The only way to improve on a nice, frothy pint of beer is by matching it up with a rich, layered dram of whiskey. Sure, you can go the pint and shot route, but amateur hour. Slow down and have an experience. Savor both of your drinks by pairing your favorite lagers, pilsners, and stouts with whiskeys that complement them.

Lee Noble, head bartender at Art in the Age in Philadelphia, likes to buck common wisdom when it comes to pairing beer and whiskey.

“Some say to avoid IPAs in this situation,” Noble says. “But I recommend finding a medium-bodied, citrusy, relatively dry IPA, like Sierra Nevada’s Hazy Little Thing and using it as a counterpoint to a sweet bourbon, like Maker’s Mark or Elijah Craig.”

Since pairing beer and whiskey can get incredibly complicated, we thought it best to bring in some ringers. So we asked a handful of bartenders to tell us their favorite beer and whiskey pairings for fall.

Hidden Springs Deja Moo Milk Stout (Knob Creek Smoked Maple Bourbon)

Anyone who has been to my house knows my home bar is stocked with a wide variety of both beer and whiskey. But if I’m picking strictly one beer to be paired with any variety of whiskey, I’m picking Deja Moo Milk Stout by Hidden Springs Ale Works. Aside from the roasted malts, coffee, and dark chocolate notes you’d expect from a stout, this beer has a smoky, spicy finish thanks to the inclusion of smoked chipotle peppers. The end result will complement any whiskey you pair with it without overpowering your palate — which is why I consider it the perfect beer to pair with whiskey.

My absolute favorite pairing has to be with Knob Creek Smoked Maple Bourbon. That whiskey has some wonderful cinnamon spice and caramel notes that shine in combination with the beer.

Kronenbourg 1664 (The Balvenie Double Wood)

Kronenbourg 1664 has a crisp, refreshing quality that balances the strength of a whiskey shot. It’s light sweetness and subtle pear notes smooth out any harshness of straight alcohol. It goes perfectly with a shot or glass of a mellow scotch like The Balvenie Double Wood.

Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout (Well Special Reserve)

I’m a sucker for a really good barrel-aged stout. One of my absolute favorites is the KBS stout ale, by Founders. The cocoa and roasted coffee notes work well with the oakiness of most smooth whiskies. Specifically, a bourbon, like Weller Special Reserve.

Because stouts are generally a bit heavier on the tongue, the whiskey cuts through that mouthfeel, making it a match made in heaven.

Guinness Draught (Bushmills Black)

My brother and I used to catch up at the pub on Monday nights over rounds of Bushmills Black and Guinness Draught. That experience has stuck with me, so I still go for pairings that provide a contrast, or a point-counterpoint, where the flavors pull you between two extremes yet still work together.

Miller High Life (Evan Williams Black Label)

Miller High life all day. It’s light, refreshing and it doesn’t blow out your palate.

If I had to pick a specific whiskey to pair it with, I would pick something like Evan Williams Black Label. It might be cheap, but it’s filled with flavors like charred oak, sweet caramel, and honey.

Krombacher Pils (Four Roses Small Batch)

Hayden Miller, head bartender at Bodega Taqueria y Tequila in Miami

Krombacher Pils pairs back very nicely with a whiskey since it is lighter with a slight floral note. I’d go with something like Four Roses Small Batch with its pleasing, vanilla-honey notes and complex flavors.

Coors Original (Jim Beam White Label)

Honestly, I am not as big of a High Life fan as others. I prefer Coors Banquet as my beer. I grew up on Coors Original and it has stuck with me ever since. Since I’m already going no frills in the beer department, I’ll pair it with the classic, rich, caramel, and vanilla flavors of Jim Beam White Label.

Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout (Booker’s Bourbon)

I love the pairing between Booker’s and most nitro stouts. Stouts are usually smooth, sweet, and silky and the ovenproof whiskey will add to that complexity and refresh the palate for the next sip.

My go-to is Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro with its creamy, sweet, chocolaty flavors that work perfectly with this unfiltered, uncut, bold bourbon.

Brew Dog Punk IPA (The Macallan 12)

The Punk IPA is produced by Scotland’s most famed craft brewery, Brew Dog. Hints of sweet malt, herbs, and grass are complimented greatly by the peat-forward, earthy character of Flavian’s. It also adds some tropical fruit notes to the palate, including mango and pineapple.

The fruits from the beer — which comes along in the form of apricots, green apples, and buttery biscuits — work well with the second wave of flavors from a good scotch whisky. I’d pair it with a sweeter Highland Scotch, like The Macallan 12.

Olde Mecklenberg Copper (Maker’s Mark)

I would say a nice lightly malty amber ale like Olde Mecklenberg Copper compliments the sweetness of a bourbon, especially one like Makers Mark, Four Roses Small Batch, or Burning Chair.

Blue Point Toasted Lager (Elijah Craig Barrel Proof)

It depends on the day, but I like Blue Point. Their toasted lager is just light enough, which makes it the perfect complement to any whiskey. I’d drink it alongside a glass of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof bourbon any day.

Peak Fresh Cut Pilsner (Old Forester 100)

Old Forester 100 proof Rye paired with Peak Fresh Cut Pilsner. Old Forester 100 proof Rye is quality whiskey, not harsh like many ryes and it’s rather smooth and rich. I taste oak, tobacco, plums, and a hint of caramel and it goes down easy for a 100 proof rye. Buy the beer and ask the bartender to pour two ounces of this fine whiskey in it — that’s always a good option. Peak Fresh Cut Pilsner is an amazing beer that I always enjoy.

Peak is an organic beer and you can taste the freshness in it. I can drink about six of those and not have that disgusting metallic taste that most lesser quality beers leave in my mouth. Pairing these two together is a match made in heaven. You get the freshness in the Peak Organic Fresh Cut Pilsner followed by spicy rich tones of Old Forester. I can drink those all night.

It feels like it’s been a lot longer than two years since Tierra Whack wowed the music industry with her amazing debut project, Whack World. The release featured 15 one-minute tracks that gave listeners just enough to pique interest in the Philly native all without giving away too much content. Whack later got onto a quick roll in 2019 with a bunch of singles as a part of Whack History Month series but soon fell quiet on the music side of things. That is, until now.

Hopefully the start of more to come, Tierra makes her return with her bouncy new single, “Dora.” The track is as quirky as she often appears to be and the song’s matching music video further proves that point. In the visual, Tierra appears as an animated version of herself alongside a good number of The Muppets characters including Kermit The Frog. After a quick money flex, things continue on the weird route and she hops on the shell of a turtle for a quick ride, presents Garfield in a clock, and prepares for war with a lipstick tank.

A few months prior to the single, she offered a quarantine remix for Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” track, one that came after she addressed colorism in the music industry in a Teen Vogue profile. “Seeing Lauryn [Hill] and then seeing Missy [Elliott] — they were making it,” she said. “I don’t think Missy was like, ‘I’m going to be a dark girl making it.’ I think she just did it. You just do it… If I could change [colorism in the industry], that would be really nice.”

Almost a decade ago, when they were closing in on their mainstream stardom, Ariana Grande and The Weeknd came together for their first-ever collab on the pop-heavy effort, “Love Me Harder.” The single found life on Ariana’s My Everything album. Seven years later, the two look to emulate the same success on another collab, one that appears on the songstress’ new Positions album. Slowing things down for their new effort, Ariana and The Weeknd unite for “Off The Table.” The easygoing ballad begins with Ariana questioning the existence of love after repeatedly failing to find it. She questions her ways before asking if love is a possibility anymore. The Weeknd steps in for the song to calm her fears, promising that as long as they work together, they will find love with each other in the near future.

The song is one of the many highlights on her sixth album, Positions. Across the 14-track album, Ariana also calls on Ty Dolla Sign and Doja Cat as guest features on the new release. After announcing the album’s tracklist, the pop singer explained the importance of the album as well as her satisfaction with it. “i don’t have a top three or anything ! everything goes hand in hand,” she said in a tweet. “this project is my favorite for many reasons and i really can’t wait for it to be yours. thank u for your love and excitement, it means the world to me.”

Musically, Pop Smoke is having a very successful year, making it even more unfortunate that the Brooklyn native was unable to live to see his success and accomplishments with his own eyes. After making its debut atop the Billboard albums chart back in July, Pop Smoke’s Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon returned to No. 1 this week, joining Lil Baby’s My Turn as the only albums this year to return to the top spot after at least three months. While his legacy lives on, Pop now has two additional songs to his discography thanks to French Montana’s “Double G” and Jay Gwuapo’s “Black Mask.”

The French Montana release is the “Pop That” rapper’s first single in a few months and prior to its release, he made sure to highlight the effect losing “brothers” like Pop has had on him. “Been a sh*tty year for all of us,” he said in a tweet earlier this week. “After I lost my brothers left and right, it took me a minute to get my head back in the game,” confidently adding, “NEW YORK STAND UP.” Jay Gwuapo is an up-and-coming act who also calls Brooklyn his home, making it expected that he and Pop Smoke were able to strike up a collab prior to his passing. He had also dropped his “Long Live The Woo” tribute track to Pop Smoke shortly after his death.

It seems like things have finally fallen in place for Megan Thee Stallion as she continues to make progress towards her upcoming debut album. The Houston rapper got things going for the upcoming project by making her solo debut on Saturday Night Live earlier this month. The appearance came after she shared her “Don’t Stop” single with Young Thug. While the wait for her debut continues, the “Savage” rapper brings her talents to DJ Chose’s buzzing “Thick” single for an animated remix.

Megan falls in line with the song’s theme and brings her energy to show love to all thick women in the world on her verse. She shouts out Texas and her Houston hotties before getting into action with a hard-hitting verse that she uses to flaunt her wealth, throw shade at her haters, and brag about the ability to finesse guys with ease.

Prior to the new verse, Megan posted a video of herself in the studio laying down a fiery freestyle. The two-minute video finds her flying through the thumping production with lines like “Freak in the sheets, freak on the beats / n****s been hooked since ‘Big Ol’ Freak’ / I realized that I was the sh*t when R&B n****s wanna start rap beef.” The new verse and the freestyle both stand as solid evidence to Megan’s promise that her debut will “go crazy.”

Paul Rudd is doing his best to make life in 2020 not nearly as bad as it could be. The actor helped out New York State, for example, with an extremely chill coronavirus mask PSA that looked more like a Tim and Eric sketch than a very serious and dire message from a government campaign.

The latest example of Rudd helping out others, though, comes with the backdrop of the presidential election. On Thursday, Rudd was caught by early voters handing out some very good cookies to those waiting in some not so great weather in the northeast in a video and some photos that quickly went viral.

Rudd was apparently one of the millions of Americans who have voted early in the election, as sites across the country have been set up in order to avoid clogging polling places as record turnout appears inevitable for the 2020 presidential election. Many large venues usually holding sporting events at this time of year have been turned into early voting places, like Boston’s Fenway Park and Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. And it was at the latter that Rudd, sporting an “I Voted” sticker himself, handed out cookies to those waiting in the rain outside to vote.

It’s a lovely gesture from a man who can certainly afford to share some cookies with those exercising their civic duty who do not get residuals from I Love You, Man. And it also is another example of just how extraordinary this election is. You often hear stories about voters in swing states getting pizzas ordered for them so they’ll stay in line amid long lines and polls closing. But you rarely hear stories about celebrities handing out cookies to voters days before those pizzas ever even get ordered.

Lil Durk’s year began with his impressive Just Cause Y’all Waited 2 project, one that saw him land his highest position on the Billboard singles chart as it debuted at No. 2. Soon after he joined Drake for their “Laugh Now, Cry Later” collaboration and returned to the solo route weeks later with the title track to his upcoming project, The Voice. As we await the release of that project, Lil Durk offers another single from The Voice, one that features Young Thug and 6lack.

Making his return with “Stay Down,” Lil Durk, Young Thug, and 6lack get to work on the Metro Boomin-produced track. Lil Durk bursts out the gate with a lead verse with his trademark autotuned vocals before welcoming 6lack to the stage. The “PRBLMS” singer lays a hook centered on stay beside your love interest through the hard times and the turmoil. He later drops a brief verse on the song that smoothly transitions to bring Young Thug in on the fun.

6lack is currently hard at work on his third album which will hopefully arrive by the end of the year. The project would stand as the follow up to his June EP, 6pc Hot. As for Young Thug, he is also working on an upcoming project, his Slime Language 2 compilation with his YSL labelmates.

Freddie Gibbs, Big Sean, and Hit-Boy have all posted impressive 2020s in the hip-hop world this year, so it’s only right the rappers bring their talents together for a new track. Entitled “4 Thangs,” the trio has spent the last month teasing and promoting the track with video of them together as the track plays in the background supported by their crisp and hard-hitting boards over Hit-Boy production. On the track, Sean and Freddie flex some muscles while separating themselves from the competition. “Million dollars, million followers, ho, that’s not the same,” they rap on the chorus. Rather than keeping their verses separate, the two rappers go back and forth within the verses, making for a thrilling experience.

Freddie may have a second project on the way this year, one that would succeed his joint album with The Alchemist, Alfredo. The rapper signed a deal with Warner Records shortly after the release of Alfredo and promised a new body of work was on the way. As for the other artists on the song, Big Sean is fresh off his refreshing Detroit 2 album, one that was executive produced by Hit-Boy. The Detroit native also promised a Twenty88 project with Jhene Aiko is on the way. Hit-Boy is also responsible for crafting Nas’ King’s Disease album and Benny The Butcher’s Burden Of Proof release as well.

Kim Kardashian’s island getaway in the middle of a pandemic made her an easy target for people on social media pointing out how tone deaf a display of extreme wealth is at a time of economic strife for many. But despite her own defense of the post, Kardashian apparently couldn’t help but double down with the help of a hologram on Thursday.

The celebrity shared a video of an apparent birthday gift from husband Kanye West, which was a hologram of her deceased father, Robert Kardashian. The video was a more than two-minute “message” from a glowing image of the former OJ Simpson lawyer wishing his daughter a happy birthday.

Kardashian’s tweet made it clear the gift meant a lot to her, but sharing it with the rest of the world certainly opened it up for interpretation from many bewildered people on social media. For one, it’s not cheap to, uh, make a hologram of someone who has died. And the grainy video made a glowing, ghost-like Robert Kardashian appear disturbing to some.

“I watch over you and your sisters and your brother and the kids every day,” was a kind sentiment, for example, which kind of came off as terrifying coming from a Kardashian right out of the uncanny valley. Take away the fact that getting a hologram for your birthday is an absurd display of wealth, the image of that hologram was upsetting to a lot of people.

Which is why there were, one again, a lot of opportunities to make jokes because of something Kardashian tweeted.

If you don’t want to watch all of the video, you’ll miss Kardashian dancing to Barry Mann’s “Who Put The Bomp.” No, really. And it definitely wasn’t a recording of Kardashian brought to life by hologram technology, but something new put together somehow and written well after his 2003 death. And considering it was a gift from West, it’s fitting that the hologram called Kanye a “genius” and used the word “most” several times in a row at different points in the video.

It’s unclear exactly what the tech involved in this was, but the hologram told Kardashian to “remember to say your prayers” before flickering away and disintegrating into a shower of golden sparks. Kardashian tweeted that she “watched it over and over, filled with emotion.” For the rest of us, however, you only need to watch it once for it to remain with you forever.

The Addams Family (1991)

More spooky than downright terrifying, this Halloween favorite has a theme-song that always slaps and a cast of colorful characters that people almost always borrow costume ideas from come October. The first installment in the franchise introduces us to Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) Adams, a feverishly-in-love couple who live in a gothic mansion with their two children, Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman), and a handful of other bizarre family members. When Gomez’s long-lost brother shows up, it’s up to Morticia and the children to uncover whether he’s really blood, or just a con-artist hoping to swindle them out of their fortune.

House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

Rob Zombie’s cult classic still manages to scare the ever-living sh*t out of us, even if its main villains are a group of backwater clowns. The film follows two young couples with a murder kink who go on a trip to try to uncover some true crime legends. That whole “be careful what you wish for” saying comes into play when they’re taken hostage and terrorized by a family of inbred circus people who find increasingly inventive, gruesome ways to hurt them. You know, because it’s fun.

Anaconda (1997)

Sure, this horror movie about a National Geographic film crew’s run-in with an oversized snake won’t be any Oscars, like ever, but come on … it’s Jennifer Lopez vs. an evil anaconda. You know you want to see who wins this grudge-match. J.Lo plays Terri Flores who, along with Ice Cube’s Danny Rich and Owen Wilson’s Gary Dixon, go searching for a long-lost Indigenous tribe in the Amazon only to be kidnapped by a madman (Jon Voight) on the hunt for the world’s deadliest predator. It’s a generic creature feature but it still delivers the jumps.

Creep (2014)

One of the better found-footage movies to come down the pike in Paranormal Activity‘s wake is this creepy gem about a videographer (director Patrick Brice) who answers a strange Craigslist ad from a man (Mark Duplass) that requests to be followed around with a camera for 24 hours. There are a few points late in the narrative where suspension of disbelief becomes an issue (a not-atypical problem for the genre), but if you can look past that, you’ll be treated to a very scary turn by Duplass and a supremely-unnerving epilogue.

Shutter (2004)

Run Time: 97 min | IMDb: 7.1/10

This Thai horror film follows a young man named Tun and his girlfriend, Jane, who accidentally run over a young woman after a party and are haunted by her spirit. Hauntings and horror go hand-in-hand, but this film digs deeper into the supernatural trope by revealing a surprising, gruesome connection between the woman’s ghost and the film’s protagonist. We won’t spoil anything here, but let’s just say there’s a reason this death follows this guy wherever he goes.

The Bar (2017)

A varied group of people is stuck in a bar after a man is gunned down outside. As the paranoia spreads and they turn on one another, they discover a mysterious sickness could be the culprit. It’s a bottle-type plot that has been done before — locking a bunch of frenzied folks in a cage and let instincts take their course — but this Spanish horror comedy injects its own dark humor and keeps the answers to a minimum, making an entertaining story that unfortunately favors the “dark” over the “comedy” in its final act.

The Evil Dead (1981)

This ’80s Sam Raimi creation launched the director’s career and has since become a cult classic. The story follows a group of college students vacationing in an isolated cabin in a remote wooded area when they find an audio tape that somehow releases a legion of demons and spirits. Most of the group suffer varying degrees of possession which leads to gory mayhem (hence the film’s NC-17 rating).

The Babysitter (2017)

Samara Weaving (who has another fantastic horror film out called Ready Or Not) stars in this comedy scare about a serial-killer babysitter and the young boy she looks after. Weaving plays Bee, a babysitter who befriends a boy named Cole. While she’s watching him one night, Cole witnesses Bee and a group of her friends kill a man and perform a demonic ritual, which sets off a string of events that end in blood, death, and talk of cults.

Secrets in The Hot Springs (2018)

This Taiwanese horror flick follows three youngsters, who meet by accident at a mysterious hot springs hotel. When strange occurrences begin to take place, the group must band together to save each other and the family that lives there. This thing starts off scary, but it won’t give you the kind of nightmares that the rest of the films on this list might.

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Strange, spooky sh*t happens when Tim Burton and Johnny Depp team up and that fact remains true for this re-telling of a particularly haunting legend. Depp plays Ichabod Crane, a detective of sorts who’s sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate three deaths by decapitation. What he ends up encountering instead is a malevolent specter known as The Headless Horseman, who’s been terrorizing the town and now has his sights set on him.

Hubie Halloween (2020)

Adam Sandler is back with that signature lisp for this more family-friendly-esque Halloween treat. Sandler plays Hubie Dubois, a small-town screw-up who’s constantly bullied by the locals. Despite this, he loves Salem and its annual Halloween bash, so when a malevolent force tries to crash the party and, ya know, kill everyone, it’s up to him to save the holiday. We doubt this will give you nightmares, but sometimes a good scary movie isn’t just about being scared — you know what we mean?
