‘Loki’ Has Revealed Its Main Villain, And It Might Not Be Who You Think It Is

(SPOILERS for Disney+’s Loki and the MCU will be found below.)

We don’t usually think of the second episode of a series as being one filled with intensity and revelation, but then again, not every second episode of the show hits the same way Marvel’s Loki just did. By the time Loki‘s second episode comes to a close, Loki has effectively escaped the TVA and is now in hot pursuit of a devious Loki variant, Lady Loki. Now, for those unfamiliar with Lady Loki, she is a very real Marvel character who spells out trouble for Loki and was speculated to be in the show, so it makes sense why so many would be so quick to identify this character as her. However, I think that’s exactly what Marvel hoped would happen and hides who she truly is.

Marvel

Rather than Lady Loki, it would appear that this woman could actually be Enchantress, a character from the Thor series. In the Marvel Universe, the second Enchantress is a young girl from Oklahoma named Sylvie Lushton, who lived a normal life until the Asgardians moved to Earth following their planet’s destruction. After that, she woke up with unusual powers that, in the comic book series, Loki secretly gave her to mix things up — meaning Loki is responsible for her creation. Interestingly enough, the Marvel show takes us to Oklahoma at the end of the first episode, where the “Loki variant” aka Enchantress, wreaks havoc with her powers.

In addition to this, we see the variant has an extreme distaste for Loki and rejects his name, and has slightly different powers than him, which is why Loki was so quick to grow defensive and explain his own powers to the TVA when they were listing off hers. In addition, Loki makes several comments about how “he wouldn’t treat himself this way,” during their encounter, leading us to theorize it’s because she isn’t a variation of him at all, but rather a different character entirely. Lastly, while Loki’s theory about her using disasters to avoid disturbing the timeline is brilliant, it might be that she isn’t variant at all and is doing as she is intended as Enchantress.

To further bolster this theory, some on Twitter are sharing screencaps of the Spanish dub credits, which vary from the English credits that refer to the character as “The Variant.” Below, she’s referred to as “Sylvie.”

It’s a lot to speculate on, and unfortunately, there’s a little bit more to consider when it comes this show’s villains as well.

If we want to dive a bit deeper into some fan theories, I might even argue the “and it might not be who you think,” part of this headline could extend to someone else: Kang the Conqueror. While Kang isn’t scheduled to make his big MCU debut until 2023, when Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hits theaters, there are a few things that point to his involvement in Loki. You might have noticed Ravonna Renslayer is a bit… off. It’s apparent to her favorite colleague Mobius, and it’s pretty darn apparent to us as well. It would appear there is someone else in her life she is seeing behind closed doors, and while we’re still unsure just what is going on there, it’s worth mentioning she canonically has a very close relationship with none other than Kang in the Marvel Universe.

You see, in the comics Ravonna is the daughter of King Carelius, the future ruler of Earth. During her father’s reign, Kang comes to the kingdom of Carelius — the last bastion of humanity on Earth — and attempts to conquer the land, but ultimately stands down after meeting Ravonna and falling in love with her. Despite his best efforts, Ravonna refuses to reciprocate his love because he is a commoner, which ultimately leads him to make a pretty intense promise to her: to bring Avengers to their future so he can fight them and show her his true power in battle, ultimately winning her heart. It could very well be the fabled Time Keepers do not exist and there is no scared timeline, but rather the whole TVA is made up of people Kang is using to carry out his will and win the love of Ravonna. Whew.

Looks like we’ll have to wait until next Wednesday to get some more answers.

Mystics’ Elena Delle Donne May Not Return Until August After The Olympic Break

Mystics MVP Elena Delle Donne is recovering from a pair of back procedures and has had her return date pushed back several times this season. Originally, there was hope she’d open the season on restricted minutes, then she was ruled out for the first two-to-six games, and now, 10 games into Washington’s season, Delle Donne’s return date has been moved even further.

Delle Donne has played one-on-one in practice and is working on defensive drills, but is yet to play five-on-five, head coach Mike Thibault said, and she could sit until after the Olympic break in August, via The Washington Post’s Kareem Copeland.

“Certainly she’s going to need team practice time for a number of days before we consider putting her in a game,” Thibault said. “So if we’re two weeks from now [and] we’re still wondering about that then, yeah, it’s probably more likely coming out of the break. But we’re not saying it’s absolute at this point.”

This is brutal news for Mystics fans, who haven’t seen Delle Donne play since she helped win the franchise’s first championship in 2019. The team had every expectation to run it back in 2020 until the coronavirus pandemic reached the United States. Several key players including Delle Donne opted out of playing in the bubble, and the Mystics lost in the first round of the playoffs.

Injury news and a chaotic offseason have completely altered the makeup of this year’s Mystics team, too. Two-way wing Aerial Powers and Sixth Woman of the Year candidate Tianna Hawkins signed elsewhere over the winter, center LaToya Sanders retired and joined the franchise as an assistant coach, new signee Alysha Clark suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury before the start of the season, and 2019 Finals MVP Emma Meesseman has yet to play due to overseas commitments.

The injury bug hasn’t left the team either as point guard Natasha Cloud is battling a hip flexor injury that caused her to leave Sunday’s game in the third quarter, and Sydney Wiese has played in just six games due to an ankle sprain.

Washington has found ways to win this season despite it all. The Mystics are 4-6, staying competitive due to the MVP-caliber play of new-acquisition Tina Charles, who leads the WNBA in scoring at 24.0 points per game. Without Delle Donne down low, she’s had to carry a significant role on both ends of the court, securing 8.4 rebounds with 1.8 assists. She’s owned that spotlight and leads the WNBA in usage rate at 32.1 percent, but if the Mystics want another trophy come October, they’ll need Delle Donne back, too.

If Delle Donne returns in August, she’ll have little time to work her way back into game-shape and get acclimated with her new teammates. The roster looks drastically different than it did two season ago, and after the Olympic break, the Mystics will have only 14 games remaining on their schedule. Four of those games are against the three best teams in the league — the Connecticut Sun, Seattle Storm and Las Vegas Aces — which means the margin for error will be slim for Washington to get a good seed.

Wet Find Hope In Fleeting Love On The Atmospheric Single ‘On Your Side’

Indie pop trio Wet first captivated audiences with the emotive pop heard on their 2014 self-titled debut EP. To date, the group has shared two LPs and a handful of singles in the years following their last studio album, Still Run. But now with the return of all their original members, Wet usher in a new era of music with the tender single “On Your Side.”

The new tune is the first-released track since Wet shared their 2020 single “Come To You,” which debuted just a week before lockdown. “On Your Side” immediately opens with singer Kelly Zutrau’s sun-drenched vocals as she delivers a reflection on reminding someone close to her that she hasn’t given up her commitment to them.

The music itself reflects Zutrau’s reassurance as samples of gentle coos play out underneath atmospheric synths. The intimate production on “On Your Side” is thanks to producer Buddy Ross, who is known for his work with big indie acts like Vampire Weekend, Frank Ocean, Haim, and Bon Iver.

In a statement about the track, Zutrau says she tried to capture the feeling of fleeting love:

“‘On Your Side’ is about the feeling of embodying unconditional love as a special and fleeting experience. Even though it sounds contradictory, unconditional and fleeting, it’s about that duality. I often find myself in more ambivalent places in relationships and then when it happens it’s epic like planets and trees and rivers and then like that it’s gone again. I think I wanted to capture it as a way of holding onto that feeling. To me a lot of love songs are about capturing that quick moment before it’s gone, there’s a desperation to it.”

Mike Lindell’s Plot To Sabotage ‘The Daily Show’ And Jordan Klepper Only Resulted In Him Looking Even More Batsh*t Than Usual

Mike Lindell hosted yet another poorly-attended rally this weekend, this one with Donald Trump in virtual attendance. The former-president wasn’t the headliner, however: Lindell spoke after him, by which point “the crowd, which had begun to filter out after Trump’s speech ended, had already significantly dissipated,” according to the Daily Beast.

Lucky for the sunburned walk-outs, they didn’t miss Lindell ranting about Fox News (“Shame on you, Fox… This is disgusting what they’ve done to our country”), Newsmax (“Look at Newsmax, the cowards there”), and The Daily Show earlier in the afternoon.

What did The Daily Show with Trevor Noah do to Lindell, outside of frequently debunk his wild lies and call him the “alt-right Mario”? Well, the MyPillow founder was interviewed by Jordan Klepper earlier that day and he was unhappy with how it went. To get back at Klepper, Lindell leaked the interview before it could air on Comedy Central.

On Wednesday, Lindell told “Real America’s Voice” host Steve Bannon that Daily Show producers had insisted on conducting his interview in front of portable toilets. Bannon then aired about six minutes of cell phone video showing Daily Show personality Jordan Klepper interviewing Lindell… Lindell appears to be livid.

That’s put it mildly: Lindell is raving through most of the footage he provided, including a heated exchange where he calls Klepper a “jokester, you’re being real funny. Shame on you for what you’ve done to our country when you’re saying stuff like that. This has nothing to do with the pillow!” (I need to start using “this has nothing to do with the pillow” in casual conversation.) Later, Klepper says that instead of watching Lindell’s “cyber evidence,” he’d rather binge Mare of Easttown. After initially being confused, Lindell replies, “I don’t watch trash. I spend my time trying to evangelize. We’re in the greatest revival in history. Our country wants to get back to one nation under God.”

Lindell was trying to pull one over on The Daily Show and Klepper (I guess???), but it did not work. He ended up making himself look more nutty than usual.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Posted The Opposite Of A ‘Jacked’ Photo To Show Off Prep Work For ‘Aquaman 2’

When one prepares to play a superhero (or supervillain, or antihero) these days, the customary social-media behavior is to post proof that one’s getting “jacked” for the role. No pain, no gain, after all. That’s why Chris Hemsworth‘s jacked arms are getting even more airplay that usual (that, and he’s portraying Hulk Hogan in a biopic) for Thor: Love And Thunder, and The Rock‘s jacked legs are even more superhuman-looking than usual as film (finally) rolls on Black Adam. Jensen Ackles, who’s picking up The Boys‘ Soldier Boy role, also begrudgingly got into the jacked-photo game while remarking, “[M]aybe I’m just too old for this crap.”

Well, Yayha Abdul-Mateen II, who is revisiting his Black Manta role for the upcoming Aquaman 2 production, isn’t playing that game. At least, he’s not showing that game off. Here’s Yayha’s Instagram of some sequel prep work, which involves him lounging on a very comfortable looking bed in casual, non-gym attire, while simply captioning with “Aquaman” and a peace sign. He’s doing his thing. I can respect it.

As long as he’s comfy! And he’s surely much more comfy than The Rock during his several hours per day in the gym. Meanwhile, Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, has not posted a “ripped” photo that’s specifically themed to sequel prep, but Amber Heard, who is returning as Queen Mera, sort-of did. Heard posted an Instagram video with this caption: “Abs-olutely dying! #aquaman2.” She also (possibly) trolled her haters with M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” playing in the background, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a signal to those who petitioned to have her fired after the Johnny Depp libel-trial mess.

Jeff Tweedy And Nick Offerman Team Up For A Song From The ‘Parks And Rec’ Mouse Rat Album

Now is probably the best time to be a Parks And Recreation fan since the show was actually on the air with new episodes. A month ago, it was announced that the show’s fictional, Chris Pratt-led band Mouse Rat will be releasing an actual album, The Awesome Album. Aside from Mouse Rat themselves, the tracklist features appearances from Duke Silver (aka Ron Swanson, aka Nick Offerman), Scott Tanner (a character played by Jeff Tweedy), and Tanner’s band Land Ho.

Now “Cold Water,” the Tanner song which also features Silver, has been shared. Silver plays soxophone on the very Wilco-esque song, and it might actually be Offerman performing, as he plays the sax in real life. In a 2011 interview, Parks And Rec creator Michael Schur noted, “The Duke Silver saxophone playing is also a real-life Nick Offerman thing. Nick really plays the saxophone, that’s really him playing in the episode from season two. […] We could probably just base episodes around Nick Offerman’s real-life skills and have a long and happy run.”

It appears Tweedy and Offerman have struck up a friendship since Tweedy’s time on the show. In 2014, Offerman directed the video for “Low Key” by Tweedy’s band Tweedy. In 2019, Tweedy told a story about a recent hike he and Offerman had enjoyed together, saying, “People that hike is really his demographic and it was not necessarily mine, so a lot of people came up to him and talked about his show and they totally neglected me, even though it’s my show, too.”

Listen to “Cold Water” above.

The Awesome Album is out 8/27 via Dualtone/Entertainment 720. Pre-order it here.

Juan Toscano-Anderson Will Always ‘Try To Find Ways To Help People’

It’s been quite the year for Golden State Warriors forward Juan Toscano-Anderson. On the court, Toscano-Anderson’s years-long journey through professional leagues in Mexico, Venezuela, and the G League culminated in him becoming a fan favorite with his hometown team. Toscano-Anderson had a cup of coffee with the Dubs last season prior to the league’s shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which he parlayed into a two-way contract this year.

Eventually, Toscano-Anderson’s hard-nosed style of play and popularity within the organization led to him receiving a two-year deal with the Warriors. As Draymond Green told us earlier this year, “I love Juan, man. A guy who got out the mud, who played in Mexico and played overseas. I think Juan, his senior year of college, maybe averaged six or seven points, and now he’s in the NBA contributing on an NBA team.”

But perhaps Toscano-Anderson’s biggest contributions came off the court. The winner of the 2019-20 NBA G League Community Assist Award, Toscano-Anderson was named a finalist for the inaugural Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award, which the league will give out to “a current NBA player for pursuing social justice and advancing Abdul-Jabbar’s life mission to engage, empower and drive equality for individuals and groups who have been historically marginalized or systemically disadvantaged.” Alongside Toscano-Anderson, whose nomination came because of his work with Black and Latinx communities, the finalists are Carmelo Anthony, Harrison Barnes, Tobias Harris, and Jrue Holiday. Each player chose a social justice-focused organization as part of their nomination, with the winner receiving $100,000 for their org and the remaining four finalists all getting $25,000 each.

The award is scheduled to be announced prior to Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, whenever that comes to happen. Prior to that, Dime caught up with Toscano-Anderson to discuss his nomination and giving back to the community where he grew up.

How does it feel to know your first full season in the league is ending with recognition for your off-court work?

I think it’s really cool. I mean, there are thousands and thousands of basketball players out there, this league is filled with 400 other great basketball players. Basketball players are gonna come and go, and so people eventually forget what you did on the basketball court and unless you’re a Michael Jordan, or a Steph Curry, LeBron James. So for myself — I wouldn’t say I try to, but for myself, this is great to be acknowledged for something outside of on-court activity, and I’m really excited about it. I’m really humbled by it, and it’s really cool to just be acknowledged for it.

Are you someone who has always used whatever platform you have to give back to the community?

Prior to making it to the NBA, I didn’t even necessarily see myself as having a platform. I had like 8,000 followers on Instagram before I got to the NBA, now I have close to 300,000. So, it’s just been a huge growth for myself and my following.

So to answer your question, no, I didn’t always use my platform. I just did things wherever I could, whether that was giving a young kid in high school who has basketball dreams a few pairs of good basketball shoes, some fresh clothes, whatever the case may be. Helping a kid pay some fees for college applications or whatever. I just try to find ways to help people, connect the dots for people. You never know how something that could be so small to myself could be something in the way for other people. Somebody may not be able to afford a $200 application fee or some type of fee, but for myself, thank God that I’m able to afford things like that and that’s pretty light to me, so I just try to find different ways to help people in whatever they need.

One thing that I’ve come to learn is charity-focused athletes are that way in part because people in their lives hammered home giving back. Does that apply to you, and if so, who were those people?

I wouldn’t even necessarily say it was hammered home for me. My mother, 1,000 percent, she’s worked for the city of Oakland ever since I was born — I’m 28 now, so probably for 30, 31 years she’s been working for the city of Oakland. And when I was a kid, she worked with juvenile delinquents. My mom was a single mother, so on Saturdays when she had to go to work and do her juvenile delinquent programs, my brother and I would tag along because my mom couldn’t afford a babysitter and we had nowhere else to go, so we would tag along, and that became a regular thing for us every Saturday. Obviously as we grew up we continued to do those things. When Dorell Wright was with the Warriors, I would volunteer at his Christmas and Thanksgiving giveaways, also.

So, it just became second-nature for us. It was something my mom always has always done and it’s something that … we believe in doing the right thing and helping people, and so it comes pretty natural for my family and I.

I know you’ve been asked this question a million times through the lens of basketball, but as a Bay Area native, how much pride is there in knowing that the stuff you’re doing is helping people in your community?

It’s very humbling, it’s very gratifying. I grew up on 95th and Eighth Street, and on 98th and B Street, there’s a park, but the park was thrashed. I could never go play basketball there, so I had to walk all the way to 85th to use the Boys and Girls Club to go shoot hoops. In these neighborhoods, these kids don’t really have resources.

I was lucky enough to meet some different types of people that helped me with those things — put me in camps, put me on teams, bought me baseball bats and baseball gloves and things like. I’m aware of what’s going on in the neighborhood that I grew up in and surrounding neighborhoods and neighborhoods alike. There’s not many resources, there’s not many outlets for these kids. And so I want to change that, because there’s a lot of talent in these neighborhoods, there’s a lot of creators, there’s a lot of entrepreneurs, there’s a lot of kids who want to do great things in their lives but they’re hindered by the lack of resources. So it’s very gratifying to me, I’m happy to help. No deed is too small or too big to help somebody, so I’m excited about all that.

Can you give me a run through of that some of the stuff that you’ve done off the court and why those have been the areas of focus for you?

We’ve done a lot. I bought Christmas trees for Christmas, I bought 35 Christmas trees along with gift cards to Safeway, so families could have dinner, as well. I’m a shoe collector, but I’m not a hoarder. So when I buy new shoes I try to get rid of my old shoes, so I always find a young man who’s you know doing well in school, maybe pursuing basketball, I’m giving away basketball shoes — I try to find people who can use the things that I have. We adopt families for Christmas. My family and I, we adopt families for Christmas. We’ve done some stuff, sending a bunch of money and clothing and gear down to the small town that my family’s from. I do some free clinics in Mexico from time to time, I actually have an upcoming two-week tour of clinics that I’m going to do in Mexico, among many other thing, the list goes on.

Like I said, it comes very naturally for my family and I, it could be an everyday thing for us. There was a homeless family living outside of my mom’s job, we paid for them to stay in a hotel for a couple months to help them get back on their feet, and I’m so happy to see that they’re doing well. It was a small family of two parents and baby girl, and now they’re living in a home. I would never say that it is because of me and my family, but we just led a helping hand to those people who needed it. Those things are very gratifying.

There was a really great piece in The Undefeated a few months back where you said, “I’m not comfortable at all, I still feel like my back is against the wall,” and, “I want to do something to solidify myself, I want to have longevity in this league.” Now that this season is over, do you feel like you have solidified yourself as someone who is able to make a difference on and off the basketball court?

Yes and no. Do I feel solidified? A little bit, I feel like I’ve made a name for myself ,but I still feel the same pressure every day. As an African-American male, I feel like your job is never done. As a male in general, I feel like your job is never done, you have to continue to raise the bar for the people around you. If you decide to have a family some day, you are the head of your household. You have to continue to raise the bar for the people who are looking to you for advice or protection. So, as a young African-American male, I can only speak for myself I feel the pressure all the time. And I guess that’s self-inflicted pressure, which is a gift and a curse. It puts the battery in my back for me to wake up every day and go hard, regardless of where I get in this league or where I get in life.

That’s why I admire guys like LeBron James — he could easily just be like, “I’m the greatest basketball player. I got a billion dollar Nike deal, I’m set.” But he continues to create opportunities for children in his schools, production companies, movie roles, all the stuff with Uninterrupted giving people platforms and things like that. That’s why I admire that guy, because he looks to raise the bar, and that’s my motto, just continue to raise the bar.

This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

Allblack And Vince Staples Brush Off Every Setback In Their ‘We Straight’ Video

Bay Area rapper Allblack released his debut album TY4FWM in May, spawning videos for singles “Ego” featuring Drakeo The Ruler and “War Stories” with Mozzy. Today, he added another to the growing collection, bringing in yet another of his West Coast homies, Vince Staples, to complete the video for “We Straight.” The greyscale video sees the two California rappers hanging out on the block with flashes of still photos breaking up the action.

TY4FWM (short for “Thank You For F*cking With Me”) arrived after a string of releases from Allblack, who’s been quietly building his catalog since 2017, including No Shame 3 in 2020. The debut album is the culmination of these releases, with features from both high-profile Bay Area icons like E-40 and G-Eazy, as well as rising stars like Guapdad 4000, Rexx Life Raj, and ShooterGang Kony.

Meanwhile, Vince Staples has been teasing the release of his own new music, with two albums set for release in 2021, starting with his comeback single “Law Of Averages,” dropping this week. In the meantime though, he’s put in his fair share of appearances as a feature artist on tracks like “In My Stussy’s” by Lil Yachty.

Indigo De Souza’s ‘Kill Me’ Video Is Wrestlemania For Cake-Sitting Divorcees

Indie wunderkind, Indigo De Souza, is rolling out her next album release with a… splat. The new video for “Kill Me” blends heartache with the grotesque — giving off some heavy Requiem For A Dream vibes. De Souza chirps in a fluffy soprano while digging her Kermit-green nails into a raggedy old cake. The video follows a Wrestlemania nightmare between a man and a pregnant woman, in their respective corners of a ring before slapping their bodies with the destroyed desserts.

To the uninitiated, cake sitting is all about the squirm/satisfaction factor. And the way “Kill Me” applies that spectacle to the even-more messed up performance of custody battles and divorce is revelatory. “Cake sitting is this wonderful art form, rampant with metaphors of creation and destruction, engaging in equal parts with desire and disgust,” said the video’s director Jordan Alexander. “It lends itself to the song and Indigo came over to test it out and was way better at it than I am.”

De Souza said she wrote “Kill Me” when she was “deeply consumed in a big, crazy love and coming to terms with the reality of living with mental illness.” She recorded a demo of what would become the song in 2018, sitting on her kitchen floor and singing into her laptop webcam. When she recovered the video years later, she barely recognized the broken girl she once was. “It was such a strange feeling watching the video because I couldn’t remember writing the song, but little bits and pieces of it felt familiar to me. It felt like it had been a lot longer than a year.”

“Kill Me” is the first single from De Souza’s new album, Any Shape You Take, which was produced by Brad Cook and recorded at Sylvan Esso’s studio, Betty’s, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Angering Michael Strahan Was The ‘Nail In The Coffin’ For Chris Harrison Tenure As Host Of ‘The Bachelor’

Following a long-simmering controversy involving his defense of a contestant’s “antebellum” photos, The Bachelor host Chris Harrison officially exited the series in early June after tense negotiations that reportedly netted him an eight-figure payout after he threatened to air the show’s dirty laundry. Now, details on Harrison’s exits are emerging, and a new report is citing his disastrous interview with Michael Strahan as the beginning of the end of his Bachelor career.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Strahan was not pleased with interviewing Harrison in a blatant attempt to pave the way for his return to The Bachelor. Harrison had stepped down as host after defending frontrunner Rachel Kirkconnell whose social medial revealed that she participated in an Antebellum-themed sorority party. However, Harrison’s absence was only supposed to be temporary, but all of that changed after Strahan voiced his concerns live on the air. Via THR:

“His apology is his apology, but it felt like I got nothing more than a surface response. Only time will tell if there is any meaning behind his words.” The produced nature of the sit-down that Strahan publicly objected to was an approach seemingly designed to protect Harrison. The GMA host was unhappy with the substance of the interview, sources tell THR. “That interview was the nail in the coffin” for Harrison’s return, adds a source close to the production.

While Harrison wasn’t publicly receiving support from producers at the time, privately, they were making plans to reinstate him until the Strahan interview started a cascading effect. Harrison would exit the show less than 90 days later.
