Watch a rescued beaver meticulously build an indoor ‘dam’ out of random household items

The fact that beavers build dams is one of nature’s coolest features. Gathering and stacking tree branches, rocks, grass and mud across a river so they can build their homes underwater is a unique instinct among the animals—and a strong one.

Apparently, it’s so strong that beavers will build dams anywhere, including inside a human’s house using whatever items they can find.

A video shared by Dr. Holley Muraco, director of research at the Mississippi Aquarium, shows a female beaver named Sawyer busily gathering stuffed animals, blankets, Christmas decorations, wrapping paper and more to build a dam in a hallway, and it’s seriously the most delightful thing ever.

Sawyer pauses once in a while to assess her work, which is adorable. And her ongoing struggle with SpongeBob SquarePants’ legs is a must-see.

If you’re concerned about seeing natural animal behavior like this in an unnatural habitat, don’t worry. Muraco explains that Sawyer spends most of her time outdoors with other beavers, but also likes to come in the house occasionally. More on Sawyer’s life story below, but first, behold her adorableness at work:

Sawyer is one of three orphaned beavers Muraco is rehabbing at her home with the help of Woodside Wildlife Rescue.

“Sawyer is one of a kind,” Muraco tells Upworthy. “Very opinionated and, as crazy as it sounds, intelligent. I raised Sawyer on a bottle in our home and then introduced her to Huck and Finn who are a bit older. All three were orphaned separately when their parents were killed. The three were sent to Woodside Wildlife to be raised as siblings.”

Sawyer, Huck and Finn. Perfection.

Muraco says Sawyer started building dams in her kennel as a tiny baby and then moved on to building bigger dams in the hallway. She lives outside with Huck and Finn, but she walks to Muraco’s back door when she wants to go inside to check on things and build a new dam.

Muraco says beavers are very social creatures and do better living in a group, but are also one of the most difficult animals to rehab. They have to spend up to two years with rehabbers, which is how long they would spend with their parents in the wild, and caring for them is challenging due to their complex and sensitive digestive needs. They are also prone to illness and there’s a lot that’s still unknown about vet care for them. Muraco says beavers are also considered a nuisance animal, especially in Mississippi, so it can be hard to find a safe place to release them.

In Muraco’s care, Sawyer, Huck and Finn get ample opportunities to practice instinctive behaviors, which is a vital element of rehabilitation. The ultimate goal is for them to return to the wild once they meet key milestones.

Raising beavers is a lot of work, but Muraco is dedicated to preparing these young ‘uns for life after rehab, both for their own good and for the environment. “Beavers are a keystone species and are often critical for healthy wetlands,” she explains. They are misunderstood creatures and are sometimes killed by people who simply see them as pests, which is one reason Muraco publicly shares her adventures with Sawyer, Huck and Finn.

“We are so excited that people are enjoying watching the beavers and falling in love with this unusual, quirky rodent,” she says.

If anyone wants to support these beaver rescue efforts, Muraco invites people to donate to Woodside Wildlife Rescue.

STAYC Girls Continue To Hold It Down With ‘Metamorphic’

STAYC(1024x450)
High Up Entertainment

Over the past decade and some, South Korean producer duo Black Eyed Pilseung — composed of Rado and Choi Kyusung — have produced countless of hits for K-pop artists. With songs like SISTAR’s “Touch My Body” and TWICE’s “Like Ooh-Ahh,” “Cheer Up,” “TT,” “Likey,” and “Fancy,” it was only a matter of time these K-pop producing powerhouses would establish their own label, High Up Entertainment, and debut their own girl group.

In 2020, STAYC (an acronym for “Star To A Young Culture”) debuted as a six-member girl group under High Up with a “teen fresh” concept that would take bubble gum pop to another level; exploring sounds to complement the variety of vocal colors within the group. Their single “So Bad,” from their self-titled single album, is an electrifying pop track that combines drum and bass with synth waves. The six-member girl group — composed of Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon, and J — then went on to become hit viral sensations with their second single “ASAP” that had South Korea and the K-pop community dancing along. Their popularity only continued to consistently go up, as a slew of single-albums and EPs continued to flow into their discography; awarding them with the Digital Song Award for “ASAP” and Best Rookie Award at the Golden Disc Awards in 2022. In 2023, their music video “Bubble” won Best Music Video at the Melon Music Awards.

As the group soon approaches their fourth anniversary this November, the group released their first studio album, Metamorphic, earlier this month (July 1) with their lead single “Cheeky Icy Thang” and supporting track “1 Thing”. Just like the title, the album celebrates STAYC’s colorful sounds and voices while continuing to stay true to their electro-bubblegum pop roots. The 14-track project explores solo (“Roses” by Isa), unit (“Find” by Sieun, Seeun and J; “Fakin’” by Sumin and Yoon) , and group tracks.

Ahead of KCON 2024 in Los Angeles, California, Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon, and J briefly chat it up to discuss this chapter in their careers and what’s to come.

So, how does it feel to finally release a first album?

Sumin: So, in general, since this is our first album where we were able to try different styles, we’re really happy. There were some songs that fans have been waiting for – that we’ve been preparing – and now we were finally able to include that in Metamorphic. We also participated in writing the lyrics for some of the songs, so it was very meaningful in that sense.

How long did it take to produce this album?

Sumin: Maybe 2 years? ‘Cause there were songs that we had been working on for a long time like maybe not the entire thing but there were some things that we’ve been preparing for a long time.

The baseline in “Cheeky Icy Thang” is somewhat similar to “RUN2U,” so many were curious if this would be an extension. What were your impressions when you first heard the lead single?

Sieun: Actually, when I first heard “Cheeky Icy Thang,” it was so unique and really different from the usual guide that we listen to. So I was like, “Can we do this?” But all of sudden, I found myself listening to the guide vocal and then just dancing to myself in the car realizing the beat was really unique and rhythmic.

There has to be some behind the scenes because two years of gathering and prepping songs, on the side, is quite a long time.

Isa: So in “Cheeky Icy Thang”, some of the choreography got changed; originally verse 1 and verse 2 were me and Sieun; and since we were working with new producers, we were able to find different styles of vocals in each member and skills as well.

Were there new discoveries you found in your artistry?

J: I didn’t realize how wide my vocal range was but there were so many different types of songs in this album that we got different types of parts in each song so I was able to try different voices and I was able to discover all those voices in me.

Yoon: In general, as STAYC, as a group we feel like we’re no longer really limited by the genre of the music and since we’re trying different types of genres we’re able to embrace and be able to really embody all of those different things and now in general we feel like we’ve become fuller. And we have more confidence and pride in ourselves as well. And now that we have more confidence we also feel that responsibility to do even better.

Currently, girl groups are the powerhouse of K-pop right now and you guys are part of it. How does it feel to be a leading act in this generation?

Sumin: I feel all the girl groups all embody different genres; some are energetic, some are more lovely, some have more different concepts and STAYC also has its own genre and concepts as well. It’s very important that we’re all very unique to ourselves. And as another girl group in this generation, I’m really happy that I’m able to really portray different types of music to the world as a girl group.

Who were your female solo inspirations as you were either debuting or creating this album?

Sieun: I think it’s not just for this album, but I really get a lot of inspiration from Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift and also IU’s one of my role model artists. And also BLACKPINK. I really love BLACKPINK ‘cause they’re really unique.

What do you want the world to know about STAYC that they haven’t learned yet?

Sieun: I wish the audience would know that we’re going to keep challenging ourselves to create our own genre of STAYC. Our music genre is STAYC. We’re gonna keep trying harder to show you better performances and better music. So I want them to just keep looking forward to us.

To play on the supporting track “1 Thing”, if there’s one thing each of you want at this moment for your careers, what would it be?

Isa: I want to be the top in this scene.

Sumin: I want to perform in a stadium.

Sieun: I wish our song was on the Billboard chart someday.

J: Dome tour

Jenna Ortega Has Been Reflecting On Those Controversial Comments She Made About The ‘Wednesday’ Scripts

After the success of Wednesday, Jenna Ortega seemed a little uncomfortable with her newfound fame, and probably didn’t realize that a few casual comments could spark outrage, but everyone has to learn somehow, and unfortunately most of the time it’s because of a podcast.

On a March 2023 episode of the “Armchair Expert” podcast, Ortega said that she had to “put her foot down” and ask for changes to her Wednesday character because they made “no sense.” She even admitted that she “became almost unprofessional” when it came to changing her dialogue. This caused quite a stir on social media, especially from writers and producers who called the comments “toxic.” Now, Ortega sees the situation differently.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Ortega said that she didn’t do a good job explaining the situation. “I probably could have used my words better in describing all of that. I think, oftentimes, I’m such a rambler. I think it was hard because I felt like had I represented the situation better, it probably would’ve been received better.”

Ortega then revealed that it was a valuable lesson. “Everything that I said felt so magnified… It felt almost dystopian to me,” Ortega said. She explained how she’s grown from the situation,”You’re never going to please everybody, and as someone who naturally was a people pleaser, that was really hard for me to understand. Some people just may not like you…and that’s entirely fine.”

Ortega has been vocal about her goals for a darker second season and that seems to be the direction they are going, so hopefully she won’t have to suggest too many edits again.

Relive Taylor Swift’s Many ‘Eras’ At A Career-Spanning Exhibit Coming To The Grammy Museum Mississippi

Taylor Swift has won 14 Grammys, including Album of the Year four times, the only artist to ever do so. To celebrate her years of record-breaking accomplishments (and to maybe get a “Welcome To New York”-style song written about the Magnolia State), the Grammy Museum Mississippi is hosting a special new exhibit called “Taylor Swift: Through The Eras.”

The exhibit, which runs from Friday, August 23, until February 2, 2025, includes artifacts from throughout Swift’s career, including the “Sparkle Guitar” she played during the Fearless Tour; the outfit she wore while performing “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” at the 2013 Grammys; and the cozy-looking Stella McCartney coat from the Evermore album cover. There will also be nods to Reputation, Speak Now, and The Tortured Poets Department, among other albums, as well as the “City Of Lover” concert.

“We couldn’t be more excited to debut ‘Taylor Swift: Through The Eras’ at our Mississippi Museum this year,” said Grammy Museum Mississippi executive director Emily Havens. “Throughout her 18-year career, Swift has won an impressive 14 Grammy Awards, and the only artist to win four Album of the Year Grammys, released critically acclaimed albums and is currently on her record-breaking Eras Tour. We can’t wait to share this story with our visitors.”

To find out more information and to purchase tickets, head to the Grammy Museum Mississippi’s website.

Charles Barkley Will Stay With TNT Sports On His Current 10-Year Contract Despite Them Losing The NBA

chuck top
TNT

TNT Sports will no longer carry the NBA after next year, as the league has a new 11-year, $77 billion media rights deal with ESPN, NBC, and Amazon, which means the apparent end of Inside the NBA after the 2024-25 season.

Many have speculated on the futures of the Inside crew, with reports that Amazon and ESPN have explored bringing over some (or all) of the crew after 2025, but it was all dependent on what the fellas wanted to do. It’s been reported that Ernie Johnson won’t leave Turner, and Charles Barkley stated at the end of the season he’d retire after next year — although not many believed him — and that he wouldn’t feel right going to a new network no matter the money.

While folks were right not to buy the retirement bit, Barkley was telling the truth when it came to his loyalty to TNT. On Tuesday, the network announced they had reached an agreement with Barkley to stay with the network for the remainder of his 10-year, $210 million deal he signed in 2022, despite them no longer having NBA rights.

“I love my TNT Sports family. My #1 priority has been and always will be our people and keeping everyone together for as long as possible,” said Barkley. “We have the most amazing people, and they are the best at what they do. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with them both on the shows we currently have and new ones we develop together in the future. This is the only place for me. I have to say … I’ve been impressed by the leadership team who is fighting hard and have been aggressive in adding new properties to TNT Sports, which I am very excited about. I appreciate them and all of my colleagues for their continued support, and most importantly our fans. I’m going to give my all as we keep them entertained for years to come.”

“Charles is one of the best and most beloved sportscasters in the history of television,” said TNT Sports CEO Luis Silberwasser. “I know I speak for all the members of the TNT Sports family when I say we are incredibly thrilled to share this mutual commitment to continue showcasing Charles’ one-of-a-kind talents and entertain fans well into the future. We continue to add to the breadth and depth of our sports portfolio — including new properties in the College Football Playoffs, Roland-Garros, NASCAR, BIG EAST college basketball, Mountain West football, among others – and it’s fantastic to have Charles for this journey as we develop new content ideas and shows for our fans.”

The announcement comes as a fairly big surprise, not that Barkley isn’t in fact hanging up the microphone, but that he’ll be staying with TNT without them having the NBA. Barkley loves hockey, so I’d guess he’ll be a semi-regular guest on their NHL coverage, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they looked to start some kind of Chuck Bets show around his love of gambling.

This also opens the door for Inside the NBA to continue in one of two forms. One would be as a standalone, weekly NBA show for TNT. I’m not sure how that’d do from a viewership perspective on linear without being alongside a game broadcast, but they could certainly still churn out the kind of viral content that fans love even without being attached to game coverage — and open it up to become even more of a late night show type feel if they wanted. The other option would be to license out the show to Amazon, with TNT Sports owning and producing it.

This is an idea that’s been kicked around for some time, and it would make a ton of sense for all parties. Amazon is still new enough to the sports media space that they’d have to build out a physical studio anyway to create a show from scratch, and licensing Inside would give them immediate authority with fans by porting over the best studio show in sports en masse. If TNT produces the show in Atlanta, you’d have the same people running it behind the scenes, which is almost as important to the show’s feel as the folks in front of the camera, and gives TNT a way to keep Barkley and the rest around for other shows while mitigating the cost with whatever Amazon would be paying them.

How Many Episodes Are In ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 4?

umbrella-academy-season-4-a
Via Netflix

The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy will arrive this week, and the even better news (for eager bingewatchers) is that the whole shebang will stream at once. As a result, the Hargreeves siblings will deal with their endless inner turmoil while pulling off one last job (stopping the last apocalypse of the franchise), but there’s a non-formulaic twist here because they must do so without their powers.

When the show resumes, Victor, Klaus, Number Five, and the rest will still be in “normal” mode after Allison hit the reset button. The series will also go off-book after exhausting the Dark Horse comic-book story from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, and if you are wondering how much time to carve out in your weekend schedule, here’s a hint:

How Many Episodes Are In The Umbrella Academy Season 4?

Six! Although the third season finale arguably could have served as a fitting end to the story, Netflix saw fit to give more closure to the fam, and showrunner Steve Blackman returned for a shorter season than usual. He previously told Entertainment Weekly that “Victor is probably the one sibling who is most comfortable in his skin in season 4.” That checks out with Victor’s evolution in the third season, and elsewhere, Klaus must feel awfully strange without his ghostly companions.

The newfound normies will bring back the usual siblings, including including Victor (Elliot Page), Luther (Tom Hopper), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Diego (David Castañeda), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), and Ben (Justin H. Min). Yes, Ben! This season will also introduce characters portrayed by David Cross, Nick Offerman, and Megan Mullally.

The final apocalypse of the The Umbrella Academy streams on August 8.

Kit Harington Seems Fine With No More Jon Snow And Is Comparing ‘House Of The Dragon’s Success To ‘Better Call Saul’

Jon Snow Game of Thrones
HBO

A sequel is always a risky move, but especially when it comes to TV sequels. With a world as complex as Game of Thrones, there were bound to be many prequels, sequels, and spinoffs. And HBO is doing just that.

But one series that never came to fruition was the Jon Snow spin-off with Kit Harington attached. After years of limbo, the series was officially taken off the table earlier this year, something that Harington wasn’t surprised about.

In an interview with Collider, Harington (who is promoting his role in Industry‘s third season and his werewolf movie, The Beast Within) explained that making a prequel series is a better fit for the Thrones universe, and he isn’t surprised that House of the Dragon came to fruition instead of his Snow sequel.

Harington explained, “I think a prequel is a natural thing to do. They did it with Better Call Saul, and with House of the Dragon. You run into a lot of issues with a sequel,” he said, adding that it would be logistically challenging. “A lot of the cast are done with it by then. So, who are you bringing back? Are you bringing back the same people? So, no, I’m not surprised that a prequel is something that is easier to do. It’s not easier to do, but a more natural place to go.” With Better Call Saul, it worked out because, simply, Bob Odenkirk can do anything. But sequels can be a lot tougher.

While the Snow series was expected to tell the story of what his character did after Thrones, Harington said it was hard to nail down a concrete idea. “With ours, it was just about not finding the right story and not finding something that was worth doing, to bring me back to it and to stay in it. It just made less sense, the longer we went on with it, so we recanted.” Somehow, Better Call Snow just didn’t make much sense. Who would have thought?

We might not see Jon Snow for a while (or ever), but there are plenty of other GoT shows on the way. Just wait until you meet Egg!

Golden Retriever’s unbridled excitement over new dog bed is too sweet not to watch

Dogs of every breed are able to show such excitement over the littlest thing, but Golden Retrievers are just a bit extra. Be it with their favorite toys, snacks, or in this case, their dog beds.

One proud goldie named Winston is winning hearts online, thanks to his adorable reaction to a dog bed upgrade. Which is honestly understandable…the bed is more of a mini couch. Who wouldn’t be excited?

Winston’s mom, Ashley Jance, not only manages to capture the wholesome moment, but provide the perfect narration.

“This is my old bed… and THIS is my new bed!” Jance says as, indeed, we see Winson jump on one bed then bounds to the other, as though he were a kid on Christmas showing off his new toys.

And just like a kid, Winston doesn’t love the idea of sharing, as indicated by the playful growls when Dad tries to sit on his new plush throne.

“He’s like, ‘get up!’” Jance says through giggles.

Down in the comments, viewers seemed to catch Winston’s enthusiasm.

“I love this for you Winston!” one person exclaimed.

Another added, “that is the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time.”

Of course, not all dogs might take to dog beds as happily as Winston did. A survey by the American Pet Products Association found that 62% of small dogs, 41% of medium-sized dogs and 32% of large dogs sleep with their owners.

But even for pups who don’t take to their own bed immediately, there are certain steps that can be taken to make the bed feel a bit more appealing. Mostly it takes establishing routine and safety along with some patience as a pet owner.

Or..maybe pet owners could just show their furry friends this video of Winston…because boy is his energy contagious.

By the way, if you’re interested in getting a dog bed just like Winston’s, they’re available on Amazon.
