Drake And 21 Savage Premiere Their ‘Jimmy Cooks’ Video And Announce Their Joint Album, ‘Her Loss’

On top of a music video for “Jimmy Cooks,” which dropped earlier today, fans are getting treated to another treat from Drake and 21 Savage. Today, the two have revealed that they will end the month by dropping a collaborative album, Her Loss.

The title and release date were revealed in the “Jimmy Cooks” video.

Over the years, Drake and 21 have collaborated several times. “Jimmy Cooks” from Drake’s Honestly, Nevermind album, the two collaborated on Drake’s “Knife Talk” from Certfied Lover Boy, “Mr. Right Now” from 21 and Metro Boomin’s Savage Mode II album, “Sneakin’” from Drake’s More Life.

Not much else is known about the collaborative album, however, In an interview with Haute Living from earlier this year, 21 talked about what to expect from other music he is working on.

“I’m really just trying to figure it out now,” he said. “I go to the studio every day; that’s how I get in my zone. Everything is still in the initial stages, but I do try to make all my albums sound unique, so this one is going to be different for sure. I don’t want to sound like anybody else.”

He also noted that he will be “freestyling, not putting things down on paper.”

Check out the video for “Jimmy Cooks” above.

Her Loss is out 10/28

Shaq Will Be ‘Disappointed’ In Joel Embiid This Year If He Isn’t The Second Unanimous MVP In NBA History

There are high expectations for Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers this season. Even though they started the year 0-2 and Embiid is working his way into playing shape, Philly is a popular pick to have the most wins in the Eastern Conference during the regular season and Embiid’s name is expected to be in the MVP conversation all year long.

One such person who expects a big year for Embiid is Shaquille O’Neal. On a recent edition of “The Big Podcast with Shaq,” the big man laid out his expectation for Embiid, and let’s just say it won’t be easy for him to obtain.

“Yeah, but he needs to look like it, he needs to walk like it, talk like it, act like it, and play like it,” O’Neal said. “Listen, we know you can shoot the jumper, but when you got a guy small on you, you got to take advantage. Like, when you’re seven foot, and you’re further away from the basket, ok, if the show goes in, it’s cool, but the percentages of it going all the time, it’s not going to be high. If you’re closer to the basket, you could double your percentage, it’s easy.

Shaq went on to say that Embiid is going to average 25 or 26 points per game, but argues if he gets down low a few times, that’ll lead to “6-8 extra points, and then, if you’re averaged 34, 35,” then he is going to win MVP.

“But hey, hopefully he picks it up,” O’Neal said. “Cause if I was playing, and I got beat two years in a row, I’m coming in the third year like, ‘Ok, y’all don’t think I’m MVP? Watch this.’ So, if he doesn’t get unanimous MVP, I’ll be disappointed.”

Exactly one person in NBA history — Steph Curry in 2015-16 — has ever won the MVP award unanimously, although Shaq and LeBron James have both come one vote short of earning that honor.

Magic Johnson Is Reportedly In Talks To Buy A Stake In The Raiders

Magic Johnson’s found a way to stick around the world of sports through his ownership of several teams. The former Los Angeles Lakers superstar has ownership stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, and LAFC, which has led to a few championships getting added to the five NBA titles he won as a player.

A new report indicates that Johnson and a team of investors are eyeing up an NFL team to add to his portfolio. According to Liz Hoffman and Reed Albergotti of Semafor, Johnson is in talks to purchase a stake of the Las Vegas Raiders for “a price that could set a new record for sports deals.”

Johnson has been assembling a team of investors in recent weeks for a minority slice of the Raiders, which is majority owned by the family of the late Al Davis, the people said. One of them said the group was conducting due diligence with the team. A deal hasn’t been finalized and could still fall apart.

The Raiders were previously in Los Angeles from 1982-1994, a period of time that coincided with Johnson suiting up for the Lakers. After returning to their previous home, Oakland, in 1995, the Raiders moved to Vegas ahead of the 2020 campaign. Currently, the franchise’s controlling owner is Al Davis’ son, Mark, while several others have ownership stakes.

It is unclear how large of a stake Johnson would purchase in the team if this goes through. The record amount paid for an American sports team is $4.65 billion, which a group forked over to purchase the Denver Broncos earlier this year.

Alex Jones Is Begging A Connecticut Judge To Toss The Nearly $1 Billion Verdict Against Him

When Alex Jones learned he’d lost another massive Sandy Hook case — while filming an episode of InfoWars — he seemed to go into a fugue state. The conspiracy theorist fist-bumped and cheered as each charge was read and the money he owed kept piling up, eventually adding up to an astronomical sum. He even seemed to mock the families who had sued him, charging, “’Do these people actually think they’re getting any of this money?’”But now he’s starting to take it more seriously.

As per AP News, Jones filed paperwork on Friday requesting that the Connecticut judge who ordered him to pay a jaw-dropping fee toss it altogether. In the filing, Jones’ lawyers argued that the judge’s pre-trial rules resulted in “a substantial miscarriage of justice.” They also argued that the sum was simply too much, writing that “the amount of the compensatory damages award exceeds any rational relationship to the evidence offered at trial.”

The lawyer for the 15 plaintiffs in the lawsuit, meanwhile, is planning to file a brief opposing Jones’ request.

Alas, Jones’ legal worries are far from over. On top of the nearly $50 million he was ordered to pay after a Texas trial in August — and the $965 million from the one in Connecticut — a third trial, also in Texas, is set to unfold later this year. The New England trial wasn’t quite as chaotic as the one in the Lone Star state, but it had its moments.

Islam Makhachev Submitted Charles Oliveira To Become The UFC Undisputed Lightweight Champion

The UFC’s lightweight division has a new undisputed champion. Islam Makhachev (23-1-0), the Khabib Nurmagomedov trainee whose rapid ascent in the division led to him getting a title shot on Saturday, defeated Charles Oliveira (33-9-0) via submission during UFC 280 at Ethiad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

The first round went to Makhachev, whose size and physicality presented problems for Oliveira. After tagging him with a punch early on in the round, the pair went to the ground and battled. While Oliveira was able to get a few shots in on his opponent, Makhachev won the round.

In the second round, the usually fearless Oliveira showed a rare timidness, and Makhachev capitalized in a big way. He was eventually able to get the fight back onto the ground and lock in an arm-triangle choke, and while Oliveira has won more fights by submission than anyone else in UFC history, the tables were turned and Makhachev got a finish 3:16 into the round.

The win marks the first time Makhachev holds the distinction of being a champion in the UFC, and he’s made clear that his next target is another champion. After the fight, Makhachev called out featherweight champion and the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, Alexander Volkanovski.

Should these two fight, it appears likely it would happen at UFC 284 in Perth on Feb. 11, 2023.

All The Details About DVSN’s Upcoming Album, ‘Working On My Karma’

DVSN will close out the month of October with their fourth studio album, Working On My Karma. The album will feature their single, “If I Get Caught,” an anthem that listeners have described as “toxic.”

In a recent interview with Complex, DVSN said that the album will cover a wide range of emotions, leading to a journey of growth.

“Pride comes before the fall,” said Daniel Daley, one-half of DVSN. “And [then there’s] accountability and remorse, growth, reflection, and taking a long, good, hard look in the mirror, you know? Maybe it’s even getting lost for a second and trying to medicate it through some other things that aren’t good. Maybe I’m going out and I’m trying to just have sex through the fact that I already screwed up. All the different areas this stuff can take you, we’re trying to make a point of covering how that goes on this album. We want this to be at least the beginning of the growth, if things are needed to grow.

So far, DVSN has released the singles “If I Get Caught,” “Don’t Take Your Love,” and the Jagged Edge-assisted “What’s Up.” In another interview with RatedRnB, the band and the album’s collaborators refuted the label of “toxic” and said they aim to portray all the parts of a relationship honestly, including the messy parts.

“We wanted to do something that would delve deeper into the ups and downs of being an artist in a relationship — and what men go through in relationships in general,” said producer Bryan Michael-Cox “There’s the part where you get your ego broken. There’s a part where you fall in love. There’s all these different elements.”

Working On My Karma is out 10/28 via OVO Sound and Warner Records. Pre-save it here.

DVSN is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Matthew Perry Went To Some Truly Above-And-Beyond Lengths To Coax Julia Roberts Into Guest Starring On ‘Friends’

Julia Roberts has finally been doing some TV of late, getting raves for Homecoming and this year’s Nixon saga Gaslit. But for ages she didn’t do it, at least not after becoming a star. (She’s one of a whole slew of familiar faces who guested on Miami Vice in the ‘80s.) It took a lot to entice her to the small screen, as Matthew Perry discovered a quarter century ago when he wanted her to play his love interest on a star-studded double episode of Friends.

Perry has a new memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, in which he details both his long stint on one of the most enduring sitcoms of the ‘90s and his terrifying struggles with drug addiction, which he says he just barely survived. On a much, much more lighthearted note, there was that time he helped get the star of Pretty Woman to appear the 1996 episode “The One After the Superbowl, Part 2.”

“Julia had been offered the post-Super Bowl episode in season 2 and she would only do the show if she could be in my story line,” Perry wrote, in an excerpt published by The Times U.K. (as caught by Entertainment Weekly). “Let me say that again — she would only do the show if she could be in my story line. (Was I having a good year or what?) But first, I had to woo her.”

At first, Perry tried a more traditional route: He sent her roses. But she demanded something else, something more specific, something more difficult: She wanted him to explain quantum physics to her. So he did what we all do when Julia Roberts asks us to explain quantum physics: He hit the books.

The following day, I sent her a paper all about wave-particle duality and the uncertainty principle and entanglement, and only some of it was metaphorical,” Perry wrote. “Not only did Julia agree to do the show, but she also sent me a gift: bagels — lots and lots of bagels. Sure, why not? It was Julia f*cking Roberts.”

They quickly developed a fast friendship — partly via fax, this being 1996 — and soon enough, she was playing Chandler Bing’s former classmate, whom he humiliated as a child. They reunite and seem to hit it off, or at least Chandler thinks they did…

The onscreen romance led to an off-screen one as well, although Perry wound up being the one to call it off, perhaps prematurely.

“Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me,” Perry wrote. “I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unloveable. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts. She might have considered herself slumming it with a TV guy, and TV guy was now breaking up with her. I can’t begin to describe the look of confusion on her face.”

But at least they’ll always have his quantum physics paper. And some faxes.

A simple ‘test’ can help identify potentially abusive partners early in a relationship.

This article originally appeared on 02.11.19

Most abusers don’t start their relationships by hitting their partners. That’s why early warning signs are vital to recognize.

I know two women who recently left abusive partners. Both men seemed sweet and likable—even gentle—each time I saw them. Both had some lovely qualities as people and even as partners. And both turned out to be controlling, increasingly abusive partners behind closed doors.

The thing about domestic violence is that most people don’t enter into relationships with someone who abuses them from the get go. It’s often like the analogy of the frog in boiling water. If you place a frog into a pot of boiling water, it’ll jump right out. But if you put it in a cool pot and gradually increase the temperature, the frog won’t recognize that it’s being slowly cooked until it’s too late.

Abuse usually comes on gradually, with plenty of opportunity to manipulate and forgive and justify the water getting warmer. That’s why many stay in abusive relationships far longer than they should.

A domestic violence counselor suggests a simple test to help identify potential abusers early in a relationship.

Rob Andrews is a domestic violence counselor in Australia. He told ABC News that he advises people to use what he calls the “No Test” to identify potential red flags early on in a relationship.

“The No Test is basically to watch out for the way your partner responds the first time you change your mind or say no,” Andrews said.

“While expressing disappointment is OK, it’s not the same as annoyed. Annoyed is ‘how dare you,’ a sign of ownership or entitlement.”

Ownership, entitlement, control—these are red flags that often lead to increasingly abusive behavior. And though women can definitely be abusers, the reality is that women are much more likely to be the victims of domestic violence and male abusers tend to be more dangerous to their partners.

“A lot of the women who will present to services will see themselves as part of the problem,” Andrews said. “They’ll ask themselves why they’re always attracted to abusive men, blame themselves for not being assertive enough, blame themselves for pushing their partner’s buttons, causing their anger.”

“With the No Test, we’re not trying to give women knowledge that they didn’t already know,” he said, “but when they see it in black and white in front of them like that, they realize they of course have the right to say no, that they aren’t to blame.”

Andrews describes our patriarchal history as “the nut of the problem.”

Andrews said that some people erroneously tell women that they should just be more assertive with their partners, letting them know they won’t stand for controlling or abusive behavior, but that’s not always the best tack to take.

“Being assertive with a man who’s threatening to bash you is not a very good idea,” he said. “It almost comes from what I’d call ‘deficit thinking,’ that somehow these women need to be trained up so that the people won’t abuse them. The only person who can stop the abuse is the person who is doing the abusing.”

Andrews works with men who are struggling with their own behavior and want to change. He has them think about what kind of man they really want to be and work with them to align their behavior with that vision.

“I hear a lot of people saying how it’s so hard for men now, it’s all so confusing,” he said. “It’s very easy to be a man. Just be polite and respectful to people, it’s not that difficult really.”

“But in saying that,” he added, “we are to some extent dealing with 2,000 years of history of women being a second-class citizen. That’s the nut of the problem and we’ve got to keep chipping away at it.”

Report: The NBA Thought About Relegating Tanking Teams To The G League Before Deciding That’s A Bad Idea

Adam Silver is not a fan of tanking. This is one of the constants from his time as the NBA’s commissioner — Silver does not like when teams are purposely uncompetitive in an effort to increase their odds in the upcoming NBA Draft Lottery. And in a recent meeting between Silver and employees of the Phoenix Suns, the commissioner apparently floated one example of how seriously the league takes the issue.

According to Baxter Holmes of ESPN, Silver claimed that tanking has sparked “hundreds” of meetings and expressed that the NBA is “going to be paying particular attention to the issue this year.” The 2023 NBA Draft is viewed as a potentially all-time great draft, with a pair of players at the top in Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson who are viewed as franchise-changing prospects.

An extreme way to try and change this, per Silver, is the adaptation of a concept that exists in European soccer: promotion and relegation. And ultimately, Silver expressed that using the G League like this would be a bad idea for the NBA.

“It would so disrupt our business model,” Silver said, per Holmes. “And even if you took two teams up from the G League, they wouldn’t be equipped to compete in the NBA.”

It is funny to imagine a scenario where the NBA, so desperate to get rid of tanking, replaces the Los Angeles Lakers with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants or something like that. At the same time, that exact, plausible scenario is why this will never happen, but regardless, if Silver is throwing out promotion and relegation as the sort of idea the NBA would consider, it seems like a safe bet that something big is coming down the line.
