Here’s Everything New On Netflix In September 2021, Including More ‘Lucifer,’ ‘Sex Education,’ And ‘He-Man’

Netflix wants us to ease into fall with the least amount of stress in our lives. That’s a formidable feat, given that humanity is pretty darn stressed out these days with the delta variant out there in the wild. Fortunately, there is a plethora of fresh new streaming content from the service, including the continuation of multiple beloved properties. This includes more shenanigans from the Devil in Lucifer, more roasting of social conventions in Sex Education, and more revisiting of an 1980s classic in another new He-Man series. In addition, if you’ve ever wanted to see Bear Grylls dress up like a Game of Thrones character (while also including jeans in his ensembles), you’re in luck.

Meanwhile, Netflix is also adding the Jaws movies to its vast library and some Saved By The Bell and Nutty Professor action, along with a fresh true-crime documentary and a comedy special with Rob Lowe. Here’s a heads-up, too: Cobra Kai is on the way soon for Season 4, but September is the last month that The Karate Kid movies will be available to stream on Netflix, so fans will want to get down with binging because some callbacks are coming with the return of Terry Silver.

Here’s everything coming to (and leaving) Netflix in September.

Lucifer: The Final Season (Netflix series streaming 9/10)

The Devil is back for one last dance-of-a-rodeo, and naturally, Lucifer Morningstar is still a total pain in the ass, and you’ll love him for it. Fortunately, he’s no longer attempting to be a detective, but here’s the complicating detail: Lucifer is now God, and he’s not sure that he wants to do the job. It’s so much more fun to be naughty, after all, and if Lucifer doesn’t get with the new program, he’s liable to trigger the apocalypse. This is one last hurrah for a Netflix-resurrected series, and Neil Gaiman’s creation will live on in fans’ hearts and, most likely, their pants as well. (Hey, dump the bad man, Chloe!)

Netflix

You vs. Wild: Out Cold (Netflix film special streaming 9/14)

Bear Grylls can’t stop punishing himself with interactive specials, in which viewers can choose the most entertaining paths for him after he sets out to survive harsh elements, this time in ice-ravaged mountains. There’s a narrative here, involving an amnesia-stricken Bear, who’s following up on the events of his plane crash…. what? He’s asking the audience to help him (and his pilot) get out of harm’s way, but who knows what will really happen? Well, you will know when you decide whether Bear will survive run-ins with wildlife and journeys through freezing tunnels. Do we think Bear Grylls will try to drink his pee and discover it is frozen while dressed like a Thrones character? I can’t wait to find out.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (Netflix series streaming 9/16)

Kevin Smith’s recent Masters of the Universe: Revelation sequel series sparked some overwrought backlash after continuing He-Man and Skeletor’s story in a way that some nerds didn’t enjoy, given that there was plenty of focus (like the original series) on other characters. Well, here’s a kid-appealing update of the classic ’80s cartoon, and this one has a much different feel with a He-Man-focused story, so maybe that will make the angry people happy? It’s got a whole lot of dude-on-bony-dude battling, looks like, while they fight for the ultimate control of Eternia and Castle Grayskull.

Sex Education: Season 3 (Netflix series streaming 9/17)

This Gillian Anderson-starring series returns, so that the X-Files and The Crown actress can continue embarrassing the heck out of her TV son, Otis (Asa Butterfield), who is apparently now having casual sex. Jemima Kirke is officially onboard, too, as a headteacher named Hope, who desperately wants to restore Moordale Secondary School to its former sterling reputation. Uh, good luck with that? The same goes for the announcement that Anderson’s character is pregnant. Oh, Mom.

Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan (Netflix film streaming 9/22)

The 1970s serial rapist who claimed multiple-personality disorder as a defense to his heinous crimes gets the spotlight here. The defendant in question claimed no memory of the sexual assaults, and psychiatrists weighed in with a determination that Milligan contained dozens of “multiples.” This led to a gripping trial that eventually pronounced Milligan innocent by reason of insanity, yet plenty of questions remain, including whether Milligan was simply a mastermind of a narcissistic sociopath, or whether his charisma and notoriety should have had any bearing on his fate.

Netflix

Attack of the Hollywood Clichés! (Netflix comedy special streaming 9/28)

The notoriously handsome Rob Lowe hosts this one-off special that deep-dives into the Hollywood clichés that directors simply can’t quit. From “Wilhelm Scream” to “Walking Away from an Explosion” to “Meet-Cute” to “Females Running in Stilettos,” expect everything to be montaged and skewered for your movie-loving pleasure. Will we get a “We’re Not So Different, You And I” segment as well? Fingers crossed, and expect plenty of A-Listers on hand to enjoy this ride through oft-traveled cinematic history.

A Prominent Anti-Vax Lawyer For Several January 6th Rioters (And Kyle Rittenhouse) Is Reportedly Now On A Ventilator

In what’s becoming a growing trend amongst conservatives who either downplayed the pandemic and/or refused to get the vaccine, attorney John Pierce, who once represented Wisconsin shooter Kyle Rittenhouse, is reportedly in the hospital and on a ventilator after being diagnosed with COVID-19. Pierce’s condition was revealed during a hearing on Wednesday for Capitol rioter Shane Jenkins. Pierce was notably absent and his office had sent a replacement without first notifying the court, which prompted his condition to be disclosed. Via Raw Story:

“Mr. Pierce is in the hospital, we believe, with COVID-19, on a ventilator, non-responsive,” the attorney from his office reportedly told a judge.

The judge ultimately continued the hearing until next week, saying, “Send our best wishes to Mr. Pierce and his family.”

Just a week ago, Pierce was tweeting his anti-vaccination views, which include telling the military to reject the COVID vaccine just like he allegedly did with an experimental during his time with the 82nd Airborne.

He was also railing against the vaccine back in July as the Delta variant began to rear its head in America.

Pierce’s diagnosis arrives shortly after the death of conservative radio host Phil Valentine, who also railed against COVID mitigation efforts and refused to get the vaccine. However, once hospitalized, Valentine quickly reversed his stance and began telling family members to get the vaccine.

As of this writing, there has been no such movement from Pierce’s family or representatives.

‘Halo Infinite’ Will Release On December 8 With A New Xbox Series X

After multiple delays and years of anticipation, it started to feel like we were never going to get to play the next game in the Halo franchise. However, the most recent delay appears to have gotten the game on track. Information has been slowly coming out over the last year, and during Gamescom Opening Night Live, we finally got the information many of us have been waiting on: Halo Infinite will release on December 8.

The game will be available in two different ways. There will be free-to-play multiplayer that anyone with an Xbox or PC can play, but anyone who wants to see what’s going to happen next with Master Chief and Cortana will need to pay full price to play the campaign. The announcement of the release date coincided with a trailer for Season 1 of the free-to-play multiplayer and a shiny Halo Infinite-themed Xbox Series X.

The multiplayer campaign was interesting because it makes it sound like they’re going to be trying to tell a story outside of Master Chief’s. Technically, all those multiplayer games everyone loves like Fortnite and Apex Legends do have stories to background why they’re all fighting each other, but they’re usually there as nothing more than a background. Perhaps 343 Industries is going to use this as an opportunity to expand the lore of he Halo universe.

Aaron Dessner Says Indie And Alternative Music Genres Are ‘A Myth Now’ Following His Taylor Swift Collab

Prior to 2020, Aaron Dessner was known mainly for his work as the guitarist in The National. But after producing two albums for Taylor Swift, the musician career saw a healthy boost of attention. He’s just about to release an album as part of Big Red Machine, his project with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, which features more Swift collaborations. While some might be surprised that Swift is leaning into indie music, Dessner thinks that the genre has now become “a myth.”

Dessner recently spoke with The Irish Times ahead of Big Red Machine’s How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? album, which is out his Friday. He detailed the LP’s writing process and his experience working with Swift. While many were shocked at the pop/indie rock crossover on Swift’s Folklore and Evermore albums, Dessner wasn’t fazed. To him, genres have been shifting for some time now:

“The boundaries between genres have been melting a long time. Indie music or alternative music is kind of a myth now. It used to be that way. But working with Taylor – we didn’t have any outside influence at all. There was never a moment when… I mean her record company didn’t even know [about the collaboration] until a few days before [release date]. There was no compromise in terms of what we were making.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Dessner described the differences between working with Matt Berninger on The National and Vernon on Big Red Machine. “Matt, he’s much more of a performer. He gets lost in the emotion of it,” Dessner said. “It’s fairly crazy, I guess, where he eventually goes to. Whereas Justin kind of sinks into the music. In a way, he’s taking lots of risks musically. They’re just very different. Justin takes a long time between Bon Iver records. He doesn’t make stuff to make it. He has to feel really inspired.”

How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? is out 8/27 via Jagjaguwar/37d03d. Pre-order it here.

Flight attendant who nearly died on 9/11 commemorates coworkers with a 200-mile bar-cart push

On August 21, Paul “Paulie” Veneto began a historic journey from Logan Airport in Boston to downtown Manhattan in New York City. As a retired flight attendant of 30 years, it’s a trip he’s taken too many times to count, but this time he’s doing it on foot.

In three weeks it will be the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. To commemorate the airline personnel that lost their lives on that tragic day, Veneto is pushing a bar cart 200 miles from the 9/11 memorial at Logan Airport to the Ground Zero monument in Manhattan. His journey is appropriately named “Paulie’s Push.”

Veneto is walking 10 to 20 miles a day and hopes to reach Ground Zero on September 11.

At the time of the attacks, Veneto worked for United Airlines and was routinely on Flight 175 from Boston to Los Angeles, the flight that was rerouted by terrorists into the World Trade Center.

Veneto had the day off on September 11, 2001 and has had to live through the guilt of being a survivor.

“That day sent me into a tailspin of opiate addiction that almost cost me my life,” he wrote on his website where he documents his journey. “After almost 15 years of numbing myself out from the thoughts of that day, I have finally been freed from addiction since 2015. I can now finally give tribute to my fallen crew members.”

Veneto hopes that his journey will bring attention to the sacrifice the crew members made on a day that will never be forgotten.

“I am doing this because I want these crew members’ families to know how courageous they were that day,” he wrote. “I want the public to understand that under those conditions that morning, what those crew members did, nobody could have trained for. They really need to be recognized as Heroes. They were the very first First Responders.”

On the top of the bar cart, he has the photos of his fellow attendants on Flight 175. He says he won’t have any problem finding inspiration during his long push. All he needs to do is take a look at their pictures.

“I look at their faces smiling back at me,” Veneto said.

September 11 is a day of pain for Veneto but also a reason to celebrate. On September 11 he will celebrate his sixth year of sobriety. “I turned my life around to be able to recognize these guys who were never recognized,” Veneto said. “We all can tell this country and the world that these crew members were heroes on 9/11.”

Paulie’s Push will benefit the families of his former colleagues as well as Forward 25, a nonprofit that assists people dealing with addiction.

Donations can be made at the Paulie’s Push website and checks can be sent to Paulie’s Push, in care of First Republic Bank, 160 Federal St., 8th floor, Boston, MA 02110. Attention: Cam Clifford.

Jaxxon D. Silva Delivers A Moody Performance Of ‘Out Here On The Otherside’ For ‘UPROXX Sessions’

22-year-old Los Angeles native Jaxxon D. Silva has been releasing music since 2017, bouncing from grungy alt-rock to low-fi, throwback hip-hop and collaborating with stars like Lil Peep and Skepta. Most recently, he dropped the five-song EP I Wasn’t Born With Enough Middle Fingers in April, continuing his streak of new releases and stretching his creative muscles to include references to grime and Chicago drill.

This week, he’s Uproxx’s latest edition to the Sessions performance canon, playing a moody rendition of his synthy 2020 trap anthem “Out Here On The Otherside.” The defiant lyrics exult in his status as an outsider and a rebel, inviting the listener to join him in going against the grain. “I’m out here on the otherside,” he croons on the hook. “Why don’t you try and cross the line?”

How The Nets And Hawks Are Helping Young People Find Career Opportunities In Esports

When we go to an NBA game we are there to see the players on the court, but what we’re really witnessing is the work of dozens of people putting on one of the most consistently high-quality entertainment products in the world. The amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to make sure an NBA event goes off without a hitch can’t be understated. It is the result of hard work from people across multiple sectors from marketing to management to the arena staff. Of course, when someone grows up wanting to work in the NBA they usually don’t typically dream of being on the side that isn’t in the spotlight. However, we adjust when it becomes apparent to most of us at some point in our life that we won’t be an NBA star. Sometimes our adjustments get us at least close to our childhood dreams.

It’s not that different in the world of eSports. When kids grow up wanting a career in video games, they’re thinking about doing so on the side of playing them for a living as a Twitch streamer or a pro in an eSports league. Of course, just like those of us who grew up wanting to play the NBA, life doesn’t always allow us to follow the paths we want. For many people, that ends their desire to work in video games or esports because they don’t see how else they could be involved, when in reality there are more opportunities than ever.

Two organizations doing this, the Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks, are approaching this from different angles but with the same goal. They want to help members of underserved communities find that there are career paths in esports. They can grow up wanting to play video games, and even if they aren’t the next star of the 2K League, they can still take those experiences and build a career. With the Hawks, it has been through events like Careers Beyond the Console. With the Nets, it’s a partnership between their 2K League team, Nets GC, and HBCU Gaming.

“I’m a firm believer that people aspire to what they see and so a lot of this for us is creating access to opportunity and so it is allowing HBCU students to learn about the vast career opportunities that exist within esports.” Jackie Wilson, Executive Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the Brooklyn Nets, told Dime. “Everybody knows what it’s like to be a player, but through this program, we are hoping to open the eyes of students and let them know that there are jobs beyond just actually playing. And so through that, and through these panel discussions that we’ll be having in conjunction with this program, it’s all about creating the access to opportunity to help create that diverse pipeline for esports. ”

While the Nets are going through the many HBCU’s across the country to help create these career opportunities, the Hawks are staying more local with their own efforts. At the Welcome All Park facility where they’ve refurbished a number of basketball courts around it, they built a gaming center to highlight the 2K League and Hawks Talon Gaming, and reach the community beyond those who want to hoop. The Hawks have also held events focused at local high schools called Careers Beyond The Console. These events are meant to show that working within esports is more than just being someone who plays games. It’s an opportunity to grow your entire career.

“There are so many different opportunities there.” Wesley Acuff, coach of the Hawks 2K League affiliate Hawks Talon, said to Dime. “You can manage social media, you can take pictures, do photography, content creation, video editing, you know, software programming, head coach, general management, strategy, film coordinator. Everything that you can do for traditional sports translates over into the gaming industry and the professional gaming industry.”

While eSports are the focus of these programs, they also provide the students they work with with the opportunity to build out their resume to follow any of the more traditional career routes beyond the gaming sector by building skills that are transferable to a number of fields.

“If you’re in accounting, you could be an accountant for any sports team.” Thomas Foley, Principal of Indigo Group, told Dime. “If you’re in marketing, there are probably greater marketing opportunities planning with all of the esports activities, and when you’re building a hundred million dollar esports arena, there is an entire growth model that’s going to be focused on a lot of that event component. When you’re streaming and all of the audio and visual components behind the scenes exist, that may not be tied to [only] esports…[it’s about] showing the opportunities in those areas and then connecting them to professionals in that space.”

By creating these opportunities and continuing to prove that eSports is an industry that should be taken seriously, it’s also helping end a stigma that plagues not only eSports, but video games as a whole: That these are real jobs that people work incredibly hard in.

“I would probably just say the biggest [stigma] is just people not taking it serious, like people thinking that you can just pick up a video game and just be good at it just because you play it.” Acuff said. “I think understanding the difference between a casual player and a pro and not treating the pros as if their careers aren’t serious careers. I think that’s it. You know, people just need to do a little bit more research and educate themselves a little bit more because it’s definitely a serious career. And it’s and it’s something that you have to put in a lot of work to be great at.

With opportunities like Careers Beyond the Console, and the Nets GC Partnership with HBCU Gaming, the Hawks and Nets are trying to doing everything they can to lay the foundation for opportunity. They’re taking the action where others might not.

“I think that opportunities come across from intentional actions.” Wilson says. “And so, if you don’t have leaders within the industry, creating programs such as this initiative with Nets GC and HBCU gaming, those opportunities don’t exist. And so you have to be intentional about creating the opportunities. You have to be intentional about the outreach and making sure that these opportunities exist. You have to be intentional about the follow through to make sure that these opportunities actually yield the results in which you’re looking for. There’s been a lack of intentional action within industry leaders who have the ability to make that change. And so I’m proud to work for an organization that allows us to be intentional about reaching the goals that we say.”

The Poster For ‘Spencer,’ Featuring Kristen Stewart As Princess Diana, Is Already Being Called The ‘Poster Of The Year’

Like The Batman, the trailer for Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana of Wales, played at CinemaCon, but hasn’t been released to the public yet. However, those in attendance who saw the footage say that the actress “will be getting an Oscar nomination for her performance” and that she’s “going all out for that Oscar glory” and… basically, there’s a lot of Oscar talk, which I would normally dismiss considering it’s based on five minutes of out-of-context footage. But Stewart proved with Personal Shopper and Clouds of Sils Maria that she’s more than capable of giving an award-worthy performance (working with director Pablo Larraín, who won Best International Feature Film for A Fantastic Woman, doesn’t hurt, either).

Entertainment Weekly has more on the trailer:

Underscored by a piano-based score overlaid with sounds of a children’s choir, the trailer features shots of the opulent life surrounding Diana, from the decadent food, to the gorgeous clothes, to the royal family seated at a long dinner table. There are various shots of Diana, who doesn’t utter but a few words in the trailer, looking miserable as she spins, dances, and runs from her troubles on the Sandringham estate.

Neon also released a poster for Spencer. It’s appropriately dramatic.

Can there be an Oscar for Best Poster? There should be.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the poster was Jennifer Lawrence tripping at the Oscars, but people on Twitter had other ideas. Get ready for Twilight memes.

Spencer opens on November 5.

Terry Crews Recreates His Classic ‘A Thousand Miles’ Scene From ‘White Chicks’ While Filming ‘AGT’

White Chicks came out 17 years ago, and while the main hook of the 2004 movie is Shawn and Marlon Wayans dressing as, to use their words, white chicks, that’s not the most element of the film nearly two decades later. Instead, it’s the classic scene in which Terry Crews’ character does some passionate singing along with Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles.”

Crews has regularly acknowledged and had fun with that scene over the years, and now he has done so yet again, this time on the set of America’s Got Talent. While filming a recent episode, in an on-set moment that didn’t make it to air, Crews delighted the receptive crowd by exuberantly dancing and lip-syncing as “A Thousand Miles” played.

As aforementioned, this isn’t the first time Crews has re-created his White Chicks moment. He performed the song on an episode of Comedy Central’s Lip Sync Battle in 2015, for example. He also re-created the scene on Today in 2014.

Meanwhile, Carlton has some tour dates coming up towards the end of 2021. She wrote of them recently, “Is there a chance we can actually see each other in person? May I play you some songs in real time? Can we have a real exchange of energy and spirit and tears and all those human connections that we’ve missed? I hope you can attend a show. I am always grateful to be able to perform and to connect with you all. There will be safety measures at these performances so that we can all stay alive and well:-) See you there baby! X.”

Big Boi, Like All Of Us, Was Captivated By The ‘Malice At The Palace’ Documentary

LOS ANGELES – Just like the Hawks or the Falcons, Big Boi is a staple of Atlanta. The Outkast member, aka Daddy Fat Sax, aka Sir Lucious Left Foot, aka Billy Ocean, is often spotted wearing local sports gear, in attendance at big games, and reps the city proudly. Without Atlanta there is no Big Boi, but without Big Boi, there really is no Atlanta, at least not the Atlanta we’ve come to know and love.

So it’s no surprise he continues to be around in big sports moments. That led him to Exposition Park on Tuesday, just outside the Coliseum, as he and Sleepy Brown performed the MLS All-Star Concert presented by Heineken following the Skills Challenge. Sporting an Atlanta United hat and an All-Star jersey, Big Boi took a masked and raucous crowd through a medley of hits from his Outkast days and his solo career.

Big Boi and Sleepy Brown took a couple minutes to run through Dime’s “Seven Questions Or Less” series, as they showed love for Michael Jordan, pondered their favorite NBA villains, and more.

1. What is your favorite basketball memory?

Sleepy Brown: Favorite basketball memory? Shiiiit. Jordan.

Big Boi: Dominique Wilkins. Spud Webb in the Dunk Contest. Malice At The Palace. I just watched that on Netflix, when they were knocking motherfuckers out. How about that?

2. Favorite player growing up and why?

Sleepy Brown: Michael Jordan.

Big Boi: Michael Jordan.

Sleepy Brown: Period.

3. Most memorable game y’all have been to?

Big Boi: When we performed at the All-Star Game.

Sleepy Brown: Yes. That was amazing. With Kobe, and everything.

Big Boi: “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” was out. So, ’04. We killed that bitch.

4. What do you think about the Hawks heading into this season?

Sleepy Brown: The Hawks showed their ass last season. Very proud of them. I’m so excited for next season.

Big Boi: I’m glad they paid that money to our boy to stay. We’re building. We’ve got some good rookies coming in, so we’re looking good. Yessir.

5. Who was your villain growing up?

Big Boi: Shit, goddamned Dennis Rodman.

Sleepy Brown: But I used to like Dennis Rodman too.

Big Boi: Yeah, I don’t know if he’s “bad.” Isaiah Thomas though … Yeah, yeah.

6. Most surreal moment that you’ve had, either meeting a player or around a player?

Sleepy Brown: That All-Star Game, we was in the tunnel, and next thing you know everybody came out, Kobe, AI, it was everybody. We were standing there like ….

Big Boi: What about smoking cigars in Japan with Michael Jordan in the skybox?

Sleepy Brown: Oh yeahhhhhhh.

Big Boi: That was the coolest shit ever.
