‘Doom Patrol’ Is Taking The Yellow Brick Road On The Way To Its HBO Max Debut

Less than 24 hours after its launch, HBO Max is making it very clear that it’s fully in the Warner Bros./DC Comics business.

The streaming service just revealed a brand new poster for the upcoming season two of Doom Patrol, which will officially premiere on June 25. If the new promo art is giving off strong The Wizard of Oz vibes, that would be thanks to the focus on the appropriately-dressed Dorothy Spinner (Abigail Shapiro) who will play a prominent role in the new season of the fan-favorite series.

HBO Max

And below is the official poster for the simultaneous premiere on DC Universe. Obviously, this poster leans even heavier into The Wizard of Oz theme while also offering a clear look at Dorothy’s unusual face, which was only briefly glimpsed in the season one finale.

Here’s the official synopsis for the second season of Doom Patrol:

DC’s strangest group of heroes — Cliff Steele aka Robotman (Brendan Fraser), Larry Trainor aka Negative Man (Matt Bomer), Rita Farr aka Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby), Jane aka Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), and Victor Stone aka Cyborg (Joivan Wade) — are back again to save the world. That is, if they can find a way to grow up…both figuratively and literally. Following the defeat of Mr. Nobody, the members of the Doom Patrol now find themselves mini-sized and stranded on Cliff’s toy race car track. Here they begin to deal with their feelings of betrayal by Niles Caulder aka The Chief (Timothy Dalton), while confronting their own personal baggage. And as each member faces the challenge of growing beyond their own past traumatic experiences, they must come together to embrace and protect the newest member of the family: Dorothy Spinner (Abigail Shapiro), Niles’ daughter, whose powers remain a mysterious but real threat to bringing on the end of the world.

Doom Patrol Season 2 debuts June 25 on both HBO Max and DC Universe.

Flatbush Zombies’ Hard-Hitting ‘Iamlegend’ Previews Their Forthcoming EP ‘Now, More Than Ever’

Last week, Flatbush Zombies returned to social media with a photo implying an impending release. “What’s happening exactly ?” teased Meechy Darko, one part of the Brooklyn hip-hop trio. On Thursday, Flatbush Zombies revealed what the hype was all about. The group announced a forthcoming EP and previewed the project with “Iamlegend.”

“Iamlegend” offers a glimpse into Flatbush Zombies’ first project since their 2018 record Vacation In Hell. Slated for early June, Flatbush Zombies plan a return with a six-track EP titled Now, More Than Ever. On the lead single, a rolling beat provides a fitting backdrop for rappers Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice, and Erick Arc Elliott to deliver their fiery flow.

The group’s accompanying “Iamlegend” visual is a disorienting compilation of many snapshots of life. Directed by PTA HAITI 3000, the video was filmed over the span of two months in three separate cities where Flatbush Zombies’ members were individually quarantined.

In a previous interview with Uproxx following their 2018 release, Flatbush Zombies’ Erick Arc Elliot offered is means of escaping reality, which also stands as a glimpse into the rapper’s life in quarantine: “I read a lot, I draw, I play video games,” he said. “I create stuff all the time, I feel guilty when I don’t. That’s probably my own doing, but it’s just the way that I am. At this point I think I can’t help it, so once I stop making music — which is never — I find other ways to get my mind off of thinking about the pressures of how people are going to feel about it when it comes out.”

Listen to “Iamlegend” above and find Flatbush Zombies’ Now, More Than Ever tracklist below.

1. “Herb”
2. “Iamlegend”
3. “Quicksand”

Tarana Burke shared an eye-opening story of why her partner wouldn’t carry a pink tote bag

Being a black man in America comes with its own baggage—literally and figuratively.

Tarana Burke—the woman who coined the original #MeToo movement back in 2006—shared a story on Twitter that highlights one of the myriad things black men have to think about that most Americans do not.

She wrote:

“A few months ago my dude was looking for a tote bag to carry some things to the post office. I gave the biggest bag I had which happened to be bright pink and red. He saw the bag and immediately asked for another one. When I asked why he just insisted on a different color bag.”

“His insistence annoyed me and I started in on him fussing about it being sexist and homophobic, even to reject a bag based on thinking it’s too effeminate! He let me fuss at him for a minute and then finally he said ‘Baby, please stop. That’s not it!’

He said ‘I’m a 6’3 Black man. If I’m walking down the street with a bright pink bag I could look like I stole it from a woman – which could attract police attention. I’m never trying to give these cops a reason to stop me. Ever.’ Never occurred to me.”

It would never occur to me, either. If my white husband were walking around carrying a big pink tote bag, no one would assume he stole a woman’s purse. No one. They might giggle at him. They might think it was adorable, or even courageously feminist, for him to boldly carry a bright pink tote around. No way would there be a presumption of criminality in that image.

And yet black men in America have to think about how they might be viewed by everyone around them. They have to think about how their actions might make people feel uncomfortable, afraid, or suspicious in ways that others do not.

Burke also shared a second story that highlights the baggage of fear and careful calculation black men like her partner carry around with them. She wrote:

“A few years ago me and dude are out and come back to his car to find it vandalized. He parked by a driveway and partially blocked it and we concluded that the owners had vandalized the car. I get pissed and go knock on the door. They don’t answer so I’m yelling!

He’s telling me to calm down and forget it but I’m pissed! A few minutes later cop car rolls by and they stop and get out. I start to tell them what happened and they walk up on him and immediately start questioning him. I interrupt and say ‘excuse me HIS car was vandalized!'”

“The cops tell me to ‘be quiet’ and just as I’m about to turn all the way up on them he turns to me and says ‘Baby, please…’ firmly. Then he calmly answers the cops questions even though they are rude and invasive. They take his license and keep asking ridiculous questions..

‘What are you all doing here?’

‘Did you get into an altercation earlier tonight?’

‘If I knock on these people’s door what are they going to say?’

I was fuming. Now I’m nervous. They eventually stop and let us go. We ride back to my house silently. He goes home.”

“Later he calls and says ‘Please don’t do that again.’ I got it. I could hear the stress in his voice. I thought about both of these stories today. A lot. I know what’s it’s like worrying that my child, partner, brother or other loved ones will meet an Amy Cooper or worse…

…cops like George Floyd did.”

“I know my fears as a Black woman moving through the world,” Burke added. “Especially one who has been harassed and harmed by police. My deep sadness today is for Black men and all Black people who for whom this stress and anxiety never relents.

So many Black folks have died of Covid. So many of them Black men. It’s hard not to feel under siege one way or another and it’s all just too much. That’s all I’m saying I guess. I’m ranting my feelings right now because it’s all too much. #BlackLifeMatters

The terrible truth is that black men don’t have to be threatening to be seen as a threat. Black men don’t have to have committed a crime to be seen as criminal. Black men have to actively go out of their way to not look suspicious, even when they are doing normal, everyday things. And they have to do so knowing they could lose their life if they aren’t convincing enough in front of the wrong people.

We’ve seen it over and over and over again. Until we actively deprogram ourselves and actively demand change in our law enforcement and justice systems, black men will continue to be burdened by this baggage that they don’t deserve and didn’t ask for.

Italy’s Serie A Will Be Back On June 20 After Green Light From The Italian Government

Soccer is returning across Europe, and Italy’s Serie A became the latest to announce its resumption this week, when Italian Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora gave the soccer league the go-ahead for a planned June 20 return to the pitch.

“Italy is starting up again and it is only right that football does, too,” Spadafora said on Thursday.

The league plans to finish out the Coppa Italia, an annual cup competition, from June 13-20 and then bring the Serie A back in full starting on June 20. The Coppa has three matches left — two semifinal matches featuring Juventus, AC Milan, SSC Napoli and Inter Milan, and then a final.

As Gabriele Marcotti noted at ESPN, the Italian league has a ton of its season left to play, as Italy was among the first countries to see a mass outbreak at the outset of the pandemic that put sports on hold worldwide. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see teams consistently playing twice a week to condense the schedule, and also more experimental fixtures like single-elimination postseason matches.

Serie A follows Bundesliga, which arrived in Germany this month as the country stamped out its epidemic more effectively, and the Premier League, which announced its June return a few hours before Spadafora gave Serie A the green light.

Sports are arriving in a wave that follows in the wake of countries flattening their epidemic curves, with no crowds and a mass of fans eager to watch their favorite teams again on television.

Dafne Keen Landed Her ‘Logan’ Role By Punching The Crap Out Of Hugh Jackman

With audiences trapped inside, directors have been stepping up in a big way by hosting “quarantine watch parties” where they gather with fans on social media to offer insights and field questions about fan-favorite films. Last night, James Mangold joined the lockdown trend by hosting a watch party for Logan, the critically-acclaimed swan song for Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine.

While Jackman delivered a brutal, yet emotionally poignant performance as the aged and dying mutant hero, newcomer Dafne Keen made a definitive mark on the film with her grounded and visceral portrayal of Laura, better known as X-23 to comic fans. As Mangold notes during the watch party, Keen absolutely anchored the film, and Logan wouldn’t have been the same without her in the breakout role.

“There’s no way this film works w/o the remarkable [Dafne] Keen,” Mangold tweeted. “By the film’s 2nd half, the tables have turned & she is carrying the entire movie as Logan has retreated in sickness & self doubt. & of course, she holds the final frame.”

Jackman was apparently following the proceedings closely, and the actor made a surprise cameo during the watch party to bolster Mangold’s praise for Keen. Jackman also revealed how she landed the part by leaving him beaten and bruised after the audition, which is pretty impressive considering how insanely ripped he gets whenever he’s gearing up to play Wolverine.

“The first day we auditioned her … she punched me in the arm so hard, I was literally bruised the next day,” Jackman wrote. “Hired.”
