Even In A Loss, Giannis Antetokounmpo Made Clear The Road To A Championship Runs Through Him

Two games into the 2021 NBA Finals, it appeared Giannis Antetokounmpo was destined to fall short once again. After flamingoing his knee in the wrong direction against Atlanta, he had scuttled into a 20-point Game 1 in Phoenix, then watched as Milwaukee’s defense came apart in Game 2. The Suns were, it seemed, homing in on their first-ever championship.

Then, Giannis willed his body to forget about whatever may or may not have been holding his knee together by that point, put the Bucks on his back, and painted one of the greatest NBA Finals masterpieces the league has ever seen, capped off with a 50-point, 14-rebound, five-block masterpiece in the clinching Game 6 win. The Bucks were champions.

Long hailed for his unique talent and absurd work ethic, Giannis put all of it into practice to get his first ring. Years after he first won an MVP, there was finally no denying Giannis was the singular force any challenger would have to confront in order to rise in the NBA. As the league moves on from the LeBron James era (at least the one where it orbits completely around LeBron), the summer of 2021 may be looked back on as the time when Giannis rebuilt the road to a title directly through downtown Milwaukee.

When he was in Cleveland, now-Pelicans president David Griffin used to laud LeBron’s ability to “dictate outcomes.” In a sport where just 10 people occupy the court and one can have such an outsized impact, it’s a basic way to put into words what someone like LeBron did when he put a basketball game into his palm. There was Game 6 of the 2012 East Finals against Boston, when LeBron broke through with 45 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists to return to the Finals. There was Game 7 of the 2016 Finals, with 27 of the Cavs’ 93 points and The Block to give Cleveland its first title. There was even Game 1 of the 2018 Finals, where after a 51-8-8 it felt for one ecstatic night as if LeBron might steal another title from the Warriors’ dynasty with Jeff Green as his second-best teammate.

Especially in Cleveland, it felt as if LeBron could lift any group within sniffing distance of a championship. For a decade, with LeBron, you had a chance. And that meant anyone facing LeBron could never feel complete confidence that they would win.

If anything, the past two mostly LeBron-less NBA postseasons have served as a reminder of how incredibly difficult it is to win playoff basketball games consistently. Star players compete every other day for two months, playing 80-plus percent of the minutes every game, with the entirety of the opponent’s gameplan, emotional energy, and crowd buzz aimed toward the target on your head. Paths to the basket vanish and pet plays are smoked out. Nobody can stay on the court unless they are excellent on both sides of it. Star players are made or exposed.

And during those two years, everyone from back-to-back MVP Nikola Jokic to young stars like Trae Young and Devin Booker have been smacked in the face with that reality of the NBA postseason. While NBA fans have argued about the legitimacy of the Bubble and whether injuries place an asterisk on the 2020 and 2021 championships, the league’s best players have vied for the top rung on the ladder, which may be the place where Giannis is currently settled.

He is not representing his conference in the Finals this time around, but of any single player in the NBA, Giannis over the past two years has shown he will be standing in the way of anyone hoping for a ring. Last year, Giannis got revenge on Miami, outdueled Kevin Durant, then slammed the door on the Suns. This year, Giannis said goodnight to the outmatched Bulls and then, without Khris Middleton, gave the Celtics all they could handle in seven games before he quite simply ran out of gas.

In that second round matchup, Giannis became the first player ever to record 200 points, 100 rebounds, and 50 assists in one playoff series. His fingerprints were all over every single thing Milwaukee did, as he registered a 41.5 percent usage rate and a 39.4 percent assist rate. And he was only on the bench for 56 total minutes in seven games.

It’s difficult to say there’s anything more at all that Giannis could have done. Middleton’s injury came at the worst possible time, particularly because he has a reputation for giving the team that knocked Milwaukee out of the playoffs headaches. The Bucks never found a PJ Tucker replacement. They dealt Donte DiVincenzo for Serge Ibaka at the trade deadline as a hedge against Brook Lopez’s back issues, then played Ibaka a total of three minutes and four seconds against the Celtics. After giving up two second-round picks for Grayson Allen and signing him to a $20 million extension, Milwaukee was burned as Allen struggled mightily in the conference semis. In Game 7, it took an all-time role player performance from Celtics forward Grant Williams and some of Jayson Tatum’s best shot-making for Boston to pull away in the final 24 minutes.

These are the breaks of the NBA playoffs, and Boston suffered its fair share as well. In spite of all of it, though, Giannis still entered the second half of Game 7 with a chance.

Sure, he lost, but for much of the series, the Bucks could have looked confidently toward June and seen only their old foes in Miami standing in the way of another Finals appearance. They were in that position because of Giannis. And the Celtics went to Miami for Game 1 precisely because they beat Giannis.

Only once every generation or so does a player emerge who is capable of getting his team that close simply because he walks onto the court. It’s probably too early, after two dominant postseasons, to call this the Giannis era. But if we are in the final days of the LeBron era, Giannis has put himself in position to be the person who takes up residency on the throne.

Rand Paul Seems Really Hung Up On Japanese Quail That May Or May Not Be More ‘Sexually Promiscuous…When You Give Them Cocaine’

Every party has a pooper and the Republicans have Rand Paul. As Mediaite reports, Paul hopped up on his soap box on Tuesday to complain about quails hopped up on cocaine. The topic at hand? Sending $40 billion in aid to help the people of Ukraine to continue fighting against Russia and Putin, who he seems to like a lot.

“If the defense of Ukraine is really in our national security interests, shouldn’t the gift come from our military budget?” Paul asked from the Senate floor. “What about cutting wasteful spending? My office cataloged over $50 billion in waste.”

For Paul, this is where the real fun of his job is—in noting the many wild ways in which our government is wasting your money. Among the things they’re doing right now, according to the Kentucky senator: Conducting $1 million study to determine whether “taking selfies of yourself while smiling, and then looking at these selfies later on, makes you feel good.” Seems like a fair tradeoff, but cutting $1 million isn’t going to get us to $40 billion anytime soon—but Paul has a plan for that, too:

“Couldn’t we cut the budget of the National Science Foundation that spends billions of dollars studying such burning questions as: Do Panamanian city frogs have a different mating call than the country frogs? Couldn’t we maybe cut the $2 million the NIA spent studying cafeterias to see if someone sneezes in front of you sneezes on the food, whether you’re more or less likely to eat that food.”

But Paul saved the best for last: “Couldn’t we maybe cut the money spent on Japanese quail, and studying whether or not they’re more sexually promiscuous… when you give them cocaine?”

Obviously, the answer to that last question is “no, we cannot cut that funding,” as Paul no doubt knows. Particularly as he has cited that particular study several times before, mentioning it before in 2018, and then again in 2021. But as Mediaite points out, that study concluded years ago—even before Paul first mentioned it in 2018. As Michael Luciano writes for Mediaite:

As the Washington Post noted last year, “You can look up data on NIH grants. This particular research was called “Enhancement of Sexual Motivation” and it did, in fact, receive $873,503 from the agency over the course of its progress. But that funding ended more than five years ago. It ended before Paul raised it in 2018.”

The Post cited an article in Scientific American pointing out that while the study sounds ridiculous on its face, it may have broader implications for humans.

“There is already an extensive literature on drugs like cocaine, how it impacts various behaviors and how it acts in, and changes, the brains,” said the publication. “But we don’t know everything by any means, and we certainly don’t know enough about mechanism to treat cocaine addiction effectively. Studies to understand how cocaine impacts every behavior are important to our understanding of the drug and how we can combat its effects.” The Senate is set to vote on the aid package this week because last week Paul objected when Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) attempted to pass it via unanimous consent.

Take that, Rand.

Lizzo Asked Chris Evans To Play Piano On Her New Album, ‘Special’

Lizzo’s new album, Special, is set for release on July 15, but we don’t know much about the album yet. There’s the single “About Damn Time,” of course, but there’s not a ton of info about the LP beyond that. Now, though, Lizzo has pulled back the curtain a little bit, revealing that, despite her best efforts, the album will not feature Chris Evans playing piano.

On a new episode of Spout Podcast, Lizzo said, “I literally hit him up and was like, ‘Play piano on my album,’ and he just said, ‘Haha.’ It would have been really cool, but unfortunately not this time.”

Yes, Evans is a capable pianist, as the actor reminded fans last October by playing a portion of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”

Lizzo also addressed internet rumors that the new album features a duet with Harry Styles. Lizzo didn’t actually outright debunk the idea, saying, “That is so funny. The internet going to internet. That’s all I’ll say about that.” Lizzo also said of the LP, “I think people are going to be really surprised at how many love songs are on this album.”

Elsewhere, she spoke about why she thinks her Amazon Prime show Watch Out For The Big Grrrls is building a strong connection with audiences, saying, “I think it’s because of the stories. I couldn’t have found better human beings to represent the big girls. They are so talented, so beautiful, and so willing to be vulnerable. And I think vulnerability is, you know, everyone has like a bullsh*t detector these days, like, we can read through bullsh*t. And I think none of these girls are bullish. All of these girls are 100 percent real. And I think people really connect with that.”

JID Backs Up John Legend On The R&B Star’s Groovy New Single, ‘Dope’

JID’s public profile has been growing at an impressive clip this year, in large part because of his contribution to the uber-popular Imagine Dragons song “Enemy,” which features on Netflix’s League Of Legends-inspired animated series Arcane. His standing looks to take another big leap as he links up with another Top 40 favorite in John Legend for Legend’s new single “Dope.” A groovy track that gives 2000s-era Neptunes production vibes, the track finds Legend singing about a paramour that “shows me what dope means.”

Meanwhile, JID finds a way to balance his lightspeed, tongue-twisting flows with the song’s more pop-leaning sensibilities, contributing a verse that might be a little hard to sing along to but won’t trip up dedicated Legend fans who might not yet be aware of JID’s popularity with rap diehards.

The song’s just the latest indication that JID’s long-awaited follow-up to the fan-favorite 2018 album DiCaprio 2 is on the way, even without any official word from JID. Of course, he’s kept his fans well-fed in the years since, contributing to projects from the likes of Conway, Doja Cat, Denzel Curry, his Dreamville compatriots like Lute, and his own Atlanta-based collective Spillage Village. Most recently, he was featured on Dreamville’s new Gangsta Grillz tape D-Day after dropping his comeback single “Surround Sound,” but all these tidbits and teasers are only heightening the anticipation for his next solo album, which hopefully drops sometime this year.

The Nets Will Meet With Kyrie Irving About An Extension To ‘See If It’s The Right Fit For Both Sides’

Kyrie Irving owns a $36.9 million player option for the 2022-23 season. If he decides to opt out, he is eligible for a four-year, $189.7 million extension from the Brooklyn Nets or a four-year, $182.1 million deal from a different team. Only Brooklyn can offer a fifth year, at which point Irving’s new contract would be worth $245.6 million across five seasons. If he exercises his player option, he could ink a three- or four-year extension with Brooklyn.

Nets general manager Sean Marks said the organization has yet to engage in discussions with Irving about a new contract, but Marks, Irving, and Nets owner Joe Tsai will meet at some point to assess whether the partnership is “the right fit.”

“I look forward to getting in a room with him and Joe and his team, and we will,” Marks told YES Network. “We’ll see what it looks like for Kyrie moving forward here, and what he needs from us and so forth.

“So, again, it wouldn’t be right for me to comment on what hypothetical could happen, because we don’t know. We haven’t had those conversations with Kyrie yet. But when they do, we’ll see if it’s the right fit for both sides.”

During his three seasons in Brooklyn, Irving has struggled to stay on the court. Injuries, personal leaves, and a refusal to adhere to New York City’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate have all factored into his absences. He’s missed 126 of 238 games as a member of the Nets, including 53 of 86 this year.

Chelsea Handler Shared A Topless Goodbye Message To Ellen DeGeneres, Because She’s Chelsea Handler

Chelsea Handler made her whole brand in 2007-2013 just being a chill girl who is also pretty chaotic and doesn’t care about what people think. It worked then, it doesn’t work quite as well now, but hey, she can do what she wants!

The comedian, along with David Spade and Kevin Hart, filmed a farewell video for Ellen Degeneres as she finishes up her final season of the most toxic talk show work environment in Hollywood. Hart and Spade made some run-of-the-mill retirement jokes: Hart gifted DeGeneres with a lifetime supply of soup and a blanket, while Spade lightly roasted the comedian for constantly pranking her guests.

Handler, on the other hand, took a different approach and said a quick goodbye while topless. “I would show you my breasts but we’ve already seen them so I’ll just sit like this and tell you that I am so proud of you,” Handler said while taking off her top. “You are a rock star. You made this work for 19 years and that’s a long f*cking time so go have fun, and you know what that means.” What does it mean? Is she going to make music with Machine Gun Kelly?

The final episodes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show air next week after nearly two decades on television. Just think: we all have Dakota Johnson to thank for this.

How To Make The New York Sour, The Centuries-Old, Newly Trendy Cocktail Everyone’s Talking About

I’ve been seeing the New York Sour everywhere lately — IG stories, TikTok, Google News Feeds. Hell, I went to lunch with an old friend this week and he regaled me about the New York Sours a bartender made for him over the weekend. As an old-school bartender from the very highest end of the scene, I nodded along knowingly. Cocktails come and go, sometimes multiple times over actual centuries. The New York Sour is one of those cocktails.

This is a drink dating all the way back to the mid-1800s. Ironically, this was probably created in Chicago as the “continental sour” but was renamed the “New York Sour” at some point, and here we are. Since then, there have been a lot of variations, but the fundamentals have remained the same: A whiskey sour with a float of dry red wine. That’s really it. But that also means you need a pretty steady hand to float the wine in between the cocktail and the egg white foam on top. Some bartenders will shake up a whiskey sour without egg white and float some red wine on top … that’s fine, I guess, but sort of misses the point of the presentation (and it’s lazy).

Long story short, this just takes practice. Practice shaking up a nice and frothy whiskey sour in general and practice floating wine betwixt two layers of a cocktail. So let’s dive into the recipe and get you started on your New York Sour journey.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. rye whiskey
  • 1 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 small egg white
  • 1 oz. dry red wine
  • Ice
  • Lemon peel

These are all very findable ingredients. I’m using Woodford Reserve Rye simply because I have a bottle of it to kill. Use the rye or bourbon you like. I’m also using dry Italian wine from the grocery store. Again, use one that you like.

Lastly, try and use a small egg (the box should tell you the size somewhere on it). A small egg white will be about half the size of a large egg white. You need about 0.75 ounces of egg white for this so you can just measure it out from whatever eggs you have.

What You’ll Need:

  • Rocks glass
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Hand juicer
  • Paring knife
  • Jigger
  • Barspoon

Method:

  • Fill a rocks glass with fresh ice.
  • Add the whiskey, lemon, egg white, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.
  • Affix the lid without ice and dry shake for about 20 to 30 seconds. Make sure to hold the lid while you do, otherwise it’ll pop since no vacuum is created thanks to the lack of ice. Science!
  • Remove the lid and add a handful of ice. Re-affix the lid and shake vigorously for another 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Strain the cocktail over the fresh ice in the rocks glass. Make sure to shake out all the foam into the glass.
  • Very gently pour the red wine in a slow stream on the very edge of the glass so that the wine floats between the cocktail and foam on top.
  • Slice a thin peel of lemon and spritz the oils over the glass and place the peel on the edge as a garnish. Serve.

A quick note: If you want to get that perfect “flag” presentation, with exact lines between each layer, use a six-ounce glass and prechill it, and then don’t use ice in the glass.

Bottom Line:

This is pretty damn tasty. Since the cocktail is so much denser than the wine, you get a nice mix of the sour and the wine on each sip. It really should never fully mix together if you just sip it.

The lemon and whiskey are a match made in heaven, with spicy/woody and vanilla notes playing with bright lemon oils. Plus, the egg white creates a beautiful velvety mouthfeel. Seriously, it’s like silk.

As for the red wine float, it does add a nice tannic dryness to the lemon meringue. It’s a good balance that works, probably why this drink has lasted nearly three centuries. Just keep that hand steady and slow as you float that red wine.

Geraldo Claims He Saw UFOs While ‘Stoned On Ecstasy’

UFOs are a hot topic right now, as reports of UFO sightings have been on the rise and the government is now getting involved to get to the bottom of exactly what is happening. So of course the brain trust at The Five on Fox News wanted to get in on discussing these events, as Mediaite reports.

After Jesse Watters and Emily Compagno joked about the entire thing, Watters asked Geraldo Rivera if he thought it was the government’s place to investigate these sightings. Rather than really answer the question, Geraldo instead shared a story about his own UFO encounter.

“I’ve sailed around the world, I’ve seen a lot of clear skies,” Rivera explained, just as his comment took a sharp turn. “I’ve seen satellites, which are kind of spooky, weather balloons stray aircraft. The only time I ever saw a UFO, I was stoned on ecstasy.”

So just what did the guy who was on live TV when he found nothing in Al Capone’s vault do about it? “I steered around it, and I went back the other way,” he explained. “It just tracked me everywhere I went.”

In 2019, Rivera appeared on an episode of the Travel Channel series Famously Afraid, in which he shared a story about the time he and his wife saw a UFO from their boat. Was it the same night? Was he tripping balls in that story, too? The truth is out there.

Taylor Swift Delivers A Fun And Insightful Commencement Speech At NYU After Receiving An Honorary Doctorate

Taylor Swift did not attend college, which is fair considering she started her path towards international music superstardom with her 2006 self-titled debut album, which she released when she was just a teenager. So, today is a big day for her, as she received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from New York University (NYU). She made it clear she was thrilled about the whole thing this morning when she shared a video of herself donning her cap and gown and getting ready for today’s commencement ceremony.

She wasn’t just there to get her honorary doctorate, though, as at the Yankee Stadium graduation, she also delivered a commencement speech (technically, the “Response On Behalf Of The Honorary Degree Recipients,” per the 2022 ceremony program).

During her speech, she noted, “I’d like to thank NYU for making me, technically, on paper, at least, a doctor.” She added she’s not the kind of doctor you’d want around for an emergencies, unless those emergencies were about writing pop songs or naming “over 50 breeds of cats in one minute.” She also offered some nuggets of wisdom, like, “Life can be heavy, especially if you try to carry it all at once.” Elsewhere, she reflected on her own journey through the music industry and her life.

The ceremony program notes of Swift, “Taylor Swift is a trailblazing and influential advocate for artists’ rights in the face of exploitation and a forceful global advocate against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. An 11-time Grammy winner, she is one of the most prolific and celebrated artists of her generation.”

This comes after NYU offered a course about Swift this past semester, which was described, “This course proposes to deconstruct both the appeal and aversions to Taylor Swift through close readings of her music and public discourse as it relates to her own growth as an artist and a celebrity. Through readings, lectures and more, the class delves into analyses of the culture and politics of teen girlhood in pop music, fandom, media studies, whiteness and power as it relates to her image and the images of those who have both preceded and succeeded her. We’ll also consider topics like copyright and ownership, American nationalism, and the ongoing impact of social media on the pop music industry.”
