A 94-year-old widower built a community pool to share with everyone after losing his wife

Keith Davidson, a 94-year-old retired district court judge lost Evy, his dear wife of 66 years in April 2016. The feeling of grief and loss was overwhelming.

“You just can’t imagine what it’s like,” he said. “You cry a lot. That’s just the way it is because she’s not here,” he told “Boyd Huppert’s Land of 10,000 Stories,” in a story that first appeared in 2017.

After living in a house that felt far too quiet for over a year, he decided to open his home to the kids of the neighborhood by building a pool. Davidson lives in the small town of Morris, Minnesota where there is no place for the community to swim.

“This spring when I saw him marking the yard, I told my husband, he’s really going to put a pool in his backyard,” his neighbor Jessica Huebner said. Davidson has led an active life, he’s a bass and tuba player with area musical organizations and was a radio operator for the Army in World War II.

Davidson went all out with his pool, it’s 32 feet long, 16-feet wide, and nine feet deep under the diving board, a pretty big undertaking for a man in his 90s.

After the pool was completed in July 2017, neighborhood families flocked to Davidson’s backyard. “I knew they’d come,” Davison said, laughing.

“Now we’re going to be here every day,” said Jaime Mundal, a neighborhood mom.

The judge has three children, but no grandchildren. So the young company is more than welcome. His pool rules require a parent or grandparent to be present when children are swimming.

“You kind of adopted our whole neighborhood of kids, these are your grandkids,” Huebner told Davidson. “It’s him spreading joy throughout our neighborhood for these kids,” Huebner told “10,000 Stories.”

Now, instead of being stuck in the house on sunny afternoons, Davidson watches the kids splash around his yard, knocking around volleyballs, and sucking down fruit punch.

He takes it all in from his lawn chair.

“I’m not sitting by myself looking at the walls,” he smiled. Besides, Davison asks, “What else would you think of doing where you could have a whole bunch of kids over every afternoon?”

However, the kids aren’t the only ones having fun at Davidson’s house. He likes to jump in for a dip himself from time to time.

Davidson’s decision to open his home to the community at the age of 94 was a wonderful way for him to help his neighbors as well as himself. Grief experts say that one of the best ways for widows and widowers to overcome the tremendous feeling of loss is to get back into enjoying life by socializing and spending time with people who share the same hobbies.

Hanging around with children all day is also a great way for a nonagenarian to stay young.

The U.S. women’s soccer team national anthem controversy isn’t at all what you think it is

Let’s start with the facts.

Last night, the U.S. women’s soccer team played against Mexico’s women’s team at a game held in Hartford, Connecticut. Before the match, 98-year-old WWII veteran Pete DuPré played the national anthem on the harmonica. Some of the women on the team turned to face the American flag that was flying at the end of the field during the performance. Some of the women remained facing forward—toward Dupré, the same direction he was facing. All stood silently, some with their hands on their hearts, some with their hands clasped behind their backs.

Those are the facts. Nothing about any of those actions should have been controversial. And yet, we now have countless Americans rooting against the U.S. National Women’s Team because they believe some players either turned their back on a veteran or turned their back on the flag.

The manufactured controversy came swift and hard from the “anti-wokeness” crowd, who boast huge followings on social media. I won’t share the posts themselves as I don’t think viral lies should get more traffic, but fact-checker Daniel Dale’s screenshots offer a taste of the lies being pushed, including from the former Acting Director of U.S. National Intelligence.

pbs.twimg.com

pbs.twimg.com

pbs.twimg.com

That’s just a small sampling. There are also comments galore on these posts as well as the ESPN post above with people railing against the team, hoping for them to lose, accusing them of disrespecting the country, the flag, and/or the veteran performing.

Athletes have demonstrated during the anthem before, of course, which they have the right to do. But that’s not what happened here.

Some of the outlets that ran with the story issued quiet corrections. Some of the influencers who tweeted their outrage added “updates,” which most of their followers will never see (instead of just deleting their original tweets and issuing new ones explaining that they were wrong and don’t want to be part of spreading misinformation).

U.S. Soccer issued a statement clarifying the situation, which shouldn’t have been necessary because we can see with our own eyes what actually happened. And even with the video clearly showing what happened, people are still responding with claims that the players were disrespectful.

Perhaps it’s a bit of a Sophie’s choice to be presented with a veteran playing the anthem facing one direction and the American flag facing a different direction, but no one can seriously claim that facing either one of them during the anthem is disrespectful.

It’s not the “which way should you face in this situation” that’s the real controversy. It’s the claim that “they turned away from the flag” or “they turned away from the veteran while he played the anthem,” when it’s clear that no one actually “turned away” from anything. They were all facing the direction of the veteran to start off with. Some chose to turn toward the flag when the anthem started playing. If you look at the audience in the video, it’s the same thing—some people are facing the flag and some are facing the veteran who is performing.

It’s just baffling how many people are still claiming that team members were being disrespectful, even in the face of clear video evidence to the contrary. It’s like the story they heard and chose to believe got stuck in their brains, making it impossible for them to see anything else.

We can disagree on ideas and ideologies and discuss them all day long, but people can’t just create their own reality. I firmly believe that we can sit down and work out—or at least work through—our various perspectives and beliefs when we at least agree on the facts. But we can’t debate ideas if they are based on alternate realities that aren’t actual realities.

If you tell me “BLM protesters burned Portland, Oregon to the ground!” I don’t see how we can discuss racial injustice in a meaningful way, because your belief about the Black Lives Matter movement is not based on fact. If you tell me that the COVID vaccines are more dangerous than COVID, or that they turn you magnetic, or that they contain microchips, then we can’t discuss the merits of public health measures because what you believe is objectively, verifiably, indisputably false.

America’s biggest problem is not that we lack shared values or that we are divided over ideas, even if we are. The bigger, more dangerous divide is reality vs. unreality and facts vs. “alternative facts.” Unfortunately, we have a whole slew of media personalities who excel at using falsehood to manipulate people’s outrage and fuel the misinformation machinery that makes them gobs of money. And we have too many people who can’t seem to discern a fact from a hole in the ground and who refuse to admit when they get the objective facts wrong.

It’s like the old parable of the blind men describing an elephant differently depending on what part of the elephant they’re touching. Sharing their various descriptions based on their individual perspectives add up to a fuller picture of reality, right? But what if one of those men insisted that what he’s touching isn’t actually an elephant, but an ostrich? That person’s perspective loses its value immediately. You can’t discuss a perspective that’s based on a falsehood.

The information age requires digging through muck and mire of misinformation, and we all get it wrong sometimes. But if we don’t do the digging for the truth before forming and expressing an opinion and if we don’t thoroughly correct our mistakes after the facts are made clear, what are we even doing?

We can deal with different beliefs, we can discuss our diverse opinions, but we can’t coexist in separate realities. It just can’t work. We have to insist on objective truth as the baseline for everything else, or we’ll never be able to discuss our perspectives on reality in a way that might actually move us forward as a society.

2K’s NFL Arcade Game Is Something We Have Been Missing For Too Long

Fans of sports games have never been in a bigger ditch than the last 10 or so years. While games like Madden, FIFA, and NBA 2K have pushed simulation game technology to its limits and attempted to make the best sports games possible, it has come at the cost of a lack of variety. Sports fans don’t really get much of a choice these days when they get to itch play a football game, basketball game, or really any kind of sports game. They have their standard simulation games and not much else to choose from. However, we may be on the precipice of a change that is going to inject some new life into the sports game genre.

We’re finally starting to see some arcade games again! Once a goliath of the entire genre, sports arcade games were one of the major casualties of video games moving to HD. For whatever reason, starting with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the licensed arcade sports game took a major step to the side. This may have something to do with a lot of those sports leagues becoming more involved in how they choose to hand out their licensing, how much more expensive video games were becoming to make, or the inability to attach microtransactions to them. We still saw some here and there, but they lacked the same level of polish and detail of games that we all fell in love with like NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, NBA Street, NFL Street, etc. For a long time, the only way to play a fun arcade-style sports game was to rely on one of the Mario sports games or to play an unlicensed game like Super Mega Baseball. These obviously have their place and are very fun in their own right, but there’s something about taking an established star on our favorite team and performing acrobatic feats that are impossible in reality.

Soon, we will get a return to the arcade sports genre with 2K’s newest NFL game. They were recently given the license to make non-simulated NFL games again. While fans of the original NFL 2K series may be disappointed, this could be a great moment for video games as a whole. For starters, it’s an opportunity to have a different kind of football game out there that isn’t Madden. EA Sports College Football likely won’t be out until 2023 at the earliest, and unlicensed football games have never done particularly well. More importantly, though, it’s an opportunity to play a style of game that doesn’t get made enough of anymore.

Arcade sports games are fun because they aren’t as serious as their simulation counterparts. Yes, we all get the desire to live out our dreams of being an NFL coach and taking our favorite team to the Super Bowl, but sometimes you just want to break free of the more restrictive, realistic elements of sports games. You know those clips in Madden where someone takes Lamar Jackson and runs an entire loop around the football field? Those immersion breaking moments in simulation games are expected in arcade games and they’re more fun because of it.

Arcade sports games also bring in a different kind of audience. There are plenty of people out there that don’t really enjoy watching sports, but who really enjoy arcade sports games. There are plenty of people who get the latest Mario Golf or Tennis game that don’t spend a single minute of their lives watching those sports, because they just enjoy playing the arcade style games. These same people also enjoy games like NBA Jam, because of the over the top nature of them. There’s no need to be a sports fan to appreciate an arcade style game and sometimes it can even bring in new fans. This may be why the NFL looked into giving out their license for an arcade style game.

So what exactly do we want from NFL 2K’s arcade rebirth in particular? Chaos. The best way for any of these arcade style games to succeed is to provide the most chaos possible. Let players chuck a football 80 yards, give them turbo boosters, and add in a whole lot of flash. Embrace the absurdity of everything and the details of the game will work itself out. However, anyone that was hoping for a return to the NFL Blitz formula is going to be out of luck. This is still the NFL we’re talking about and their desire to promote player safety likely played a role in why games like NFL Street were discontinued. They don’t want games that promote and glorify the violence of the sport and that was what NFL Blitz embraced above all else. Expect 2K’s game to put more emphasis on absurd physics and less on crushing hits. It wouldn’t be surprising if, when the game comes out, the style of the game is extremely cartoonish to make the violence that does exist in the game feel less realistic.

If all of us are lucky the NFL 2K game will be wildly successful. Even EA has said that it wants the game to succeed, because then that means we’re going to get more of it and in other genres too. Imagine an NBA Jam revival that’s actually good this time? If licensed arcade games work then maybe we’ll see some from more obscure sports. Snowboarding is already appearing primed for a return to the arcade scene with games like Shredders on the way, hoping to tap into a market that’s been begging for an SSX Tricky revival.

It’s time for arcade sports to make their return. They’ve been laying dormant for too long and there’s too many people out there that want to play them. Hopefully 2K’s next NFL game is the right kind of game to kick off a new generation of arcade sports.

Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig Sings In An Absurd New ‘I Think You Should Leave’ Sketch

Today is a big day in the sketch comedy world, as a new season of the beloved Tim Robinson series I Think You Should Leave premiered today on Netflix. Vampire Weekend fans were quick to notice that Ezra Koenig actually makes an appearance in the new season, via some vocals in a new song.

Not to give away too much about the sketch in question (which begins at about 10:30 into the second episode of the new season, titled “They have a cake shop there Susan where the cakes just look stunning”), but it starts with Robinson’s character holding a baby at a party. From there, the situation escalates in the absurd way things tend to on the show. The segment wraps up with a song sung by Koenig, which starts at about 14:30 into the episode. His vocals are Auto-Tuned as his track scores scenes of a wild night out and then continues into the episode’s credits.

While there doesn’t appear to be any standalone clips of the song or sketch available online, a Reddit user shared the audio of the song. Koenig’s name is not mentioned in the episode’s credits, but he acknowledged his inclusion by posting a couple of screenshots from the sketch on his Instagram Story.

Bad Bunny Returns With A Surprise New Trap Banger, ‘De Museo’

It hasn’t been long since fans have been treated to new Bad Bunny music, as he just dropped off a “song of the summer” contender, “Yonaguni,” back in June. Now, out of nowhere, he’s back with more, as he has shared the club-ready trap banger “De Museo” with no advance warning.

Although the track isn’t officially included in the Fast 9 soundtrack, it does appear in the latest Fast & Furious film. Bad Bunny, by the way, actually has a brief role in the movie, playing the part of “Lookout.”

Perhaps the new song will find its way into setlists on Bad Bunny’s upcoming tour, which is set to be a huge one. The trek, in support of his 2020 album El Último Tour Del Mundo, will start in February 2022 and run through to that April. Fans were eager to get tickets, as the tour was one of the fastest-selling in Ticketmaster history and the fastest-selling since 2018.

Aside from music, Bad Bunny has become an established part of the WWE universe over the past few months. He held a championship belt of his own for the first time in February, and he was a big hit during his Wrestlemania debut in April.

Blxst Breaks Down His ‘How I Blew Up’ Story From Humble Beginnings To Stardom

In the latest episode of Uproxx’s newest show, How I Blew Up narrated by Cherise Johnson, LA native and XXL Freshman Blxst breaks down his rise to stardom, from humble beginnings as just another aspiring artist tweeting links at stars to receiving comparisons to late West Coast great Nate Dogg thanks to his smooth vocal ability. “Early on I was really rapping,” he recalls. “Until I really got comfortable with my singing voice, I was kinda insecure back then.” However, he says, he eventually grew into his talent, ending up on many other rappers’ hooks, including YG and Mozzy’s “Perfect Timing.”

He also explains how one of his greatest struggles, fatherhood, helped make him “more purposeful.” The tumultuous period immediately after his son was born “made me realize that it’s not all about me — it just put extra pressure that I needed.” The video traces the growth in Blxst’s career from his start releasing music while attending Upland High School to working on his next collaborative mixtape with frequent collaborator Bino Rideaux (recently releasing the video for the lead single “Movie“), as well as his upcoming debut full-length album, riding the success of his 2020 EP No Love Lost.

Logan Roy Is Not F*cking Around In The Intense New Teaser Trailer For Season 3 Of HBO’s ‘Succession’

In a surprise drop considering these COVID times have thrown release schedules to the wind, HBO has released the first teaser trailer for season three of Succession. Right off the bat, the season premiere is now slated for Fall 2021, which isn’t a firm date, but we’ll take it. More importantly, the teaser shows that the razor-sharp writing and acting is still as acerbic as ever as Season 3 will dive right into the fallout of Jeremy Strong’s Kendall Roy finally knifing his father Logan (Brian Cox) in the back during a climactic press conference at the end of Season 2.

As evidenced by the teaser, battle lines are being drawn as Kendall and Logan officially go to war. While Kendall has tried to usurp his father before, those attempts failed miserably and tragically. But this time around, Kendall fired what could be a fatal shot, and Logan is not going down easily. He’s ready to tear Kendall apart in every way possible. Whether it’s in the boardroom, over the phone in a battle of barbs that makes Kendall look like a toddler trying to dunk on Jordan, and even physically if Logan can get his hands on his son.

However, noticeably missing from the teaser are new additions to the cast, Adrian Brody and Alexander Skarsgard, who better be ready with cutting bon mots, or they’re going to get steamrolled just like poor Kendall with his “run up the beanstalk” line. Not quite as embarrassing as the “I love my daddy” rap, but close.

‘The Witcher’ Spinoff Series Has Cast Michelle Yeoh In A Major Role

While there’s still no word on whether or not we’ll get another annoyingly catchy song in the upcoming Witcher spinoff series, it’s clear the show won’t be lacking in talent. Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Star Trek Discovery, Crazy Rich Asians) has been cast in the upcoming Witcher prequel, The Witcher: Blood Origins, as a major character named Scían. As of right now, not much is known about Scían, but based on Netflix’s description of the elven warrior one thing seems pretty clear: she’s going to be a total badass.

“Scían is the very last of her nomadic tribe of sword-elves. No one can come close to her artistry with the blade, and no one carries as much loss within their heart. When a chance presents itself to retrieve a stolen sacred sword, taken from her fallen tribe by nefarious means, she launches herself into a deadly quest that will change the outcome of the Continent.”

Announced last year, The Witcher: Blood Origins takes place roughly 1200 years prior to the events of The Witcher and tells “a story lost to time” in the The Witcher universe: The Conjunction of the Spheres. The Conjunction of the Spheres refers to the cataclysmic event in which the many universes existing in the world of The Witcher collided into one another, creating multidimensional rifts that allowed supernatural creatures and magic to enter the world. The event plunged the world into a time of darkness and despair, pushing several towards the brink of extinction while providing others with opportunities to relocate and seize power. According to Netflix, the six-episode series will explain how exactly this event occurred, as well as how the first witchers came to be.

Yeoh will be joining Game of Thrones actor Laurence O’Fuarain as well as Iron First and The Originals writer Declan de Barra on the project that is scheduled to begin shooting later this year. Here’s hoping we learn even more about The Witcher: Blood Origins — and The Witcher Season 2 — during this weekend’s first-ever WitcherCon, held exclusively online on YouTube and Twitch July 9-10.

We Can’t Find A Single Fault With This 25-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

The word “best” sure does get thrown around a lot in the whiskey world. Lord knows I’m guilty of it. But there are bottles of whisk(e)y that do stand out and rise above the scores of other entries in the field. One of those bottles is one of my favorite whiskies of all time, Talisker 25.

I have a deep love for Talisker. It was the first real single malt I was introduced to (by my father-in-law) on my first ever trip to Edinburgh. So the nostalgia factor is through the roof. Then, I ended up going to the Isle of Skye, drinking Talisker 25 in the shadow of The Old Man of Storr while looking out over the sea. Needless to say, my brain is programmed to prefer this whisky.

But there’s more to it than just that. This is a bottle I never hesitate to buy because it’s what I truly want to drink — more than any bourbon, rye, Canadian whisky, or… any other style, frankly. It’s not that I don’t deeply enjoy those whiskeys or love showing them off and leading tastings with friends and all of you. Talisker 25 is just more personal. It’s my whisky. It’s what I reach for at the end of the week or after a long, hard spell. Comfort food, but with whisky.

Let’s dive into what’s in a bottle of Talisker 25. And if this sounds like something you’d dig, click on the price to grab your own bottle.

Talisker 25

Diageo

ABV: 45.8%

Average Price: $600

The Whisky:

This whisky is a marriage of American bourbon barrels, Spanish sherry casks, and Talisker’s seaside location. The whiskies in this single malt spend a minimum of 25 years resting in old bourbon and sherry barrels a few short steps from the sea in the Isle of Skye. Talisker’s tiny warehouse feels a bit like an old pirate ship that’s seen too many sea battles and that aura is imbued into every barrel as it matures.

Tasting Notes:

This one opens with a note of wet wildflowers next to sweet beeswax candles (unlit) with hints of murky apple cider, creamy chocolate, and a whisper of briny campfire smoke. The taste really brings out the wooden beams of the Talisker warehouse with notes of sea salt next to cobwebs and wet moss that’s all counterpointed by a blossoming wisteria, orange tobacco, and a little bit more of that campfire smoke lurking in the background. The end holds onto the florals as it slowly fades away, leaving you with a wisp of smoke, a mist of sea spray, and a touch of that orange.

The Bottle:

The bottle is that classic scotch single malt bottle that feels like it was built to be stored on a roving sea vessel 200 years ago. The real highlight is the box with a velvet cushion. It’s a nice touch that elevates this beyond just glass and cardboard.

Bottom Line:

This isn’t an either/or whisky. It’s not going to either push you deeper or push you away. This whisky is so well-rounded, soft, and inviting that it can only pull you deeper into the world of subtle single malts and whisky in general.

Is it the best whisky is in the world? Right now, maybe. For my palate, 100 percent. Tomorrow, who knows? That all being said, it’s so rare to find something this refined, dialed, and (relatively) easy to find that will elevate your palate with every single sip. All of that makes it pretty damn special.

Rating:

100/100 — This is perfect. Or, if it isn’t, I’m not able to think of why.
