She got a nasty note on her car for parking in a disabled spot. Her response is a vital read.

This article first appeared on 11.26.19.

We’ve all seen it while cruising for spots in a busy parking lot: A person parks their whip in a disabled spot, then they walk out of their car and look totally fine. It’s enough to make you want to vomit out of anger, especially because you’ve been driving around for what feels like a million years trying to find a parking spot.

You’re obviously not going to confront them about it because that’s all sorts of uncomfortable, so you think of a better, way less ballsy approach: leaving a passive aggressive note on their car’s windshield.

Satisfied, you walk back to your car feeling proud of yourself for telling that liar off and even more satisfied as you walk the additional 100 steps to get to the store from your lame parking spot all the way at the back of the lot. But did you ever stop and wonder if you told off the wrong person?

What if that person on the receiving end of the note had a perfectly good explanation for why they’re driving car with a disabled sticker and tag?

That’s exactly what happened to Emma Doherty, who was surprised to see someone pen such vitriolic words to her in this letter she found on her car.

The language in the note is pretty harsh:

“You lazy conning b-tch. You did not have a disabled person with you! These spaces are reserved for people who need them!!!”

I get that avoiding conflict is something that’s been trained into us, but maybe if whoever wrote this note decided to say something to Emma, this entire thing could’ve been cleared up entirely.

Instead, she had to take to Facebook to pick apart the anonymous grouch and explain her situation to the rest of us. And hopefully whoever wrote the note (if they see her post) understands why they were terribly wrong.

Emma is the mother of a terminally ill child, Bobby. Her ruthless and powerful message sheds light on the misconceptions associated with disabilities and helps to break the stigma that all impairments are visible, because they’re not.

“To the person who put this on my car, which I had put my disabled badge fully on, I’m not angry at your pure ignorance, I’m actually upset with it. How dare you ever accuse anyone of not needing a disabled badge without knowing. I wish you had the balls to say this to my face and I would have told you (even tho I don’t need to explain myself to the likes of you) but I’d have happily said why I have a badge.

“I promise to get the stigma away from people with disabled badges who don’t “look disabled.” I hope this gets shared and back to you and you will see my son is terminally ill, he’s had over 15 operations, 3 open hearts, 2 stomach, lung and diaphragm and countless artery stenting operations and spent half his life on intensive care.”

In her post, she delineates the severity of Bobby’s illness, which has put the young man through multiple surgeries and procedures that are no walks in the park.

“He’s had 2 strokes and was paralyzed, brain damaged and has a spine and hip condition as well as a massive heart condition. The reason I didn’t get his wheelchair out was because I was running late because my son, who had a MRI scan, CTSCAN and a dye for heart function yesterday, only got discharged late and was back in this morning so carried him in.

“But for your information not everyone who holds a blue badge needs to have a wheelchair! I’ve told … security and broke down, I’ve sat through things nobody should see but why did your note break me? Because it’s your pure ignorance towards others. I’m a single mom trying my best to hold it together for my son who’s in and out if hospital. NOT ALL DISABILITIES ARE VISIBLE and I hope you regret doing this and learn your lesson!”

Throughout her post, Emma simultaneously castigates the person and drives one important point home: Just because someone isn’t in a wheelchair or crutches, doesn’t mean they aren’t disabled or in need of physical care or assistance.

I knew something would be said one day as every day I get looks and stares and see people whispering to each other about me and Bobby walking from the car. Everyone needs to stop and think before acting. I hardly ever let anything upset me but this did. How aggressive as well, and as for conning my son’s disabled pass… [It] is not a con, he’s actually seriously ill. I’ve added a picture of him to prove not everyone looks ill or disabled but can be seriously ill.

The mother clarifies at the end of the message that she’s sure it wouldn’t be a hospital staff member who wrote the message, because those who work in healthcare are well aware of the various reasons someone would have a disabled tag on their vehicle.

“I’d like to point out this has nothing to do with the hospital itself. They were lovely with me when I was upset and they treat us with every respect, always have [in our] 3 long years with them. They’ve saved my son’s life many times. It [was] just somebody who was parked [there].”

Her post quickly went viral, with many people echoing her sentiments and thanking her for helping to clear up that tons of people suffer from different disabilities and that not all of them are so readily apparent.

And as it turns out, Emma isn’t the only parent who’s dealt with judgmental individuals who gave them flack for having a disabled sticker on their car. As if having to deal with a sick child isn’t enough, they also have to suffer through getting guff from randos on the street over a measly parking spot.

Bobby’s condition has left him without pulmonary artery function, which means that blood will not pump throughout his body. As you can imagine, walking long distances — or performing many physical tasks otherwise healthy individuals take for granted — are out of the question for the 3-year-old.

As a result of her son’s condition, Emma has to take him to the hospital for treatments throughout the week, and seeing the note on her car while having to deal with that ultimately set her off. Thankfully, she used her anger to send a positive message.

Floored by the positive response to her message, Emma went back online to thank people for being so receptive and helping to spread awareness that disabilities come in many forms.

“My inbox is full of people who have told me they have been stared at or even spat at. This is a serious problem and I just want it to change. I am hoping by sharing what I went through people will start to think before acting.”

Neo-Nazis slowly realize this small town totally punked them

This article originally appeared on 11.25.17

In preparation for an upcoming neo-Nazi march in the small Bavarian town of Wunsiedel, local residents decided to fight back in a hilariously perfect way: by sponsoring each of the 250 fascist participants. According to Heeb Magazine, “For every metre they walked, €10 went to a programme called EXIT Deutschland, which helps people escape extremist groups.”

The anti-semitic walkers didn’t figure out the town’s scheme until they had already started their march, and by that time, it was too late to turn back. The end result? The neo-Nazis raised more than $12,000 to fund programs to put an end to neo-Nazis.

Here’s a military trick that can help you fall asleep in 2 minutes

This article originally appeared on 04.11.19

For those in the military, sleep can mean the difference between life and death. But shut-eye can be very hard to come by, especially during active conflict.

According to Sharon Ackman, the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School developed a scientific method to help its pilots fall asleep. Through this technique, 96% of the pilots were able to fall asleep in two minutes or less.

If pilots could fall asleep during war, you should be able to use it to knock out in the comfort of your bedroom.

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Relax in your seat

Given the space restraints of a typical plane, the pilots were taught to sleep in a seated position. They put their feet flat on the ground, while relaxing their hands in their laps.

Breathe slow, deep breaths while relaxing every muscle in your face and letting your forehead, cheeks, mouth, tongue, and jaw go limp.

Step 2: Relax your upper body

Let your shoulders drop as low as you can. Allow the muscles in your neck go lifeless.

Starting with your dominant side, let your bicep feel like it’s falling off your body. Then move to your forearm, hand, and fingers. If a muscle isn’t relaxing, tense it first, then let it go loose.

Slowly exhale your tension.

Step 3: Relax your lower body

Tell your right thigh muscle to sink, then move down your leg, saying the same thing to your calf, ankle, and foot. Your leg should feel like it has sunk into the ground. Then move on to your left leg.

Step 4: Clear your mind

The final step is to clear your mind for ten seconds. You can do this by paying attention to your breath as it moves through your nostrils or holding a static image in your mind.

Once your body is relaxed and your mind quiet, you should slip away into darkness.

Woman shares texts showing the difference between a healthy and a controlling relationship

This article originally appeared on 04.10.19

Saving old text messages from exes can sometimes be an asset when you need to remember exactly why you left them. Alternately, sometimes digital relics from old relationships are a good reminder of how much good we have in our lives currently.

At least, they did for the Twitter user May Larsen, who recently posted screenshots of two text threads with two very different men.

The conversation on the left shows how an old conversation went down with an emotionally manipulative ex. While the other screenshot is a prime example of what communication in a healthy partnership looks like.

The emotional dynamics of this exchange are full of red flags.

This ex (boyfriend, hookup, whatever he was) went from 0-100 in no time. In fact, the ONLY way this kind of freak out would be excusable would be if they had prior plans she ditched on. Alternately, if he was doing a performance art bit where he embodied Drake’s 0-100 via text message. Outside of those possibilities, this type of reaction is nothing short of manipulation and emotional abuse.

The second text message showed how Larsen’s current partner responds to a simple night out.

The difference between these responses to a simple night out on the town is night and day. When comparing the two messages, the red flags really pop.

People on Twitter had a LOT of thoughts about the texts.

Some women shared similar experiences with possessive partners.

A lot of people assumed the texts were from two guys she’s currently dating.

That quickly got shut down.

Meanwhile, others were caught up with the fact that her current dude wears a cowboy hat.

Regardless of whether the rest of us are pro cowboy hat (I’m pro if you can pull it off), it seems they’ve got a healthy situation going. Communication is key, in any kind of relationship.

Joe Buck Ripped Into James Holzhauer After He Targeted Him With A ‘Jeopardy!’ Joke

James Holzhauer has certainly been unafraid to comment on all things Jeopardy!, even as the show spirals through a series of controversies over picking Mike Richards to host the show. But one joke he made about another guest host, Joe Buck, earned a response from the sports broadcaster.

Buck closed out Season 37 of Jeopardy! with a hosting stint, and while the ratings for his showing aren’t in just yet, it’s safe to say that Holzhauer — a professional sports gambler who has assuredly heard a game of 500 that the veteran broadcaster has called — wasn’t exactly a fan of Buck in general. He tweeted two jokes about Buck on Twitter that essentially said he wanted Buck to stop broadcasting football games.

The tweets did pretty good in the likes department, but Buck got wind of them and certainly wasn’t a fan. Buck addressed the tweet on Sports Illustrated’s Media Podcast with Jimmy Traina with a pretty dismissive comment about one of the best Jeopardy! players in show history.

“I wouldn’t know James Holzhauer if he was sitting here in my room,” Buck said. “I don’t know much about him. I know about his success on the show, but I don’t know what kind of a guy he is. I have no idea. I couldn’t care less. I’m at the point now where I am so overreacting to Twitter.”

Buck kept going, which is weird for someone claiming that he “couldn’t care less” about the tweet from someone he doesn’t know at all.

“I don’t know who he roots for. I don’t know where he’s from,” Buck said. “I don’t know what his favorite team is. I have no idea. So that’s how I took it and kind of did a little eye roll and moved on to the next 3-year-old’s diaper I had to change. That kind of stuff is becoming less relevant in my life.”

“It’s one of those things I would never see if not for people in my life who can’t wait to go, ‘Oh, I don’t know if you saw this, but James Holzhauer is ripping you, so I don’t really have any context,’” Buck said. He continued, “I’m not going to bed crying, sucking my thumb because James Holzhauer doesn’t like me.”

It’s understandable to be upset about the comments, which certainly came without a real reason other than to roast Buck. And he’s had his fair share of criticism throughout his career, so that kind of thing can get tiring. But saying he had “no idea” who Holzhauer was is odd considering Buck is one of the few people who can say he’s hosted Jeopardy! during their stretch of guest hosts, a period that was meant to help the show find its next host during that tryout period.

Downplaying his knowledge of Jeopardy! is certainly, well, an interesting approach considering the job is now open again. But maybe he’s only interested in the gig that Holzhauer seems keen on watching him lose.

Sha’Carri Richardson Said ‘Talk All The Sh*t You Want’ After Coming In Last In Her Return To The Track

Perhaps the biggest story surrounding the United States track and field in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics was the decision to suspend top women’s sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson following a positive test for marijuana. Viewed as the Americans’ best chance at winning a medal in the 100m dash, Richardson couldn’t participate in that event and was not selected to join the 4×100 team, as per the usual protocols that the USATF follows while assembling its group of sprinters.

Richardson finally returned to the track on Saturday at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon, where she competed in the 100m against a field that included the three women — Elaine Thompson-Herah, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Shericka Jackson — who medaled in Tokyo. Unfortunately for Richardson, the race didn’t go as she had hoped, as she came in last place with a time of 11.14.

Despite the finish, Richardson spoke to NBC following the race and made clear that she was proud of her effort after how the last month went.

“Coming out today, it was a great return back to the sport,” Richardson said. “I wanted to be able to come and perform, having a month off dealing with all I was dealing with, I’m not upset with myself at all. This is one race, I’m not done, you know what I’m capable of. Count me out if you want to, talk all the sh*t you want, cause I’m here to stay. I’m not done, I’m the sixth-fastest woman in this game ever. Can’t nobody ever take that from me. Congratulations to the winners, congratulations to the people that won, but they’re not doing seeing me yet.”

The good news for Richardson is that despite the tough afternoon, she is right to have optimism — at only 21, Richardson’s personal best time in this event of 10.72 seconds is the sixth-fastest in history and would have came in second place on Saturday.

Young Thug’s Lavish Birthday Gifts Included A Hundred Acres Of Land To Build ‘Slime City’

Earlier this week, Young Thug celebrated his 30th birthday with a large cast of celebrity friends that included 21 Savage, Lil Baby, Metro Boomin and Travis Scott. Thanks to videos that the rapper shared on his Instagram Story, fans were able to get a glimpse of the celebration.

For the most part, Young Thug showed off the gifts he received from his friends, which included a wide array of diamonds in the form of countless jewelry pieces, but that wasn’t the most unique thing the rapper received. Instead, that distinction would go to a hundred acres of land that the rapper was given.

The rapper received the area of open land in Atlanta from his manager and 300 Entertainment A&R Geoff Ogunlesi and realtor Trey Williams. The latter took to Instagram with a video of himself, Thug, and Ogunlesi enjoying the new piece of land together. “Happy Birthday to one of my top clients @thuggerthugger1 [balloon emoji] His manager @geoffo212 and I secretly locked down [100 emoji] Acres of land for his birthday and now he’s about to build Slime City!” Williams wrote. “This is hands down one of the best ways to invest your money![money bag] Thank you @geoffo212 for trusting me to get this deal done‼

This ‘Madden NFL 22’ Glitch Gives Us The Greatest Moment In The History Of Run Blocking

The release of Madden NFL 22 means two things. First is the obvious: EA Sports released the latest edition of its wildly successful NFL video game, and for the next year or so, football fans are going to fire up their various consoles and play all of the stuff that comes with this edition of the game.

Second is far less obvious but way more fun: It is time for all of us to sit back and enjoy glitches that are inevitable whenever a new video game comes out. While a level of empathy for the folks that actually put the game together comes with this — making a video game is really hard! — the glitches themselves tend to be really funny. For proof of this, please enjoy this video of the greatest run blocking that has ever happened in the history of football.

Gonna say something a little controversial: If the New England Patriots can acquire Patrick Mahomes and Saquon Barkley and their offensive line can block like this during the 2021 NFL season, they are probably going to end up being pretty good. But since that is almost certainly not going to happen, at least we can take solace knowing that this video exists.

Ken Jennings Is Reportedly Viewed As The ‘Hands-Down Favorite’ To Take Over As ‘Jeopardy!’ Host

Now that Jeopardy!’s daily syndicated episode will no longer be hosted by Mike Richards following his stepping down from the post amid scandal regarding a host of past comments and allegations of improper behavior during his time at The Price Is Right, the show needs to figure out what direction it’s going to go in next. According to a report by Brian Stelter of CNN, all roads right now appear to be leading to arguably the most sensible Alex Trebek replacement.

Stelter wrote that conversations with “this year’s guest hosts, wannabe hosts, agents, TV executives and others close to the Mike Richards mess” have led to one overwhelming belief: Ken Jennings is in pole position to become the next host.

The sources have the same questions I have: Why did Sony botch this so badly? Did Richards rig the host search in his favor? Will he remain the show’s executive producer? And who will take over as host?

To address that final question first, most of the sources said Ken Jennings is now the hands-down favorite for the host job. “They have to give it to him now, don’t they?” one TV agent said.

Two other names that Stelter claims have been thrown out are fan favorite LeVar Burton (whose name “keeps coming up” in conversations, per the report) and, while citing the Los Angeles Times, Mayim Bialik, who is still in line to host primetime specials of the show. A report from last week indicated that there was a sentiment around the Jeopardy! crew that Jennings was Trebek’s hand-picked successor due to a gift that he received prior to his guest hosting stint, and while his comments in light of Richards’ ouster were more focused on the future, Jennings has been among the names that has made sense for this job from day one. Whether or not he ends up getting it, though, remains to be seen.

So Many MAGAs Are Poisoning Themselves With Livestock Deworming Meds To Try To Treat COVID That The FDA Felt Compelled To Remind Them That They’re Human

After a few months of declining cases, the pandemic has swung back in action, thanks to the Delta and Lambda variants, and thanks to the many who have refused to get vaccinated. (Or, arguably worse, use their popular Fox News show to spread misinformation.) One of the common claims against getting dosed is skepticism over the vaccines, which were granted emergency approval from the FDA but not yet full approval. But plenty of people are rolling the dice on other, decidedly less safe treatments. In Mississippi, for instance, a lot of people are taking drugs meant for livestock — and regretting the decision.

As per HuffPost, the state has seen a dramatic rise in calls to poison control centers after many have imbibed ivermectin, which tends to be used to kill parasites in farm animals. This has led a number of public officials to plead with people not to take something intended for cows, horses, and the like.

“Do not use ivermectin products made for animals,” the state’s health department wrote on Facebook on Friday. “Animal doses are not safe for humans.”

State health officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs called humans taking livestock drugs “really kind of crazy” and asked people to “please don’t do that” — especially when a safe and effective and free alternative is available. “You wouldn’t get your chemotherapy at a feed store. You wouldn’t treat your pneumonia with your animal’s medication,” he added. “It can be dangerous to get the wrong doses of medication, especially for something that’s meant for a horse or a cow. It’s really important, if people have medical needs, go through your physician or provider.”

Even the FDA got in on it, begging for some sense of sanity and self-preservation.

Of course, if you need someone to tell you, point blank, that “you are not a horse,” you may already be too far gone. Regardless, please get vaccinated.
