Navy aircraft carrier captain ousted for raising alarm on COVID-19 received a hero’s send-off from sailors

Captain Brett Crozier received a thunderous send-off Friday morning as he exited the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt in Guam. Video taken by sailors on the aircraft carrier show hundreds of service members chanting “Captain Crozier! Captain Crozier!” and clapping as he walked down the gangway.

Crozier was relieved of his duty by Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly after sending a strongly-worded letter to navy leadership about the spread of COVD-19 on his ship.

He was ousted for sending the letter over “non-secure unclassified email” to a “broad array of people” rather than up the chain of command.

In the letter, Crozier urged Navy leadership to evacuate the vessel as the rate of infection among the sailors increased. “We are not at war, and therefore cannot allow a single Sailor to perish as a result of this pandemic unnecessarily,” Crozier wrote.

As of Wednesday, around 25% of the 4,800-member crew had been tested for COVID-19 and 93 were found to be infected. It’s expected that 2700 service members will vacate this ship this week, with a small crew staying on board for maintenance.

The letter was leaked to the media sparking outrage across the country. Modly says the letter also caused a panic among the sailors on the ship and their families back home.

“I have no doubt in my mind that Captain Crozier did what he thought was in the best interest of the safety and well-being of his crew,” Modly said. “Unfortunately, it did the opposite. It unnecessarily raised the alarm of the families of our sailors and Marines with no plans to address those concerns.”

“The responsibility for this decision rests with me,” Modly added. “I expect no congratulations for it. Captain Crozier is an incredible man.”

Crozier will keep his rank and remain in the Navy.

Former Vice President Joe Biden criticized the navy’s acting secretary in a statement saying that he “shot the messenger — a commanding officer who was faithful to both his national security mission and his duty to care for his sailors, and who rightly focused attention on a broader concern about how to maintain military readiness during this pandemic.”

Michael Washington shared footage of Crozier’s send off where someone is heard saying, “That’s how you send out one of the greatest captains you ever had.”

Video taken by Taliah Peterkin shows Crozier exiting the ship and giving a final salute.

Footage shared on Twitter by Danny Ocean shows Crozier taking a long walk down the gangway to a cheering crowd chanting his name.

The footage of Crozier exiting the ship is a beautiful display of sailors cheering the man who sacrificed his career to protect not only their lives and the health of everyone they would encounter. Even though he’s no longer captain of the U.S.S. Roosevelt, there’s no doubt his heroism will be long remembered by his former crew or the country he proudly serves.

Justin Bieber Gets Introspective On His Life’s ‘Changes’ In An Icy Video

After a five year hiatus, Justin Bieber returned in 2020 with the smooth record Changes. Since the record’s release, Bieber has been proactive about providing visual content. The singer began his Changes: The Movement campaign which released a choreography video to nearly every track on his album. Now, Beiber returns with a nature visual accompanying his album’s title track to give fans a taste of the outdoors while stuck in quarantine.

Directed by Michael D. Ratner, Bieber’s visual shows the singer exploring a vast and frozen landscape. Bundled up, Bieber turns introspective while examining the changes he has recently undergone in his personal life. “I just wanna be the best of me / Even though sometimes, I forget to breathe / So that I can be the best for you / That’s all I wanna do,” he croons.

Ahead of his album’s release, Bieber shared the 10-part docuseries on YouTube titled Seasons. The series arrived as a deep dive into the singer’s five-year hiatus. In the documentary, Bieber spoke about getting married to his wife Hailey Baldwin, being diagnosed with Lyme disease, quitting a tour due to insurmountable pressure, and getting back into songwriting for his latest record.

Future’s Fan-Favorite ‘Beast Mode’ Mixtape Hits Streaming Services For The First Time Since 2016

Way back in 2015, just six months after releasing his sophomore album Honest, Future shocked the world with Beast Mode, his collaborative mixtape with trap production pioneer Zaytoven. It was the second of his impressive, fan-favorite series of mixtapes which included Monster and 56 Nights that solidified Future as superstar and a production machine who could drop entire album-quality projects at an unprecedented clip. Unfortunately, Beast Mode had never been available for fans to officially stream — until today.

For the first time, Beast Mode has hit DSPs, allowing Future to collect the revenue he once told Uproxx he was missing out on by not being able to monetize his old projects — although he was able to capitalize on Beast Mode somewhat by releasing a sequel in 2018. However, last October he was able to upload Monster on its fifth anniversary as one of several rappers to bring a beloved catalog classic to streaming services. Now that he’s followed up with Beast Mode, it looks pretty much inevitable that he’ll have fans clamoring for 56 Nights to join the trilogy (as of today, the project is available to search and view, but the only playable track is “March Madness”).

Beast Mode is out now via Epic Records. Get it here.

We Pledge Allegiance To Quibi’s ’50 States Of Fright’ Trailer From Sam Raimi

If even an 80-minute movie is too long for you right now, there’s always Quibi. The “quick bites” streaming service, where every episode is 10 minutes or less, launches on Monday, April 6. Stay tuned for our write-up of what to watch (whether because it’s good, or because it’s very weird) on Jeffrey Katzenberg’s $1.7 billion gamble, but until then, Quibi has released a trailer for one of its more intriguing shows: 50 States of Fright.

The horror anthology series from executive producer Sam Raimi, the mastermind behind the Evil Dead series and the original Spider-Man trilogy (as well as the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) “explores stories based on urban legends from Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon, and Washington taking viewers deeper into the horrors that lurk just beneath the surface of our country,” according to Quibi. The first season will have seven episodes (hence the seven states), which means Fright will have to run at least seven seasons (with a bonus episode) to cover all of America. Unless it’s a Sufjan thing, and the gimmick gets abandoned after two seasons. Either way, I can’t wait for the Florida episode.

The cast includes Rachel Brosnahan, Travis Fimmel, Christina Ricci, Jacob Batalon, Ming-Na Wen, Taissa Farmiga, Asa Butterfield, John Marshall Jones, Ron Livingston, Victoria Justice, Karen Allen, and James Ransone. Watch the trailer above.
