There’s not much that the internet agrees on, but Paul Rudd being named Sexiest Man Alive by People was greeted with near-universal enthusiasm. Paul Rudd might be the only person who can unite us all. The loudest voice of dissent came from the New York Post, which days before had proclaimed that Rudd’s Marvel co-star Chris Evans would receive the sexy title for 2021 and then wrote a hit piece against Rudd.
“Paul Rudd has been dubbed People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. I think I speak for many women out there when I say — huh?” the article begins. The author later writes, “Then again, perhaps, the choice is a sign of our troubling times. If you, like me, lie awake in bed at night, worrying about the ravages of COVID-19 and climate change (to name a few), then perhaps you’re also looking for solace instead of excitement…”
I’m not sure what that has to do with Paul Rudd, but sure.
The Ghostbusters Afterlife actor returned to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday, where he was asked about the New York Post‘s coverage. “Hey, that might be the first thing I ever read in the New York Post that I agree with. That is not fake news,” Rudd joked. You can watch the rest of his The Late Show interview above.
More than 10 months after the events of January 6th, the insurrection at the Capitol is still making headlines as those who participated in the riots are being tried and sentenced, and Donald Trump’s uncooperative allies are being forced to turn themselves in. (We’re looking at you, Steve Bannon.) At the same time, ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl is releasing Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show, a new book that’s largely centered around the events of that day, and which includes quotes given directly to Karl by some of the day’s biggest players—Trump included. And Trevor Noah, for one, thinks the former president sounds totally “gangster.”
The Daily Show host shared an audio clip of Karl speaking with Trump about the events of January 6th, in which he asks the former president—point blank—whether the rumors of him basically attempting to bully Mike Pence into manning up and standing with him were true. Here’s how that went:
Karl: There was a report, excuse my language.
Trump: Go ahead.
Karl: Not mine, it was in the report.
Trump: Yeah.
Karl: That you talked to [Pence] that morning and you said, ‘You can be a patriot or you can be a p**sy.’ Did you really say that or is that an incorrect…
Trump: I wouldn’t dispute it.
Karl: Really?
Trump: I wouldn’t dispute it.
Noah, for one, was totally tickled by the exchange. “Wow, Trump is gangster,” he remarked, then noted that “Even if he didn’t say that, [Trump’s] the type of guy who would pretend he said it, just because it sounded cool. ‘Yeah, that’s a good line, I totally said it. I said it: Patriot or p**sy. I love it.’”

As most of the world continues to work from “home,” travelers are looking for unique vacation rentals, reliable long-term accommodations, and accessible lodging solutions. With all of this in mind, travelers often turn to Airbnb when searching for their next stay. Now, as a part of its 2021 Winter Release, the vacation rentals and travel experiences platform is improving its site with more than 50 user-friendly upgrades and innovations.
Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky recently announced the multiple platform upgrades, which include new product features aimed to enhance the new way of traveling in a post-pandemic era.
“The whole world has changed, and the way we live has changed,” says Chesky in the 2021 Winter Release announcement video. “[People] can go anywhere and can work anywhere. There’s a sense of freedom that people have never had before…Technology made it possible to work from home, but what Airbnb does is allow you to work from any home.”
Whether you’re looking for your next weekend adventure, a long-term rental, or you want to become an Airbnb host yourself, check out a few of the most notable Airbnb platform updates below.
With the booming interest in vacation rentals comes an increased risk for property owners who list their homes on Airbnb. To offer reassurance to existing hosts (there are currently four million on the platform) and make it even easier for new hosts to join, Airbnb introduced AirCover. The new feature provides top-to-bottom protection for every Airbnb host with $1 million in damage protection and $1 million in liability coverage, as well as income loss protection, pet damage protection, and deep cleaning protection.
Perhaps most importantly, AirCover is always included and free for all new and existing hosts, and now allows an extended 14-day filing window and quicker reimbursements.
International travel is back in some countries. A big challenge, however, is navigating the diverse languages in other areas of the world. Airbnb’s new Translation Engine provides a seamless experience when booking your trip by automatically translating listing descriptions and reviews in 60 different languages. It defeats the need for a click-to-translate button, so you can efficiently research which properties are best for your specific travel needs more quickly.
The travel industry still has a long way to go when it comes to creating accessible environments for everyone to enjoy. To help further the progress, Airbnb has created a new way of reviewing the accuracy of features that make Airbnb homes more accessible for the disability community.
Hosts are asked to submit photos of their accessibility features, which are then manually reviewed by a specialized team of Airbnb agents. Leading up to the launch of the 2021 Winter Release, Airbnb agents reviewed and confirmed the accuracy of 100,000 accessibility features in 25,000 homes around the world.
Let’s face it, as much as we all want to get off the grid sometimes, most of us have an unhealthy attachment to our gadgets and the internet. Especially for those working from home, fast and reliable WiFi is essential to consider when booking a vacation rental.
According to Airbnb, guests on Airbnb’s website have used the WiFi filter more than 288 million times this year. With the new verified WiFi feature, hosts can test their listing’s internet connection right from the Airbnb app to have their WiFi speed verified. With this new upgrade, digital nomads can book a stay with the reassurance that they won’t miss a single Zoom meeting (that could have been an email).
Earlier this year, Airbnb introduced the I’m Flexible feature, which allowed vacation planners to peruse the site without searching for a specific destination, date, or accommodation style. It was made for those wanderlusters who plan as they go. Guests have used the I’m Flexible feature more than 500 million times, as more people are daydreaming daily about living on the road.
Airbnb is now introducing I’m (even more) Flexible, which expands the date range you can search up to 12 months out (versus six). The flexible upgrade also includes four new categories of unique stays: off-the-grid, ski-in/ski-out, luxe, and offbeat homes. I’m (even more) Flexible helps every kind of traveler across the world find an Airbnb they’ll love and remember.
Airbnb has redesigned the “Trips” tab on its website to combine all of the must-have travel info into one convenient place. The improved, more intuitive tab now features a countdown to your arrival, check-in details, current and upcoming reservations, and personalized experiences suggestions within your chosen destination. This upgrade is especially useful for those who struggle with staying organized and planning ahead. The new Trips tab can help travelers create a personalized itinerary, as well as check-in and out of their Airbnb with ease.
AirCover, Accessibility Review, Verified Wifi, and I’m (even more) Flexible are all available to everyone today. Translation Engine and Smarter Trips Tab will launch before the end of this year.
Does bustin’ still make the O.G. Ghostbusters gang feel good? Well, Ghostbusters: Afterlife (directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II helmer Ivan Reitman) waded through the pandemic and is somehow arriving on November 19, which is… wow, this Friday. “Sexiest Man Alive” Paul Rudd will tangle with demented Mini-Pufts, and Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard appears as Egon Spengler’s grandson, Trevor. And because the late Harold Ramis obviously could not join the production (in person, at least), there’s bound to be some emotions happening.
While speaking with ET Online, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Dan Aykroyd (who all make cameos in this movie) were on hand for premiere night in a big way, and that includes revealing a few tears along the way. Granted, this is not something that I expected to hear from Murray, given that he only signed onto the second movie to get a greenlight for the more dramatic The Razor’s Edge, and he never seemed too jazzed while discussing Ghostbusters II in the aftermath. Well, surprise, surprise, because Hudson and Murray admitted to the feels after jumpsuiting up:
Hudson then shared, “I saw Danny in his jumpsuit, Bill and I started crying. So apparently it was very important to me.”
Murray added, “I really never expected to still have another paranormal problem.”
The legendary Stripes star further added that he hadn’t watched the newest movie (at the time of the interview), but he noted that screenings saw people “walking out crying, so I don’t know if that’s good news or bad news.” Get your tissues ready.
In addition, the trio visited with Jimmy Fallon, where Aykroyd declared that “this is the right time” for the O.G. busters’ to don their suits again because “Jason Reitman wrote a great script, so full of heart, going right back to the first two movies and its DNA.” Murray couldn’t resist a little joke, though: “He was a pain in the ass.” Classic Bill.
You can watch more of Aykroyd, Hudson, and Murray hanging with Jimmy Fallon below.
Post Malone and The Weeknd have perhaps been the two most successful artists on the charts over the past few years, and they recently joined forces for a new single, “One Right Now.” Their collaboration is doing well, too, as it just debuted at No. 6 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song wasn’t originally released with a video to accompany it, but now they’ve gone ahead and given the song a proper visual.
The clip starts with The Weeknd, arm in a sling, entering Posty’s lair, guns blazing as he shoots a bunch of henchmen and throws a grenade to take care of that first wave. Meanwhile, Malone arms himself and also sends some bullets flying, into some Weeknd lookalikes. After more miscellaneous gunfire, the two meet up and face off, ending the video by each firing fatal shots into each other’s foreheads.
“One Right Now” is Malone’s first top-10 song in a couple years, as his previous one, the Ozzy Osbourne- and Travis Scott-featuring “Take What You Want,” dropped around this time in 2019. As for The Weeknd, his most recent top-10 was his Ye (fka Kanye West) and Lil Baby collab “Hurricane.”
Some of the most memorable plays in NFL history, good and bad, have come with the assistance of some unusual body parts. There’s David Tyree’s helmet catch, Antonio Freeman’s juggling Monday Night touchdown that bounced off legs and feet, and, of course, the Mark Sanchez butt fumble.
49ers corner K’Waun Williams almost added the latest chapter to the NFL’s legendary lineage on Monday night when he hauled in an interception by pinning the ball to his butt while laying on the ground after breaking up a pass to Cooper Kupp.
It is an insanely athletic play and immediately birthed the phrase “buttception” on social media, but, of course, he was flagged for pass interference prior to his incredible effort. The replay shows just how wild of a play it was as Williams reaches back and pulls it in, pinning it to his backside without letting it hit the ground.
Unfortunately a penalty on Williams robbed us of the butt interception counting, but rest assured, it counted in the minds of fans all over who immediately erupted on Twitter. As one would expect, the Buttception quickly moved up the top trends list as fans couldn’t believe Williams had just caught a pass with his backside that got taken away by what was a fairly questionable penalty.
That interception should have counted. I don’t want to hear any butt’s
Jen Psaki has been a marked improvement over former president Donald Trump’s press secretaries: professional, courteous, and for the most part helpful. She’s also human. And over the last 10 months, she’s done her best to turn her rapport with her greatest journalistic foe, Fox News’ Peter Doocy, into a kind of running joke. But on Monday, she didn’t appear to find him that funny.
The week kicked off with a day of final statements in the Kyle Rittenhouse murder trial, concerning the Illinois teenager who shot three protesters, two to death. The defense is claiming self-defense; the prosecution thinks that’s hogwash. Some have gone as far as to say he’s a white supremacist, and with good reason: He was caught seeming to flash a white power sign with fans after he killed two people.
Back in September of 2020, while he was still a presidential candidate, Biden tweeted a video about how then-president Trump “refused to disavow white supremacists” during the previous night’s debate. Among the people in the video were Rittenhouse. Rittenhouse’s mother then claimed Biden had “defamed” her son.
Jump a year and change and Doocy alluded to that in a press conference, as the trial was finally underway. “Why did President Biden suggest that Kyle Rittenhouse, on trial in Kenosha, is a white supremacist?” he asked.
Before she responded, Psaki took a few seconds to let loose a long, weary sigh. She said she couldn’t speak about the ongoing trial. “What I can reiterate for you is the president’s view that we shouldn’t have — broadly speaking — vigilantes patrolling our communities with assault weapons,” Psaki explained. “We shouldn’t have opportunist corrupting peaceful protests by rioting and burning down the communities they claim to represent, anywhere in the country.”
Things were becoming quite precarious for a couple who had gotten lost on their hike in Oahu, Hawaii. What started off as a simple wrong turn quickly warped into an emergency, as the hikers were stranded with no water, no food and their cellphones had died. To make matters worse, it was getting dark.
A moment of relief came when they met 12-year-old David King and his mother Christine. David had been three miles out of completing a 15-mile hike to earn his Boy Scouts Merit Badge (after a soccer game, no less), according to The Western Journal. Christine and David saw the pair struggling and offered to help.
The Kings could easily help the couple find their way back to the trailhead … except for one little issue. And by “little issue” I mean the couple’s not-so-little 100-pound dog, Smokey, who was injured and unable to walk due to cuts on his paws. Luckily, young David’s quick thinking had a solution for that as well.
“We built them a stretcher using a big tree branch that we broke in half and used our shirts and slid it on using the armholes to fit the sticks through,” David told KHON, explaining that he had learned the technique from his older brother, who happened to be an Eagle Scout. (I’m sure big brother was really proud when he heard this story.)
The group wasn’t quick to hop onboard with the idea, however, assuming that the injured pup wouldn’t take too kindly to being on a stretcher. They were soon proven wrong as Smokey was, in fact, “very happy to get on the stretcher,” according to Christine.
Not out of the woods just yet (literally), the group took turns carrying the doggy stretcher, rotating between two and four carriers, and even having Smokey walk small stretches. Eventually the travelers reached the trailhead, safe and sound. And yes, Smokey has gotten the cuts on his paws looked at and is doing well.
The once lost couple are now more aware about preparing themselves for trail hiking and the importance of packing food and water, keeping phones charged and being more familiar with the route. As David said, “make sure that whenever you’re doing an activity, think of what can go wrong and how you can prevent it.”
Listen to the Boy Scout, everyone. Planning ahead keeps a situation from becoming an emergency. And when a crisis is inevitable, be adaptable.
Sure, it was great to complete his hike and test out a nifty trail hack, but for David, the biggest accomplishment was giving back to others. He told news sources: “I think that when you help someone out it’s like there’s something, like joy in you, that’s just like, you know you did something good that day.”
Someone please give this clever, heroic and undoubtedly kind Boy Scout all the badges. Or at least, as one person commented on Facebook, “give him the BIGGEST Merit badge.”
Every Gen Xer remembers a small moment in time when swing music was extremely popular in the late ’90s. Swing went from nonexistent to an alt-rock radio mainstay from 1996 to 1998 and then, it was gone in a flash.
During that time, young people rushed to their nearest dance studios to learn the Lindy Hop and bought up old-school, retro suits and fedoras. Swing clubs started popping up all over the country and MTV played swing-inspired videos such as “Hell” by Squirrel Nut Zippers, “Jump Jive an’ Wail” by Brian Setzer Orchestra and “You and Me (and the Bottle Makes Three)” by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
Film editor Simone Smith asked Gen X to explain what the hell was going on in the late ’90s that led to swing music making a huge comeback.
Can a Gen X please explain why yu2019all got really into swing music for like 2 years in the 90u2019s?
It’s always hard to figure out how specific trends crop up, but according to Kenneth Partridge from Billboard, it began with the formation of Royal Crown Revue in 1989 by two members of the seminal L.A. punk band Youth Brigade. Royal Crown Revue’s old-school ’40s tough-guy aesthetic was something punks could relate to while also bringing back the danceable ’40s sound.
The band had a Wednesday night residency at L.A.’s The Derby before turning it over to Big bad Voodoo Daddy, who were featured in John Favreau’s 1996 surprise hit “Swingers.”
“Swingers” was probably the most important moment in the swing revival. The film centered around friends who roam L.A. like a modern-day Rat Pack to a soundtrack featuring Dean Martin, Count Basie and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
Definitely the movie “Swingers”. I bought the soundtrack and danced to it for months. The drunker I was, the better I seemed. pic.twitter.com/WFsSZiS3ZW
Others attribute swing’s rise in popularity to “A League of their Own,” (1992) “Swing Kids” (1993) and “The Mask” (1994).
In 1998, The Gap brought swing to the mainstream with its “Khakis Swing” commercial, featuring good-looking young people Lindy-hopping to the sounds of Louis Prima.
I remember this 90s GAP ad. The 90s had a little bit of everything. It was a good time. pic.twitter.com/JfDyG39qBu
It was a Gap ad that started it. I can’t explain it. It was like mass hysteria. We were sitting there minding our own business watching Reality Bites for the 47th time and suddenly a thing called The Squirrel Nut Zippers existed. And the guy from Stray Cats.
May have started in 1992 with this scene in A League of Their Own. Madonna was a pop icon at the time. Many of our parents listened to swing, so it was not unfamiliar to us. Full clip here: https://t.co/5nqFo5BB2tpic.twitter.com/CFFGEn5MMY
they played that movie “Swing kids” on TV a lot in the mid-90s and it was one of the only period movies about politics but also which featured bohemians rather than soldiers, it was completely formative for dudes my age, ask anyone they’ve seen it like 4 times pic.twitter.com/EZb5fTQFTX
I know people cite Swingers. But it also seemed to come on the heels of 3rd generation ska like Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Also, there was briefly a fetishization of all things Rat Pack.
On a psychological level, the swing craze seemed to be a pivot from the dreariness of grunge rock that began to fade from the public consciousness by around 1996. Some also think that the upbeat, fun music was a response to the return to the prosperity of Clinton-era America.
Once the Seattle grunge scene was over, we got into anything that wasn’t “mainstream” for 15 minutes. Swing, sure. Celtic, give it a listen. Latin, por que no? Mambo, dig it. Scat, sure, why not. The late 90’s were a directionless musical genre blender, and it was glorious
At the same time, rave culture, which was also centered around dancing and had an upbeat aesthetic, was becoming popular as well.
Some Gen Xers did their best to explain the phenomenon that felt like it came out of nowhere.
We were basically a generation that was raised by wolves. So, when we hit young adulthood, we looked WAY past the Boomers for models of correct adult behavior: swing dancing, cocktails, more formal clothes, etc. All processed through a punk rock lens.
It wasn’t just the music. You kids wouldn’t have your espresso martinis and craft cocktails without us picking this torch back up. pic.twitter.com/XPtZpGUA43
Two more things: 1. The 90s had a broader affection for 40s/late 30s fashion, kind of like the 80s had for the 50s, and 2. The boomers would never shut up about how the 60s were the one true youth culture, which made it extra appealing to embrace their parents’ music over theirs.
Smith may be confused that there was a big swing craze in the ’90s, but she should also know that it wasn’t the only strange musical comeback of the era. What in the world was the whole Gregorian chant craze about?
That’s not even the strangest musical revival craze of the 90’s.pic.twitter.com/URrQVU8f0B
Succession is back, after a long and understandable delay, and it’s like they haven’t missed a beat. The Roy family is still troubled, but in new and unexpected ways. Season 2 ended with Kendall (Jeremy Strong) effectively assassinating his dad, Logan (Brian Cox), to his proud bemusement. But over the five episodes that comprise Season 3 thus far, including the new one about a truly chaotic shareholders meeting, we’ve learned he wasn’t so much Machiavellian as making it up as he goes along. And while viewers are loving the new season, it’s clear Logan sees it all as a major letdown.
Cox spoke with IndieWire about the new season so far, and he opened up about Logan’s complicated emotions. He, of course, wears those feelings close to the vest, and when he speaks — even to seemingly praise Kendall, as he did during a trick pow-wow in episode four — it’s not clear how much of it is sincere. Cox calls Logan’s thoughts “paradoxical and conflicted,” and as an example he cites Kendall’s actions in the Season 2 finale mic drop.
“It does feel good. The boy is finally standing up for himself,” Cox says. But, he adds, “he’s also feeling, well, he’s only standing up for himself because two hours before I told him he had to be a killer. And what does he do? He goes out and kills me. You go, well, that’s funny. And then you go, it’s a bit obvious as well.”
But Logan’s “paradoxical and conflicted” feelings aren’t only reserved for Kendall. It’s for Roman (Kieran Culkin), Shiv (Sarah Snook), even the older Connor (Alan Ruck):
At same time, there’s the endless disappointment that he has, that he tries to counteract because he tries to maintain his love — and it’s not difficult for him because he does love his kids — the endless disappointment is painful to the character of Logan. The fact that the boys and the girls, they can’t see the game. It’s a game, but like all games, even when it’s a matter of life and death, it’s still a game. And they can’t see it.
Where Logan is more reserved, Cox argues, the Roy kids are too bound up in their “egos,” and that while he knows how to navigate through their antics, “deep, deep, down there is the sense he’s sick of this endless betrayal and the endless treachery that he’s living around.”
Cox also sees Logan as “deeply loyal,” citing not only his close relationships with his children but also longtime employees like Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron), Karl (David Rasche), and Frank (Peter Friedman), even though he’s “fired and rehired and fired and rehired” them over their many years together.
Then there’s that Episode 4 pow-wow, during which he briefly praises Kendall in front of Adrien Brody’s Josh Aaronson only to give Kendall the silent treatment when he walks away. “Well, he also says, you’ll say anything to get f*cked on a date, so that’s a giveaway,” Cox says, before elaborating on his methods:
But he’s in tune that way. Of course, he does see Kendall’s gifts more than Kendall sees. He does see Kendall’s potential even and he has this ambition for his son, but his son doesn’t get it. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make the thing drink and this is what he’s constantly doing. He’s constantly leading his children to the pool and then they will not consume. And that’s understandable because they’ve lost trust. They don’t know who this man is. The real bugbear is they really don’t know who their father is. They don’t understand their father. They think they do, but they don’t. And I think that’s kind of the mystery. And the story really is who Logan is.
Yes, but how good would Logan be on the basketball court? Perhaps better than you’d think.
Succession airs Sundays on HBO and HBO Max starting at 9pm.
