I rarely Monday morning quarterback rappers’ album rollouts (read: constantly), but if there was anything I think Cordae could have done differently in promoting his new album From A Bird’s Eye View, it would be to make “Chronicles” the lead single. The track is just a winner, finding a soulful pocket where he and guests HER and Lil Durk can relay their relatable narratives of romance with a catchy chorus and magnetic chemistry. Fortunately, Cordae is still highlighting the nostalgic track, releasing the moonlit music video today after a short tease on social media.
The video is similarly cozy, revolving around a diner at night, where patrons and employees do their best to spark romantic connections. Cordae plays one of the line cooks, kicking game to a pretty waitress, while HER is there on a date with her own boo thang. Meanwhile, Lil Durk hangs out in the parking lot, hatting up his own romantic interest, and all three perform from atop the hood of a kitted-out convertible.
While it could be argued that “Chronicles” is among the strongest tracks on the album alongside “C Carter” (in fact, I do argue as much in my review of the album), the two singles, “Super” and “Sinister” with Lil Wayne, at least showcased Cordae’s deft lyricism and delivery, and his live performances for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts and The Tonight Show gave an intriguing preview of his upcoming From A Bird’s Eye View tour.

Hulu launches into the shortest month of the year armed with literally the most content.
There’s the biopic drama Pam & Tommy dropping early in the month. Sebastian Stan, Lily James, Seth Rogen, and Nick Offerman — they’re all in this wild ride that recounts the celebrity sex tape scandal of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. Then there’s a new season of Rick & Morty to look forward to with more multiverse shenanigans in tow. And a couple of blockbuster offerings also land on the streamer this month.
Here’s everything coming to (and leaving) Hulu this February.
Pam & Tommy (Hulu original series streaming 2/2)
This wild biopic recounting the infamous celebrity sex tape that unfortunately defined the careers of actress Pamela Anderson and Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee drops on Hulu this month. It stars a practically unrecognizable Lily James convincingly bringing Anderson to life while Sebastian Stan plays Lee. The limited series breaks down the pair’s combustible romance, the theft and release of their private home videos, and how the whole scandal affected their personal and professional lives.
Rick & Morty: Season 5 (animated series streaming 2/5)
The fifth season of this beloved Adult Swim animated comedy is finally coming to Hulu this February. Expect more hijinks and humor but with more episodic adventures and a huge new multiverse of threats.
Nightmare Alley (2021) (film streaming 2/1)
Guillermo del Toro’s latest haunting fantasy drama starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Rooney Mara comes to the streaming platform this month. If you didn’t catch it in theaters, the film follows Cooper’s Stan, a carny-turned-performance-psychic who gets involved with Blanchett’s psychologist who helps him scam rich people out of their money. Things, naturally, end up bloody and bad.
The Kings Man (2021) (film streaming 2/18)
Matthew Vaughn’s latest spy action-thriller serves as a prequel to his highly-successful Kingsmen series, following Ralph Fiennes’ Orlando, a Duke who starts the secret organization during World War II and the death of his wife. Orlando recruits other nobles and his inner circle to take down a man named Rasputin who is working to topple the Russian royal line and influence the direction of the war.

These days, it can be hard for even established pop stars to get a single in the Billboard Hot 100. Streaming has completely changed the game, and unless you’re Adele, Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift, breaking into the top ten is a big deal. That’s why the success of Nashville-based rising star Gayle’s “abcdedfu” is a pretty big deal for the young songwriter. Though she’s only 17 years old, her hit single has racked up accolades from the likes of Courtney Love, and recently broke into the top ten on the charts, rising from No. 11 to No. 9.
Sometimes when an artist has a single doing well on the charts, they hold off from releasing anything new and keep the focus on the initial hit, but not Gayle. Instead, she’s doubling down on the moment and letting listeners have a brand new single. Similarly acerbic, “Ur Just Horny” is a little bit reminiscent of her breakout single, which is a kiss off of epic proportions running down a laundry of things she doesn’t like about an ex. “Ur Just Horny” is about a guy posing as a real friend in order to just hook up again, and it will probably be similarly relatable to single women living in 2022!
“Ur Just Horny’ is about the time I crossed the line in a friendship that I thought was platonic for years,” Gayle said of the new song. “After crossing the line I noticed that they started treating me differently — they weren’t as nice and outgoing and honestly I couldn’t recognize them anymore. I started catching them in little lies and my mind couldn’t help but wonder what else they’ve lied to me about before. Writing ‘Ur Just Horny’ for me was coming to that realization that they didn’t want to be my friend they just wanted to get into my pants — and that hurt. It’s hard to separate platonic, romantic, and sexual feelings and sometimes in friendships the lines can get blurry.”

As he’s relentlessly done over the years, Jon Stewart is once again taking on Congress in an effort to ensure that American’s veterans, who were exposed to toxic burn pits overseas, are receiving the proper medical care and financial support they deserve. The comedian made the issue a central topic when he returned to TV with his new series, The Problem with Jon Stewart, but naturally, he wasn’t going to stop there.
On Wednesday, Stewart took part in a House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs hearing titled, “The True Cost of our Promise to Toxic-Exposed Veterans,” where he passionately argued that America has a moral obligation to take care of its service members who were exposed to burn pits during combat tours. As Stewart explained back October, the pits are exactly what they sound like. When it came time to clear out of an area, the military essentially burned everything from “old uniforms to hazardous materials, medical waste, batteries, to ammunition, armaments, entire trucks, nuclear waste, amputated body parts, and—the maraschino cherry–metric tons of human feces.”
In the latest hearing, he argued that Congress knew what was happening, but chose to do nothing, and there was a price for that inaction.
“Our country exposed our own veterans to poison for years and we knew about it and we didn’t act with urgency and appropriateness … They’ve died. Out of our inaction.”
“Our country exposed our own veterans to poison for years and we knew about it and we didn’t act with urgency and appropriateness. And therefore, we’ve lost men and women who’ve served this country. They’ve died out of our inaction. And so I just want to step back for a second and don’t worry so much about the protocol for a new disease, things like that. Let’s not lose the big picture because I know everybody here wants to do the right thing, and it’s really appreciated. I just don’t want to get lost in the sauce here.”
While Stewart was preparing to testify in front of Congress, the former The Daily Show host secured a top honor earlier in the day. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stewart will be presented with the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Award for Lifetime Achievement in Comedy. While announcing the award, the Kennedy Center cited Stewart’s advocacy that was on full display during today’s testimony in front of Congress.
“In these often divisive and challenging times, someone like Jon, through his undaunted advocacy for first responders and veterans, also demonstrates that we all can make a difference in this world through humor, humanity, and patriotism,” Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter said in a statement.
Too Hot to Handle: Season 3 (Netflix series) — If you want to watch a bunch of beautiful people who are also sexually frustrated, then this is the dating show for you. Netflix is officially describing them as “horned-up hellraisers,” and yes, that sounds perfectly accurate. They’re all banking on being able to abstain from both sexual contact and solo gratification while playing this game for prize money…. and maybe some love? And yes, this one was inspired by Seinfeld. Watch out for those Costanzas.
The World According to Jeff Goldblum: Season 2, Part 2 (Disney+ series) — Jazzy Jeff Goldblum (no really, he’s a best-selling jazz artist these days, although not a DJ) catapulted to fame while unbuttoning his shirt during the first Jurassic Park film. These days, however, Jeff’s pursuing more intellectually curious endeavors. And after exploring the origins of ice cream (you must watch that episode), denim, recreational vehicles and more, he’s about to leap into your heart for another round of episodes, this time while exploring magic, fireworks, monsters, dogs, and dance.
Heavenly Bites (Netflix series) — Settle in to watch this series about all the food that Mexicans love to eat but hate to digest. Bring on the ghost peppers, baby.
Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye (Disney+ special) — Clint Barton and Kate Bishop and Yelena Belova in one show: the final product was better than most MCU fans dreamed possible. Here’s a look behind the scenes to see how the magic (and those stunts) happened.
The Book of Boba Fett: Season 1 (Disney+ series) — The iconic bounty hunter returned, and this week’s episode will follow up Danny Trejo’s entrance into the Star Wars universe. Naturally, he’s the biggest space badass in the joint.
DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow (CW, 8:00pm) — A damned reality show crew from the 1990s is afoot, all after Gideon takes the time machine into Hell. Sounds accurate.
Batwoman (CW, 8:00pm) — Everyone’s looking for the OG Poison Ivy when Gotham is shook by Pamela Isley’s impending reappearance. Also, a powerful force is messing with Mary.
The Wonder Years (ABC, 8:30pm) — Bill’s pressuring Dean to work his tush off to become first-chair saxophone again, and yeah, it’s a bit much.
Jimmy Kimmel Live — Rachel Brosnahan, Eric Andre, Damon Albarn
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert — Christine Baranski, Nation Of Language
Late Night With Seth Meyers — Judi Dench, Huma Abedin, Teddy Swims, Daniel Fang
The Late Late Show With Stephen Colbert — Dakota Johnson, Josh Gad, Jackie Kashian
In case you missed this streaming pick from last week:
Cheer (Netflix series) — The Emmy-winning drama of the cheerleading world returns with Navarro Cheer looking to defend their champion status against rivals against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic. Essentially, two charismatic coaches (one from Trinity Valley) are pitted against each other, and their teams will do anything it takes to be real contenders.
Britney Spears is fed up with her younger sister answering interview questions about her, telling her as much in a long post on Instagram before ultimately deleting it. Screenshots are forever, though, so fans were able to preserve the pop star’s thoughts, in which she admitted that Jamie Lynn’s interviews and general attitude through her rough times really hurt her. She also deplored Jamie Lynn’s attitude and behavior toward their mother, saying, “She should have WHIPPED YOUR ASS.”
Britney Spears addresses Jamie Lynn’s interviews about her, recalls Jamie Lynn disrespecting their mom:
“Poor Mamma took it too just like l did in the end… She worshipped you too much I know but if you came out of my stomach I would have popped the sh*t out of your little ass” pic.twitter.com/oUiyJg08tJ
The two sisters have been going back and forth ever since Jamie Lynn appeared on Good Morning America to promote her upcoming memoir, Things I Should Have Said. Asked about her relationship with Britney, she said, “I’ve only ever loved and supported her and done what’s right by her, and she knows that, so I don’t know why we’re in this position right now.” Britney took issue with this characterization of their relationship, posting that she was “disgusted” by the interview and her family, writing, “My family loves to pull me down and hurt me always so I am disgusted with them !!!!”
Jamie Lynn rebutted in her own Instagram post, denying that her memoir addressed Britney much at all, while Britney followed up with more posts claiming ill-treatment by her family. “You say you love me … yet your loyalty is still with the people that hurt me the most!!” she wrote in one. In another, she wrote, “I wasn’t strong enough to do what should have been done … slapped you and Mamma right across your f–king faces !!!!!” Britney has since issued a cease-and-desist against her sister’s memoir in the hopes of curtailing future interviews, and deleted most of her Instagram posts addressing the feud.
While discussing the Democrat’s latest attempt to pass a voting rights bill, which would require possibly ending the filibuster, The View co-host Joy Behar unloaded on Senator Joe Manchin for his refusal to support the party’s efforts to pass the crucial voting reform. Never one to mince words, Behar openly questioned how Manchin and his partner in feet dragging, Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema, are still considered Democrats despite constantly bucking the party on key legislation.
“This is a guy who basically doesn’t want the poor people in his state to have a child tax credit, because he thinks they will use the money for drugs. And he doesn’t want paid sick leave, because it might encourage people to lie so they can go on hunting trips,” Behar said. “Why are the West Virginians — why would they put up with this man who doesn’t give a hoot about them, the environment, or the Democratic Party, or the country at this point? Answer me that question.”
However, Ana Navarro pushed back by noting that Manchin is immensely popular in West Virginia and continues to win re-election despite attempts to primary him. In her opinion, Sinema is the one who is “hoodwinking” voters.
“Kyrsten Sinema was a progressive liberal, who used to show up and protest against Democrat moderates!” Navarro said. “And so I think she pulled a bait and switch on the voters of Arizona.”
In a move that would probably make his father proud, Eric Trumpinvoked the 5th amendment over 500 times in the span of just six hours after being questioned by prosecutors investigating suspected corruption with the Trump organization.
The interview in question happened in October 2020 when Trump was summoned for a deposition in the case New York Attorney General Tish James is building against his father’s real estate company. James is leading a years-long civil investigation into the Trump organization’s business dealings to determine whether Donald Trump and other high-ranking members of his team committed fraud with Trump specifically inflating his property values and misleading investors about his personal wealth. James subpoenaed Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump in December of 2020, but it sounds like she wanted a crack at Eric first.
According to case filings (via Raw Story), Trump sat for six hours of questioning where he refused to answer anything beyond basic background information when it came to his father’s business. When Trump didn’t feel comfortable answering a question, possibly because he was afraid to incriminate himself or his family members, he would plead the 5th. He apparently invoked the 5th amendment over 500 times during the interview — which has to be some kind of record — but after James made her filings public, he was quick to take to Twitter to give his thoughts on the investigation.
Letitia you can not escape your own words. This is all window dressing for your abuse of office and ethical misconduct (which we are prosecuting you for) and northing more than a PR move to revive a political career after your gubernatorial disaster. @NewYorkStateAGhttps://t.co/7o5mlUp9PIpic.twitter.com/GXpIwThPDD
James, for her part, has been vocal about her determination to see the Trump family held accountable for their shady business dealings saying, “To be clear, neither Mr. Trump nor the Trump Organization get to dictate if and where they will answer for their actions. Our investigation will continue undeterred because no one is above the law, not even someone with the name Trump.”
Wilco is currently in the midst of its Sky Blue Sky festival down in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The event kicked off on Monday the 17th, and so far, the band has given two performances, both of which were notable for different reasons.
During the January 17 show, the band busted out a couple of rarities, playing the Wilco (The Album) track “You Never Know” for the first time since 2014 (according to setlist.fm) and their Billy Bragg collaboration “At My Window Sad And Lonely” for the first time since 2015.
Then, on January 18, their set was filled with a bunch of guest appearances. In the middle of their main set, Soccer Mommy came on stage and played “Pot Kettle Black” with the group. Later on, Kurt Vile popped up to assist on “Passenger Side.” The band closed out their main set with “California Stars,” for which they were joined by Chris Funk of The Decemberists. Then, Mavis Staples joined them for a couple of her own songs for the encore: “You Are Not Alone” and “Freedom Highway.”
The track calls back to the band’s roots. It beautifully melts together jangly guitar chords and wailing vocals to craft an anthemic tune that details a night one exceptionally wrong.
Shedding some light on what exactly inspired the song, Band Of Horses lead singer Ben Bridwell recounted a night that started in an indoor water park and ended with a broken-in home:
“I was with my family at an indoor water park hotel. On my last day there, I was walking down the hall and this guy was like, ‘Ben?’ It happened to be this dude that was producing the film that I was writing the score for. We met up in the family-friendly hotel bar which gets closed down by us at 10:00, at which point we then ended up in the parking lot. We get a little loose – nothing too crazy, but we ended up dodging security guards. Our story then goes on to when I’m back home and someone had broken into my house. With the cops that ended up being around, there were more people turning the lights on us, one way or another. At the parking lot of the hotel, it was the security guards turning them on to check on us out there and at home, it was the lights going on and off with these cops. I’m drawing metaphors here and there from these two stories. Also, things were going poorly for me at that time and that kind of peppers the entire track.”
Listen to “Lights” above.
