Nelly Is Being Sued By His Former Group, St. Lunatics, Over Unpaid Royalties From ‘Country Grammar’

Millennials are having it rough lately; in addition to dismal employment, housing, and romantic prospects all around, our nostalgic memories of our childhoods — all we have to hold onto, really — have been upended a whole bunch in recent months.

The latest upheaval: Nelly is being sued by members of his former group, St. Lunatics, over songwriting credits and royalties from his hit debut album, Country Grammar. Released in 2000 to widespread acclaim and truly breathtaking commercial success — it spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — Country Grammar spawned three top-40 hits: “E.I.,” “Ride Wit Me,” and the title track. It also launched the St. Lunatics’ empire, which consisted of sneakers, energy drinks, clothing lines, and even an appearance in NBA Street Vol. 2 as playable characters.

Unfortunately, according to Ali, City Spud, Kyjuan, and Murphy Lee, Nelly did not give them fair credit on the album, keeping them from being properly paid for a number of its tracks which they say they helped co-write (the group’s sixth member, Slo Down, is not included as a plaintiff). Although various members are listed as co-writers throughout the album, they say they weren’t credited on “Country Grammar,” “Steal the Show,” “Thicky Thick Girl,” and “Wrap Sumden.”

Nelly has previously acknowledged that his friends wrote on those songs (it’s no secret that he was never the strongest lyricist in the group, and that they rallied behind him specifically to get their foot in the door as a collective). However, the lawsuit says, “Despite repeatedly promising plaintiffs that they would receive full recognition and credit… it eventually became clear that defendant Haynes had no intention of providing the plaintiffs with any such credit or recognition.”

According to Billboard, though, the case could be complicated by the St. Lunatics claiming ownership rather than infringement, as “copyright infringement lawsuits can be filed decades after an infringing song is released, disputes over copyright ownership face a stricter three-year statute of limitations.”

As for why it took the group so long to pursue legal action, they explain, “Unfortunately, plaintiffs, reasonably believing that their friend and former band member would never steal credit for writing the original compositions, did not initially pursue any legal remedies.” After retaining legal counsel and reaching out to Universal Music Publishing Group, they were referred to Nelly’s attorneys, who they say “expressly repudiated” their claims in 2021.

Nelly, of course, sold half of his catalog in 2023 for $50 million. He’s not just facing civil issues at the moment, either; he was arrested in August for possession of ecstasy.

GloRilla Kicks Off Her ‘Glorious’ Rollout With The Rambunctious ‘Hollon’ Video

One thing GloRilla is good at: giving fans rambunctious singalong anthems with crowd-pleasing chants set to soul-shaking beats. Her latest is “Hollon” — as in “hold on” with that inscrutable Memphis accent of hers — and it’s a stern warning to not start with Glo, because she’ll certainly end it. As she puts it in the first verse: “you must not know what you just started / Me and my bitches go gnarly / Give a f*ck about this party / We gon’ step on sh*t regardless.”

The single is the first from GloRilla’s heavily anticipated debut album Glorious, which she announced today after a busy year that included joining Megan Thee Stallion on tour, releasing a hit mixtape, Ehhthang Ehhthang (told y’all about that accent), getting arrested for a DUI, performing at the BET Awards and the MTV VMAs, and receiving the key to the city of Memphis.

Glorious, which takes inspiration from GloRilla’s real name, Gloria, is due for release on October 11. It also might not be the last project she releases in the near future, as she and Megan Thee Stallion both expressed interest in recording a joint album. Stay tuned.

You can watch the video for “Hollon” above.

Glorious will be out on 10/11 via CMG/Interscope. Find more information here.

Schoolboy Q Gets Animated In The Videos For ‘Thank God 4 Me’ And ‘Lost Times’

Although it has been over six months since Schoolboy Q released his new album, Blue Lips, the California rapper supports the album today with two new music videos. The first, for “Lost Times,” sees Q reimagine classic cartoon characters with darker skin to draw attention to the way popular media — even children’s cartoons — erased Black contributions to culture. Among the references are Snow White, Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, and Tweety Bird of Looney Tunes, and Mickey Mouse. You can watch the video above.

In the second video, “Thank God 4 Me,” more abstract but traditional imagery permeates an antsy, paranoid visual companion of one of the more bipolar tracks from the album. While the majority of the song revolves around a soothing sample of Julius Brockington’s “Forty-Nine Reasons,” the beat switches to a jumpy, horn-driven fight anthem that evokes the reckless, forceful energy of Waka Flocka Flame’s “O Let’s Do It.” You can check it out below.

Blue Lips was a triumphant comeback for Q after five years away from the limelight, earning a spot on the Best Hip-Hop Albums Of March 2024 from Uproxx. What kept him away all that time? Golf. Since releasing the album, he’s been on a North American promotional tour, interrupted by a cancelation in Toronto, which he jokingly blamed on Drake and his participation in Kendrick Lamar’s Pop Out concert during the two rappers’ beef.

Future Laments Moving ‘Too Fast’ In Love In His First Video From ‘Mixtape Pluto’

Although Future is calling his new album Mixtape Pluto, he’s not straying too far away from the heartbroken habits that got him where he is. In the video for “Too Fast,” the first(!) single from the album, Future laments moving too quickly in love and letting his guard down too easily — especially when it comes to his bank account. In the chorus, Future lists all the gifts he’s given to women who only broke his heart in the end, coming to the conclusion that he’s got to do better research if he’s going to be spending all this money.

“Bought a Patek, I was movin’ too fast,” he worries. “New G-Wagon, I was movin’ too fast / Got the condo, I was movin’ too fast / Only sorry ’cause I was movin’ too fast / So we said I knew it wasn’t gon’ last.”

Mixtape Pluto is Future’s first solo project since 2022’s I Never Liked You, which generated Future’s first No. 1 single, “Wait For U” with Drake and Tems. However, it’s his third project this year overall after he dropped two collaborative albums with Metro Boomin: We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You.

You can watch the video for “Too Fast” above.

Mixtape Pluto is out now via Freebandz/Epic. You can find more info here.

Tommy Richman Turns Up The Tempo On ‘Whitney,’ His Latest ‘Coyote’ Single

So far, the rollout for Tommy Richman’s debut album Coyote has consisted of contemplative mid-tempo cruisers like his breakout hit “Million Dollar Baby” and its follow-ups “Devil Is A Lie” and “Thought You Were The One.” Lest listeners get too sleepy slogging through a bunch of samey-sounding singles, Richman turns up the tempo on his latest, “Whitney.” A toe-tapping, groovy dance jam, “Whitney” sees Tommy applying his signature falsetto to much more pulse-moving percussion that takes cues from nu-disco and a bit of new wave kick drum.

In a press release about Coyote, Richman decries criticizes that he only has one a single mode of songwriting, saying, “I’ve been building up my discography for years. I’m not a one-hit-wonder.”

Hey look, even if he was, it’s still a pretty impressive feat to earn acknowledgement from former President Barack Obama, who put “Million Dollar Baby” on his annual summer playlist alongside standouts from the likes of Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, Saweetie, and Shaboozey. Brent Faiyaz may have given him a leg up, but he’s definitely taken the torch and run with it.

You can listen to Tommy Richman’s “Whitney” above and see the full tracklist below.

Coyote is due on September 27 via ISO Supremacy/PULSE Records. Get more information here.

Bon Iver Returns With The Slow-Burning ‘SPEYSIDE’ Video To Announce A New Project, ‘SABLE’

Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver, began teasing something new earlier this month, leading many of his fans to speculate he might have a new album on the way after five years, and just a couple of days ago, he announced a new single, “SPEYSIDE” (stylized as “S P E Y S I D E”). Featuring Vernon singing and playing guitar, regular collaborator Rob Moose playing viola, and production from Vernon and Jim-E Stack, “SPEYSIDE” arrived with a black-and-white music video, in which Vernon sits in a recording space barefoot strumming his guitar.

The new single was also accompanied by some news that should be exciting for fans: Vernon’s releasing a new collection of music, his first since 2019’s i,i. It’s called Sable, and it’ll consist of a three-song EP releasing via Jagjaguwar on October 18. According to a press release, it was recorded “at April Base in Wisconsin, but conceived in places like Key West and the Isles of Minneapolis.” The stripped-down arrangements will focus on Vernon’s vocal and guitar, with lyrics grappling with “projections of guilt, anguish and turmoil,” as well as what it means to be Bon Iver, which Vernon describes as “playing a part.” However, after getting himself together and thinking “thinking increasingly about the process of healing” in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting shutdowns, Vernon’s clearly ready to get back to business.

You can watch Bon Iver’s “SPEYSIDE” video above.

Sable is due on 10/18 via Jagjaguwar. You can find more information here.

Aaron Rodgers Pushed Away Robert Saleh Trying To Hug Him After A Jets Touchdown

rodgers-saleh-top
Prime Video

The New York Jets offense finally came to life in their Week 3 game on Thursday night against the New England Patriots. Aaron Rodgers looked the best he has as a Jet in the first half against their AFC East rivals, going 15-for-20 for 170 yards and a touchdown, leading New York to a 14-3 advantage at the break.

Despite a fantastic half offensively (that could’ve looked better if not for a missed field goal at the end), it didn’t seem Rodgers was completely thrilled with everything going on with the Jets. After the Jets scored their second touchdown to go up 14-0, Rodgers came over to the sideline and was greeted Robert Saleh, but the veteran QB didn’t seem thrilled with his head coach, pushing away Saleh’s attempt at hugging him after a quick dap.

While we’ve seen celebrations where guys will push each other in excitement, this seemed like something a bit different, as Rodgers had a little something to say to Saleh as he pushed away. I would guess both parties will be asked about this after the game and brush it aside, so I wouldn’t expect any clarity on what really went on here (especially if New York cruises to a win), but it was a bit odd given how well the first half went for the Jets and will undoubtedly be something that gets talked about on Friday.

Shohei Ohtani Is So Good He Made LeBron James Say ‘Wowzers’

Shohei Ohtani is very good at baseball. We all know this — he’s one of the best hitters and pitchers on the planet — but on Thursday afternoon, he entered rarefied air in more ways than one. Ohtani had one of the best individual games that we have ever seen a baseball player have, as he went 6-for-6 with three home runs, 10 RBIs, and a pair of stolen bases in a 20-4 Los Angeles Dodgers win over the Miami Marlins.

Not only did Ohtani put up a ridiculous box score, but the multiple homers and stolen bases made him the first player in MLB history to enter the 50/50 club — he officially has 51 home runs and 51 steals on the season. He’s also the first player in the lengthy history of the Dodgers to go yard 50 times in a season. In every way, Ohtani is a phenom, and in fact, he’s so good that there was only one word that fellow Los Angeles star athlete LeBron James could use to sum him up: Wowzers.

Twitter

Something about LeBron James saying “wowzers” is very funny to me, but also, it perfectly sums up just how much of a freak Ohtani is. Unfortunately, James did not use an all-time great LeBron-ism that he has used in the past while discussing baseball on Twitter: #JustMyThoughtsComingFromASportsJunkieRegardlessMyOwnSportIPlay.

The WNBA Playoff field was officially set after the Connecticut Sun blew out the Chicago Sky and the Atlanta Dream beat the New York Liberty on the final night of the regular season. Those results meant Connecticut was locked in as the 3-seed, while the Dream would make it as the 8-seed, ending any final day drama with the standings, even with three late games still yet to tip-off.

With those results, each team knew who they’d face in their best-of-3 first round series which will start with all four Game 1s on Sunday.

1. New York Liberty vs. 8. Atlanta Dream

4. Las Vegas Aces vs. 5. Seattle Storm

The WNBA also was able to finalize the TV schedule for Games 1 and 2 in each first round series, which will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC. Game 3s, if necessary, will be played on ESPN2 on Thursday and Friday, but timing on those games will be dependent on whether there are one or two games that night. In the least surprising news, the lone ABC game will be Caitlin Clark’s playoff debut with the Fever in Connecticut, while the rest of the Game 1s (and all of the Game 2s) will be on ESPN.

Will Smith Is Co-Producing A Queen Latifah Biopic, Which She Is Also Producing

Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be an increase in the sheer volume of musical biography films lately? Just in the past year, we’ve had Bob Marley: One Love, Back To Black, and Maestro, and looking forward, there are films in development about The Beatles, Pharrell, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, and Linda Ronstadt.

But hopefully, you’re not all biopicked out, because another name has been added to that list, and it’s one to actually get excited about: Queen Latifah. According to Deadline, an upcoming biopic about the Kennedy Center honoree co-produced by Will Smith will be the first of a slew of hip-hop-focused bio films from Flavor Unit Entertainment (Latifah’s production company), Westbrook Studios (Smith’s), and Jesse Collins Entertainment (which produced The New Edition Story and The Bobby Brown Story).

Latifah and Smith have a long history together, as noted by both in their press release about the project, including the 1989 Grammys boycott that forced the Recording Academy to truly acknowledge hip-hop in its annual award show. “We all came into this industry together and Hip-Hop has shaped each and every one of us,” said Latifah. “Hip-Hop’s impact has expanded beyond just music and has created a lasting impression on culture and society overall. It is a dream to be able to collaborate with friends and colleagues that have not only a shared understanding, but are able to tell these stories that were the backdrop of our lives.”

Smith echoed. “When you bring talented people and teams together, you can create something truly special. I’m thrilled to work alongside Flavor Unit, Jesse Collins Entertainment and HarbourView, to highlight the incredible stories of some of our favorite artists and icons. There’s no better story to start with than the one of Queen Latifah, an undisputed legend who has both entertained and inspired us for so many years.”

Latifah’s previous production credits include films about Salt-N-Pepa and The Clark Sisters.
