DJ Khaled Had A Silk Pillow Under His Shoes During A Miami Heat Game And It Led To Many Jokes

The Miami Heat beat the Charlotte Hornets in back-to-back games, but DJ Khaled emerged as the preeminent winner from Saturday’s matchup in Miami. Khaled sat courtside in his unreleased “We The Best” Crimson Bliss Air Jordan 5s. The sneakers alone weren’t the main attraction, though. Khaled rested his feet on a color-coordinated silk pillow with “WE THE BEST” stitched on it.

“I just went over to ask him, ‘DJ Khaled, why the pillow?’ And he said, ‘These shoes are exclusive. They are not even out yet,’” sideline reporter Ashley Shahahmadi said on the Bally Sports South broadcast. “They are We The Best and Air Jordan, so he said they cannot touch any floors because they are new edition and we gotta keep ’em that way for now.”

Khaled’s new colorway with Nike will be available to the public on November 28 for $225, and his efforts to create buzz worked flawlessly. Heat All-Star Jimmy Butler joked that sitting out the final minute of Miami’s win was “great” because “I got to take my shoes off, put them on my pillow like DJ Khaled was over there doing.”

Butler’s teammate and fellow All-Star Bam Adebayo was spotted rocking a pair, and Khaled was willing to look past Adebayo letting them touch the pavement before November 28.

The Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers’ mascots cleverly recreated the moment, too.

Check out Khaled’s posts about his Jordan 5s below.

Lil Baby Now Has His Own Day In His Hometown Of Atlanta Thanks To A Proclamation From The City

Lil Baby has become one of Atlanta rap’s brightest rising stars in recent years and now, the city has honored his success by declaring November 13 Dominique “Lil Baby” Jones Day. The city presented the proclamation declaring it Lil Baby Day during a ceremony on Sunday (November 13), presenting the rapper with a plaque acknowledging both his role as a “musical ambassador” for Atlanta and his philanthropic efforts in the city.

Earlier this year, Lil Baby was given the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at Black Music Action Coalition’s second annual Music in Action Awards Gala after launching a jobs program and a $150,000 scholarship for young people in Atlanta. For the last three years, he’s hosted a back-to-school backpack giveaway, and last year, he gave away bikes for kids in Atlanta, refurbished a basketball court, and even bought out a local Foot Locker’s entire stock to share with the families of his hometown.

Lil Baby joined rap peers such as fellow Atlanta natives Gunna and Lil Nas X, Nas, and Travis Scott in being honored by his hometown. He’s been having a stellar year lately, releasing his third album It’s Only Me last month, putting out a documentary based on his life, and receiving a songwriting award from ASCAP.
