Dave Grohl Really Wants To Be On His Daughter Violet’s Shoegaze Album

Dave Grohl’s daughter Violet has proven on a few occasions that she got her father’s musical genes; She has shown off her superlative vocal abilities during multiple performances with her father over the past few years. Now it looks like she may be interested in making an album, and if that’s the case, her dad would love to be on it.

In a recent interview with Sunday Times Culture (as NME notes), Grohl said, “I did ask her the other day, ‘If you were to make a record, how do you imagine it would sound?’ And she said, ‘You know, I think somewhere within that shoegaze thing. Oh, and Dad, I need to get this new guitar pedal. It’s called Loveless, and I want my guitar to sound like My Bloody Valentine.’ I was, like, ‘Yes. Yesss!’ [My] next reaction was, ‘Can I be on your record, please?’”

Grohl went on to praise Violet’s musical taste and abilities while also admitting that being his daughter might not be the best thing for her potential music career, saying:

“She’s 14 and already in a deep Bowie phase. I’m not talking about Eighties Bowie or Nineties Bowie — she hasn’t even got to Berlin. All she does is listen to live bootlegs of the Station To Station tour. Or I’ll hear Cocteau Twins coming out of her bedroom. And the Passions. Remember them? ‘I’m In Love With A German Film Star.’ She was born with perfect pitch and a soulful voice and a musical memory that is photographic. She has all the tools she needs. She writes, I see her notebooks and the lyrics she’s written. Part of the thing about becoming a musician is the drive that gives you the desire to do it. In that sense, I may be her biggest handicap. Like, she’s got to be my f*cking daughter? So I try to stay away.”

MF DOOM Was Apparently Really Close To Finishing A ‘Madvillainy’ Sequel

The way it often goes when a musician dies is that their estate usually comes across some music they had finished but not released and shares some of it with the world. Whether or not that proves to be the case for MF DOOM, it at least looks like the rapper had some unreleased music in a finished state. Not only that, but those songs are part of a planned sequel to a classic DOOM project.

Peanut Butter Wolf, the founder of Stones Throw Records, joined Pete Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds on their Juan Ep Is Dead podcast, and he spoke about a sequel to DOOM and Madlib’s Madvillain album Madvillainy, revealing that it was nearly done. Wolf said, “DOOM was always telling me, ‘It’s 85 percent done, it’s 85 percent done.’ That was the magic number.”

He also admitted that he was growing impatient waiting for the project to get done, saying, “I got a little frustrated, and I was just like, you know, ‘It’s gonna happen when it’s gonna happen.’ I don’t wanna be the guy to force creativity or anything.” He went on to say that he has the permission of DOOM’s team and family to release the completed material, but said, “I don’t know what we’re going to do with those tracks.”

Henry Winkler Underscores The Sad Reality Of Hollywood Friendships

Henry Winkler, the Tom Hanks of television and one of the most beloved men in the industry (despite his apparent feud with Hanks), has been in Hollywood for a very long time. He starred in Happy Days, after all, over 46 years ago, and in the intervening years, Winkler has been featured in numerous television shows and movies, and he’s worked with hundreds of people in the industry.

One might think, then, that Henry Winkler is friends with half the people in Hollywood, especially given his reputation as one of the nicest guys on the planet. That’s not exactly so, however, as Winkler explained to Michael Rosenbaum in an episode of his Inside of You podcast. Winkler explained that, in Hollywood, most friendships are based on “need.” For example, he spoke of two unnamed executives — one the head of a studio, and the other the head of a massive agency — who were inseparable best friends, but as soon as the industry changed, their relationship fell apart. “Their friendship was as best as their need was, and as soon as the need was over,” so was their friendship. “A genuine friendship in this industry is based on a need, a need of each other. It’s a reality.”

There are exceptions, Henry Winkler continued. Some people he has remained good friends with outside of that need. He explained that he does have a number of “friends for life” that aren’t entirely dependent on need. He cites Ron Howard, Adam Sandler, Jason Bateman, and Marion Ross. He also hopes that his Barry co-star, Bill Hader, will fall into that category after Barry is over.

Winkler, in fact, speaks glowingly of Hader. “I have great talks with Bill. I do great work with Bill. He guides me. He writes for me … he’s so complex. He’s such a great creator. And goofy, and he seems like such a wonderful Dad. I’m crazy about him.”

Unrelated, but Winkler also says that he often sends hand-written letters to people whose work he admires, and he cited, most recently, Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell for their work in Fosse/Verdon. That dovetailed into a story about Winkler meeting Christopher Walken for the first time when Walken was a professional dancer and Winkler was working as an usher at the Yale Repertory theater. That is to say, it’s a fascinating interview for anyone who is interested in Henry Winkler.

Sad Ben Roethlisberger Became NFL Fans’ New Favorite Meme After The Steelers Lost To The Browns

The Cleveland Browns (yes, those ones) won an NFL playoff game on Sunday night, beating the rival Pittsburgh Steelers in a stunning performance that saw Cleveland take a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and hold on for a 48-37 win to earn a date with Kansas City in the Divisional round.

It was an unbelievable performance, one that Browns fans will savor for ages. For the Steelers, it may mark the end of an era as Ben Roethlisberger, who has one more year left on his deal at a preposterous cap number, had one of the strangest stat lines in NFL history, throwing for 501 yards on 68 attempts with four touchdowns but also four interceptions that helped the Browns create the gap Pittsburgh could never recover from.

After the loss, as the Browns celebration began on the field, Roethlisberger sat, dejected on the bench as he contemplated the game that was and, possibly, the potential that this was the last game of his career.

That shot of Ben — with a later closeup of him tearing up — naturally became a meme as the internet ran with it immediately with glee in their hearts to see one of the NFL’s villains down bad. There was, of course, a “Hello, darkness, my old friend,” dub, which is a classic that never fails to hit its mark.

We also got the Big Ben x Curb Your Enthusiasm theme mashup that is likewise a fan favorite all the time.

We also had the excellent side by side of Ben staring off into the distance next to Pablo Escobar from Narcos.

JuJu Smith-Schuster, whose “they’re still the same Browns team” became a rallying cry for Cleveland, also caught some strays as the zoom in on sad Big Ben got dubbed over with “Corvette, Corvette,” which is Smith-Schuster’s go-to song for TikTok.

Meanwhile in the Browns locker room, they likewise had some fun with JuJu, dancing to “Corvette, Corvette” as they celebrated their first playoff win since 1995.

Keri Hilson Questioned Twitter Banning Trump And Fans Were Appalled

Like many of us, Keri Hilson is suddenly worried about the boundaries and practices of democracy. But, instead of focusing that worry on how a group of violent, armed insurrectionists gleefully sporting white supremacist symbols forced their way into the capitol building in an attempt to stop the certification of the presidential election, she’s instead directed her attention to Twitter’s decision to ban President Trump. The social media platform has been under pressure to halt the president’s of misinformation, and now, incitement of violence and treason, for quite some time now. After the assault on the capitol on Wednesday, they finally did permanently ban him.

“This may be funny, but it’s a little dangerous too,” she wrote over a screenshot of Trump’s deactivated account in a now deleted Instagram story. “Take Trump out of it for a moment… a democracy must include freedom of speech. Imagine other leaders or popular figures not being able to voice their opinion if it opposes the majority of world leaders…Our freedom of speech being taken from us, slowly but surely (censorship). If the leader of the “free world” can be removed. Imagine that same right of civilians. Imagine believing every time you read “false information detected” and propoganda [sic]. Deceptive reports. And flat out lies being the only thing we see.”

Well, actually, freedom of speech does not and has never covered speech that leads to the potential death of other human beings. That’s why the infamous example of yelling “fire!” in a movie theater always stands as an example of what is not covered. Additionally, the warnings that Twitter was posting on Trump’s tweets were to help stop the propaganda, deceptive reports, and flat out lies he was telling. Hilson deleted the post, let’s hope she gets some perspective on the whole situation soon. Check out some fan reactions below.

Bartenders Tell Us Their Favorite Belgian (And Belgian-Inspired) Beers

Belgium is well known as the birthplace of Jean-Claude Van Damme, the nation where french fries were perfected, and the setting for the (once-under-now-properly-rated) dark comedy, In Bruges. It’s also home to some of the best beer in the world. Brands like Rodenbach, Westmalle, St. Bernardus, and La Chouffe are all famous worldwide, thanks to their quality and taste.

Belgian beer is so popular, in fact, that it’s spawned Belgian-style beer from breweries well beyond its borders. Especially here in the United States.

To help you pick a few Belgian and Belgian-inspired beers to try this month, we reached out to a handful of our favorite bartenders. They served up a mix of American craft choices as well as classic Belgian brews. Check their picks out below!

Frambois Raspberry Lambic

Brouwerij Lindemans

Demetrëa Dewald, lead bartender at Bar Mateo at Zinc Cafe in Los Angeles

Brouwerij Lindemans Raspberry Lambic is a classically perfect Belgium beer. The bottle looks like a classic holiday but the taste is what makes this fruity gem stand out. Bright raspberry flavors without being too sweet, with a tangy afternote, and sparkling fizzy texture make every sip a party in your mouth.

It’s also a great introductory Lambic-style beer for those wanting to expand their palates.

St. Bernardus Abt 12

St. Bernardus

Sarah Kemp, beertender at Living The Dream Brewing in Littleton, Colorado

St. Bernardus Abt 12 from, you guessed it, St. Bernardus, is truly craft beer at its finest. This dark quadruple is the essence of Belgium and a work of art — utilizing their own strain of yeast since 1946. With an ABV of 10%, this delicious Belgian brew is sure to keep you warm all winter long.

Wynwood Father Francisco

Wynwood

Hayden Miller, head bartender at Bodega Taqueria y Tequila in Miami

Wynwood Brewery — Father Francisco. Never has there been a more crushable (nearly) 10% beer that you can even drink in the heat. Hints of banana and clove at the end, but oh so good across the palate.

Goose Island Matilda

Goose Island

Alex Tack, bartender at Rex 1516 in Philadelphia

My favorite American interpretation of the Belgian style is probably Goose Island’s Matilda. Its beauty lies in its balance. It’s a nice combination of dry and malty, and its baking spice notes aren’t cloying or artificial tasting. Instead, they sort of meld into the yeasty aspects, in the same way, a lot of authentic Belgian ales do.

This beer also clocks in at a perfect 7% abv, so it packs a kick without making it a reckless hazard to enjoy more than one or two.

Delirium Noel

Delirium

Andy Printy, beverage director at Chao Baan in St. Louis

Delirium’s Noel, which only releases from late December-early January, is my favorite dark Belgian this season. Perfect for the holidays with a profile of fruitcake, currant, and vanilla. Full-bodied, but drinks incredibly light. If not for the 10% ABV, several could be had…and still may be.

Deschutes Jubelale

Deschutes

Justin Moses, wine director at Sand Valley in Nekoosa, Wisconsin

It’s a bit hard to find, but I can’t recommend the seasonal specialty, Jubelale, from Deschutes Brewery enough. Fig, chocolate, toffee, and mulling spices will warm you up during the holiday season and straight through winter (as will the 6.7% ABV).

Rochefort 10 Trappist Ale

Rochefort

Cari Hah, formerly bar manager at Alcove Café in Los Angeles

My pick is Rochefort 10 Trappist Ale. For winter I always want a strong dark beer to sip out of a goblet. This beer is complex and full force with notes of plum, raisin and malt. Very robust in flavor and aroma.

Duchesse de Bourgogne

Brouwerij Verhaeghe

Gavin Humes, bartender at Scratch|Bar & Kitchen in Encino, California

Depending on what you’re looking for exactly, the Duchesse de Bourgogne definitely fits the bill. It’s a sour ale, so it’s got that tart, delicious, almost sour cherry quality, but it’s complex and delicious. Great for drinking around the fire or before dinner.

Cliff Top Bock

Cliff Top

Zachary Sjodin, bartender at Coastal County Brewing Company in Pensacola, Florida

Cliff Top Brewing makes a really good dunkel bock. It’s got a toasty, malty flavor that’s perfect for cold weather. Pour yourself a pint and sip on it while you wait for winter to end.

Unibroue La Fin du Monde

Unibroue

Brandon “Habi” Habenstein, bartender at The Kitchen & Bar at Bardstown Bourbon Co. in Bardstown, Kentucky

Ah, winter. The time for high gravity beers. The Belgian tripel, a paragon in the beer world. There is no more fitting tripel to drink this year than La Fin du Monde (the end of the world) from Unibroue. It’s the Belgian yeast that makes the style so significant, making it seem like it’s been infused with loads of spices when in actuality it’s classic micro-biological-magic.

Let this 9% classic ease your mind and remember: you’re not the first person to surmise the end of the world and you won’t be the last.

Writer’s Picks:

pFriem Flanders Red

pFriem

Fans of Rodenbach or just sour ales, in general, will love this 7% Flanders red ale. It’s tart, tangy, and filled with hints of sour cherries, rich oak, and subtle, grapey, wine-like flavors perfect for a cold winter’s night.

La Chouffe

La Chouffe

One of the most popular Belgian beers in the world, La Chouffe might be adorned with a whimsical gnome-looking character. But the beer inside is far from a gimmick. It’s 8% ABV and filled with fresh fruit, sweet honey, mild citrus, and subtle hop flavors.

Watch This Supercut Of Failed MAGA Capitol Rioters Getting Arrested Set To ‘Layla’ From ‘Goodfellas’

Last week was a frightening one, with what should have been a dull formality — a joint session of congress counting each state’s Electoral College vote and officially naming Joe Biden the 46th president — was interrupted by a whipped-up crowd of Trump supporters. Their siege on the Capitol ended with five dead but their objectives went unrealized. The FBI are currently rounding up the people who took part, many of whom actually broadcasted their crimes on social media. And just to show that we’re at the part where we can start therapeutically laughing about this, even just a little, someone went and made a supercut of the arrests set to “Layla” from Goodfellas.

Of course, Martin Scorsese’s 1990 gangster classic has many great scenes and sequences, and one of the most iconic is the one that arrives towards the end of the second act. It comes after the famed (and entirely off-screen) Lufthansa heist, when a paranoid Robert De Niro’s Jimmy Conway has many of its participants whacked. Scorsese cranks up the ending to the original Derek and the Dominoes version of “Layla,” which plays as each body is discovered by police.

So you get to see failed MAGA rioters arrested on planes, in airports, at their West Virginia homes. And as each Trumpist is taken away by police, sometimes to the cheers of the public, you hear that plaintive piano, building to a bittersweet conclusion. Of course, the main crook — the one who advertised the gathering on Twitter, the leader who stirred them into action with baseless claims of voter fraud — is still at large.

You can watch the Goodfellas version below.

Even Golf Is Abandoning Donald Trump As The PGA Pulled Its 2022 Championship From His Bedminster Course

On Wednesday, a group of pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol building at the urging of the president in one of the most surreal moments in recent American history. Four rioters and one Capitol police officer died on Wednesday in the deadly raid on the home of the Congress as they tried to delay and disrupt the certification of election results that saw Donald Trump lose handily to Joe Biden.

In the aftermath, the FBI has begun arresting individuals from videos posted inside the Capitol and an investigation is underway into exactly what went down and who was responsible, particularly given the presence of multiple bombs found around the D.C. area including one at the Capitol. While that goes on, private industry has likewise made a swift response to Trump’s incitement of the attempted coup as social media platforms have banned the president and many others en masse, while others move to distance themselves from the soon-to-be former president.

Among the most recent to do so is one that will likely sting Trump significantly — maybe second only to Twitter — as the PGA announced on Sunday night that it would be terminating its contract with Trump’s Bedminster golf course in New Jersey that was scheduled to host the 2022 PGA Championship.

There have been some calls from within the golf world to separate itself from Trump over the past four years, but never moreso than after Wednesday and it appears the PGA heard those calls and chose to move their biggest tournament elsewhere. Given Trump’s love of golf — no president has played more rounds while in office than him — losing the PGA Championship will surely upset him, as did his Doral course losing its WGC event to Mexico a few years ago.

Sean Payton Got Slimed In Jordans After Beating The Bears On Nickelodeon

Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints beat the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon in what was, objectively, the worst game of Wild Card Weekend in terms of entertainment level. The Saints won 21-9, but it was never really that close and for much of the game New Orleans sort of sleepwalked through it with a 7-3 or 14-3 lead, as the Bears offense was simply unable to do anything.

However, the saving grace of the game was the Nickelodeon broadcast, that injected some much needed life into what was otherwise a slog of a game. Nate Burleson was terrific in the booth, offering explanations to the young audience of everything from what it feels like to get tackled to what NFL players do when they have to use the restroom during a game. There was virtual slime and SpongeBob and everything else you’d expect from a Nick NFL broadcast (and an F-bomb you wouldn’t), but for the entirety of it, the only actual slime we saw was in the booth where Burleson threatened to hit Noah Eagle with it but never did and then Cam Jordan was careful not to get got in his postgame interview.

Thankfully, we didn’t have another Duke’s Mayo Bowl situation on our hands where we get tricked into hoping for a sliming only to not get rewarded, as Sean Payton rather gleefully accepted a slime bath in the tunnel after the game — while wearing some Concord 11 lows that had sneaker twitter distressed seeing them get green goo all over them.

Kudos to Payton for accepting this and giving the people what they want, which is to see someone covered in green slime. The Nickelodeon experiment went pretty well and while I wouldn’t expect it to become a regular thing, it might become a Wild Card staple.

12-year-old prodigy Caleb Anderson is already a college sophomore

I am not sure what you were up to at 12 years old, but I can tell you what I wasn’t doing: going to college. The same cannot be said for Caleb Anderson, who recently started his sophomore year at Chattahoochee Technical College in Marietta, GA.

It is no surprise that Caleb is on such a fast track. Before he could even speak he had learned sign language, according to First Coast News. At two years old, he was not only reading, but at a rather high level. As his family recalls, “By nine months old, he was able to sign over 250 words, and by 11 months old, he was speaking and reading.”

By two years old, he was reading far beyond Dr. Seuss. His choice of literature also included the United States Constitution. At the age of three, he was not only learning English, but Spanish, French and even Mandarin. While he qualified for MENSA at age three, he didn’t join until he was five years old, still making him the youngest African-American boy to join, according to his parents.

Caleb flew through elementary, middle and high school. “As we started to interact with other parents, and had other children, then we started to realize how exceptional this experience was, because we had no other frame of reference,” said Caleb’s father, Kobi to First Coast News. Caleb’s mom Claire recalled her son saying: “Mom, I’m bored. This is not challenging. It’s really not helping me grow in my learning, and I think I’m ready for college.” Truth is, when I was 12 years old and bored, I was trying to find enough returnables to cash in so I could go play Space Invaders. Caleb is majoring in aerospace engineering. Hey, at least we both had space in common.

Because of Caleb’s age, his father Kobi has to accompany him on campus. “Yes, going back to college,” he chuckled. However, while most parents are able to assist their 12-year-old children with homework, not often does that include calculous two. “He has far surpassed me in math, so I can’t help him anymore.”

Caleb has two siblings, Aaron and Hannah, who are also also gifted. So one would have to ask how they went about raising such exceptional children. In response Claire gave this advice:

“Raise the child you have, not the child you want.

Fully invest in the skills and talents your child has and remember there are free resources.

Focus on creating a love for learning, not just the learning itself.

The end goal to what you teach them should go back to building character.

Teach them to appreciate the gifts other people have.

As parents, it’s important to remember you are always enough for your children.”

“I think people have a negative perspective when it comes to African-American boys. There are many other Calebs out there. African-American boys like him,” Claire said. “From being a teacher— I really believe that. But they don’t have the opportunity or the resources.”

Caleb is on pace to graduate college at the age of 14, and hopes to continue his education at MIT or Georgia Tech. As for me, I’m going to drink my last Fresca, and add it to the cans I am returning in exchange for a quarter and go find an arcade. Caleb, you can handle aerospace engineering and I will take care of Space Invaders.
