Gen Z, Gen X and millennials share their ‘boomer’ complaints, proving old folks can be right

Baby boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964) have been taking a lot of heat over the past few years from younger generations who think that their me-first mentality helped create a world where the climate is getting warmer, the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer and people born in the ‘40s and ‘50s still rule the modern workplace.

Boomers are also super frustrating because many can’t figure out modern technology, and the younger folks have to explain it until they are blue in the face.

Of course, these are all generational stereotypes that many baby boomers would reject. But they will probably stand up and cheer when they read a list of tweets inspired by X user @FvreignLL, who asked, “What is the most boomer complaint you have?” The post was embraced by younger people and received over 123 million views.

Even though boomers are in the hot seat these days, just about everyone can agree that they’re right about many things that get under younger people’s skin, too. One of the recurring themes of the post was that people can’t stand the fact that we are overly dependent on technology, and often, instead of making things more accessible, it makes them more frustrating.

Here are 15 of the best ‘boomer complaints’ that younger people have, too.

People had a lot of thoughts on the state of customer service in 2024.

They also can’t stand the idea that technology has complicated things unnecessarily.

Technology has also made people super annoying. What’s the point in paying $13 for a movie and scrolling through your phone in the theater the whole time?

We’ve also created a world that isn’t exactly kid-friendly.

And, what happened to adults?

Whatever happened to paying for something once and then owning it? Or being able to own physical media so that you don’t have to pay every time you watch your favorite movie?

Also, when did we all decide that almost every chip has to be kettle-cooked and made for people with cobalt teeth? Enjoying a snack shouldn’t result in a $5,000 dental bill.

Remember when coffee was a quarter? Boomers do. These days, it’s common to spend $6 or $7 on a cup of Joe.

Most importantly, young people also have a real problem with you standing on their finely manicured lawn.

This rundown shouldn’t just lead one to believe that boomers are the cranky generation. When their time comes, Gen Xers, millennials and Gen Z will be right behind them, complaining about “kids these days” and why things were so much better “in my day.” But hopefully, they’ll be a bit better at using technology.

What’s accepted now but will be embarrassing in the future? Our readers shared 21 things.

We can all be sure that as society evolves, many things that seem normal today will be cringeworthy to people in the future, whether it’s our fashion, politics, civility, or how we treat the environment.

If we look back just 30 years ago, same-sex marriage was illegal, people routinely smoked in bars and restaurants and it was fashionable to wear platform sneakers.

So, when we look back on the world of 2024, there are bound to be many things that we’ll be embarrassed about in 30 years, especially when we are forced to live with the repercussions of the decisions we make today. On a lighter note, we’ll all also have clouds full of photos of ourselves wearing hairstyles and clothes that look utterly ridiculous in hindsight.

We asked the Upworthy community to share their thoughts by asking a big question on Facebook: “What’s something that’s accepted now that we’ll be embarrassed about in the future?” Our readers responded with funny takes on current fashion and concerns about technology use and how we treat our fellow human beings.

Here are 21 things we accept today that we’ll probably be embarrassed about in the future.

More than a few current fashion trends will look silly in the coming years.

“Yoga pants. I love them to death, but I can easily see them as the parachute pants of tomorrow.” — Deborah

“Barn doors in your house.” — Joyce

“Tattoos all over the body.” — Vicki

“People wearing socks and sandals.” — Jeremy

“Wearing pajamas in public.” — Ivy

“Huge, over-sized false eyelashes.” — Patricia

Hopefully, people in the future will be more considerate when using technology than we are today.

“Walking around with your eyes locked on your phone. Or eating at a table with 4 people looking at their phone. One day, we will either fall off a cliff or realize life is what is happening off the screen.” — Elise.

“Texting in the presence of another person.” — Kate

We can also hope that in the near future, we will be able to solve many of today’s pressing public policy issues so that the next generation will live happier and healthier lives.

“Lack of healthcare for everyone.” — Sharon

“Making the planet unlivable for human beings.” — Karen

“Spending hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer’s money to build a sports arena for a billionaire. Then charging the taxpayers outrageous amounts to attend events there.” — Stacy

“How the US is systematically clawing back women’s rights to decide what they do with their bodies. It’s beyond shameful.” — Jason.

“Allowing guns everywhere.” — Amy

“That we drive fossil fuel-powered vehicles.” — Heidi

Some people are concerned about the way students and their parents behave in modern-day America.

“Parents trying to run schools: yelling at teachers for their child’s poor performance, yelling at principals when their child gets in trouble, book banning based on an individual’s religious ideologies, etc.” — Beth.

“Entitled children talking back to their parents and teachers.” — Connie

“Cry rooms at universities where students can go and work out their anxiety and cry and be upset if their professor uses words that are too difficult for them. Universities are institutes of higher learning, not institutes of babysitting. That will be an embarrassment in the future, as it is an embarrassment to me and many others now.” — Della

In 30 years, we may be embarrassed to look back on the level of general civility in 2024.

“Panic buying of toilet paper during the pandemic.” — Tony

“Ageism. It’s everywhere, all the time, and no one seems to mind. No one is defined by the amount of time they’ve spent on the planet but it’s used as an identity and as a weapon (ask any teenager, 40-year-old woman, or retiree…). I can only hope that one day it will be a source of embarrassment that we were all so dismissive and judgmental.” — Rosy.

“Human beings living on the street.” — Andrea

“Torturous killing of animals for food.” — Mae

While this list may seem like a litany of complaints people have about living in the modern world, it should give people hope. If we’ve overcome past embarrassments, today’s can be fixed as well.

Oasis Photo Session At Wembley

Oasis is definitely not getting back together. Brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher frequently remind the general public of the bad blood between them, and Noel Gallagher recently requested for Dave Grohl to “wind his f*cking neck in about Oasis.” So, an Oasis reunion is unlikely, at best, but that isn’t stopping fans from celebrating their past. August will mark 30 years since Oasis’ Definitely Maybe album, which will be commemorated with Definitely Maybe (30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition).

A24 and IMAX will also provide a dose of nostalgia by screening Oasis: Supersonic for one night only on Tuesday, July 16, at more than 300 IMAX locations across the country, as per press release.

“As a part of A24’s continued partnership with IMAX through our exclusive monthly screening series, we’re excited to be bringing fans never-before-seen footage featuring exclusive interviews with Noel and Liam Gallagher during their rise to fame,” the press release additionally relayed. “With the help of IMAX’s larger-than-life sound and picture, this infamous musical documentary will transport you right backstage with the band.”

How To Buy Tickets To A24’s Oasis: Supersonic IMAX Screening

Tickets are available for purchase now here. You can enter your location to find the nearest IMAX theatre. According to Fandango, tickets begin at $19.08 for adults, $17.45 for seniors, and $15.81 for children.

The Killers Perfectly Synced Up The End Of England’s Win Over The Netherlands With The Start Of ‘Mr. Brightside’ In London

England are heading to the final of the European Championship. Thanks to a converted penalty by Harry Kane and a late goal by Ollie Watkins, the Three Lions were able to beat The Netherlands in Dortmund, 2-1, to secure a spot in Sunday’s final against Spain. It marks the second Euros in a row where the men’s side have made it to the final — back in 2021, England lost in penalties to Italy.

This team, however, looks like it has learned from all the times it has come up short under its current manager, Gareth Southgate, and while Spain has been arguably the best team at the tournament, there’s optimism throughout England that this time will be different. And on Wednesday in London, The Killers decided to get in on the fun, as they had a show in London at the O2 that started during the game. And right before they started to play perhaps their most popular song, they decided to throw the end of the game on the screen, which led to the wonderful moment where this happened:

In general, the U.K. absolutely loves “Mr. Brightside,” so kudos to The Killers for what will probably go down as an all-time unforgettable moment for everyone who went to the show. Unfortunately, it does not appear that they really leaned into the bit and sang “Football’s Coming Home,” but maybe they can learn that between Wednesday night and before the final kicks off on Sunday … as long as Drake does not bet on England, of course.

Even Siri Has Apparently Taken Sides In The Drake-Kendrick Lamar Beef, Refusing To Play Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’

The American public is more invested in the ongoing Drake-Kendrick Lamar beef than the upcoming presidential election. Unlike the upcoming presidential election, however, the Drake-Kendrick beef has a clear winner. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” ostensibly ended it, but the “Not Like Us” victory lap is relentless.

Now, even Siri has chosen a side — emphasizing the certified loser of this rap rapture.

HipHopDX’s Jeremy Hecht recorded himself asking Siri to play Drake’s Certified Lover Boy on Spotify, and instead, Kendrick Lamar whispers, “Psst, I see dead people,” which is the intro to “Not Like Us.”

As is my journalistic duty, I also asked Siri to play Certified Lover Boy, Drake’s September 2021 album, on Spotify, and Siri played “Not Like Us.” However, the second time I tried it, Siri did play Certified Lover Boy, so it would appear that Siri’s pettiness is limited to one attempt — or Spotify corrected the glitch. Hilarious, nonetheless.

Last week, Lamar released the star-studded, jam-packed video for his No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit. Among the many people making a cameo was former Toronto Raptor and Drake confidante DeMar DeRozan, who later clarified his loyalties.

“I mean, love Drake, love Drake, you always could play him,” DeRozan told Fox 40’s Sean Cunningham in response to whether Drake songs can be played during his games with the Sacramento Kings, his new team. “Kendrick’s been a friend of mine — family, damn near family for a long time, for a while. We from the same city, grew up damn near in the same neighborhood. So, it’s always been there. It hasn’t always been publicized, but that’s basically family.”

‘The Diplomat’ Season 2: Everything To Know So Far About The Return Of Keri Russell’s Twisty Thriller (Update For July 2024)

The Diplomat Keri Russell
Netflix

Long after the days when Keri Russell’s haircut changed Felicity‘s trajectory, the lead actress of FX’s The Americans remains a magnetic and reliable TV presence who can nab streaming clicks with the best of them. In The Diplomat, Russell once again finds herself (as Kate Wyler) not only in a complicated job but a heavily-featured marriage, and although her newest series does contain some adrenaline-fueled moments, a large focus rests on the messiest relationship of the thriller/dramedy show.

The Diplomat launched in April 2023 as an instant Netflix hit, and viewers soon began asking for a second season with Netflix making the rare call of a swift renewal. Not only does that mean more onscreen Russell — which she celebrates, and she recently told Dinner’s On Me podcast host Jesse Tyler Ferguson that she is “super thankful to have a job right now because so many of my friends do not” — but we will also not be left hanging by that explosive cliffhanger season finale. Let’s talk about what has been revealed thus far.

Plot

The most pressing question of the season finale is whether Kate Wyler’s husband, fellow diplomat Hal (Rufus Sewell) — who has a very different style, both personally and professionally, from Kate — might have been pushed out of this mortal coil. Sure, other characters could have lost their lives in that explosion, too, but whether Hal lives or dies is integral to the tone of The Diplomat because theirs is such a miserable marriage, which realistically will not end unless Hal does die. Vanity Fair actually explored that issue with one of the show’s consultants, ex-CIA official Kari Amelung, who reveals that married diplomats will delay splits because a divorce filing will cause them “to forfeit coveted overseas assignments to return to the States.” So, they will “just live in hatred [with each other],” which does speak to this show’s layers.

As viewers will recall, the season ended with the revelation that Rory Kinnear’s British PM Nicola Trowbridge had been the culprit of the attack on a British aircraft carrier. Not only that, but that second explosion throws not only Kate’s professional but also her personal life into disarray, and show creator Debora Cohn called this fully intentional to Tudum: “I wanted to bring together all of the different dynamics of the political relationships and the personal relationships in one event that splits apart all at the same time.”

Sewell might have also provided a clue on Hal’s fate by expressing hopes for a long-lived series: “All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed … I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons].” Hmm. Russell, for her part, told Deadline that Cohn is “such a pro. She knows what she’s doing. I’m assuming she had that plan for a while, but I was completely surprised.”

Beyond that resolution about the second explosion, there will be a key shake-up in dynamics because Vice President Grace Penn will soon be seen rather than merely spoken of. Penn will be portrayed by Allison Janney, and Russell did tell Dinner’s On Me that she was nervous about her new colleague:

“I thought, ‘Oh God, well… she’s so good and also she’s so tall and I’m such a shrimp and I’ll look stupid and I won’t look smart and blah, blah.’ I mean like it’s bizarre what your stupid brain does. And we had really heavy dialogue scenes together and I thought, Oh, it’s not going to work and I’m going to look bad. And, and I went into the makeup trailer in the morning, Janney’s there and we meet each other quickly and she nice as can be, tall, like statuesque, quiet and slumping in her chair, how tall girls do. And I went and just in one second I went, ‘She’s just like us.’”

You can’t really blame Russell for feeling that way. Surely, she has seen I, Tonya, but Janney’s presence should loom large throughout the second season, and hopefully, more concrete plot details will surface soon.

Cast

Obviously, Keri Russell will return as Kate Wyler, and Allison Janney will visually surface as Vice President Grace Penn. Given the nature of the season finale’s final scenes, we have no way of knowing whether Hal Wyler has survived, now has there been confirmation that the Netflix series will being back Rory Kinnear as Prime Minister Trowbridge, David Gyasi as Austin Dennison, or Ali Ahn as Eidra Graham.

Release Date

The Diplomat is slated to return before 2024 ends.

Trailer

Until Netflix drops a trailer, it’s never a bad time to revisit The Americans, which is streaming in full on Hulu.

Report: US Soccer Fired Gregg Berhalter After The USMNT Crashed And Burned At Copa America

The United States men’s national team will have a new manager leading them into the 2026 World Cup on home soil. According to Doug McIntyre of Fox Sports, U.S. Soccer made the decision to sack manager Gregg Berhalter just over one year after it announced that he would come back to lead the team following the expiration of his contract and a lengthy search for his replacement.

The decision was made after the USMNT flamed out of the group stage at Copa America, which was widely viewed as an opportunity to show that the team took a step forward following its elimination in the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Back then, Berhalter led the team through a tricky group before falling to European power The Netherlands.

This time around, the Americans fumbled their final opportunity to make any sort of major statement in a competitive international tournament ahead of 2026. The team started off group play with a 2-0 win against Bolivia that was defined by their inability to finish off chances and run up the score, before a shambolic game against Panama in which standout winger Timothy Weah received an inexplicable red card 18 minutes in. While Folarin Balogun was able to put them ahead despite being a man down not long after, the U.S. almost immediately conceded, then spent the entire second half letting Panama have the ball before José Fajardo scored with about 10 minutes left in the game.

It put the team in a situation where they needed to beat South American juggernaut Uruguay, one of the favorites to win the entire tournament, and hope Panama did not obliterate Bolivia if they were to go through to the knockout stage. Try as they might, the Americans could not break down the resilient Uruguayan defense, and thanks to a controversial goal on a free kick, Uruguay was able to secure a 1-0 win that sent the United States home.

The calls for Berhalter’s job began almost immediately. Whether it was the Fox Sports panel after the game, USMNT fans on Twitter who have been skeptical of Berhalter since the convoluted process that led to his initial hiring in 2018, or those in attendance in Kansas City who chanted “Fire Berhalter,” American fans wanted someone to take responsibility for this, and because you can’t trade out the players from the so-called “golden generation” who have struggled to live up to that reputation once they step outside of North American competition, the obvious choice was the manager whose stated goal from day one has been to change the way the world views American soccer.

In a way, that has happened during the Berhalter era, but not in the way he imagined. For years, the USMNT has been defined by a willingness to play as a collective, to run through a brick wall if it meant being the first player to get to the ball, in running fast and trying hard and white knuckling it against more talented teams that hammer you, but finding a way through sheer determination to get the goal(s) that you need to gut out a result. It’s not the most aesthetically pleasing style of play in the world, and at some point their luck would run out and they’d get blitzed by Argentina or Belgium or someone, but you knew when the United States stepped onto the pitch, the other team was going to have to earn a result after 90 absolutely miserable minutes of being dragged into the mud.

Berhalter wanted the team to take a more progressive, front foot approach that resembles some of the top club teams in the world. He spoke frequently about the team’s system, which was designed to create chances by having players do their jobs, and if they managed to piece everything together within said system, opportunities to score goals would come. The games where this worked looked beautiful, but too often, the team would line up against top teams and come up short, and the benchmark for an international team — how you perform in major tournaments — looked pretty similar to how it’s always looked once the team got outside of CONCACAF if you just looked at the results. Much was made about the lack of a signature win against a team other than the least talented Mexico team in decades during Berhalter’s tenure.

There must, of course, be responsibility put on the players, and the necessary criticism that comes from, well, everything. The golden generation moniker has been thrown around for years, and while most of the players who make up said golden generation have yet to enter their primes, it’s nevertheless a collection of talented individuals who have spent years playing alongside one another in both the youth and senior national team set-ups. And yet, when the games kick off, the chemistry that you’d presume was built up for years over years never seems to be there.

The question is whether that is the fault of the players, the fault of Berhalter, the fault of their clubs, the fault of U.S. Soccer as an institution, the fault of the fans or the pundit class or god knows whomever else. Maybe it’s everyone and everything, all formed into one disgusting blob of hope and aspiration that ran into the harsh reality that men’s soccer in this country is not — and never will be, based on our current trajectory — as good as we’d like. Or maybe it was just because Gregg Berhalter wasn’t a good enough manager for a national team. At the very least, we’ll figure out if that was the singular thing holding the USMNT back. And if more went into it, well, maybe U.S. Soccer will spend the next two years before anything and everything it does gets put under the most intense microscope in the sport trying to fix those problems, too.

Even Eminem Has The ‘Hawk Tuah’ Girl On His Radar, As He Referenced To Promote His Upcoming Album

eminem death of slim shady
Twitter

You know a meme has reached peak saturation when even the notoriously techno-phobic Eminem is referencing it to promote his new albums. The “Hawk Tuah” girl, Hailey Welch, has been all over the place since her memorable street interview went viral on TikTok (including concerts with Zach Bryan and Shaquille O’Neal), and now, her catchphrase is part of the rollout for Eminem’s new album, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce).

Em quoted the spitting onomatopoeia in the caption of a video featuring the grave of “beloved antagonist” Slim Shady (who apparently died at the ripe old age of 27). A passerby spits on the tombstone, which bears a familiar quote from the chorus of “Without Me,” then walks away… missing a hand bursting up out of the ground, suggesting that rumors of Mr. Shady’s demise might have been greatly exaggerated.

Em’s spent much of the rollout for the album poking fun at his alter ego, from making him the anachronistic butt of the joke in his “Houdini” video to putting him to the chainsaw in the video for “Tobey” to zipping him into a body bag on the album’s cover. Whether all this means Eminem’s truly retiring the rap persona — or just trolling all of his haters yet again — remains to be seen.

The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) is due 7/12 via Shady Records/Aftermath/Interscope. You can find more info here.
