Glen Powell Has Been Quietly Finishing Up A Life Goal As He Continues Charming The World

It’s never too late to get an education. In fact, more people should consider sharpening up on those skills later in life, especially actors. Those streaming gigs won’t last forever! Time to brush up on your times tables and learn some real skills, aside from just crying on cue and winning awards.

Glen Powell is the movie star of the summer, but he also knows how important an education is, so he has decided to finish his college degree at the University of Texas at Austin over Zoom. “I’m not going to be sitting in a class with other students on the regular,” Powell told IndieWire. Even though he won’t be in the class, he will still be doing assignments and the work.

“I’m obviously going to be coming in, Zooming in for classes and whatnot, but I have to be back for the proctored exams,” Powell explained. “I’m basically going to be coming back because I have to finish up, but I’m going to be shooting The Running Man in the fall. So I’m going to be in London, but I am going to be going back for proctored exams. So, they’re letting me figure it out [with] distance learning.” The degree, as he previously mentioned, is in Spanish and Early American History.

When he’s not studying history textbooks, Powell will work on The Running Man remake with director Edgar Wright. “Edgar has been very nice about letting me finish my degree in the middle of his massive movie,” he said. “The world that Edgar’s developed on this thing is just outrageous. It’s so good. And really, we’re just both such big fans of the Stephen King book, and it’s going to be a great character. I’m so fired up about it.”

Eventually, Powell can take this degree and become a teacher who moonlights as an FBI agent. That will be some full circle stuff.

Indie Mixtape 20: Perennial Give A Lesson In ‘Art History’

Perennial FEATURED
Perennial

Despite their band name, Perennial pride themselves on a ferocious brevity. Their new album, Art History, features 12 songs, only three of which are longer than two minutes. That’s because the punk trio refuse to stay in the same place for long. They shift gears on a dime, resulting in a dizzying yet laser-focused album that shows Perennial’s mastery of one concept, be it surf rock, post-punk, or blues rock, only to toss it aside in favor of another idea.

Guitarist Chad Jewett, drummer Ceej Dioguardi, and electric organist Chelsey Hahn have created something akin to a musical theme park with spooky haunted houses and classic carnival games abutting a cartoony water slide and modern arcade. It’s a lot of ideas in not a lot of time, but that’s what makes Art History such a fun ride.

Following the record’s release in June, Jewett sat down with Uproxx to talk about Otis Redding, The Hives, and Wasabi the Cat in our latest Q&A.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Electric. Stylish. Impressionistic. Dynamic.

It’s 2050 and the world hasn’t ended and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

As a collection of records that you could dance the night away to, then immediately pore over with your best set of headphones.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform?

It’s a tie between Amherst, Massachusetts and Philadelphia.

Who’s the person who has most inspired your work, and why?

Otis Redding. Seeing and hearing the recordings of Otis Redding’s set at the Monterey Pop Festival (1967) for the first time changed my life. The joy of the performance, the brilliance of the songs, the commitment and energy and love that Otis brought to the stage. And the fact that he managed to convey all of that on his studio records too is so incredibly rare and special. Otis Redding’s work is the example we’re always working toward.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life?

Dishoom (Covent Garden), London.

Tell us about the best concert you’ve ever attended

It’s a three-way tie between Paul McCartney (2002) and The Hives (2023) and The Blood Brothers (2014)

What song never fails to make you emotional?

Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay.”

Who’s your favorite person to follow on social media?

The Hives.

What’s the last thing you Googled?

“American Graffiti filming locations”

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever crashed while on tour?

It’s less “weird” and more “unique” or “singular”, but we stayed at this odd hotel in New Jersey that was like an uncanny time-warp hotel from the 60s/70s in this industrial park in the middle of nowhere. Very mid-century modern. Lots of glass and brutalist touches; orange carpets; groovy light fixtures. You could tell it was designed to be a conference center for the jet set or something but now it’s just totally frozen in time. Love it!

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

Chelsey has a very cool tattoo of Wasabi the Cat, the mysterious fourth member of Perennial and our beloved fluffy tiger cat. We adore Wasabi, so of course a tattoo was a must.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

It’s the advice I’d give to anyone at that time in their life: Care about the things you care about; keep making art, keep being passionate about things; keep going to shows and buying records and spending your time thinking about movies and books and art. That’s the stuff that makes life worth living, whether you’re 18 or 118. Don’t let anyone feed you the lie that growing up means you have to give up the things that make you you. It is your life.

What’s one of your hidden talents?

Chelsey is a brilliant collage artist!

If you had a million dollars to donate to charity, what cause would you support and why?

There are honestly so many answers to this question, but I’ll choose the ASPCA for a very specific reason. About 10 years ago, we rescued our cat, Wasabi, who at the time was ostensibly homeless, sometimes living in an old barn, sometimes living in the woods. Most Perennial fans will probably be familiar with her. She’s the fourth member of the band. She changed our lives. I’m a happier person thanks to her, and it’s beautiful to know we gave her a home where she can feel safe and confident. We love animals and we care deeply about their welfare. There are so many animals out there that could use a home, and so many people who could use that love. Support your local animals shelters, friends!

What are your thoughts about AI and the future of music?

The entire point of art is the connection it forms between the artist and the audience; the artist and themselves; the audience and themselves. Empathy through sharing lived experiences. The idea is that you make something — something uniquely yours because it’s shaped by your insights and hopes and skills and talents — and then someone else, even if it’s just one person, might find in that art something that inspires them, or makes them feel less alone, or helps them make sense of something they could never quite untangle before. AI is entirely devoid of that magic, and robs everyone involved of that chance to connect and empathize.

What is your pre-show ritual?

We eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before every show. Anyone who has seen us play knows there’s a lot of movement, a lot of jumping and dancing and throwing ourselves all over the place. Having a peanut butter sandwich or two right before we play is good clean fuel. Additionally, as Boston Celtics fans (the Celtics famously made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches a ritual during their 2008 championship season) it just made sense.

You have a month off and the resources to take a dream vacation. Where are you going and who is coming with you?

Chelsey and I visited London in 2023 and I absolutely loved it. So I’d be sorely tempted to do it again, hopefully with a larger record-shopping budget.

What is your biggest fear?

Not giving it my all.

Are Sexyy Red And Chief Keef Working On A Joint Album?

sexyy red
Getty Image

Sexyy Red and Chief Keef have shown great chemistry on their collaborations, which include Sexyy’s “F My Baby Dad” and Keef’s “Grape Trees.” In fact, their chemistry is so good that some fans interpreted selfies taken by Sexyy of the two to mean they’re dating (those photos ended up being used in the “F My Baby Dad” video).

While the two may not be an official couple, fans certainly want to hear more of them together — and there is good news on that front, as Sexyy teased the possibility of a joint album between them coming in the near future. While backstage at Wireless Festival in the UK, Sexyy was asked about this possible album, and she answered in the positive, “Yeah, we dropping an album soon… We be working.” She also gave an overview of the content fans can expect from it: “We just be on some money sh*t, some car sh*t, fast cars, f*ck these hoes, buy some clothes, and keep your hair done.”

A fondness for the above subjects isn’t the only thing they share in common, though. Both have seen recent troubles with their planned tours, with Keef postponing his tour the day of its launch for medical reasons and Sexyy insisting that her tour is being sabotaged by nefarious entities. Not for nothing, she said as much as Ticketmaster and Live Nation are being sued by the US Department of Justice for operating a monopoly over the touring space.

Hmmmmm. In any case, we certainly hope to hear more about this album, because it sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun.

Marvel’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Soundtrack Includes… Zendaya And Zac Efron?

deadpool and wolverine
marvel studios

Taylor Swift: not in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Zendaya: in Deadpool & Wolverine… kind of!

Marvel has released the “Van Jamz” tracklist for the soundtrack to the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes songs from The Goo Goo Dolls, Aretha Franklin, and the wickedly talented John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. I don’t know for sure if this is the first time those artists have all been on the same album together, but I’m guessing so.

Anyway, one of the soundtrack highlights is “The Greatest Show,” from 2017’s surprise box office hit The Greatest Showman. This means that a song from one Hugh Jackman movie is another Hugh Jackman movie, and that Zendaya and Zac Efron technically “appear” in Deadpool & Wolverine. Zendaya’s big year keeps getting even bigger.

You can see the tracklist below.

Deadpool & Wolverine Tracklist

1. “Only You (And You Alone)” by The Platters
2. “Bye Bye Bye” by *NSYNC
3. “Angel Of The Morning” by Merrilee Rush & The Turnabouts
4. “Slash” by Stray Kids
5. “Glamorous” by Fergie
6. “Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls
7. “The Power Of Love” by Huey Lewis & The News
8. “I’m A Ramblin’ Man” by Waylon Jennings
9. “You Belong To Me” by Patsy Cline ft. The Jordanaires
10. “The Lady In Red” by Chris de Burgh
11. “I’m With You” by Avril Lavigne
12. “The Greatest Show” by Zac Efron, Zendaya, Hugh Jackman, Keala Settle, and The Greatest Showman Ensemble
13. “You’re The One That I Want” by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta
14. “I’ll Be Seeing You” by Jimmy Durante
15. “Make Me Lose Control” by Eric Carmen
16. “You’re All I Need To Get By” by Aretha Franklin
17. “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)” by Green Day

The Deadpool & Wolverine soundtrack comes out on July 24, followed by the movie on July 26.

What Are The ‘Love Island USA’ Villa Rules?

Love Island Ariana
Peacock

Since this year’s season of Love Island USA has brought in a few new fans, it also means that there are thousands of new viewers who aren’t familiar with The Lore of it all. And that’s okay! You don’t have to watch previous seasons of Love Island USA in order to enjoy the current season. But there are some common Love Island concepts that might be new and unfamiliar to some, so it’s important to know what’s going on over there.

There are no “set” rules, though past islanders have opened up about various strict (and sometimes surprising) guidelines that they had to follow in the villa, and some of them are pretty bizarre. As the islanders exit the villa, they tend to appear on TikTok and podcasts sharing their experience and tidbits about the entire process, which does not sound like a breezy tropical vacation. Here are some Love Island guidelines that you should know about.

They do have phones, but can’t do much with them

The islander’s phones are provided by production, who could also drop in from time to time when someone is about to receive a text. The phones are used to take pictures, but they are not connected to the internet and the time and date is fake, proving that this might all be some messed up science experiment. Previous seasons of Love Island UK have allowed islanders to text each other, but never to the outside world. They also can’t listen to music, read, or watch TV shows. So they have nothing to do but cause distress amongst each other in the hot summer sun!

There is an alcohol limit

Islanders are limited to one glass of alcohol a night, and it’s “not a generous pour.” On occasion, champagne is provided on dates to inspire romance and/or more drama.

The islanders are split up for lunch and dinner

In order to make sure there is no gossiping (or scheming) amongst the couples, the girls and guys are separated for lunch and dinner. They are on their own for breakfast, which seems to mostly always consist of avocado toast or eggs, until they are thrown on the ground by angry islanders.

They can’t talk about the outside world

In order to keep the drama to the forefront, islanders are not supposed to talk about things in the outside world. Former islander Indiyah Polack from 2022 revealed, “I would say the most broken rule was speaking about the outside world because we weren’t allowed to do that. But when you’re coming into that environment all you know is the outside world – what else do you talk about? I got in a lot of trouble for that as I’m quite a chatty Kathy.”

They have to be debriefed before returning to the real world

Since the islanders are in there with no access to the outside, they have no idea how they are being perceived by viewers, which could be jarring when they exit. Before they leave for good, contestants are debriefed by producers who help brace for the public eye, in addition to meeting with a therapist for a minimum of eight sessions.

They get one “off” day a week

The islanders do get one day off from stirring up drama! They get one “off” day a week, which consists of them cleaning the villa or sometimes going on day trips. They are closely watched by producers, Truman Show style, to ensure that there is no drama going unfilmed.

Formerly enslaved man’s response to his ‘master’ wanting him back is a literary masterpiece

In 1825, at the approximate age of 8, Jordan Anderson (sometimes spelled “Jordon”) was sold into slavery and would live as a servant of the Anderson family for 39 years. In 1864, the Union Army camped out on the Anderson plantation and he and his wife, Amanda, were liberated. The couple eventually made it safely to Dayton, Ohio, where, in July 1865, Jordan received a letter from his former owner, Colonel P.H. Anderson. The letter kindly asked Jordan to return to work on the plantation because it had fallen into disarray during the war.

On Aug. 7, 1865, Jordan dictated his response through his new boss, Valentine Winters, and it was published in the Cincinnati Commercial. The letter, entitled “Letter from a Freedman to His Old Master,” was not only hilarious, but it showed compassion, defiance, and dignity. That year, the letter would be republished in the New York Daily Tribune and Lydia Marie Child’s “The Freedman’s Book.”

The letter mentions a “Miss Mary” (Col. Anderson’s Wife), “Martha” (Col. Anderson’s daughter), Henry (most likely Col. Anderson’s son), and George Carter (a local carpenter).

Dayton, Ohio,
August 7, 1865
To My Old Master, Colonel P.H. Anderson, Big Spring, Tennessee

Sir: I got your letter, and was glad to find that you had not forgotten Jordon, and that you wanted me to come back and live with you again, promising to do better for me than anybody else can. I have often felt uneasy about you. I thought the Yankees would have hung you long before this, for harboring Rebs they found at your house. I suppose they never heard about your going to Colonel Martin’s to kill the Union soldier that was left by his company in their stable. Although you shot at me twice before I left you, I did not want to hear of your being hurt, and am glad you are still living. It would do me good to go back to the dear old home again, and see Miss Mary and Miss Martha and Allen, Esther, Green, and Lee. Give my love to them all, and tell them I hope we will meet in the better world, if not in this. I would have gone back to see you all when I was working in the Nashville Hospital, but one of the neighbors told me that Henry intended to shoot me if he ever got a chance.

I want to know particularly what the good chance is you propose to give me. I am doing tolerably well here. I get twenty-five dollars a month, with victuals and clothing; have a comfortable home for Mandy, — the folks call her Mrs. Anderson, — and the children — Milly, Jane, and Grundy — go to school and are learning well. The teacher says Grundy has a head for a preacher. They go to Sunday school, and Mandy and me attend church regularly. We are kindly treated. Sometimes we overhear others saying, “Them colored people were slaves” down in Tennessee. The children feel hurt when they hear such remarks; but I tell them it was no disgrace in Tennessee to belong to Colonel Anderson. Many darkeys would have been proud, as I used to be, to call you master. Now if you will write and say what wages you will give me, I will be better able to decide whether it would be to my advantage to move back again.

As to my freedom, which you say I can have, there is nothing to be gained on that score, as I got my free papers in 1864 from the Provost-Marshal-General of the Department of Nashville. Mandy says she would be afraid to go back without some proof that you were disposed to treat us justly and kindly; and we have concluded to test your sincerity by asking you to send us our wages for the time we served you. This will make us forget and forgive old scores, and rely on your justice and friendship in the future. I served you faithfully for thirty-two years, and Mandy twenty years. At twenty-five dollars a month for me, and two dollars a week for Mandy, our earnings would amount to eleven thousand six hundred and eighty dollars. Add to this the interest for the time our wages have been kept back, and deduct what you paid for our clothing, and three doctor’s visits to me, and pulling a tooth for Mandy, and the balance will show what we are in justice entitled to. Please send the money by Adams’s Express, in care of V. Winters, Esq., Dayton, Ohio. If you fail to pay us for faithful labors in the past, we can have little faith in your promises in the future. We trust the good Maker has opened your eyes to the wrongs which you and your fathers have done to me and my fathers, in making us toil for you for generations without recompense. Here I draw my wages every Saturday night; but in Tennessee there was never any pay-day for the negroes any more than for the horses and cows. Surely there will be a day of reckoning for those who defraud the laborer of his hire.

In answering this letter, please state if there would be any safety for my Milly and Jane, who are now grown up, and both good-looking girls. You know how it was with poor Matilda and Catherine. I would rather stay here and starve — and die, if it come to that — than have my girls brought to shame by the violence and wickedness of their young masters. You will also please state if there has been any schools opened for the colored children in your neighborhood. The great desire of my life now is to give my children an education, and have them form virtuous habits.

Say howdy to George Carter, and thank him for taking the pistol from you when you were shooting at me.

From your old servant,
Jordon Anderson

10 things most kids don’t know about their mothers

Pregnant.

There it was, clear as day, two blue lines staring back at me from the small pregnancy test I had just purchased.

I double-checked…

One line = not pregnant.

Two lines = pregnant.

Photo via iStock.

Yup, I was definitely pregnant.

My heart was pounding.

My head was spinning.

My stomach was churning.

I was nervous, excited, scared, and ecstatic all at the same time.

This was actually happening! After years of dreaming, preparing for, and anticipating this day, it was finally here. I was going to be a mother.

Little did I know that in nine short months, I would begin the most exhausting, life-changing, heart-wrenching, but indescribably rewarding journey of my life.

In nine months, I would learn the price of motherhood firsthand. I would know exactly what it takes to be a mother. I would gain a whole new understanding of and gratitude for the beautiful woman I call Mom.

I would learn about things mothers experience that their children often know very little about.

Here are 10 things your mom never told you.

1. You made her cry … a lot.

She cried when she found out she was pregnant. She cried as she gave birth to you. She cried when she first held you. She cried with happiness. She cried with fear. She cried with worry. She cried because she feels so deeply for you. She felt your pain and your happiness and she shared it with you, whether you realized it or not.

2. She wanted that last piece of pie.

But when she saw you look at it with those big eyes and lick your mouth with that tiny tongue, she couldn’t eat it. She knew it would make her much happier to see your little tummy be filled than hers.

3. It hurt.

When you pulled her hair, it hurt; when you grabbed her with those sharp fingernails that were impossible to cut, it hurt; when you bit her while drinking milk, that hurt, too. You bruised her ribs when you kicked her from her belly; you stretched her stomach out for nine months; you made her body contract in agonizing pain as you entered this world.

4. She was always afraid.

From the moment you were conceived, she did all in her power to protect you. She became your mama bear. She was that lady who wanted to say no when the little girl next door asked to hold you and who cringed when she did because in her mind no one could keep you as safe as she herself could. Her heart skipped two beats with your first steps. She stayed up late to make sure you got home safe and woke up early to see you off to school. With every stubbed toe and little stumble, she was close by; she was ready to snatch you up with every bad dream or late-night fever. She was there to make sure you were OK.

She stayed up late to make sure you got home safe and woke up early to see you off to school.

5. She knows she’s not perfect.

She is her own worst critic. She knows all her flaws and sometimes hates herself for them. She is hardest on herself when it comes to you, though. She wanted to be the perfect mom, to do nothing wrong — but because she is human, she made mistakes. She is probably still trying to forgive herself for them. She wishes with her whole heart that she could go back in time and do things differently, but she can’t, so be kind to her and know she did the best she knew how to do.

6. She watched you as you slept.

There were nights when she was up ’til 3 a.m. praying that you would finally fall asleep. She could hardly keep her eyes open as she sang to you, and she would beg you to “please, please fall asleep.” Then, when you finally fell asleep, she would lay you down, and all her tiredness would disappear for a short second as she sat by your bedside looking down at your perfect cherub face, experiencing more love than she knew was possible, despite her worn-out arms and aching eyes.

7. She carried you a lot longer than nine months.

You needed her to. So she did. She would learn to hold you while she cleaned; she would learn to hold you while she ate; she would even hold you while she slept because it was the only way she could sometimes. Her arms would get tired, her back would hurt, but she held you still because you wanted to be close to her. She snuggled you, loved you, kissed you, and played with you. You felt safe in her arms; you were happy in her arms; you knew you were loved in her arms, so she held you, as often and as long as you needed.

Her arms would get tired, her back would hurt, but she held you still because you wanted to be close to her.

8. It broke her heart every time you cried.

There was no sound as sad as your cries or sight as horrible as the tears streaming down your perfect face. She did all in her power to stop you from crying, and when she couldn’t stop your tears, her heart would shatter into a million little pieces.

9. She put you first.

She went without food, without showers, and without sleep. She always put your needs before her own. She would spend all day meeting your needs, and by the end of the day, she would have no energy left for herself. But the next day, she would wake up and do it all over again because you meant that much to her.

10. She would do it all again.

Being a mom is one of the hardest jobs anyone can do, and it will take you to your very limits sometimes. You cry, you hurt, you try, you fail, you work, and you learn. But, you also experience more joy than you thought was possible and feel more love than your heart can contain. Despite all the pain, grief, late nights, and early mornings you put your mom through, she would do it all again for you because you are worth it to her.

So, next time you see her, tell your mom thank you; let her know that you love her. She can never hear it too many times.

Jhené Aiko Fans Apparently Overlooked Her Peaceful Messages, Starting A Brawl At Her Atlanta Show

Jhene Aiko In Concert - Atlanta, GA
Getty Image

Sometimes, it’s easy to assume that a recording artist’s fans are a reflection of that artist. Trap rappers appeal to real-life hustlers, conscious rappers attract the crunchy granola crowd, Taylor Swift fans are VERY dramatic. But sometimes, an artist’s image just doesn’t appear to match the attendance at their shows.

For instance, Jhené Aiko’s show on The Magic Hour Tour is a lot like her performance at Coachella; there’s a lot of breath work, guided meditation, and sound bowls, as Aiko sings her soothing mantras. However, at the tour stop in Atlanta, fans apparently overlooked all that, opting to settle their problems the old-fashioned way: with a brawl in the lobby.

Now, getting dressed up in your finest just to stomp somebody out is crazy enough, but doing so after Jhené Aiko sings about healing from trauma and teaches the crowd semi-advanced yoga is wildly incongruous behavior for the circumstances, as pretty much everybody on Twitter pointed out:

However, as others noted, it might not have been as inconsistent with Aiko’s music as it seems. After all, the Los Angeles-born singer is equally as likely to shout, “Slauson, hoe!” on her records or break out into spontaneous bursts of C-walking. So yeah… maybe they got a little too turnt to “Post To Be” and returned to the pre-work personality.

The Magic Hour Tour takes a two-week break after this, then picks back up on August 1 in Phoenix, so maybe everyone can use this time to realign their chakras.

Selena Gomez Was (Finally!) Nominated For Her First Acting Emmy For ‘Only Murders In The Building’

selena gomez
hulu

Selena Gomez has won or been nominated for enough awards that her career accomplishments has its own Wikipedia page. But curiously, despite going toe-to-toe with comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short, she has never received an acting nomination for her performance on Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building — until today.

Gomez is up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2024 Emmys, alongside Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Maya Rudolph (Loot), Jean Smart (Hacks), and Kristen Wiig (Palm Royale). That’s a category full of heavy hitters, but maybe it’s The Year of Selena Gomez. She won Best Actress at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival for starring in Emilia Pérez, which also won the Jury Prize. Could an Emmy be next?

Gomez talked about working with the Martins in an interview with The Wrap. “I am nowhere near as cool as Steve Martin and Martin Short. I think, for me, I’m a newbie, I’m a baby,” she said. “Still. I’m doing what I am doing as best as I can. But these are icons and I don’t feel like they were that intimidated. The only thing they ever said to me was, ‘We thought you were going to be annoying and high-maintenance.’ So I guess that means I’m not those things if they like working with me.

Only Murders In The Building is also up for Outstanding Comedy Series and Best Actor (both Martins). You can see the full list of nominations here. The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards air on September 15, 2024.
