Kehlani Says Getting Grammy Nominations ‘Hasn’t Changed Anything,’ But Not In A Bad Way, They Explain

Kehlani has fared well at the Grammys so far: No wins yet, but five lifetime nominations is more than most artists get. Kehlani have their best chance yet this year, too, with three total nominations, their most at a single show. Potential outcomes aside, Kehlani believes that ultimately, her nominations haven’t changed anything, but not in a bad way.

In a recent interview with CBS (here’s the clip) ahead of this year’s Grammys, Kehlani was asked how being a Grammy nominated artist has “affected or changed” their life, and the artist explained:

“I wanna say — and this is in the most respectful and grateful way — that it hasn’t changed anything. These things shouldn’t shape your perception of your art as an artist. They should just confirm that you’re getting better at telling your story.”

Kehlani also spoke about their lyrics resonating with supporters, saying, “I mean, they’re everything. That’s really where my heart is. I think I’m really honest, and I think I’m vulnerable, and I think that I’ve never been afraid to be in the wrong with my writing, or tell the truth about sensitive subjects. And I think that that’s the biggest validation you can get, is humans connecting with their hearts with what you do.”

When Does ‘The Recruit’ Season 2 Stream On Netflix With Noah Centineo?

The Recruit
Netflix

The Night Agent is many things: Netflix juggernaut, compulsively watchable spy thriller, chock full of chemistry between Gabriel Basso and Luciane Buchanan. One thing that The Night Agent is not, however, is a comedy. That’s where fellow spy series The Recruit comes in with Noah Centineo happy to throw himself into absurd situations with action scenes aplenty. Both Netflix shows bring the espionage vibes, but The Recruit is like a landing ramp after the near constant adrenaline jolts encouraged by watching The Night Agent. Sometimes you just want to watch an actor laugh at himself, you know?

Fortunately, that’s about to happen with a new season of former romcom king Centineo’s CIA lawyer heading into punching bag mode.

When Does The Recruit Season 2 Stream On Netflix

The spy-workplace comedy returns on January 30, 2025. Netflix’s season description is brief: “CIA Lawyer Owen Hendricks is pulled into a life-threatening espionage situation in South Korea, only to realize that the bigger threat just might be coming from inside the Agency.” The below trailer also heavily implies that Owen Hendricks is an “American Idiot,” and you know what? Good on Green Day. And good on Centineo for having a sense of humor.

The Recruit, which isn’t as popular as The Night Agent but is funny as hell, is currently streaming a first season on Netflix.

Indie Mixtape 20: Rapt Is Enrapturing On ‘Until The Light Takes Us’

Rapt FEATURED
David Nix

Once upon a time, Jacob Ware was a black metal musician. He was the founding bassist of Enslavement, and he has transcribed that penchant for noisy barrage to document heavy lyrical material over soft, verdant indie-folk as Rapt. Until The Light Takes Us, the Londoner’s fifth album under the alias, portrays devastating scenes set to the most gorgeous nylon guitars imaginable.

There’s his neighbor who dies on his birthday from throat cancer; there’s the rumination on World War I body counts; there are battles with chronic disease. It’s all set to atmospheric piano and finger-picked acoustic guitars, lending Ware’s words a significant weight. Above all, though, Rapt’s latest work is an exploration of death itself and its inevitability. We won’t go until the light takes us, so we may as well marvel at its luminosity.

Ahead of the album’s release in February, Ware sat down with Uproxx to talk about Roger Waters, nylon string guitar, vegan junk food, and more in our latest Q&A.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Slightly Unhinged Indie Folk

It’s 2050 and the world hasn’t ended and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

If I’m on the Earth still, I’ll be making music; there will be no reason to remember it. My ultimate goal in life is to die with a large body of work to be buried with. Maybe a coffin made from records!

Who’s the person who has most inspired your work, and why?

Damien Jurado – for many reasons, primarily his lyricism, his voice, how prolific he is and how you can track his evolution as an artist. I feel he started to peak and produce his best work pretty deep into his discography – his 13th album The Horizon Just Laughed is an utterly sublime masterwork.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life and what was it?

I’m an unashamed fan of vegan junk food so What The Pitta’s Doner Kebab + loaded fries.

Tell us about the best concert you’ve ever attended.

Roger Waters’ The Wall – problematic dude, incredible live show and artist.

What song never fails to make you emotional?

Damien Jurado – “The Last Great Washington State”

What’s the last thing you Googled?

‘Cheap Vinyl Pressing Uk’ + ‘How to replace bathtub sealant’

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever crashed while on tour?

Played a show where a local regular at the bar put us up – the room had NOTHING in it other than a mattress on the floor – totally empty other than an empty photo frame on the wall… The rest of the flat wasn’t much different, very kind guy though.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform and what’s the city you hope to perform in for the first time?

Would love to perform in Belfast, I have family there and love the city. How I haven’t I’m not sure. Going to give a boring answer and say my home-city Brighton is my favourite place to play.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Don’t listen to your future self, if you do you risk not being where you are in 2025. Do it all again, how I did with no regrets and never look back.

What’s one of your hidden talents?

I grow tobacco pretty successfully and can have a good shot at identifying if cigars are Cuban, Nicaraguan, or from the Dominican Republic by taste.

If you had a million dollars to donate to charity, what cause would you support and why?

Epilepsy Action. Epilepsy undid my teens and early twenties. I’m forever blessed it is long behind me (for now… but you never know). People are ignorant about how devastating a condition it can be for people that don’t respond to treatment. It takes your soul. SUDEP is bleak.

What are your thoughts about AI and the future of music?

AI can never express human pain and love. I’m not worried. Also, I wish AI luck trying to replicate the nuance of a nylon string guitar.

You are throwing a music festival. Give us the dream lineup of 5 artists that will perform with you and the location it would be held.

Grouper, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Joni Mitchell, Damien Jurado, and Neil Halstead – Live at the Union Chapel (London).

Who’s your favorite person to follow on social media?

I resist the idea of Social Media actually bleeding into my lived experience.

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

My only tattoo is not having a tattoo – it’s a minimalist design.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Becoming more and more nervous by the minute until I go on stage – drink a ton of water – pace the streets outside the venue – wear huge winter gloves even in summer to make sure my hands are hot – notice how heavy my legs are as I walk onto stage – ride out the nerves till song 2 then enjoy/astral project out of my body.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

Probably Sandy Cheeks in SpongeBob Squarepants.

You have a month off and the resources to take a dream vacation. Where are you going and who is coming with you?

I’d do my dream vacation I did in 2023 again, but with my fluffy black terrier Dilly – a jaunt across Scandinavia starting in Bergen, then Oslo, Gothenburg and ending in Stockholm.

What is your biggest fear?

Dying alone, actually, if that happens I won’t care for long.

Until The Light Takes Us is out 2/21 via Start-Track. Find more information here.

‘Emo’ Chappell Roan Shares A Lovely Note To Her Fans, Especially The Queer Community, Ahead Of The Grammys

chappell roan acl

Even in the unlikely scenario where she doesn’t win a single Grammy this weekend, Chappell Roan has already made a bit of history. The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer is one of only 15 artists to be nominated for The Big Four — Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, and Best New Artist — at the same ceremony. This, and all the love she’s received from fans (the non-creepy ones) over the past year or so, is making her feel very “emo.”

“It’s Grammy week. I am very emo,” she wrote on Instagram. “My heart feels warm and fuzzy with all the support I have been given this past year. I hope you can understand that this has been incredible and scary and spiritual and confusing. I’ve been crying tears of joy and grief and feeling loved and lonely and free. Ultimately, I am grateful for every one of you who gave my music a little spin and showed your ass up to shows and festivals.”

Roan also hyped her Grammys set (“I love the performance we’re preparing for you all”) and added, “Just know when I’m up on stage, all I’m really feeling in my heart is love to the queer community especially those in places where it is unsafe to be yourself.”

The 67th Annual Grammy Awards air this Sunday, February 2, on CBS and stream on Paramount Plus. Besides Roan, the other announced performers include Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, Cynthia Erivo, Doechii, Raye, Sabrina Carpenter, Shakira, Stevie Wonder, and Teddy Swims.

Three De’Aaron Fox Trade Ideas We Could See At The Deadline

De'Aaron Fox (1024x450)
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

The Sacramento Kings are currently listening to trade offers for All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox, as he has indicated to the team that he doesn’t plan on signing an extension to stay past 2026 at this time. The Spurs are reportedly the preferred destination for Fox, as he would love the chance to play alongside Victor Wembanyama. That makes a lot of sense, but the Kings will want to do their due diligence in talking with the rest of the NBA, plus Fox is reportedly open to any deal.

Fox seems to want to go to a team that gives him a chance to contend not just in 2025, but will have a sizable window for the future. Many of the teams that fit that bill already have star guards (OKC, Cleveland, Memphis, Dallas, New York), while others lack the assets or financial flexibility to make a deal work (Minnesota). To me, there are three teams that make sense as rising contenders in need of a star point guard that also have the assets that could intrigue Sacramento. I think there’s a decent chance a Fox trade doesn’t happen until this summer, but if it does take place over the next eight days, one of these three teams figures to be in the mix.

San Antonio Spurs

Spurs get: De’Aaron Fox
Kings get: Chris Paul, Keldon Johnson, Atlanta’s 2025 and 2027 first-round picks, San Antonio’s 2026 first-round pick

We’ll start with what feels like the most likely destination, as Fox has reportedly indicated his preference is to end up in San Antonio to play alongside Victor Wembanyama. This would be the best asset-heavy package the Kings could get, which may or may not be what they want. Paul/Johnson combo makes the financials work and they’d get three first round picks for each of the next three years that figure to be in the late lottery to early 20s. The alternative for the Kings in trade talks with the Spurs is to push for fewer picks and try to land Stephon Castle, instead. The fourth overall pick from this past draft has had a good rookie season, but wants to play point guard and would obviously no longer be the PG of the future in San Antonio if they land Fox. A Castle/Johnson package would also work financially, although I’d guess San Antonio would look to pull a first round pick (or two) off the table if they’re including both of their high-upside youngsters.

Houston Rockets

Rockets get: De’Aaron Fox
Kings get: Jalen Green and Reed Sheppard
Pistons get: Jock Landale, 2026 second round pick

When word broke that Fox was going to be available, the other team that jumped to the top of most people’s minds as a great fit was Houston. The Rockets have been fantastic this season and are apparently planning on going through the deadline without making a major move, giving this group a chance to make a run as constructed. I’m not sure if that’s the best plan if someone like Fox is available, and while it’s possible he would still bolt in two years for the Spurs, they could make a strong case for the Houston native to stay with them on an extension. In this scenario, the Kings get back a pair of young guards in Jalen Green, who is having a career-year, and Reed Sheppard, the No. 3 pick in last year’s draft.

This trade would be easier to make in the summer once Green’s extension kicks in, and if we don’t see Fox moved in the next eight days, I’d expect Houston to strongly pursue that, especially if they have an earlier playoff exit than they hope. To do this now, you have to deal with Green’s poison pill provision, which makes him worth ~$29 million for Sacramento’s purposes but just ~$12 million for Houston’s, meaning they need to send out more salary to make it work. Enter the Pistons, who absorb Jock Landale’s deal into their cap space for the price of a second round pick. This is perhaps too high a price tag for the Rockets — they value Sheppard, even if he’s spent a ton of time in the G League this year — but I personally would sell high on Green to bring in a more proven, consistent performer in Fox that would make them a bigger threat right now. Plus Fox is only 27, so it’s not like he’ll be out of his prime any time soon.

Orlando Magic

Magic get: De’Aaron Fox
Kings get: Jonathan Isaac, Anthony Black, 2025 first round pick (via Denver)

The other young team on the rise in desperate need of a high-level scoring guard is Orlando. They’re one of the more risk-averse teams on the trade market, so I’m not sure that they’d be willing to part with a huge package without knowing whether Fox would stick around long-term, but I think they should at least inquire and see what the Kings asking price would be. There are a few combinations of players that make the money work, as they could do Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony, but my guess is Sacramento would be more interested in a Jonathan Isaac and Anthony Black package. Black would give the Kings some upside in the backcourt, while Isaac could be a needed defensive anchor next to Domantas Sabonis. It feels like the Magic will have to make a consolidation trade at some point and Fox, on paper, looks like a near-perfect fit. Pairing him with Jalen Suggs would give Orlando a pretty dynamic backcourt to go along with their stars on the wing in Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero.

As Variety notes, the newcomers include Stevie Wonder, Cynthia Erivo, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Lainey Wilson, Herbie Hancock, Brittany Howard, Brad Paisley, Janelle Monáe, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, St. Vincent, and Jacob Collier are set to appear.

They join a lineup that also includes Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Doechii, Raye, Sabrina Carpenter, Shakira, and Teddy Swims. Once again, Trevor Noah is hosting.

Beyond that, before the show is the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony, which will be broadcast live at 12:30 p.m. PT via YouTube and live.grammy.com. Performing at that event are Yolanda Adams, Wayne Brady, Deborah Cox, Scott Hoying, Angelique Kidjo, Taj Mahal, Joe Bonamassa, Joyce DiDonato, Béla Fleck, Renée Fleming, Muni Long, Kelli O’Hara, and Kevin Puts.

When Will ‘Severance’ Season 2 Episode 3 Be Available To Watch?

severance-s2-e3-lg
Apple TV+

You gotta hand it to Severance creator Dan Erickson and director Ben Stiller. They managed to launch the second season with compelling enough mysteries and mixed motives that almost make up for that three year wait. Reportedly also, the sci-fi thriller series has made $200 million for Apple TV+, although the tracking of that metric seems nebulous. These would have to be viewers who signed up for the tech giant’s streaming service and watched Severance and little else, at least right away. That also says nothing for anybody who happened to already subscribe, and/or receives the service free for three months after buying an Apple product, and/or uses a bundle subscription.

Grain of salt (in both directions) is all I’m saying. That’s the case for streaming data in general (what counts as a “watch”? and so on), but clearly, Severance is a successful show, one that makes people look forward to the next drop.

When Will Severance Season 2, Episode 3 Be Available?

January 31. This week’s episode is titled “Who Is Alive?” and arrives with the following description: “Mark and Helly return to an old haunt. Irving and Dylan make separate discoveries. Outie Mark tries something new.”

The above image suggests that Mark will throw himself further into discovering what happened to Gemma/Ms. Casey while Helly uncomfortably stands by or even assists. Apple TV+ also released this image indicating that Gwendoline Christie’s unfriendly-looking character will be on the scene, too. Eek.

Jamie xx And Erykah Badu’s ‘F.U.’ Makes The Most Of A Bad Set

They say every cloud has a silver lining — and Jamie xx took that saying literally when he made “F.U.” The new song, which appears on the deluxe edition of Jamie’s new album In Waves, which is out today, was inspired by a post-Primavera afterparty with Erykah Badu where everything went a little sideways. After an equipment malfunction, Badu jokingly took her engineers to task. Jamie recorded the lighthearted tirade, then revamped the phone recordings in a studio session with the singer.

There are five new songs on the deluxe edition of In Waves, including “F.U.,” “It’s So Good,” “Do Something,” “Let’s Do It Again,” and “Kill Dem.” You can listen to the album here, and see below for the remaining dates of Jamie xx’s ongoing In Waves tour, which includes a headlining set at Lightning In A Bottle Fest.

Julien Baker & Torres Go Country On Their Newly Announced Debut Album Together, ‘Send A Prayer My Way’

It’s been expected for months, and now it’s official: Julien Baker and Torres have made a country album together.

Send A Prayer My Way comes out on April 18 and includes the twangy “Sugar In The Tank,” which they performed on The Tonight Show, and new single “Sylvia.” Like all the best songs, the breezy track was inspired by a dog.

“The morning I went to pick up my dog Sylvia from an upstate shelter, I was at home making my coffee and I turned on WFMU and Dolly Parton’s ‘Cracker Jack’ was on,” Torres wrote in a statement. “I burst into tears — it felt like the universe was telling me she was going to be mine (Sylvia was only meant to be a foster). I remember thinking that I’d love to write a song like that, a song that people could feel in their chest within five seconds of turning on the radio, because anyone who has ever had the honor of sharing a home with a beloved pet knows that a pet is family. They’re the best friends you could ever have.”

You can watch the video for “Sylvia” above, and check out the tracklist and album cover for Send A Prayer My Way below.

MJ Lenderman Hits The NPR Tiny Desk For A Breezy Four-Song Set

MJ Lenderman performed on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series last year, as part of his band Wednesday. After that, though, he had a major year as a solo artist. His album Manning Fireworks was one of 2024’s best-received LPs and it fared really well on Uproxx’s recently released 2024 Critics Poll: It was the top-ranking indie album (and No. 4 overall) and two of its tracks made the top songs list, too.

All of that is to say that Lenderman has become a huge deal over the past year, and now he’s starting 2025 in the spotlight as NPR’s latest Tiny Desk performer.

Lenderman and his band — typically called The Wind but jokingly going by The Breeze for this stripped-back performance — busted out a four-song set consisting of “Wristwatch,” “Rip Torn,” “Catholic Priest,” and “You Don’t Know The Shape I’m In.”

Also today, Lenderman announced additional dates for his ongoing solo tour, adding shows in June and September.
