Freddie Gibbs, The Actor, Looks Like The Real Deal In The ‘Down With The King’ Trailer

While there haven’t been many notable rappers who shined on the big screen through the years, there have been a few. 2Pac was a masterful villain in Juice and Above The Rim, DMX made an iconic performance as Tommy “Buns” Bundy in Belly, and you just can’t say enough about how spot-on Method Man was as Melvin “Cheese” Wagstaff in The Wire. But it could really go either way (I’m looking at you, Common), because the transition isn’t always fluid and not every rapper has legit acting chops.

If the trailer for Down With The King indicates anything, it’s that Freddie Gibbs can act and he’s ready to rise to the occasion as a multi-talented artist. The film, which is Gibbs’s film acting debut, is about a big-time rapper who gets sent to live in a rural farming community by his manager (played by David Krumholtz), in order to get away from the hoopla of celebrity culture and the music industry for a while.

Gibbs’ palpable range as an actor comes through immediately in the trailer. There’s a balance between pensive moments, well-delivered lines, and even the comic relief of Gibbs corralling pigs in his Timberland boots. To his and the film’s credit, it’s already gotten hat tips from a number of film festivals, including Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Diego Ongaro, it’s out digitally and on-demand June 28th.

Watch the trailer for Down With the King above.

The Blazers Are Reportedly Expected To Trade The No. 7 Pick For A Veteran

With just four teams remaining in the postseason (and soon to be three), the NBA Draft is the main focus for many teams and fans as we approach the end of May. The Draft Combine last week offered a chance for teams and fans to watch some of the draft hopefuls go through drills and scrimmages, and even more get measured and sized up.

This year’s Draft features what seems to be a consensus top-4, with Chet Holmgren, Jabari Smith, Paolo Banchero, and Jaden Ivey occupying those four positions on most every draft board in some order. Beyond that, though, there’s some serious variance and in drafts like that, there is always considerable potential for movement on draft night, as teams will fall in love with prospects and want to move up, while others will be looking to back down the board or out of a pick completely.

There are plenty of candidates in the lottery to look to trade their pick, but Portland sitting at 7th overall is widely expected to trade the pick, with Jerami Grant — who was connected with the Blazers at the deadline — among the anticipated targets, per John Hollinger of The Athletic.

The pick that seems even more certain to be on the move is Portland’s at No. 7, with sources saying the Blazers will push to immediately put a competitive team around Damian Lillard rather than start over. Detroit’s Jerami Grant has been the hot name here, but the Blazers could look at other options.

Portland spent the second half of the year actively tanking trying to land a top pick and when they found themselves 7th on lottery night — somewhat ironically getting leapt by the Sacramento Kings, who they purposefully got behind in the standings — it all but guaranteed Joe Cronin would be shopping that around. As Hollinger notes, there will not be an extended rebuild in Portland, rather a quick effort at a retool around Damian Lillard, with Anfernee Simons stepping into a prominent role this past season.

Grant is a popular choice to go to Portland given how he would provide them with a much needed wing scorer and defender, but it’ll be interesting to see what other names pop up between now and Draft night as potential trade targets for the Blazers as they look to flip a mid-lottery pick into someone that can help them vault right back into the playoff hunt next season.

Everything Coming To (And Leaving) HBO And HBO Max In June 2022

New content alert!

HBO and HBO Max just released their June lineup, and there’s plenty to be excited about for streaming fans. Westworld is back for more madness and mayhem as a human revolution goes against a robot army (lead by Tessa Thompson, of course). Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander plays a woman blurring the lines between fiction and reality in terrifying ways in the limited series Irma Vep. And for comedy fans, Andy Garcia is reviving the Father of the Bride plot for a new generation.

Here’s everything coming to (and leaving) HBO and HBO Max this June.

Westworld: Season 4 (HBO series streaming 6/26)

The mind-bending sci-fi series kicks its fourth season off with a human revolution and the return of Evan Rachel Wood. Despite Dolores dying in season three, Wood is back as some form of the park’s most notorious host as Maeve hunts for her daughter, Caleb leads the resistance, Charlotte Hale builds a robot army, and Bernard searches for the Sublime. So yeah, we’ve got a lot of territory to cover this time around.

Irma Vep (HBO limited series streaming 6/6)

Olivier Assayas directs this limited series based on his ’90s flick. This time, Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander plays his muse, a young actress named Mira who’s become increasingly disillusioned with fame and her lackluster artistic career. She reinvents herself by signing on to play Vep under the direction of an eccentric auteur, but the lines between actress and character begin to blur in disturbing ways.

Father of the Bride (HBO Max movie streaming 6/16)

This remake of the beloved ’90s film series sees Andy Garcia taking on the title role of a Cuban family patriarch struggling to come to grips with his daughter’s impending nuptials. The regular hijinks ensue as relationships amongst the large and loud brood are pushed to the breaking point in hilarious ways.

Lucasfilm Has Already Warned ‘Obi-Wan’ Star Moses Ingram About The ‘Likely’ Racist Reaction From The Worst Corner Of ‘Star Wars’ Fans

When the first Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer hit earlier in the year, Moses Ingram was easily one of the highlights as Reva, an Inquisitor working to hunt down surviving Jedis at the behest of Darth Vader. Ingram’s casting continued Star Wars‘ commitment to embracing diversity, and the actor says the upcoming Disney+ series builds on that commitment more than any other project.

Obi-Wan is going to bring the most diversity I think we’ve ever seen in the galaxy before,” Ingram told The Independent. “To me, it’s long overdue. If you’ve got talking droids and aliens, but no people of colour, it doesn’t make any sense. It’s 2022, you know.”

Unfortunately, as previous franchise stars John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran can attest, the Star Wars fandom has a racist problem tucked into its ugliest corners. However, Ingram says that this time around Lucasfilm and Obi-Wan director Deborah Chow went into her casting with eyes wide open, and they prepared for the worst:

“It was something that Lucasfilm actually got in front of, and said, ‘This is a thing that, unfortunately, likely will happen. But we are here to help you; you can let us know when it happens.’”

The actor credits director Deborah Chow, as well as others throughout Lucasfilm, for “putting the proper systems in place so I feel safe as we do the work”.

Ingram’s eyes were equally wide open going into the franchise, and she revealed her own strategy for dealing with the Star Wars fandom’s unfortunate underbelly, and it’s a pretty good one. “I have no problem with the block button,” Ingram said.

Obi-Wan Kenobi starts streaming May 27 on Disney+.

‘The Boys’ Cast Had A Whale Of A Time Reflecting On One Of The Show’s Craziest Moments Ahead Of Season 3

The Boys returns on June 3 for a third installment of satirical superhero mayhem. The show’s already previewed how Homelander is definitely not alright after the events of the Season 2 finale (watching his own son burn Stormfront to a crisp before Queen Maeve wished him a very lonely life). He ended up self-pleasuring from atop a skyscraper and probably killed some unsuspecting passersby in the process, or he made more Supe kids. This season has also teased Captain America parody Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), who will tear everyone’s little world apart, including his own.

What else? There will be a musical episode (in which Frenchie and Kimiko get down in a seemingly wholesome way) and there will be the private-island-set “Herogasm” episode. From there, though, the season as a whole promises to be even more outrageous than what we’ve seen before. In other words, grosser than exploding heads and death-by-oral because the cast is teasing how The Whale scene was only the beginning.

You remember The Whale, right? That’s the Season 2 moment that saw Billy Butcher drive a speedboat into the belly of an enormous sea mammal. Wee Hughie wore the greatest shock face in contemporary TV history, and even The Deep looked frightened. Amazon chose to use part of the scene while submitting for an Emmy, and let’s just say that the cast couldn’t stop talking about it to Entertainment Weekly. Here’s a taste of their obsession (from the mouths of Antony Starr, Karen Fukuhara, and Jack Quaid):

Every time Starr thinks showrunner Eric Kripke and his room of writers have gone too far with what they put on screen, it’s pretty much guaranteed that scene will become an iconic moment with viewers. He points to the season 2 episode where Urban’s Butcher drives a speedboat straight through a giant whale as a prime example. (The Emmys aired that clip as part of The Boys’ Best Drama nomination announcement during a July livestream. Quaid found it “most appropriate.”) And Fukuhara says season 3 “will make that whole whale sequence look like a piece of cake.” Reading the scripts, she didn’t know how they were going to pull off some of the material. “It’s not just about the crazy action scenes [or] the social commentary,” she explains, but also about “the depths of the characters, and the darkness that some of them go through. I don’t know how we did it, but hopefully it’s allowed to air.”

That wasn’t all. The scene is later referenced as the moment against which all The Boys‘ outrageousness is measured and the reason why everyone involved in the show trusts showrunner Eric Kripke’s vision. And it’s no wonder — can you imagine any other show or movie pulling off the same mood? Nope, but it fit The Boys just right. The tone, the execution, and the long-game setup all worked marvelously, and now, the show’s prepping to refuse to hold back in holding the feet of “powerful white dudes” to the flames while roasting them for feeling “disenfranchised.”

Get ready, Compound V addicts. The Boys returns on June 3.

Man uses TikTok to offer ‘dinner with dad’ to any kid that needs one, even adult ones

Summer Clayton is the father of 2.4 million kids and he couldn’t be more proud. His TikTok channel is dedicated to giving people intimate conversations they might long to have with their own father, but can’t. The most popular is his “Dinner With Dad” segment.

The concept is simple: Clayton, aka Dad, always sets down two plates of food. He always tells you what’s for dinner. He always blesses the food. He always checks in with how you’re doing.

I stress the stability here, because as someone who grew up with a less-than-stable relationship with their parents, it stood out immediately. I found myself breathing a sigh of relief at Clayton’s consistency. I also noticed the immediate emotional connection created just by being asked, “How was your day?” According to relationship coach and couples counselor Don Olund, these two elements—stability and connection—are fundamental cravings that children have of their parents. Perhaps we never really stop needing it from them.

Clayton’s videos make a huge impact on people. His latest “Dinner With Dad” had 3 million views. Many share being brought to tears, for different reasons.

@yourprouddad

Happy Sunday❤️. Is school out for you??

Some are reminded of what they once had with their own fathers.

“I’m never gonna have something like this again,” wrote one person.

Others lament what they will never get.

“I would die for my parents to say they are proud of me just once,” wrote another.

Most fully embrace Clayton as a stand-in father, sharing their personal triumphs, challenges, and insecurities.

One person shared, “Hi dad, I got into volleyball.”

Another vented, “Dad…I can’t sleep thinking about how scared I am of real life.”

Channeling Rob Kennedy, the creator of the “Dad How Do I?” YouTube series, Clayton also shares practical skills one might ask their father, such as how to tie a tie.

With his videos, Clayton exudes unconditional love and support, helping others feel accepted. In the video below, he happily offers his chips to kids who are straight and those who come out. And with both, he jokingly snatches the chip back. If that’s not dad behavior, I don’t know what is.

@yourprouddad

I’ll love you just the same. Dad jokes all around😂😂

Yep, Clayton gets dad jokes, in the best way. Like the time when he just couldn’t remember what special day it was … oh right, it’s your birthday. Hyuck, hyuck, hyuck. Then he presents three different cakes. It’s cheesy and delightful.

@yourprouddad

HAPPY BIRTHDAY🎉🎉🥳🥳🥳🎉🎉🎉

Clayton might not be a biological father (yet), but he makes for one great dad. It’s lovely to see the power of the internet being harnessed in such a positive and uplifting way. Thanks to TikTok, it’s never too late to have dinner with dad.

Tim Connelly Is Leaving Denver To Become Minnesota’s President Of Basketball Operations

The Minnesota Timberwolves entered this season with internal turmoil after firing team president Gersson Rosas just before training camp, but the team managed to put forth its best season since 2018, earning the 7-seed in the West through the play-in.

Their first round exit against the Memphis Grizzlies showed where their roster still needs to improve, and this summer figures to be critical for building on last year’s success if they are going to vault into the contender class in the West. To help guide that effort, the Wolves went out searching for a new president of basketball operations and have managed to poach away one of the league’s top executives, Nuggets president Tim Connelly, by offering a compensation package that includes a $40 million contract and a kicker that includes ownership equity that Denver was not willing to match.

The Nuggets will reportedly elevate GM Calvin Booth into Connelly’s role.

It’s a massive deal handed out by the Wolves that makes Connelly one of the league’s highest paid executives and one of the few with an equity stake, which is quite the commitment from Minnesota and one that they’ll hope pays off in continued growth for the team. Connelly’s track record in Denver is certainly strong, having turned Denver into a perennial playoff team in the West, chiefly off of homegrown talent, and the Wolves will hope that he can find the right moves to make this offseason to continue their ascent after a major step forward this season.

Noel Gallagher Needed Stitches After Getting Head-Butted In Man City’s Premier League Title Celebration

While Oasis’ Noel and Liam Gallagher haven’t seen each other in ten years, one thing they can still agree on is their love for Manchester City FC. The Gallaghers are well-documented fans of the Sky Blues and Noel Gallagher was in attendance at Etihad Stadium for Man City’s thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Aston Villa, which secured the Premier League title for his hometown club and broke the hearts of hopeful Liverpool FC supporters. However, Gallagher did not leave the stadium without some damage to his noggin.

When Man City scored their third and decisive goal, Gallagher, who was sitting in a luxury box, celebrated “like an idiot.” In a total Three Stooges moment, he was head-butted by the father of Man City’s Portuguese center-back, Ruben Dias, who was also in the box. Gallagher was left bloodied, got stitches in his top lip and is currently sporting two black eyes.

He detailed the wild incident in a conversation with TalkSport:

“As the third goal goes in, there is absolute bedlam in the stadium. Where we sit, Ruben Dias’ family are a couple of boxes up. I’m jumping around like an idiot, passing my son around like the Premier League trophy, everyone’s lifting him up. I turn around, Ruben Dias’ dad runs straight into me, headbutts me, I’m on the floor, covered in blood. I don’t see the last two minutes, I’ve got to get taken down by St. John’s Ambulance to get stitched up.

Lots of City fans are asking me what happened and I’m just saying, ‘You’ll never guess.’ There’s not a mark on him [Dias’ dad]. He’s a big bear of a man. He almost knocked my teeth out.”

Gallagher is gearing up for a tour with his band, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, but he says the injuries won’t keep him off the stage: “I’ve got rehearsals today, but the good thing about that is I’ve got three Liverpool fans in my band!”

Rick Ross Has Ended His Partnership With Epic Records And Is Seeking A New Deal

Rick Ross is once again independent but doesn’t plan on staying that way for long. In a new profile for HotNewHipHop, Ross revealed that he’d recently completed his partnership with Epic Records, and is currently taking offers from labels like Def Jam.

Ross also shared his process for seeking a new deal, which included one eyebrow-raising criterion: improvement on his last deal. “When I first came in the game, I just wanted a record deal. But guess what, once I released my first album I began renegotiating right then,” he said. “And I’ve got to salute Ted Lucas, the CEO of Slip-N-Slide records who I was signed to for my first six albums. Before I even made it to my last albums, I had damn near owned everything that I could own, other than a certain distribution percentage. Once you become successful — regardless of what you signed at first — you just come sit at the table like a man. A good businessman gon’ understand that, like ‘Homie you just did something I never even expected.’ And guess what, I did it every album. I asked for more, and I did it on both sides — not just with my record label but also with my attorneys. ‘Hey man, I was giving you give X amount of percentage on my first album, lets cut it down to 12. On the next let’s cut it to 8. Let’s get it to 5.’ That go for everybody. You renegotiate because you learning as you go. Before every album, that’s what you go sit down and say, ‘Hey man, I gotta ask for something I ain’t never had. I’m finna do something I ain’t never done before.’”

The Florida rapper completed his Epic deal in December with the release of Richer Than I Ever Been, his 11th studio album. An underachiever compared to its immediate predecessors, Rather You Than Me and Port of Miami 2, it peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard 200. However, he’s already teasing a new album which he’ll announce this summer despite not having secured a new record deal yet.

Chloe Delivers A Captivating Kanye West Cover You’ll Want To Play For ’24’ Hours

Chloe Bailey knows how to get the people talking. From her viral take on last year’s #Bussit challenge to her provocative music videos, she constantly gets social media in a frenzy. Another way she shows the people what she can do is by frequently posting covers on her social media. Today (May 23) she shared her rendition of Kanye West’s “24” off of his tenth studio album, 2021’s Donda.
