Woman uses common sense to masterfully debunk the logic behind the eight-hour workday

It’s hard to imagine what it was like working during the Industrial Revolution. People commonly labored 12 to 14 hour days, six days a week, in unhealthy conditions, and children weren’t spared from the misery.

In the late 1800s, there was a movement in the United States to shorten the average workday and a popular slogan suggested that the correct way to spend a day was “8 hours for work, 8 hours for rest, 8 hours for what you will.”

The fight for shorter workdays would be a long, bloody battle until finally, in 1940, Congress officially set the American workweek at 40 hours.

A lot has changed in the past 80 years and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed how and where people work. Over the past 18 months, many have gone from laboring in offices to working from home. And many who worked in the service industry are rethinking their professions altogether.

TikTokker AutisticCommProf posted a video about why she thinks the “8 hours for work, 8 hours for rest, 8 hours for what you will” slogan shouldn’t apply in 2021. The crux of her argument is that a big chunk of our “8 hours for what you will” time is actually spent on work-related activities.

Her video was in response to a viral tweet from Jarrel, a mental health advocate, who believes that the nine-to-five workday forces us to be in constant work mode.

Here’s AutisticCommProf’s response.

@ndcommlion

#greenscreen #capitalismsucks #capitalism #worklife #worklifebalance #fightfor15 #eattherich #generalstrikeoct15 #generalstrike

“As we can see, nine to five literally gives(s) you no time to collect yourself before have to go to bed and go back to work the next day,” she says in the video, reiterating Jarrel’s point.

AutisticCommProf makes a great point about lunch breaks, saying that eight hours on the clock is actually nine because “employers don’t want to pay you for lunch.” So many of us are really on a “nine to six or an eight to five” job schedule.

AutisticCommProf also takes time to factor in commute times, which are just under an hour a day for the average American. She also considers the time that it takes for someone to get ready in the morning, which is even more of a burden on women.

“So now we’re looking at 11 hours that are devoted to your workday,” she says. That means that the old adage should be updated for 2021 to read “11 hours for work, 8 hours for rest, 5 hours for what you will.”

The solution? She believes that commutes and getting ready should be factored into one’s work hours and that the average workday should be “three to four hours a day,” but says that’s an “entirely separate video.”

The turn-of-the-century labor movement fought hard to promote our common humanity by eventually giving us the eight-hour workday. But now it looks like we’ve arrived at a new era where technology, productivity and a renewed focus on work-life balance have many questioning whether eight hours a day, five days a week is really in our best interests.

Oklahoma City Thunder X-Factor: Aleksej Pokusevski

As the 2021-22 NBA regular season approaches and training camp winds down across the league, we’ll be taking a look at the player on each team that holds the key to unlocking their potential. For the Oklahoma City Thunder, the focus turns to Aleksej Pokusevski.

The Thunder are unquestionably led by a budding star in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, with the rest of the roster largely consisting of question marks. That distinction certainly applies to Pokusevski, who was drafted with the No. 17 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. The seven-foot forward was tabbed as one of the higher upside prospects in the 2020 class, with length and tools that cannot be taught. However, Pokusevski was one of the NBA’s worst players statistically as a rookie, leading to uncertainty for his sophomore campaign and beyond.

On one hand, Pokusevski scored at least 19 points on six separate occasions, flashing some of his considerable potential. On the other, he shot just 34.1 percent from the floor and 28.0 percent from three-point distance, posting an unsightly 41.2 percent effective field goal shooting mark. That kind of inefficiency is clearly untenable but, for the 19-year-old Pokusevski, there is still reason to believe in the upside.

For one, Pokusevski posted a 3.4 percent block rate and his length and defensive feel have been intriguing dating back to his pre-draft tape. He must add bulk in order to be effective, but Pokusevski does have the kind of reach and athleticism that could be devastating defensively if harnessed properly.

The other end of the floor is more of a mystery box, with Pokusevski able to handle the ball and deliver passes in a way that most players his height simply aren’t capable of doing. He struggled with ball security (18.8 percent turnover rate), though, and there isn’t a “go-to” move for Pokusevski on the offensive side of the floor right now. In addition, his jump shot simply hasn’t translated, and it is difficult to see him succeeding at the highest levels without more consistency from outside the painted area.

Oklahoma City added another highly intriguing, yet unproven, piece in drafting Josh Giddey with the No. 6 pick in 2021. Beyond that, the Thunder have a bevy of relatively interesting young players, ranging from Lu Dort and Darius Bazley to Theo Maledon, Ty Jerome, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Tre Mann. There is enough room to provide all of them with some level of playing time but, as the season wears on, Pokusevski must prove that he is worthy of further investment, potentially at the expense of fellow prospects in his age range.

In the grand scheme, the 2021-22 season projects to be yet another developmental campaign for the Thunder, with few wins and a lot of lopsided results. That isn’t necessarily the best working environment, but the situation is perhaps best-suited for Pokusevski’s development, as Oklahoma City can afford to provide him with a longer leash than one might expect, hoping his raw tools develop to the point of usefulness.

The First Reactions To ‘Eternals’ Are In, And Critics Are Blown Away By The Film’s ‘Epic Scope’

Marvel’s Eternals had its massive Los Angeles premiere on Monday night, and with it come the first social media reactions to the once-obscure comic book series that’s prime to blow the MCU wide open. Based on characters created by legendary artist Jack Kirby, the Eternals are a group of immortal cosmic beings tasked with protecting the Earth and giving humanity small nudges in its evolutions. (They’re also spectacularly beautiful, thanks to the cast featuring Gemma Chan, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and Kit Harrington, among others.) However, the fragile life on Earth is in constant danger from creatures as Deviants, and the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame has forced the reclusive heroes out of hiding as an even greater threat approaches.

Like all Marvel movies, the Eternals plot is being kept closely under wraps, but here are the first batch of spoiler-free reactions, and there seems to be a lot of love for director Chloe Zhao‘s work at bringing the epic story to life.

“#Eternals is the most beautiful & ambitious film Marvel has ever made,” writes Matt Ramos. “The cinematography & visuals were stunning. The cast was brilliant. I really want to see more of these heroes. It felt like at any moment any character could die. The ending was insane & had me screaming!”

“I fell in love with #Eternals tonight,” Nerdist‘s Hector Navarro tweeted. “It’s a beautiful translation of the original Jack Kirby comic concepts and it lets us sit with characters and their emotions maybe more than any other MCU film. It’s truly epic. It’s really gorgeous. Its trailers haven’t done it justice.”

Even comedian Patton Oswalt got in the act after attending the premiere. “This one was next level. Never saw brisk storytelling AND epic scope paired up like that. Did NOT go where I thought it would go. Chloé Zhao rules.”

You can see more reactions to Eternals below:

Marvel’s Eternals opens in theaters on November 5.

Elsewhere, Pink Sweats returned with “I Feel Good” and Tone Stith dropped off a sequel project of sorts to 2020’s FWM with his 7-track release, Still FWM.

Summer Walker — “Ex For A Reason” Feat. City Girls

We’re less than a month away from the release of Summer Walker’s sophomore album, Still Over It. To ramp up excitement for it, the singer calls on City Girls’ JT to join her on “Ex For A Reason.” The track is the lead single from the upcoming album and stands as a fun and upbeat record that’s also a change in direction from the lovelorn record her fans might have expected.

Pink Sweats — “I Feel Good”

Months after he delivered his debut album, Pink Planet to the world, Pink Sweats is back with acoustic-leaning records to boost our spirits. The Philly native’s latest release is “I Feel Good,” and it’s a truly warmhearted and cheery track that captures him sharing his gratitude for all his blessings and the current status of his life.

Tone Stith — Still FWM

To close 2020, Tone Stith dropped off his FWM EP, his first release in over three years. Thankfully, the singer had no intentions of making his fans wait that long for another project as he returned with Still FWM. With the new project, Stith adds seven songs and features from Chris Brown, Kenneth Paige, and Maeta to the FWM experience.

Reggie Becton — California

PG County’s Reggie Becton concluded 2020 with his Thank You For Listenin’ EP. Boosted by highlight tracks like “Listen,’” Becton’s project put him in a great position to impress in 2021. That brings us to the release of his latest full-length effort, California. Its twelve songs and features from Chris Patrick, Shah Infinite, Ryahn, and Ye Ali accentuate the growing talents that Becton possesses.

Derrick Milano — “Control” Feat. Ty Dolla Sign

Fresh off his signing to Epic Records, as well as a Grammy win earlier this year, singer-songwriter Derrick Milano is on the right track for his new solo career and the label. His second song since the signing finds him alongside Ty Dolla Sign on “Control.” The base-heavy track sees the two singers standing tall and proud as they’re able to fulfill the dominant role that their respective partners desire

Kirby — Sis. He Wasn’t The One

Kirby began her 2020 year with the release of Sis, a 7-track project that served as her introduction to the music world. Turns out that there’s more to the story she delivers on that project. Nearly two years later, she returns with Sis. He Wasn’t The One. It presents 10 songs and a lone feature from BJ The Chicago Kid, and it is surely a step upward in her artistry.

Muni Long — “No R&B” Feat. Ann Marie

Muni Long is a renowned songwriter of the 2010s. She’s worked with the likes of Rihanna, Chris Brown, Little Mix, Kesha, Selena Gomez, and more. However, it’s time for the spotlight to shift back to her solo career and that comes with the release of her latest single, “No R&B.” The track features Ann Marie and it’s set to appear on her upcoming EP Public Displays Of Affection, out next month.

Funbi — “My Intentions”

Nigeria’s own Funbi is looking to carve out his own lane in the growing afrobeats genre and his latest step in doing so comes through his new single, “My Intentions.” The infectious track is the lead single for his upcoming EP, Serenade. In a press release, Funbi spoke about his forthcoming music, saying, “I’m not trying to hide anything anymore, I’m taking the consequences as they come, just in a space where I am free.”

BeMyFiasco — Where I Left You

More than five years after her debut EP Layers, Dallas’ BeMyFiasco is finally back with a new project and it’s her debut album, When I Left You. Its 11 songs capture appearances from Carlitta Durand, Little Brother, and Darien Brockington. As the singer describes it, the project focuses on the turbulence of “love, loss, and self-discovery.” “It’s a healthy balance of confidence and vulnerability,” she adds. “Just when I thought I had it all figured out, this album showed me I was just scratching the surface.”

Rotimi — All Or Nothing (Deluxe)

After concluding August with his new project, All Or Nothing, singer Rotimi has added a bit more to the experience that made the album. He returns with its deluxe version which adds six new songs and features from Busta Rhymes, Ludacris, and Eliad.

Jamila Woods — “WYD (You Got Me)”

Both being tenured residents of Chicago’s music community, Jamila Woods and Peter CottonTale reunite for “WYD (You Got Me).” The track is the duo’s second record together following last year’s “Keys, Wallet, Phone, God” and it’s also one that will appear in the upcoming indie film Summertime.

Raiche — “Burn Your Clothes”

There are many ways to deal with heartbreak and in Raiche’s world, setting a fire or two is the best way for her. Her fiery new single, “Burn Your Clothes,” encapsulates her seething anger towards an ex-lover that crossed the line against one too many times. As a result, she decides that revenge is the best thing they deserve.

Taylor Belle — “Learn Me”

Los Angeles-based singer Taylor Belle is closer than ever to releasing her debut project, one she revealed is titled Out Of Body. Ahead of its arrival, Belle returns with “Learn Me,” a tender ballad that finds her deeply longing for a partner that completely understands her. The track comes after she released “Take It Easy” with Tank God last month.

Willow And Avril Lavigne Prove That Self-Care Can Still Be Punk In Their Raucous ‘Grow’ Video

With her recent album Lately I Feel Everything, Willow drew inspiration from the punk music she listened to growing up. In a full-circle moment, the singer was able to work with pop-punk star Travis Scott and even collaborated with the original “Punk Princess” Avril Lavigne. Now, Willow and Lavigne team up once again to prove that self-care can still be punk in their noisy “Grow” video.

Directed by Dana Trippe, the fast-paced “Grow” video follows Willow and Lavigne as they take New York City by storm. It opens with Willow going through a difficult breakup, but eventually realizing she can be the bigger person — so much show that she physically grows taller than the NYC skyline.

Ahead of the visual release, Willow spoke to Alt Press about her time working with Lavigne, praising the musician for her “effortless” songwriting:

“My goodness. She’s just amazing. She knows this genre like the back of her hand. It was just effortless watching her come up with her verse. Just the tone of her voice and how she knows exactly the right tone that’s going to work with the song. When I heard her verse, I was like, ‘Oh no, should I even get on this?’ Because I’m not going to sound nearly as hardcore or amazing as she sounds. But then I was like, ‘You know what? Don’t go back into that mindset. Be confident, hold your head up high and sing this damn song with this amazing woman.’ I’m so excited for it.”

The Weeknd And Swedish House Mafia Confirm Their Collaboration, ‘Moth To A Flame,’ Is Dropping This Week

A month ago, The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia teased that they have some sort of collaboration on the way. The Weeknd’s voice could be heard at the end of Swedish House Mafia’s performance at the VMAs, and after that, both artists shared the same teaser video. Now, we’re getting some more concrete info: The collab, presumably a new song, is called “Moth To A Flame” and it’s coming at some point this week, as both artists confirmed in a new teaser video shared today.

This follows The Weeknd’s recent announcement that he is postponing his upcoming tour dates to 2022, explaining, “Due to constraints of arenas and the demand for more shows I want to do something bigger and special for you which requires stadiums. Current tickets will be refunded automatically and all ticket holders will be given priority to buy tickets for the stadium shows when they go on sale. New dates forthcoming.”

Meanwhile, a couple weeks ago, he offered an update on his upcoming album, saying, “Some exciting features coming out in the fall before the album drops. We’ll slowly be unraveling that info in the next couple months. Some dawn updates: Album is complete. Only thing missing is a couple characters that are key to the narrative. Some people that are near and dear to me, some people that inspired my life as a child, and some that inspire me now. More to come in the following months.”

TikTok Launches New Discover List Feature To Help Spotlight The App’s Top Creators

While TikTok’s “for you” page might be filled with countless content creators making things the algorithm knows you love, the popular social media app is making it even easier for you to branch out and find users and types of content you never even knew existed. Earlier today, TikTok revealed its new “creator discover list,” a feature spotlighting the app’s various “icons, innovators, foodies, change-makers, and originators.” For those wondering just how the content creators who made the cut were rounded up, the list was reportedly compiled by examining metrics such as a creator’s “engagement, views, video creations, account growth, likes,” and “interactions with followers” as well as by evaluation which “creators and content have sparked conversations both on and off the app,” according to a TikTok spokesperson (via The Hollywood Reporter).

While using metrics in order to promote certain creators has always been a hot issue on the internet — namely over on YouTube, where the metrics used have been criticized for shifting frequently or being a bit, well, arbitrary — if we’re to trust TikTok’s process, the new feature also helps fix a glaring issue TikTok’s had for quite some time: giving credit where credit is due. While stars like Addison Rae, Tabitha Brown, Bella Poarch, and countless others have notably helped the app rise in popularity and created some of the internet’s most popular trends, many have questioned whether TikTok has been giving the stars their due credit for their work on the site. Thanks to their new “creator discover list,” it seems like the app is finally drawing attention to the biggest names drawing people over to the app.

As of the new feature’s debut, there are five potential categories highlighted creators can fall into: icons, innovators, originators, foodies, and change-makers. Over on their official site, TikTok broke down what each category means, explaining that icons are creators who are “well-known up and down the [for you page] and outside of TikTok” (such as the aforementioned Brown and Poarch), innovators are “pioneers in their fields” that are “constantly pushing boundaries,” and originators are creator’s who have “started viral dances, sounds, aesthetics, and more.” Lastly, the foodie category shows off chefs adding a “creative spin” to food-related content, while change-makers are advocates and educators who aren’t afraid to “speak up and speak out.”

While TikTok has yet to announce how frequently (or if) the list will be updated, there’s no denying it’s a big step for the platform and could help their creators find greater success. If you’re looking for new folks to follow, the complete creator discover list is below:

The Restless Jeff Tweedy Is Dropping A ‘Love Is The King’ Deluxe Album Plus A Neil Young Cover

Jeff Tweedy is tireless. After numerous recent releases, the Wilco leader will start wrapping up the band’s pre-pandemic re-scheduled tour dates at the end of October, and then be gearing up to release the deluxe edition of 2020’s fantastic expressionist folk solo album, Love Is The King. The album itself feels like nothing short of an extension of the Wilco catalog, but with more pared-down arrangements of equally splendorous material. Point blank, Tweedy is as prolific of a songwriter as they come and multiple vessels are needed to fill the magic that emanates from the Chicagoan’s brain.

Out in December, the deluxe album features the reissued original, plus a second disc of live versions of each song — titled Live Is The King — and a new cover of Neil Young’s “The Old Country Waltz,” performed by Tweedy and a full band of Chicago all-stars. Recorded in Chicago at Wilco’s studio, The Loft, and at local venues The Hideout and Constellation, the live versions feature Tweedy’s sons Sammy and Spencer, as well as Liam Kazar, James Elkington, and Sima Cunningham of Ohmme. The swell rendition of “The Old Country Waltz” is notable, because Tweedy is not only backed by the album’s players, but also because they will all (along with Ohmme’s Macie Stewart) be accompanying Tweedy for the winter tour supporting the release in late 2021 and early 2022.

Listen to “The Old Country Waltz” above, and below, find the Live Is The King art and tracklist, as well as Tweedy’s upcoming tour dates.

A Fox News Medical Expert Called Out People Using Colin Powell’s Death To Question COVID Vaccine Effectiveness (Including The Guy Interviewing Her)

When news broke on Monday that Colin Powell, the former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff who also served as secretary of state during the presidency of George W. Bush, had passed away, the main takeaway—if you just watched Fox News—was that Powell died from COVID-19, despite being vaccinated. And it didn’t take long for anti-vaxxers, fearmongers, and propagandizers to use his death to yet again question the efficacy of the approved COVID vaccines.

As usual, Fox News was one of the loudest voices singing out in this anti-vaxx chorus, with Will Cain choreographing a whole song and dance about how Powell’s “family has made a point on their post on Facebook this morning that Colin Powell was fully vaccinated,” but not once mentioning Powell’s age (84) or health status (a prostate cancer survivor with Parkinson’s disease who was undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer). John Roberts, meanwhile, immediately took to Twitter to question the efficacy of our vaccines—then deleted the tweet, then explained why he deleted the tweet but swore there was nothing anti-vaxx-y in his original tweet. This is the original tweet:

Twitter

What made the whole situation even more awkward, as The Wrap noted, is when Roberts and his America Reports co-host Sandra Smith welcomed Fox News medical expert Dr. Nicole Saphier to the show later in the day (just a few hours after Roberts had deleted his original tweet). While she did not address Roberts’ tweet directly, Dr. Saphier made it clear that using Powell’s death as a way to further any anti-vaxxing agenda was just plain ol’ ignorant.

“While you can see people all over social media trying to use this anecdotal report of Secretary Powell dying from a COVID breakthrough, why don’t we just stick with what we do know and we’ll leave it at that,” Dr. Saphier said. “So we have an 84-year-old man who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, had been previously treated for prostate cancer, and was also undergoing treatments for multiple myeloma,” she said.

Dr. Saphier went on to explain the obvious: That Powell’s age and health issues would give him both “a decreased ability to fight off infections, as well as a decreased ability to mount an immune response after a vaccine.”

After speaking for more than five minutes about COVID hospitalizations and how the vaccines work, Saphier dropped one final thought/shot before signing off, which—whether intentional or not—seemed squarely pointed in Roberts’ direction:

“It’s very upsetting to see that people [are] taking Colin Powell’s death a using it as ‘the vaccine didn’t work.’ This is a very specific situation, and to use someone’s death to try and make a point that really doesn’t carry a lot of weight to it is very frustrating.”

Amazing USO program has helped service members share over 125,000 stories with their kids while deployed

One of the biggest challenges deployed service members face is the feeling of being separated from their families, especially when they have children. It’s also very stressful for children to be away from parents who are deployed for long periods of time.

For the past four years, the USO has brought deployed service members and their families closer through a wonderful program that allows them to read together. The Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program gives deployed service members the ability to choose a book, read it on camera, then send both the recording and book to their child.

Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program

www.youtube.com

The program was created through a partnership between the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation and the USO. Hope was one of the most beloved comedians of his generation, and he traveled the world for over six decades, putting on USO shows to boost the morale of the nation’s service members.

In 2019, families shared more than 39,000 stories through the program.

The program has been an incredible way for U.S. Army Captain Justin Meredith to connect with his young son Jayden and express himself creatively. Just before he was set to be deployed to the Middle East, he checked into the local USO center where he was introduced to the program. At first, he felt a little awkward in front of the camera but soon took a real shine to making the videos.

When he arrived, he became a regular at USO Camp Buehring in Kuwait where he’d show up every day to read a new book to his son. He began to really liven things up by adopting funny voices, wearing costumes, and using props.

“The zanier that I am on the camera and the goofier the voices, the characters, the props, the more he just really engages with it,” Justin said. “My son is so engaged, and he’s so happy and he lights up seeing me.”

Justin’s nightly readings to Jayden had a profound effect on the family by keeping them close while he was away.

“It became a life-changing thing, a better way to stay connected, and it was great because while my wife [was] technically raising him [while I was deployed], I could use the books to help influence and mold and help him out with some of the initial things that he’s going through,” Justin said.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Ruben Pimentel is a father of three and uses the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program to connect with his family while he’s deployed. He loves that the recordings will live on long after he’s returned from his service overseas.

“I know I’m not there, but I’m able to connect with my family. Even when I’m 60 years old, I’ll be able to look back and see myself reading to my kids. It’s a family heirloom,” Pimentel said.

The program is especially popular during the holidays. In 2019, the USO held a special event where service members read “The Night Before Christmas” in front of a festive, fake fire in a costume of their choice.

Sgt. Nick Masi, a father of four, thought the program helped him feel close to his loved ones during the holidays.

“It felt as though the reading program had transported me to be with my family, even if just for one story,” he said.

The USO had to temporarily shut down in-person events in centers last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that didn’t stop service members from keeping the tradition of reading to their families alive. Service members who are USO volunteers at USO Erbil in Iraq outfitted the back of a pickup truck with a trifold to make a “room” for them to read to their families.

The USO team decorated their makeshift set, grabbed some books, and set up a chair.

Then, they hit the road, sharing their studio with service members on-base, stopping at popular places as well as remote areas. The USO’s goal was to reach as many service members as possible.

Deployment is hard on service members and their families, but they do it so we can all enjoy peace and freedom at home. So, it’s our job to keep them as happy and comfortable as possible during their times of sacrifice.
