Jamie Spears’ lawyer has continued her round of TV appearances to defend her client’s conservatorship over his daughter, Britney Spears, after documentary by The New York Times threw it into harsh light. According to The Times research in Framing Britney Spears, Britney’s current legal arrangement was made without her own lawyer present, the court appointed a different lawyer without her present and never even let her see the paperwork of the proceedings. Conservatorship lawyer Lisa MacCarley further believes Britney’s situation is not just abusive, but illegal.

However, Jamie’s lawyer, Vivian Thoreen, has now gone on both Good Morning America and CNN to insist her client is completely innocent of any wrongdoing. Thoreen told CNN that Britney’s father would happily step down if he thought his daughter didn’t need a conservator.

“[He] would love nothing more than to see Britney not need a conservatorship,” Thoreen said. “Whether or not there is an end to the conservatorship really depends on Britney. If she wants to end her conservatorship, she can file a petition to end it. Jamie is not suggesting that he is the perfect dad or that he would receive any ‘Father of the Year’ award. Like any parent, he doesn’t always see eye-to-eye on what Britney may want. But Jamie believes every single decision he has made has been in her best interest.”

She also said that during his contesting of the newly appointed co-conservatorship, his goal was to simply make sure he had as much power as the bank who was added to help run Britney’s finances.

“Jamie never contested or objected to Bessemer being appointed as his co-conservator. And at the last hearing, it was reported that Jamie was trying to get more power than his co-conservator, and that is completely inaccurate. What we were arguing is that Jamie and his co-conservator should have equal power, that was always consistent. The court investigator also interviews everyone who is involved in the conservatorship, and they do a deep dive to really study the conservatorship to find out what’s going on. And what I can tell you is every year the court has kept the conservatorship in place.”

Britney was not reached for comment as her lawyer has advised she won’t speak on a pending case. The next hearing related to Britney’s legal situation is scheduled for March 17, 2021.

While Democrats are working to pass a new stimulus bill in Congress this week, conservatives continue making the discourse largely about children’s books and toys. Dr. Seuss dominated coverage on Fox News for the second straight day, with outrage over its publisher’s decision to take six problematic (and largely obscure) books out of print drawing ire from many right-wing pundits and politicians screaming about cancel culture.

One of those is Glenn Beck, who went off about both last week’s Mr. Potato Head controversy and this week’s Dr. Seuss storm, calling the situations around them “the end of freedom in America.” The comments quickly went viral on Twitter, mostly because they’re very absurd but also because it’s pretty wild people are still getting upset about a controversy that isn’t actually much of a controversy.

“They are banning Dr. Seuss books. How much more do you need to see before all of America wakes up and goes ‘this is fascism. this is fascism,” Beck asked. “You don’t destroy books. what is wrong with us, America?”

It’s important to note that, well, Beck is wrong about pretty much everything here. The books aren’t “banned” or being destroyed. Books, especially ones with insensitive messages and imagery, go out of print all the time. So while plenty of people are loudly yelling about censorship and reacting by buying up more obscure Dr. Seuss titles, plenty of other ones are available for sale.

Beck then turned to a very capitolistic demand for his listeners.

“Go out and buy those books today. Find out if you can get them,” he said. “Buy Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. Because it’s the end of an era. It’s the end of freedom in America. Where you are bullied to the point where ‘You better not have that book.’”

The problem with the conservative outrage over the Mr. Potato Head is that it all stems from a poorly-worded tweet from the Associated Press last week. Hasbro isn’t getting rid of Mr. Potato Head but simply putting both Mr. and Mrs. under a general “Potato Head” branding umbrella. The gendered pieces — mustache, handbag, and so on — are still for sale, they’re just rebranding the toys as part of a non-gendered Potato Head universe.

It’s yet another willfully misrepresented controversy taking up oxygen in a room, where, as many have pointed out, even trying to correct them makes it all even more absurd. But at least we have Beck insisting a plastic spud is responsible, finally, for the death of America.

It was just last week that Davido impressed viewers with a breezy appearance on NPR’s Tiny Desk. Now, the afro-fusion star can be found doing the same on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he shared a vibrant medley of two of his songs It began with Davido seated on a gold throne by candles while his band and an array of colorful flowers surrounded him. He only sang the first verse and chorus of “Assurance” before transitioning into “Jowo.”

The latter was one of four tracks Davido performed during his Tiny Desk set. He also played “Gobe,” Aye,” and “Risky,” which were released between 2013 and 2019, making for a good trip through his discography. His Jimmy Kimmel Live! performance also promotes his last two albums, with “Assurance” coming from 2019’s A Good Time and “Jowo” appearing on 2020’s A Better Time. The latter album saw appearances from Nicki Minaj, Tiwa Savage, Lil Baby, Nas, Hit-Boy, Sauti Sol, Mayorkun, and more.

While it may be a while before Davido drops another album, fans will be able to hear him alongside Megan Thee Stallion and Idris Elba on an upcoming song, which the duo revealed during a recent interview on CapitalFM’s The All-New Capital Weekender.

Elizabeth Warren has been busy lately, laying out plans for a tax on the hyper-wealthy and advocating for a $15 dollar minimum wage for the rest of Americans who aren’t in the super-yacht market these days. But she’s also warning that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies may not be the path forward for people who aspire to one day be rich themselves.

On CNBC on Tuesday, the Senator from Massachusetts was asked about Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s recent comments about Bitcoin, which she said could “end badly for some” because it is inherently speculative in nature. And Warren, who sits on the Senate Finance Committee, agreed with that assessment, to say the least.

“I think Janet’s a really smart woman,” Warren said, emphatically, leaving it at that until prompted again to say more. The senator was asked if she felt it was “speculative,” and she then went even further than Yellen, who warned that the market for Bitcoin is highly “speculative.”

“‘Speculative in nature and going to end badly,’” Warren said. “I don’t think Janet left a lot of room for ambiguity.”

Warren was, of course, trying to quote Yellen. And she slightly misquoted her, which was corrected by the anchor doing the interview. But it’s pretty clear that Warren is skeptical of its marketplace and where things are headed. There are a lot of concerns about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies (Warren Buffet has famously proclaimed that he will never invest a penny in them) as they see a relative boom in recent weeks, in part with the rise of other Non Fungible Tokens and speculation on those blockchain-based markets. There’s also the environmental impact of all that energy spent to mine these coins in the first place. But as some see Bitcoin as an obstacle to Warren’s tax plans, she seems intent to tell folks not to sink a bunch of their money into the platform in the first place.

The original Coming to America came out during a very different time. For one thing, back in 1988 it wasn’t too unusual for an R-rated movie to make a dumptruck of money. There were a lot more R movies back then! The cinema of 2021 leans heavily towards PG-13 — not so blue that large demographics can’t watch it, but not too family-friendly either. So when Coming 2 America wound up downgraded to a PG-13, there was some concern. But its director says there’s a good reason for a slightly cleaner sequel.

Craig Brewer — who’s no stranger to R movies, including his last picture with Eddie Murphy, the gleefully dirty Dolemite is My Name — was speaking to The Wall Street Journal (in a bit teased out by The Hollywood Reporter) when the subject of the rating came up. Brewer said it wasn’t like they weren’t allowed to go R had they wanted to.

“If an R-rated movie would work then we would do an R-rated movie,” Brewer explained. “I think we still have a really hilarious movie and we do push the boundaries on a PG-13 movie here and there. If you look at the first movie, other than the gratuitous nudity of the bathers and some swearing, it is actually rather wholesome. It’s got a fairytale feel to it.”

It’s true, the original Coming to America isn’t a terribly hard R, even if two of its most famous bits — the bathers and the trash mouthed cabbie who picks them up at the airport — only work with the more mature rating. If Murphy decides to once again team with the director of Hustle and Flow and Black Snake Moan — two of Brewer’s other, also very R movies — there’s every chance they’ll again go blue.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had some measured good news for the state’s music fans: arts, entertainment, and events venues will be allowed to reopen in April, according to The New York Times. However, there will be limitations, of course, in the interest of public safety. Venues will be capped at 33% capacity, with a maximum of 100 people for indoor and 200 people for outdoor venues. Venues that can administer COVID-19 tests to all attendees can increase that number to 150 people indoors and 500 outdoors. The new rules are set to go into effect on April 2.

However, the Times does note that the limits won’t make it feasible for many venues to open; unless attendees get absolutely loaded, venues likely won’t be able to cover the costs of re-opening, keeping some — or most — effectively closed down until restrictions are lifted further. For instance, Broadway shows won’t be coming back until Labor Day, considering how much cost goes into production — shows that only get 33% attendance generally close within a season. Further complicating the issue is social distancing; many venues would require even lower numbers than that to accommodate six feet of distance between attendees.

But having outdoor shows back could be a good look, especially for indie performers and smaller, lower-production shows. Meanwhile, with something like an average of 65,500 new cases per week and over 517,000 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, it might be better to be safe than sorry. With the vaccine rollout expected to allow more venues to reopen in the fall according to Presidential chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, fans may appreciate waiting just a few more months.

Even though America is barely a month in Joe Biden’s administration, Donald Trump has already started making noise about running for president again in 2024. During his 90 minute speech to close out CPAC, Trump hinted at running again, and he naturally did it by pushing the “Big Lie” that he was the real winner of the 2020 election. “Who knows? I may even decide to beat [the Democrats] for a third time.”

While it’s unclear how serious Trump is about taking another run at the White House or if he’s just drumming up publicity for his next money-making scheme, preparations are reportedly being made behind the scenes to prep for a 2024 campaign. Most notably, those talks include replacing Mike Pence as Trump’s running mate. Via Bloomberg:

Trump’s advisers have discussed identifying a Black or female running mate for his next run, and three of the people familiar with the matter said Pence likely won’t be on the ticket.

Two advisers have suggested Trump consider South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, the people said. Donald Trump Jr. and his girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, are hosting a fundraiser for Noem on Friday at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and home in Palm Beach. The former president is planning to make an appearance, people familiar with the matter said.

Replacing Pence shouldn’t come as a total surprise following the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Just before the insurrection, Trump had worked up the crowd at his “Stop the Steal” rally by accusing Pence of failing to perform his “constitutional duty” by overturning the election results. (Trump had reportedly called Pence a “p*ssy” in an attempt to bully him into not certifying the election.) Moments later, a throng of MAGA supporters violently stormed the Capitol building with nooses and zip ties while Pence and his family were still inside. Needless to say, the two probably aren’t in a rush to work together again.

NBA All-Star is rapidly approaching, as the one-day extravaganza will combine the usual Saturday night competitions with the game itself on Sunday, and the build to this year’s All-Star is, unsurprisingly, muted. Part of that is the lack of a full weekend where the hoops world all descends on one city for a few days, and part of it is the simple fact that the players themselves don’t seem particularly thrilled about having to play a made-for-TV special of a game in an empty arena while otherwise quarantined in an Atlanta hotel.

Despite maybe better judgement, the show is going on and as such, there is a wagering element to all of this. There’s a full card of action available for Sunday’s festivities, from the Skills, Three-Point, and Dunk contests to All-Star MVP odds and some in-game props. We’ll be looking at the offerings from BetOnline in this space and handing out best bets for everything on the board.

Skills Competition: Vucevic (+650), Randle (+800)

Chris Paul and Luka Doncic are, unsurprisingly, the heavy favorites as the two only guards in the Skills Competition, and no one would be surprised by either winning. Of those two, I’d lean Paul if for no other reason than he’s the better three-point shooter and, often, that’s what this comes down to. The other thing the Skills Competition comes down to is effort, and typically the big fellas are a bit more inclined to go all-out because a win means a little more to them. That’s why I’m going to roll with the two best shooting bigs in this year’s competition, who also happen to have the longest odds. If they can get through the passing section, both are capable of knocking down the shot at the end to win.

Three-Point Contest: Booker (+500), Tatum (+750)

Booker has won this contest before (2018), as the only other past champ is Stephen Curry (2015) who, at +190, is the strong favorite and as such I cannot bring myself to bet on him. Booker feels like really good value in the middle of the pack at +500 and I’ll take a flyer on Tatum, because I could see him getting in rhythm and hitting a bunch. Plus at +750, why not? Sadly, there is not an option as good as Joe Harris a year ago at longish odds, but we’ll ride with these two.

Dunk Contest: Cassius Stanley (+200)

Do this now before the smart money comes in on the rookie out of Duke. He had the highest vert in the 2020 Draft and his dunk reel from high school and college is sensational. Few NBA fans know of him because he wasn’t an elite prospect and he hasn’t played for the Pacers, but everyone in the Draft/college hoops world is stunned he’s got the longest odds on the board.

Most Three-Pointers Made By One Player In The All-Star Game: OVER 6.5 (-130)

Boy they really are just stealing money from you with the vig on these All-Star props at toss-ups being -120 each, but I digress. Last year, two guys hit seven or more threes (Kawhi and CP3) and I’ll bank on that happening again in the three-point happy All-Star action.

Most Assists By One Player: UNDER 10.5 (-130)

No one has topped 10 assists in the last two years under the new format where captains pick teams, and I’m going to ride with that trend to continue here.

Most Rebounds By One Player: OVER 11 (-110)

There’s a lot of really good bigs in this game so they might all divvy them up, but I think someone can at least get to 11 for a push and given this is getting better juice than the Under, I’ll take that. Not a big fan of this bet, to be honest, but I said I’d pick everything so Over.

Most Points Scored By One Player: UNDER 32.5 (-120)

It’s kind of weird taking the Over on threes made by one guy and the Under on points, but here we are. Only Giannis in 2018 has put up more than 31 in a game under the new captains format, and with no fans in attendance and no hometown All-Stars, there won’t be one guy getting fed to delight the home crowd.

All-Star Game MVP: Steph (+750), Zion (+1200), Beal (+1600), Chris Paul (+4000)

Alright, so I’m spraying the board here with one semi-favorite, a couple mid-tier guys, and a longshot, with the caveat that you should probably wait to see how rosters shake out to bet MVP odds. I’m worried about minutes for top guys this year, especially, given how many have indicated they aren’t crazy about playing and would like some rest. Still, Steph could go crazy for like 25 minutes, hit the shots to win the game, and walk away with this thing with ease.

On the other end of the spectrum, even knowing that newcomers sometimes don’t get a ton of time, I think Zion’s gonna play a bunch because he’s the young guy (i.e., Ben Simmons led last year’s game in minutes) and everyone on his team is going to look to get some lobs up to him so he might have some of the big “moments” during the game. Beal is getting his first start so I think his minutes go up and he can go crazy scoring as well, so I like his value. Finally, Chris Paul always tries really hard in All-Star games, he’s the one that made this whole thing happen as the president of the NBPA, the HBCU funds being tied to the game was his idea, and he might just hit a ton of threes like last year.

GLOW may be gone from Netflix after Season 4 got axed (and that stinks), but the spirit of that marvelous lady-power series is still in this world, which great, even though Season 3 lost its underdog edge and got a little too soap-operatic. To that effect, Variety reports that Alison Brie will re-team with GLOW creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch for a new Apple TV+ anthology series.

The show will be called Roar and has been drawn as a smattering of feminist fables (that are based upon Cecilia Ahern’s short-story collection) with a darkly comedic edge. An eight-episode season shall be coming, and the cast packs a truly impressive punch. Not only will we get Brie in all her fierceness but also Nicole Kidman (who’s hitting TV hard lately with Big Little Lies and The Undoing), Cynthia Erivo (who’s loving the small screen too with The Outsider and Genius: Arethra), Merritt Wever (of Run and Unbelievable).

Also pretty dang cool: Apple TV+ is continuing to add to its roster of high-quality crowd pleasers like Ted Lasso. Not only that, but Flahive and Mensch is making this new anthology series as part of a much larger deal, and while we can’t possibly hope for a GLOW movie, we can expect much more from them in the future.

Moxie (Netflix film) — The streaming service is cranking out the movies (at least one per week) this year, and this series co-stars Amy Poehler as a mom with a rebellious past. That past ends up inspiring her daughter, Vivian (Hadley Robinson), to anonymously publish an underground zine (called Moxie) to expose wrongdoers at her high school. In the process, she inspires a full-on movement and revolution, which leads to a shift and power from the cliques and clubs to a better environment for all at the school. The film also stars Lauren Tsai, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Nico Hiraga, Sydney Park, Josephine Langford, Clark Gregg, Josie Totah, Anjelika Washington, Charlie Hall, Sabrina Haskett, Ike Barinholtz, and Marcia Gay Harden.

Murder Among The Mormons (Netflix series) — Salt Lake City is struck by a series of fatal pipe bombs in 1985, and it’s easily one of the most shocking happenings in the history of the Mormon community. A criminal mastermind is to blame, and clues spring from early Mormon documents and diaries found scattered amid a rare document collection that’s in possession of one of the victims. This is a three-part miniseries and a true-crime documentary that digs into territory seldom seen for a genre that tends to focus on spooks and serial killers. Here, the main crimes in question went down in broad daylight, but as the episodes unfold, the darkness of what sparked these stunning killings slowly rises to the surface.

Snowfall: Season 4 Premiere (FX, 10:00pm) — The John Singleton-co-created series sees Franklin’s troubles move past the gang warfare and toward Cissy while revenge is the name of the game for Teddy and Gustavo. Franklin’s still aiming to regain control over his empire resisting an all-out war of drug violence in the mid 1980s, Reagan-era streets of America.

The Con (ABC, 10:00pm) — The ABC News series that examines wild fraud instances (from identity fraud to admissions scandal and more) now takes on the Fyre Festival. Yes, it’s the outrageous scandal that will never die.

Resident Alien (SyFy, 10:30pm) — Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Rogue One) is an alien, Harry, who’s pretending to be a doctor. This week, Harry feels jealousy when over a perfect new physician in town.
