Childless people over 50 are honestly reflecting on whether they made the right decision

This article originally appeared on 02.08.22

People who decide not to have children are often unfairly judged by those who chose a different life path. People with children can be especially judgmental to women who’ve decided to opt out of motherhood.

“You will regret it!” is one of the most common phrases lobbed at those who choose to remain childless. Why do people think they’ll have such awful regrets? Because they often say they’ll wind up “lonely and sad” when they’re older.

They also say that life without children is without purpose and that when the childless get older they’ll have no one to take care of them. One of the most patronizing critiques thrown at childless women is that they will never “feel complete” unless they have a child.

However, a lot of these critiques say more about the person doling them out than the person who decides to remain childless. Maybe, just maybe, their life is fulfilling enough without having to reproduce. Maybe, just maybe, they can have a life full of purpose without caring for any offspring.

Maybe the question should be: What’s lacking in your life that you need a child to feel complete?

Studies show that some people regret being childless when they get older, but they’re in the minority. An Australian researcher found that a quarter of child-free women came to regret the decision once they were past child-bearing age and began contemplating old age alone.

People revealed the reasons they’ve decided to be childless in an article by The Upshot. The top answers were the desire for more leisure time, the need to find a partner and the inability to afford child care. A big reason that many women decide not to have children is that motherhood feels like more of a choice these days, instead of a foregone conclusion as it was in previous decades.

Reddit user u/ADreamyNightOwl asked a “serious” question about being childless to the AskReddit subforum and received a lot of honest answers. They asked “People over 50 that chose to be childfree, do you regret your decision? Why or why not?”

The people who responded are overwhelmingly happy with their decision not to have children. A surprising number said they felt positive about their decision because they thought they’d be a lousy parent. Others said they were happy to have been able to enjoy more free time than their friends and family members who had kids.

Here are some of the best responses to the Askreddit question.

1. Never had any desire.

“I explain it to people like this – you know that feeling you get where you just can’t wait to teach your kid how to play baseball? or whatever it is you want to share with them? I don’t have that. Its basically a lack of parental instinct. Having children was never something I aspired to. My SO is the same way.

“Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against children. And I get really angry at people who harm them or mistreat them. I just never wanted my own.” — IBeTrippin

2. No desire. No regrets.

“Nope. It was never something I wanted. No regrets.” — BornaCrone

3. Mixed feelings.

“I have mixed feelings. I don’t care much for children and I think it would have been disastrous for us to have them. I was also able to retire at 52. Pretty sure that wouldn’t have happened with kids. So yeah, absolutely the right decision.
But I love my family and I do wonder what it would be like to have my own, to teach my child the things I know and not to be without someone who cares about me at the time of my death.

“But again, absolutely the right decision and at 55 I’m very happy NOT to have them. This is reinforced every time I’m exposed to other people’s kids.” — ProfessorOzone

4. They never visit.

“My wife worked at a nursing home for years. Imagine seeing for years that over 95% of old people never have family visit. Till they die and people want a piece of the pie. This when I learned that the whole ‘well who is gonna visit you or take care of you when you’re older’ line is complete bullshit. We decided to not have kids ever after that. Made great friends and saw the world. No regrets.” — joevilla1369

5. It wasn’t an option.

“I don’t necessarily regret not having them, but I regret the fact that I wasn’t in a healthy enough relationship where I felt I COULD have children. I regret not being stronger to leave the abuse earlier, if I had been stronger, I think maybe I could have had the choice at least. So yeah… I have regrets.” — MaerakiStudioMe

6. Grandkids are cooler.

“No. I knew what I was getting into when I agreed to marry my husband. He had two sons from his first marriage and a vasectomy. He was worried because I was so young (comparatively, he’s 10 years older). I did think it over seriously and concluded that a life with him compared to a life without him but (perhaps!) with a baby I didn’t even have yet was what I wanted. It worked out for us, we’ve been together for 26 years. As a bonus I have 9 grandchildren. All the fun without the work of the raising!” — Zublor

7. I’d be a bad parent.

“Not one bit. I have never believed that I would be a good parent. I have a short temper, and while I don’t think I would have been physically abusive, my words and tone of voice would be harsh in a very similar way to my own father. I wasn’t happy growing up with that kind parent and I wouldn’t want to subject any child to that kind of parenting.”
— Videoman7189

8. I’d rather be the cool aunt and uncle.

“No and I found a partner who feels the same. We are the cool aunt and uncle.” — laudinum

9. Loneliness is underrated.

“54 yrs.old. I’ve lived the past 30 years alone. Presently my dog and I are chillin’ in a nice hotel on a spur of the moment vacation. I’d maybe be a grandfather by now?! I can’t imagine what it would be like to have family. I picture a life lived more “normally” sometimes. All sunshine and roses, white picket fence, etc. but I realize real life isn’t like that. No I don’t regret being childfree or wifefree for that matter. My life can be boring at times but then I look back at all the drama that comes with relationships and think I’ve dodged a bullet. I spent 20 years trying to find a wife to start a family. Then I realized the clock had run out, so fuck it, all the money I’d saved for my future family would be spent on myself. Hmmmmm…what do I want to buy myself for Christmas?” — Hermits_Truth

10. No diaper changes and no regrets.

“Nope. I never had the urge to change diapers or lose sleep, free time and most of my earnings. Other people’s kids are great. Mostly because they are other people’s. When people ask ‘Who will take care of you when you’re old’ I tell them that when I’m 75 I will adopt a 40-year-old.” — fwubglubbel

11. Zero desire.

“I’m 55 (F) and never wanted children. I just don’t much like them, and 20+ years of motherhood sounded (and still sounds) like a prison sentence. Maternal af when it comes to cats and dogs, but small humans? No chance.

“And I’m very happy to be childless. Cannot imagine my life any other way.” — GrowlKitty

12. D.I.N.K.

“Dual income no kids = great lifestyle!” — EggOntheRun

13. Some regrets

“Over 50 and child free. My only regret is that my wife would have been a great mother, and sometimes I feel like I deprived her of that, even though we both agreed we didn’t want kids. Sometimes I wonder if I pushed her into that decision. She works with the elderly every day and sees a lot of lonely folks so it gets to her sometimes. I was always afraid I’d screw up the parenting thing, so I was never really interested in the idea. I’m a loner by nature though.” — Johnny-Virgil

‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Has Set An IMAX Record Already, So People Must Really Want To See It (Despite The Drama)

Despite the various on-and-off-set dramatics and some subpar reviews, people do want to see Don’t Worry Darling. Olivia Wilde’s thriller will be getting the IMAX treatment on September 19th with a live-streamed Q&A at various theaters around the country, which Florence Pugh will not be attending.

Ahead of the premiere, the movie sold out 21 Imax locations in 24 hours, becoming the fastest-selling IMAX premiere to date, according to a press release from the company. There were more than 13,000 tickets sold for the premiere event, while more than 15 additional locations are on their way to also being sold out.

This is most likely due to the parade of Harry Styles fans who are planning on seeing the pop star in his first lead role. Styles has been promoting the movie while simultaneously playing a 15-night residency at Madison Square Garden while dressed like a twirling baton.

The world has had its eyes on Don’t Worry Darling ever since the movie began filming amidst the pandemic. Rumors then swirled after Wilde had a messy split with her partner, Jason Sudeikis, and allegedly soon embarked on a relationship with Styles. The reported tension between Pugh and Wilde has been awkward ,as the two have been barely interacting while promoting the film (and that’s partially due to Shia LaBeouf) with Chris Pine being used as a buffer. But, Styles did not spit on him after all. The man deserves some more Star Trek movies after this!

Don’t Worry Darling hits theaters on September 23rd.

Michael Sheen’s Impromptu Pump-Up Speech For The Welsh Soccer Team Will Have You Ready To Run Through A Wall

Wales is headed to the World Cup for the first time since 1958, a monumental accomplishment for the soccer-mad nation. Wales will be in group play alongside England, the United States, and Iran, opening the competition against the U.S. on November 21.

With Gareth Bale at the helm, the Welsh have a legitimate superstar but are otherwise underdogs to advance out of the group, with the U.S. and England as the favorites. Still, after an impressive qualifying run that saw them go through the playoffs, defeating Ukraine 1-0 in the playoff final, they have to feel like they have a punchers chance to make a little noise.

In case the squad isn’t fired up enough by going to the World Cup for the first time in 64 years, Welsh native Michael Sheen delivered an impromptu hype speech on a TV program that had everyone on set ready to fight for Wales once he reached the crescendo and brought the speech home.

The best part of this is watching the reaction of everyone else around him as they can’t help but get pumped up by his speech themselves. I don’t think the host imagined it would be this good when he asked for it, as he ended it saying he’s never felt more Welsh, while Micah Richards looks like he’s ready to go play 90 minutes for the Welsh squad immediately.

If Wales doesn’t fly Sheen into Qatar for their first match to get the boys fired up, I’m not sure what they’re doing, because while motivational speeches and forced efforts to hype teams up can sometimes land flat, this is genuinely incredible and I would like to go run through a wall now for Wales, a place I have never been.

Funk Flex Debuts An Unreleased DMX Song After Challenging Swizz Beatz To Dig Into X’s Vault

DMX’s passing in April 2021 shook the hip-hop world to its core, especially after seeing him look so jovial in his 2020 Verzuz battle with Snoop Dogg. While the legendary rapper no longer exists on this plane, he left behind his classic discography that has been and will be hailed for generations. Though his first posthumous album Exodus, recorded while X was still alive and executive produced by Swizz Beatz, was shared a month after his passing, for some, namely Funkmaster Flex, it wasn’t enough.

On last week’s Hot 97 radio show (September 1), the DJ challenged Swizz to send him a record from X’s vault. Evidently, Swizz Beatz answered the call as Flex debuted an unreleased Dark Man X record on his Thursday night (September 8) radio show. The song samples Big Daddy Kane’s 1988 record “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’” and features production from Marley Marl.

“Unreleased, we don’t know when it’s coming out,” exclaimed Flex after playing some of the track. Notably, Swizz Beats can be heard on the record saying “When I say ‘DMX,’ y’all say ‘The great.” Rightfully so.

Swizz Beatz has spoken previously on how he wants to handle X’s music that has yet to be released in an interview with The Breakfast Club. “Let’s do something masterful with it. Let’s treat it as art and curate it to where it adds to his legacy and is not just a blip of a moment that seems like it works, but you still don’t understand the whole story.”

Check out the unreleased DMX record via Swizz Beatz and Funk Flex above.

Evan Rachel Wood Is Crossing Her Fingers That Madonna Is Still ‘Cool’ With Her After Her ‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story’ Performance

As the Weird Al Yankovic biopic makes it’s debut at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, Evan Rachel Wood is hoping that Madonna is “cool” with her performance as the legendary pop star. In a new interview for Weird‘s TIFF premiere, Wood revealed that she’s actually interacted with Madonna over the years, which helped prepare her for taking on the iconic role in the Daniel Radcliffe-fronted film.

“I love Madonna,” Wood told IndieWire. “I’ve met her before. We’ve been very friendly. So I think we’re cool. I’m hoping we’re cool.”

Working in Wood’s favor is the fact that the film is heavily fictionalized, and also, Madonna has a pretty busy schedule these days:

“The good news is nothing in this movie actually happened, so I’m a little safe there.”

Plus, Wood is doubtful that Madonna will address her portrayal of her short-lived romance with Weird Al, who co-wrote and produced the film. “I don’t think she’s going to respond at all,” Wood said. “She has other things on her mind and other things to do.”

On top of being one of the biggest pop sensations in the world, Madonna is currently working on a biopic of herself. The film, which Madonna will also direct, locked down Ozark‘s Julia Garner for the title role. However, it wasn’t an easy process. Garner faced tough competition (Florence Pugh and Odessa Young were among the top contenders.) and everyone who auditioned reportedly had to take part in a grueling “Madonna boot camp,” which Wood wisely dodged by going the comedy biopic route.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story starts streaming November 4 on The Roku Channel.

Saucy Santana’s Bouncy New Single ‘I’m Too Much’ Keeps His Stellar 2022 Going

Saucy Santana’s stellar breakout year continues with another new potential hit, “I’m Too Much.” Picking up where his fan-favorite tracks “Walk,” “Material Gworllllllll!,” and “Here We Go” left off, Santana stunts all over a bouncy beat, telling off his haters with a clipped, flouncy flow. “Bitch, I got too much drip,” he snorts. “Hatin’ ass hoes got too much lip / Talkin’ big sh*t under all my pics / Mad ’cause your body don’t hit like this.” Santana is clearly making the most of his moment.

And what a moment it has been. After receiving co-signs from fellow Miami artists like City Girls and Rick Ross, Santana’s ever-increasing popularity led to a slot in the 2022 XXL Freshman Class, just after he dropped his Beyonce-sampling hit single “Booty” featuring former Freshman Latto. His rising profile led to him premiering “I’m Too Much” at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards along with a performance of “Booty,” with his Renni Rucci collaboration “Money” popping up in the season finale of HBO’s Rap Sh!t — which, fittingly, is also based in Miami.

Santana hasn’t announced a follow-up to his 2021 album Keep It Playa yet, but that just gives fans more time to get familiar before he really takes off now that he’s signed to RCA Records (like his bestie Latto). For now, check out “I’m Too Much” above.

Putin’s Regime Already Appears To Be Bringing The Hammer Down On Local Officials Who Want To Overthrow Him For His Ukraine War

Vladimir Putin’s regime is notoriously swift to arrest and/or jail protestors and dissenters. As such, it’s hard to believe that Putin wouldn’t have secretly weighed in on those local officials who recently moved to charge the Russian president with treason and have him booted from office. This took place in a district (Smolninskoye) near Russia’s second-largest city, St. Petersburg, and the accusations are all about Putin’s dismal Ukraine war, which has reaped immense loss of life on both sides and brought economic turmoil to the country that he leads.

As the Daily Beast reported earlier this week, the local lawmakers (led by Dmitry Palyuga) called out Putin’s war-making, which “is harming Russia’s security and its citizens.” They further scrutinized Putin’s “historical fantasies,” and it sure looks like the consequences are already coming down on these lawmakers for daring to push against a president who doesn’t take kindly to criticism.

As Newsweek now reports, law enforcement has now summoned Dimitri Palyuga (and fellow deputy Nikita Yurefev) for the offense of “discrediting” Putin’s government. Here’s Palyuga’s tweet on the subject:

And here’s Newsweek‘s lowdown:

The pair were ordered to make an appearance at a police station located on Mytninskaya Street in St. Petersburg at 9 a.m. local time on Friday, according to the messages.

They were informed that the purpose of the summons was to draw up a protocol on an administrative offense under a stringent new law that cracks down on dissent over the war against Ukraine.

This sounds rather intimidating, to say the very least, and there’s no telling when the situation will improve if people aren’t allowed to dissent or protest without fear of arrest. It’s no wonder that Russians are existing in huge numbers, all while Ukrainian people remain under siege in Putin’s quest to take hold of their country for over six months and counting.

Gina Prince-Bythewood On Why ‘The Woman King’ Is So Personal To Her

Gina Prince-Bythewood says The Woman King is the movie she’s always wanted to make. The director whose earlier efforts were more personal dramas (like, of course, Love & Basketball) has, with her last two films, veered into all-out action with 2020’s The Old Guard and, now, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Woman King. As a huge fan of movies like Gladiator and Braveheart, and an admirer of directors like Kathryn Bigalow, these are the movies she’s been wanting to make but, until recently, couldn’t even get into a room to make her case.

The Woman King stars Viola Davis as General Nanisca who leads an all-woman elite fighting force that protects her kingdom from outside invaders. A rival kingdom reveals its intentions to not only attack, but has also made a deal with slave traders. Nanisca must train a whole new group of warriors in an effort to protect the kingdom. And Nanisca pays special attention to one of her young future warriors, Nawi (Thuso Mbedu).

The idea of The Woman King has been floating around for a while and it kind of seems like fate the Prince-Bythewood would wind up directing after the success of The Old Guard. But it’s not just a movie of epic battles (those are there), but Prince-Bythewood explains ahead how she put her own experiences into the film. Namely, the relationship between a young woman given up for adoption reuniting with her birth mother. Something Prince-Bythewood has experienced that did not go the way she had hoped, so she got to play that situation out again in The Woman King with a different resolution.

It does seem like you’ve had a shift in the kind of movies you make? Was action something you always wanted to do? Or does that just happen?

You know what it is? The industry made a shift. I mean, I’ve always loved these movies. I love action movies. I love historical epics. Braveheart is one of my favorite movies…

I saw you mentioned The Last of the Mohicans, too.

I love that film. It holds up. It holds up. So I’ve always wanted to be in that bigger sandbox, but women were shut out of it and it wasn’t until Wonder Woman and Patty Jenkins and the success that she had, that suddenly cracked open that door and led to more opportunities. It was certainly Skydance wanting a woman for The Old Guard.

Kathryn Bigelow had a lot of success, but it didn’t seem to have the ripple effects. There’s Mimi Leder’s Deep Impact, stuff like that, but with Patty Jenkins it did seem to spread out.

And trust me, Kathryn Bigelow was my hero coming out of film school. She was doing the type of films like I wanted to do. And then just continued to do great work. But yeah, the door just wasn’t open, so I had the desire, but not the opportunity. So I just kept making these personal films that I wanted to make in hopes that it would eventually lead to something bigger.

So did you have to really convince someone for The Old Guard?

I couldn’t get in the room. Nobody could get in the room until you’ve done some sort of action. But how do you get that experience if you’re not let into the room? So it was this constant block, but it was Skydance wanting a woman for The Old Guard. And it was Love & Basketball and Beyond the Lights that got me in the room, because they wanted someone who was really good with story and character for that piece, and that’s the first time that that happened.

So if you don’t do The Old Guard, do you get to do The Woman King?

Yeah, that’s a good question. I absolutely do feel like all my work up, until this point, including The Old Guard, made me ready to take on The Woman King. I learned a lot with Silver & Black, even though it didn’t go, which made going to The Old Guard feel more like a step than a leap. And then from Old Guard to this? I learned so much in terms of action shooting, action choreographing, and training the actors for action, it made this just a side movement.

Before the pandemic was The Old Guard supposed to get a theatrical run?

It was supposed to get both.

I’m sure that was disappointing not to have the theaters, but at the same time, at that point in 2020, people were really excited for a new action movie coming to their houses.

No, it was interesting when I first got the gig, it was going to be theatrical and then they came to me and said, “Netflix wants this film and will give you dramatically more money than a studio would have.” It was interesting; the studios were like, “Ah, it’s two women at the head of it, maybe…” Where Netflix was like, “We want this.” And that’s pretty hard to turn down. And the difference in budget was substantial, but I just didn’t know what that was going to feel like. What does it feel like to come out on Netflix? Is it going to have the bigness? Am I going to feel the energy? And then it was, okay, well, you’ll have both, so I could feel it. But then the pandemic hit.

But everyone saw that movie.

I know…

That has to mean something, right?

No, it’s amazing. Don Granger, at Skydance, his final argument to me was, we make movies for an audience and this will give you the biggest audience and so I was like, “Okay, cool.” But then to actually have a film that drops in 190 countries on the same day, on the same moment, I’ve never… As a black artist, you were told, and I’ve been told my entire career, “Your films don’t travel,” so to suddenly have that type of feeling…

Not only traveling, it was everywhere.

Every country, everyone has access to it, I mean, whether you’re paying for it or not…

Right…

It was a beautiful, kind of seismic feeling that definitely changed my career.

A lot of movies today with all the CGI have a tendency to look sometimes like cartoons. Then Top Gun: Maverick comes out and everyone’s like, “Oh yeah, that’s how movies used to look. That’s real.” Anyway, your movie looks incredible. It also looks real. I think that’s what people want right now.

Oh, 100 percent. And again, I love Marvel movies.

Yeah, oh I do too. Don’t get me wrong.

But there’s something… I mean, again, my references were Braveheart and Gladiator, these movies that came out back in the day that don’t get made very often today. I mean, that are visceral and raw and real and I never wanted to get away from that. These are real women; this is a real story. I never want an audience to forget that and that was a big part of shooting in South Africa as well. I wanted the scope and the epic feel to it. I didn’t want it to feel like a green-screen movie. And I wanted the actors to have a 360 environment to play in so that when they’re walking around in the clothes that they’re wearing, they’re not looking over and seeing a car or an airplane up ahead. It was just, this is the world that we’ve created for you.

I couldn’t help but notice there’s an important plot point in this movie of an adopted daughter meeting her birth mother. And this is something you went through personally and, from what I understand, it wasn’t the greatest experience when you met her. How much of that goes into this movie? Is that too personal, a bad question?

No, it’s not. That’s what I love about being a director and a writer, is to be able to put myself into stories and it the incredible conversations that I was able to have with Viola and Thuso about the storyline, because some of the dialogue is what I wish I had heard.

That’s what it felt like, but I also thought maybe I was reading too much into that…

No, it’s interesting because there were some arguments that, at times, about this film, specific things and dialogue… but it is that thing, what is a filmmaker in their vision? What did they bring to it? And there could be a hundred filmmakers that would’ve made this film a little differently, or maybe just focused on the fact that these women are badass fighters and that’s what this movie is. For me, as a filmmaker and my vision, this is the movie I wanted to tell: both intimate and epic and have that personal story weaved in. And to be able to tell the story of these two women, and obviously don’t want to give it away, but it was important to me to have this story but also have it be truthful because I know the truth. I could talk to Thuso about the depth of what she would feel in that moment, and Viola as well, so…

There’s a moment you could have easily ended the movie, but then there’s great care taken to really have more dialogue between the mother and daughter and that’s when it hit me. I’m like, okay, there’s some real emotion coming out here from you, at least I think.

Yeah, that’s the thing. If I ended where you are talking about, that’s like, yes you could technically. But that’s not the end of the story. That’s, on the surface, the end of the story, but there are two women who had a profound connection and there has to be some closure to that. It wasn’t the true ending of the story in their story until they could say those words to each other.

Right. Well yeah, it hit me. It’s like, well this is the story. The story is between these two, and especially coming from your perspective, I’m like, yeah, if I’m you, of course this is the story. And it’s like it really hit me when that almost coda of after all the action is over and I was like, this is, especially with people who know your story. This is actually really lovely, and it was really emotional when you just said, “I wish this is what I had heard,” and that’s a very beautiful thing to say. I don’t know if that makes sense.

I am curious why you’re not doing The Old Guard 2. Was that your choice?

Yeah. There’s something about sequels for me. When I do a film, I put everything into it and even if I haven’t written the original script, I’m still writing on it and putting myself into it and it’s like, this is what I wanted to say. And I always knew that The Old Guard, I always knew that it was a trilogy and I loved where it was going, but I said what I wanted to say and The Woman King came and this just trumped everything. This was the movie that I’d been waiting probably my whole life to do.

So you wouldn’t consider more of The Woman King story? I know we’re a day before eve the premiere of the first one…

[Laughs] It’s like, whoa! No, but if somebody else wants to take on this story, because there are a thousand stories that haven’t been told within this world? And it is my hope, certainly, that this film and its hopeful success will inspire others. And studios, honestly, to fund these type of movies because, again, this is one that’s never happened in the history of cinema. How is that possible in 2022?
