One Of The Best Performances On ‘I Think You Should Leave’ Almost Never Happened

After I Think You Should Leave instantly became a viral hit for Netflix, spawning hundreds of memes in its wake, Season Two of the Tim Robinson sketch comedy series pulled off the impressive feat of being just as good, if not arguably better, than the first season. However, a new interview with casting director Leslie Woo reveals that the show almost lost one of its best Season Two sketches thanks to COVID.

Actor Biff Wiff‘s portrayal of an unfiltered Santa Claus who scores an acting role as loose cannon cop, Detective Crashmore, nearly got cut before Wiff even had a chance to audition for the role. Fortunately, Woo decided to press on with virtual auditions, and well, the whole thing was cosmic gumbo. Via IndieWire:

The process that eventually led to Biff Wiff (who’s gone on to have a standout year with other parts in “Dave” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) was one that nearly stopped in March 2020 before it even had the chance to start.

“The first day that I was going to audition the Santa Clause role was the day before everything shut down. Knowing that we had a bunch of older gentlemen coming in the next day, we shut things down a day early,” Woo said. “So I was doing live self-tapes and Skypes with them simultaneously. The experience of that was so wonderful and amazing, just to be able to talk to these guys for a minute and get to know them, but that was definitely one of the roles that presented challenges from a logistical standpoint.”

As for the magic of Wiff’s performance as a profane Santa discovering the joys of his acting rate, turns out the dude was channeling himself and playing it as “real as I possibly could without giving [a] totally flat reading.” In an interview with Uproxx‘s Vince Mancini, Wiff said that his process even earned its on nickname on the set.

“The director, Zach was a really nice guy. They’d give me a lot of freedom,” Wiff said. “Almost every shot was, okay, you’ve done it, so we’ve got what we want, do it like you want. And they were real good about that. They just started calling it ‘The Wiff Way.’” And if you don’t like it, well..

Elon Musk Is On Pace To Become The World’s First Trillionaire, In Case You Were Worried About His Bank Account

America’s first millionaire was opium smuggler John Jacob Astor. America’s first billionaire was oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller. America (and the world) doesn’t have its first trillionaire yet, but it could happen as soon as two years from now.

How is that student loan forgiveness going again?

Approve crunched the no-human-should-have-that-much-money numbers and found that Tesla founder / Rick and Morty meme-lord Elon Musk is on pace to become the world’s first trillionaire by 2024. “We compared the annual net worths of the top 30 richest people from 2017 through to the present day, to calculate the year on year annual growth rate for each of our billionaires and estimate how soon each of them will reach one trillion dollars,” the study reads. How could he get there?

The world’s richest person, Elon Musk, has an estimated net worth of $263 billion as of 19/01/22, according to Forbes. Since 2017, Musk’s fortune has shown an annual average increase of 129%, which could see him enter the trillion-dollar club in just two short years, achieving a net worth of $1.38 trillion by 2024 at age 52.

A lot could happen to damage Musk’s bank account by 2024, like, say, attempting to buy a famously not-profitable social media platform. In which case, Gautam Adani, “the chairman of the commodity trading business Adani Group,” is next in line to cross the one trillionaire barrier. (A trillion dollars is such a foreign concept that my laptop doesn’t even recognize “trillionaire” as a word.) He’s followed by Zhang Yiming (2026), Mukesh Ambani (2029), Bernard Arnault (2029), and Jeff Bezos, all the way in 2030. Is it even worth being a trillionaire if you have to wait eight years?

Maybe we pegged Elon all wrong by comparing him to Wario. He’s more of a Mr. Burns.

Juice WRLD’s Engineer Max Lord Accuses Grade A Productions Of Making Death Threats Against Him

Although late Chicago rapper Juice WRLD’s catalog has proven to be quite lucrative since his passing (two posthumous albums with another in the works), not everyone is satisfied with the handling of his unfinished recordings. After Juice’s former girlfriend Ally Lotti insinuated that his legacy is being mishandled by his label, Grade A Productions, Juice’s former engineer-producer Max Lord also chimed in on Twitter to back up to show support for her and offer context.

According to Lord, Grade A co-founder George “G Money” Dickinson and Juice WRLD manager Peter Jideonwo — although he took care to exclude Juice’s mentor Lil Bibby from his accusations — have resorted to some unsavory methods to gain control of Juice’s music, even resorting to death threats against Lord. He accused them of using a Twitter account (which has been locked) to disrupt Juice’s fan community on social media while trying to strong-arm him into handing over recording equipment.

Tweets from the @chasemasta account on Twitter accuse Lord of taking “all Juice’s studio equipment when he died” and using his possession of the equipment as leverage over Grade A. Meanwhile, Lord says that the person behind @chasemasta was trying to set him up at the behest of Dickinson and Jideonwo.

“This @chasemasta kid is a pawn they let come hang out for a couple weeks to help disrupt the juice fan community to ensure every time you listen to Juice Wrld they get paid,” he wrote. “They want me out of their way, discredited, so they can continue to have their way. These open threats of violence against me from Grade A, posted on Chase’s Twitter, this stuff is absurd. They’re openly threatening to kill me. They’ve stolen firearms from me. They’ve threatened me with them. We’ve gotten in physical altercations because Juice didn’t like beats G Money tried to have him record on the day before he passed away, that he would profit from. With Ally coming [out] about these sorts of things, I owe it to her and Jarad to back her up here and speak out on this.”

Both men have denied Lord’s claims in the comments of an Instagram post recounting the drama.

Meanwhile, leaks from the third posthumous Juice WRLD album, The Party Never Ends, have threatened to put the kibosh on the whole project.

‘Lightyear’ Star Chris Evans Sounds Thrilled That The Movie’s Same-Sex Kiss Made The Final Cut After All

Despite their frequent references to potential gay characters, Disney and Pixar haven’t actually shown LGBTQ characters being openly affectionate with each other, that is until Lightyear came around. The Toy Story spinoff famously features a same-sex kiss that was allegedly taken out of the film during editing, only to be added back after Pixar employees spoke out about the ordeal.

The stars of the film, Uzo Aduba and Chris Evans, are happy that Disney took the steps to add the moment back in. “It’s incredible, and a real hats off to Disney and Pixar for having that kiss be a part of this story,” Aduba told Vanity Fair. “The kiss is a greeting and a gesture of love that is tender. It does establish who they are as people, but it is not the singular identifier for who either of them are. Seeing a loving gay couple in a meaningful way is important for everybody.”

Evans, who plays the titular Lightyear man himself, thinks that it’s important to show these moments. “It’s great that it’s back in the film,” Evans said. “I think it’s a shame that it’s such a story. It should be more normalized, but I’m glad we are making those steps.” Evans has been openly supportive of the LGBTQ community after his brother came out.

Still, Evans makes a great point: it shouldn’t have to be a big deal to have something like a kiss be in a movie. Producer Galyn Susman added, “Representation is huge for us, and we want to make connections with as many people as possible. Alisha and her wife have a relationship that lasts an entire lifetime. We don’t have enough movies that show relationships that last an entire life, and that’s aspirational.”

Lightyear hits theaters this Friday, starring the cutest little robot cat in the entire world.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge’ Gets A June 16 Release Date During Summer Game Fest

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge has so far looked like the Ninja Turtles game that fans have been asking for. Back in the days of the Super Nintendo and Arcade machines, there were few better franchises as consistently good as the Ninja Turtles. Unfortunately, as other games improved, the Turtles franchise became more known for mediocrity than quality. The hope is that Shredder’s Revenge will get the Turtles back where they belong.

It turns out we’re gonna get a chance to play this new game sooner than any of us had expected. During Summer Game Fest 2022, it was announced that Shredder’s Revenge will release on June 16 with plenty of exciting new features such as six player multiplayer and Casey Jones as a playable character.

“The childhood dream shared between Dotemu and Tribute Games that ultimately became TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is almost 30 years in the making, and in just a few days, we’ll invite fans back to the TMNT beat-em-up legacy to kick shell in an all-new game,” said Cyrille Imbert, CEO of Dotemu via an official press release. “This all truly feels surreal.”

June 16 is extremely close and it’s so exciting that the chance to play a new Turtles game is right around the corner.

Master storyteller Elyse Myers has people rolling at her ‘edible plates’ wedding mishap

If you haven’t discovered Elyse Myers‘ TikTok channel yet, you’re in for a treat.

You know a person has some kind of “X factor” when they manage to gather over 5 million followers without being a celebrity first and without taking off their clothes. Elyse Myers definitely has that X factor.

Sometimes she offers snippets of wise life advice, like this:

@elysemyers

You aren’t a game. Tell them to move on. 🤍

Sometimes she shares what it’s like to live with ADHD and social anxiety. Sometimes she dances or sings (she has a gorgeous, husky singing voice). Sometimes she’s serious, sometimes she’s silly, but where she really shines is in her storytelling.

Myers often shares interesting and/or funny stories from her life, many of which come from her time working as a cater waiter. It’s hard to describe why, but the way she spins a tale is so engaging. It’s not that she’s particularly animated—in fact, her low-key verbal delivery is part of the appeal—but her combo of quick talking, illustrative hand gestures and perfectly timed pauses just works. And the cartoon overlays are just a little cherry on top.

All of her stories are great, but one recent saga she shared really takes the cake—or the quiche, as it were.

In response to the question, “What’s one of the funniest things that’s happened to you as a cater waiter?” Myers describes how she was working a wedding for a bride who requested that all of the service items—plates, bowls, cups, etc.—be edible. Odd request, Myers thought, but she went with it, informing the guests that they could eat their plate right along with their mini quiches. She even tried it herself.

As her caption says, “Turns out, it was as weird as I thought it was.”

Just wait for the end:

@elysemyers

Turns out, it was as weird as I thought it was. 🍮 #coffeetalk #ecofriendly

People were dying over the ending.

“The secondhand embarrassment I feel right now hurts, I am so sorry 😭😭😭” wrote one person.

“My steering wheel is covered in coffee. I was not ready. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣,” wrote another.

“I CAN’T BREATHE 🤣 I AM WHEEZING SO HARD THAT MY CATS HAVE SCATTERED.”

“I AM HOWLINGGGGG.”

“Thank you, Elyse. I’m home with covid and I just snort splattered my screen with snot laughing at this.” (Ew.)

Someone asked how many people ate the plates, and Myers responded, “At least 7.” Can you even imagine?

Definitely go check out her other videos if you haven’t already. But just for funsies, here’s one more. The “proof” at the end is too much.

@elysemyers

I left it to the professionals after that. #coffeetalk #theadhdway

21 Savage Knows The Three Things Jay-Z Spends His Money On And Is Following Suit

While Jay-Z is quick to give financial advicetake the cash, not the dinner, kids — he’s not just bumping his gums. He actually practices what he preaches. During a recent interview with Math Hoffa’s podcast My Expert Opinion, one of Jay’s many, many mentees, 21 Savage, explained how Jay has not only shared his knowledge with younger peers but also puts his money where his mouth is, so to speak.

“We ain’t really have no financial conversation,’” Savage admitted. However, because Jay is Jay, their conversation naturally trended in that direction, with Jay revealing the top three things he spends his own money on. “He just was like, ‘chef,’ I went and got a chef. A doctor, I went and got a doctor. And he said a lawyer. I already had a lawyer at the time.”

Savage also explained how following Jay’s example improved his own life. “I eat cleaner,” he elaborated. “I don’t really gotta leave the house as much. And the doctor is convenient, too. I hate hospitals and shit. It’s just good to have on call. He got a different level of doctor, though… Not live-in, but they’ll come give you surgery at your house.”

The Rock Showed Up Shirtless At Summer Game Fest And Brought Extremely Chaotic Energy

When Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson shows up, everyone pays attention. Not only because he has that kind of charisma, but because you know there is usually an announcement of some kind coming with him. Whether it’s a new movie, video game, or whatever product he happens to be working with at that time.

So when Johnson appeared at Summer Game Fest 2022 everyone immediately began to hang on his every word. Not only because he might be announcing a new video game, but also because he was shirtless inside his own personal gym recording from what was most likely his phone.

So what did Johnson have to say? Well, a lot of things! He told us about his energy drink brand, how he’s delivered a ton of pizzas, and then how excited he was to be starring in Black Adam. From that point on a trailer for Black Adam played and his promo cut was done.

The only way to really describe this moment is chaotic. Everything from Johnson recording this shirtless from the gym, to him using his three plus minutes to promote every product he could think of, and then ending it on not a video game trailer but for a movie is a rather wild use of time in a video game showcase.

Breakthrough study says $500 worth of therapy and $200 cash saves men from a life of crime

“What if I told you that roughly $500 for therapy + a little cash helped the most troubled young men in West Africa drop their crime and violence by half. For at least 10 years,” Chris Blattman, professor of global conflict studies at the University of Chicago, opens a stunning tweet thread introducing the results of a study he began 13 years ago.

Blattman traveled to Liberia in 2009 with his wife as she did research on reintegrating ex-fighters from the war. Blattman had free time so he met up with Johnson Borh.

“He was a combatant in the war and now ran some kind of NGO. He seemed to know everyone and be able to go everywhere. So I asked him to show me around how the crime and drug markets worked,” Blattman tweeted.

Blattman couldn’t get over the fact that wherever they went, men would run over to Borh and give him a big hug. “How do you know Borh?” he asked them and every time he heard a similar response.

“I used to be like them,” and they’d point to the drug den or pickpockets. “But then I went through Borh’s program.”

For 15 years, Borh and his colleagues ran the STYL: Sustainable Transformation of Youth in Liberia program to help transform the most dangerous men in the city. “They met in abandoned buildings, in groups of maybe 20, for a couple of hours a day. Johnson trained some counselors, and they eked out a living on the program,” Blattman wrote.

Blattman got his team of researchers together to do a larger version of a similar program using the cognitive behavioral therapy techniques used by Borh. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an approach for reducing self-destructive beliefs and behaviors and promoting positive ones.

“Things looked really good. So I recruit my coauthors to help run a large-scale study,” Blattman tweeted. “We scaled up, raised a million dollars, and ran a huge randomized controlled trial with 999 of the toughest men in Monrovia.”

The therapy sessions focused on three types of behavioral change. The first was an attempt to get the men to “behave and self-identify as normal society members rather than as an outcast or criminal.” The second was to foster future orientation over present-biased behavior. The program taught skills to “manage emotions, reduce impulsivity, become more conscientious and persevering, and become more planful and goal-oriented in their daily activities.”

Finally, the team worked to teach the men how to deal with anger, interpersonal violence and threatening situations.

The researchers also held a cash lottery where some men were randomly selected to win $200. The men were told they could do anything with the money but were encouraged to use it to start a business or make home improvements.

The team followed up a year later and the results were inspiring.

Those who received the CBT and the cash slashed their antisocial behaviors by 50%. Those who had just therapy saw decreasing results over time, but those who received the cash and therapy had their new, positive behaviors more deeply entrenched.

Ten years later, the team was a little uneasy about seeing if the impact had lasted.

“I was pessimistic,” Blattman said. “We surveyed experts in advance. Almost all expected CBT Only or Cash Only to have no effect whatsoever after 10 years. For Therapy plus Cash, one-third of the experts predicted no effect at all. 2/3 predicted steeply diminished impacts.”

However, the researchers found that crime and violence were still down by 50% with those who got the CBT and cash.

“The therapy helped participants change their intentions, identity and behavior, and provided almost daily commitment and reinforcement,” the study’s conclusion states. “After eight weeks of therapy, the grant provided some men with the cash they needed to maintain their new identity—to avoid homelessness, to feed themselves, and to continue to dress decently.”

Blattman believed that his team’s findings are important and should be put into practice today in America for two reasons. “Gun violence is spiking in the Americas,” he tweeted. “Cities need solutions. They’re searching for ones that don’t involve coercion.”

Second, it works.

“All the evidence suggests CBT-informed programs are fast, effective, hyper-targeted, non-coercive ways to reduce violence,” he wrote.

Kyle Banks Delivers A Laid-Back Performance Of ‘Bogus’ For ‘UPROXX Sessions’

For yesterday’s edition of UPROXX Sessions, I wrote about how much I love it when artists bring their own props. Truly, not enough of them do this and it’s always entertaining whether it’s something simple like a red cup, or something much more dramatic. Remember when Dana Dentata brought a whole fake murder scene? Good times.

But what I love even more than those are the ones where artists bring musicians with them, because it heightens the actual music as well as the performance. There’s just something about cramming extra people into the set along with their instruments that just livens things up. Kyle Banks apparently got the memo, bringing a keyboardist to his performance of “Bogus,” a groovy, laid-back rap&B cut that sounds perfect for two-stepping on an LA summer night. It fits because Banks is an LA-based artist who has worked with some of the city’s finest, including fellow Sessions alums Bino Rideaux, BlueBucksClan, and Kalan.FrFr.

Watch Kyle Banks’s UPROXX Sessions performance of “Bogus” above.

UPROXX Sessions is Uproxx’s performance show featuring the hottest up-and-coming acts you should keep an eye on. Featuring creative direction from LA promotion collective, Ham On Everything, and taking place on our “bathroom” set designed and painted by Julian Gross, UPROXX Sessions is a showcase of some of our favorite performers, who just might soon be yours, too.
