‘Twilight’ Director Catherine Hardwicke Reveals How They Snagged Robert Pattinson From The ‘Harry Potter’ Cast

As the Twilight renaissance rages on, the internet becomes blessed with more and more gems from the legendary vampire series. In a new episode of The Big Hit Show podcast, director Catherine Hardwicke reveals how they ended up casting Edward…by looking through the Harry Potter cast.

Twilight producer Eric Feig met with Summit executive Gillian Bohrer and looked through cast photos for the popular wizarding series when one face struck him. “I remember saying, ‘It’s someone Byronic. It’s someone British, I’m telling you, it’s someone who’s on a bluff staring off into the distance, looking romantic.’” They found that half longing, half absent stare in the face of a young Robert Pattinson.

Catherine Hardwicke recalls meeting Pattinson for the first time in her home. “He walked in and he had his hair was died black for some play, with these wacky bangs. He was a bit out of shape. His shirt was just all messy, and I’m like, ‘Ooh, okay. Okay, let’s see how this goes.’”

Pattinson then did a scene with Kristen Stewart. “Rob and Kristen auditioned on my bed, the kissing scene, Rob was so into it he fell off the bed. I’m like, ‘Dude, calm down.’” That’s when Hardwicke knew that she had found her brooding male lead, who was vastly different than his Harry Potter character, Cedric Diggory. Though they did share a common thread — one of them was undead, the other ended up dead. And now he’s Batman, so it all works out.

Phil Spencer Confirms That Microsoft Wants To Keep ‘Call Of Duty’ On The PlayStation

Call of Duty is one of the biggest franchises in all of gaming. Activision Blizzard’s yearly first-person shooter game is frequently one of the highest-selling games across every console. So when everyone found out that Microsoft, the producer of Xbox, was acquiring Activision Blizzard, there was immediate concern about what that may mean for the possibility of Call of Duty becoming an Xbox/PC exclusive, thereby leaving PlayStation owners in the cold.

On Thursday, Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Gaming, put all of those concerns to rest. In a tweet, Spencer confirmed that the hope is to keep Call of Duty on the PlayStation, as well as honor any contracts that Activision Blizzard currently has with other console producers.

This information from Spencer comes not too long after a Sony spokesperson told the The Wall Street Journal that it expects Microsoft to fulfill any Activision Blizzard contractual obligations.

This is great news for anyone who owns a PlayStation and was worried about the possibility of being unable to play Call of Duty. That said, we do wonder what Spencer and Microsoft’s grand plans are for the future of the franchise. We likely won’t know, though, until the acquisition of Activision Blizzard closes in 2023.

Sony Expects Microsoft To ‘Abide By Contractual Agreements’ With Activision Games

Huge news hit the gaming world earlier this week when it was announced that that Microsoft, producer of the Xbox, will purchase Activision Blizzard. One of the largest publishers in the industry, Activision Blizzard is best known as the company that publishes Call of Duty, along with numerous other IPs that span multiple consoles such as Overwatch, Crash Bandicoot, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

It makes sense that some gamers are concerned about potential console exclusivity. Microsoft could, in theory, stop publishing games from Activision Blizzard to competing consoles like the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. That theory might not hold as much weight as some of us initially thought, though. The Wall Street Journal recently asked a Sony spokesperson about this possibility, and it’s very clear that Sony expects Microsoft to fulfill Activision’s current contractual obligations to non-Microsoft platforms.

Sony Group Corp. said Thursday that it expected Microsoft Corp. to ensure that games from Activision Blizzard Inc. are available on non-Microsoft videogame platforms if Microsoft completes its proposed acquisition of Activision.

“We expect that Microsoft will abide by contractual agreements and continue to ensure Activision games are multiplatform,” a Sony spokesman said Thursday.

Right now, Microsoft and Activision Blizzard can’t inform any of us what it is considering for future plans with those IPs. Until the acquisition closes, which isn’t expected to happen until 2023, Microsoft can’t publicly state plans about what it wants to do with any of Activision’s IPs.

Hilary Duff Finally Reveals The Scrapped Lizzie McGuire Plot We All Wanted

Many, many bad things happened in 2020, and one of them was Disney+ deciding to squash the new Lizzie McGuire reboot. While fans were left with little details about the revival itself, Hilary Duff did confirm that many of the cast was set to reprise their original roles. A few of the episodes were even shot before Disney+ decided to pull the plug. The network never gave a reason, but in a new interview with Cosmopolitan, Duff revealed what went down.

Talking about the plot of the revival, Duff explained,“My character was moving back home with her parents because she caught her soon-to-be fiancé cheating on her, and she was falling flat on her face at the moment and being like, ‘I need to pivot because everything that I thought was wasn’t, and I’m turning 30. What the f*ck?’” she said.

Apparently, Disney+ thought the series was too mature for their target demographic, even though that would most likely be millennials who watched the original series and are now at that age. When asked if Duff ever thought about leaking the scrapped series, she said it crossed her mind, but ultimately decided against it.

“But I wouldn’t, because in my 34 years I’ve realized that everything does happen for a reason,” Duff continued. “There’s a time and a place for everything. It just wasn’t her moment. I’m constantly asked about it still. All it does is breathe life into the fact that people still want it, and that’s really sweet. It’s not dead, and it’s not alive.”

Even though fans won’t get the Lizzie revival anytime soon, Duff is starring in the How I Met Your Mother reboot, How I Met Your Father, which just premiered on Hulu. So, there is still hope for a Lizzie/Gordo reunion.

It Turns Out Jennifer Hough Only Dropped Her Harassment Suit Against Nicki Minaj To Refile In California

Just a week after it was reported that Jennifer Hough had dropped her harassment lawsuit against Nicki Minaj, a new development reveals that she intends to refile the case in California. According to Rolling Stone, Hough’s lawyer told a federal magistrate judge that the only reason they’d withdrawn their case against the rapper — which was filed in the Eastern District of New York — was to ensure that the case was tried in the correct jurisdiction.

The lawyer, Seven N. Gordon, said, “We plan to refile it in a court with proper jurisdiction.” Judge James R. Cho confirmed that Gordon intended to also refile the case against Kenneth Petty, Nicki’s husband, asking, “If you intend to refile the action in another jurisdiction, do you intend this case to follow as well?” However, Gordon said that consolidation of the harassment cases would depend on the outcome of Hough’s request for a default judgment in the case against Petty, whom she’s also suing for sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress from his 1995 conviction for attempted rape.

If awarded the default judgment, the sex assault claims would continue in New York, while the harassment claims would be consolidated in California, where Petty and Nicki Minaj now live. Meanwhile, Nicki’s lawyer again characterized the lawsuit as an attempted shakedown, telling Rolling Stone, “This is just a frivolous gambit to avoid a sanctions motion which I told them that I would be filing shortly and for which they refuse to set a schedule. As usual, they have decided to adopt a tactic without bothering to research the law. Had they done so, they would realize that re-filing their frivolous action in another jurisdiction will only result in another court sanctioning them.”

Hough filed the suit last August, saying that Nicki and Petty had tried to intimidate her into recanting her claim that Petty had tried to rape her at knifepoint in 1994 in an effort to get Petty removed from the sex offenders registry. Petty was indicted in 2020 for failing to register with his new address when the couple moved to LA in 2019. He pled guilty to failing to register around the time Hough filed her suit and is awaiting sentencing on March 30.

Ed Helms And Randall Park On ‘True Story’ And The Art Of Storytelling

“Funny, poignant, and heartbreaking” is how producer and co-host Ed Helms (The Office) describes his and Randall Park’s (WandaVision) new 6-episode Peacock series, True Story (which you can stream now). The show is structured a little like Comedy Central’s Drunk History with the use of star-filled reenactments to flesh out these stories. But the real charm comes from its blend of silliness and sincerity and seemingly mild-mannered storytellers, who roll out details from their adventures that are bound to shock and get a genuine response from Helms and Park, who have been given no prep for what they’re taking part in.

We spoke with the hosts/actors about their show, why they wanted to center it on true stories from real people, getting their friends to come play, and what makes a good storyteller.

I feel like I want to hear from people less and less, and you’re signing up for something where you want to hear more from people. What is it about just real storytellers, real people, telling you these stories that made you want to pursue this?

Ed Helms: So what I think is so cool about this format is it’s about human connection. We’re used to coming from a background where great writers sit down and they think about stories and they get stories really dialed in and really perfect. This is just more human and messy. And we just sit down and we hear people expressing these really unbelievable stories from their lives in the most honest and direct way. And I just love how human and direct it is. And tangible. And then, of course, by sharing and trusting us with these stories, they’re really allowing us to laugh with them at their own folly. Nobody laughs at themselves anymore in our culture. We’re all taking ourselves so seriously. This is just the warmest show I’ve had the privilege to be a part of.

Randall Park: Yeah. And there’s a real, real vulnerability in these storytellers. We don’t know [what’s coming]. We had had no idea who they were until we sat across from them and just them being so open about yeah, these trying times… this story of real sadness or longing or embarrassment. I don’t know, it really bonded us with them for that short period of time.

In terms of the other half of this, which is the recreations, you guys obviously bring in a lot of great guest talent. What’s your function there?

Helms: Basically, after each interview, we’d have a little brainstorm about “who do we know?” What friends of ours can we rope into this? What actor would be really fun in this part? And we had some great writers that really beefed up the reenactments, added a lot of jokes and visual comedy and all of that. It just was a really collaborative effort throughout the whole thing, and incredibly fun to make.

Park: Yeah, from beginning to end.

Who inspired a love of storytelling in you? Somebody who was a great storyteller when you were growing up or somebody in your career that you’ve encountered?

Helms: I’m trying to think. I have a buddy, Ross, who just has a story for every occasion and you can’t believe… Part of it, I think, is a talent for recall because once you start hearing a story, you’re like, oh yeah, I’ve got that. I got a story like that or whatever. But some people just have that gift. Of recalling stories and having the ability to inject them at the perfect moment of a conversation. And he is always just so easy to hang out with because he’s always got that.

What’s the key to a good story? Is it just that recall ability? Is it just being able to tell a story that’s surprising or is it somebody who’s acting out characters and really painting a full picture?

Park: Yeah. I think that’s a part of it. Really, really allowing you as the listener to visualize it. I feel like every great story feels a little cinematic. You know? And I feel like the ability to convey that scene to the listener is really key.

Helms: I also think the intention behind a story matters. A whole lot. If somebody’s trying to impress you or come off cool or whatever then the story just doesn’t really feel that fun. But if they’re really just being vulnerable and being honest and just sharing some embarrassing moment or something deeply moving, and they’re just trying to connect with you or be vulnerable with you… I think that’s really what this show has done beautifully. I think those kinds of stories are just inherently great.

Park: Yeah. I think the word sharing is key, you know? Just this real desire to share something of yourself with somebody… I think just to have that feeling of passing along this kind of sacred thing to another makes for a really good story.

Even if somebody is trying to look… Rick Steigerwald [who appears in the first episode] sounds like somebody at the end of a bar just sounding cool. But his story is so cool. So you can’t deny that.

Helms: It’s so genuine. It’s such an expression of who he is. Right? It’s such an honest expression of himself. I felt like he was hugging us in a way. Just welcoming us into his little dome of insanity. Yeah. God, he’s so funny.

And he’s this legendary boxer in West Pittsburgh and all this stuff. Lived an amazing life.

Helms: Well, here’s, what’s crazy. So Randall and I sit down and we do these interviews and we hear these stories. They’re heavily cut down just for time. Just to get an episode together. But Rick, my God, that story. There’s so much we had to cut out of that story. All the stuff that you’re talking about, his background, his childhood with his brothers, it was… he is quite a character.

Park: And the tangents. And the tangents were stories in and of themselves.

Helms: Sometimes, at a certain point, the producers are like, “He hasn’t gotten to the story yet.” We’re like, “Okay.” Because we’re having a blast.

‘True Story With Ed & Randall’ is available to stream on Peacock

Adam McKay Will Pivot From One Light Subject (Climate Change) To Another (Insurrection) For His Next Movie

After receiving mixed reviews for his latest film, Don’t Look Up, which satirized America’s lackadaisacal response to climate change through the satirical lens of pending asteroid strike, Adam McKay is tackling another controversial topic: The January 6 insurrection. This time around, McKay will be acting as a producer while The Comey Rule director Billy Ray takes the helm for J6, which Ray originally envisioned as a miniseries after traveling to Washington D.C. to interview witnesses and participants of the MAGA riot including members of the Capitol Police.

Via Deadline:

Ray had originally expected to long look at the events of January 6 in the form of another limited series. Deeply affected by the attack, he traveled to Washington, D.C. within days of the siege, and interviewed a number of the key principals when memories were raw and fresh. That included Capitol police officers Michael Fanone and Harry Dunn, as well as members of Congress who were trapped inside the Capitol when the violent siege unfolded. Fanone consulted on the screenplay throughout the process.

According to Deadline, McKay was given the script while in the middle of preparing Don’t Look Up‘s release on Netflix. But despite his busy schedule, he was so “moved by the material and Ray’s passion” that he immediately came aboard as a producer.

“Billy has written a screenplay that is not only harrowing and terrifying but is sure to become the definitive cinematic document on that gut wrenching day,” McKay said.

Daryl Morey Stresses The Sixers Will Try To Trade Ben Simmons Before The Deadline, But Admits It’s ‘Less Likely Than Likely’

It’s official: Ben Simmons is still on the Philadelphia 76ers. Ok, that’s been the case for several years now, but over the last few months, Simmons has made clear that he’d like to move on from the franchise that drafted him No. 1 overall out of LSU. The Sixers, meanwhile, have straddled a line where the team is both willing to move him if their reportedly high price is met while simultaneously hoping that he’ll return to the team and play at some point.

We got an update on where all of this stands on Thursday afternoon thanks to a cameo Daryl Morey made on Philadelphia sports talk radio. Among the most prominent updates was that Morey claimed the price has been lowered a bit due to the way Joel Embiid has performed this season.

One potential landing spot that has popped up more and more prominently in recent days is the Sacramento Kings, with Morey stressing that he believes that there’s a way to make a deal work there.

But ultimately, Morey said, while the team is going to work to facilitate a trade, he believes it’s more likely that Simmons is on the roster after next month’s trade deadline, and that if he had his way, he’ll return to the team.

The trade deadline is on Feb. 10. The Simmons-less Sixers sit 26-18 on the year, putting them in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and 2.5 games back of the 1-seed.

‘White Lotus’ Season 2 Will Reportedly Take Place In Italy

After its highly successful first season, White Lotus is set to return for a second season, this time set in Sicily. The first season of the comedy-drama, which aired last summer, took place at the fictional White Lotus hotel in Maui. The upcoming season will take place in Italy, filming at the Four Seasons San Domenica Palace in the Sicilian resort town Taormina. The hotel will be closed this spring to allow filming to complete.

For its second season, the newest batch of characters will include The Sopranos’ alum Michael Imperioli, Aubrey Plaza, F. Murray Abraham, Tom Hollander, Adam DiMarco, and Haley Lu Richardsonin. The iconic Jennifer Coolidge will return to the series as well.

Imperioli is set to play Dominic Di Grasso, who travels to the Sicilian White Lotus resort with his father Bert Di Grasso (Abraham) and son (DiMarco). Plaza will portray Harper Spiller, who is on vacation with her husband, Hollander will play Quientin, a man vacationing with his nephew, and Richardson will play a young woman names Portia on a trip with her boss.

The show, which was originally supposed to be a limited series, was met with universal acclaim. Series creator Mike White decided to make the show an anthology series, bringing in a new slew of quirky characters for the next season. No air date has been announced as of yet. What we do know is that HBO loves to bring its characters to Italy for their second seasons, as evident with The Sopranos. Perhaps viewers will get to see Coolidge eating a gabagool sandwich.
