The Most Interesting Players In The Eastern Conference For The Second Half Of The Season

damian lillard

The NBA returned from the All-Star break on Thursday night, and on Friday, 20 teams are going to play their first game since the league took its annual midseason break to watch good players shoot threes and dunk. While we can’t say for sure, we can predict with some certainty which 10 teams are making the playoffs or the Play-In Tournament in both conferences, although the races in the East and the West for positioning are as tight as ever.

In the East, the Boston Celtics are probably going to get the 1-seed barring something completely insane, while the Chicago Bulls and the Atlanta Hawks are in a spot to jostle for 9th and 10th down the stretch. And then, basically everything else is up in the air — only 6.5 games separate the Cleveland Cavaliers in second and the Miami Heat in eighth.

With so much still needing to be sorted out, we took a look at which players deserved to be watched more closely than the rest in the race for positioning in the East.

Darius Garland

Here’s a question: Can the Cleveland Cavaliers win the Eastern Conference? As of right now, they’re in second place without much of a chance of getting the 1-seed (they’re seven games behind Boston). They’re also two games up on the Milwaukee Bucks and three games up on the New York Knicks in third and fourth, and they have the best record in the league since the calendar turned to 2024. Their defense is going to be very good as long as Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley are playing (Isaac Okoro shooting almost 40 percent from three helps immensely, too), while Donovan Mitchell has played at an MVP level and has thrived in a more ball-dominant role.

Still, it’s Garland who might hold the key to the entire thing. He’s a theoretical perfect fit as a guy on a team that embraces ball movement and letting it fly from three, but he’s only shooting 34 percent from behind the arc and Mitchell’s emergence as the lead ball-handler during his time away from the team with a fractured jaw has forced an adjustment period since he came back at the end of January. Garland is talented enough to figure things out and, while this is a small sample size, started to find his jumper in the four games before the All-Star break. The Cavs are already a dangerous team in the playoffs, but if Garland can get into a rhythm, look out.

Damian Lillard

Good luck trying to figure literally anything out about the Bucks. They fired Adrian Griffin with the hopes that Doc Rivers would fix their defense. The good news: They’ve taken a step forward on that end, as the team is 10th in defensive rating since Rivers took over. The bad news: Their offense is horrible, ranking 23rd on that end of the floor in that same period. And amid all of this, the team’s superstar offseason acquisition has been flat-out not good enough on offense. During Rivers’ time as coach, Lillard has played in eight games (including, to be fair, all three of their wins). He’s averaged 21.1 points and 6.4 assists per game while shooting 42.1 percent from the field and 31.7 percent from three. In the 43 games he played before that: 25.3 points, 6.8 assists, 42.3 percent from the field, 34.5 percent from three.

He’s getting to the free throw line a ton and is lights out once he gets there, which has helped, and good things tend to happen when he’s on the floor with at least one of Giannis Antetokounmpo or Khris Middleton. Still, he has to shoulder a big burden on that end of the floor, and any hope the Bucks have of competing for a championship involves him being one of the 10 or so best offensive players in the league. If there is good news, it’s that everyone in Milwaukee seemed to understand that patience was necessary to get things humming, and that was before the coach got fired midseason. They might be the team to watch most closely in the, say, first five games out of the break.

Everyone on the Knicks who is hurt

New York legitimately goes 10 deep, knocked the trade deadline out of the park, and can absolutely bully teams on both ends of the floor when they’re cooking. The problem: The team is insanely injured right now, as three starters (OG Anunoby, Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson) are all out and have no clear timetable to return — Anunoby hopes to be back before the playoffs start from elbow surgery, Randle might need season-ending shoulder surgery, Robinson’s potential return from ankle surgery is up in the air. New York has managed well without Robinson thanks to Isaiah Hartenstein (whose achilles gave him some issues before the break, but looks to be alright), but his return would certainly be welcomed nonetheless.

They really need to get Anunoby and Randle back, though, and can make a run in the East if those two are playing and firing on all cylinders alongside Jalen Brunson. That’s especially the case if they can get the second or third seed — right now, they’re in fourth (i.e. they’d play Boston in the conference semis), but are three games back of second and one game back of third. Getting healthy and making a push for the 2-seed, thereby giving them homecourt through the first two rounds, would be gigantic.

Joel Embiid

Hey, here’s an easy one. It’s unclear when Embiid will be able to return to the Philadelphia 76ers after injuring his meniscus at the end of January. There’s a very delicate balance Philly has to strike here: Bring Embiid back too early and risk him aggravating the injury. Bring him back too late and risk him not getting into any sort of a rhythm before the postseason rolls around … or risk falling into the Play-In Tournament, as they’re only 1.5 games up on the Orlando Magic for the 7-seed in the East. It’s tough, because if he plays and looks like himself, the Sixers are a championship-caliber team. Of course, “if he looks like himself” has long been the question for Embiid come playoff time, so Philly’s chances of making it out of the East — particularly if they can settle into a spot where they’d avoid Boston until the Conference Finals — are entirely dependent on the guy who looked like he had a chance to cruise to a second-straight MVP through the first 45 or so games of the season coming back and doing just that.

Pascal Siakam

Milwaukee, New York, and Philadelphia all have injuries to star-level players they need to sort through in the coming days and weeks. Indiana, meanwhile, is going into the second half of the year with a healthy Tyrese Haliburton and a healthy Pascal Siakam. We know how good Haliburton is as he’s made a leap into being one of the best players in the league, while Siakam has generally hit the ground running since his trade from Toronto, a snug fit on a team that was crying out for a player who could impact the game on both ends of the floor like him. When those two are on the floor together, the Pacers are scoring a ridiculous 124.2 points per 100 possessions and boast an effective field goal percentage of 62 percent, which is insane. The usual disclaimer applies, though: Indiana has to be able to get stops. Siakam making his impact felt on that end would be huge, and since acquiring him, the Pacers are 20th in the league in defensive rating. They’re allowing 2.1 fewer points per 100 possessions since Siakam came on board, which is a step in the right direction, even if their offense isn’t quite as lethal as it was. Still, as long as Haliburton plays, we’re confident the offense will be fine.

Terry Rozier

Miami’s offense has been in the mud all season, and the idea behind giving up one of their ultra-valuable future first-round picks was that Rozier would be able to provide a shot in the arm. That just did not happen prior to the knee injury that is keeping him out week-to-week — in 299 minutes over 10 games before he went down, the Heat were scoring 6.2 points worse per 100 possession when Rozier was out there. No one has ever felt good about writing off Miami, and I’m certainly not doing that here, but having another option on offense — whether it’s as a scorer, shooter, or playmaker — would make life considerably easier on Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro, and Bam Adebayo heading into April. Worth noting: Miami has the third-easiest schedule in the league down the stretch, with nine of their final 27 games coming against the Pistons, Wizards, Blazers, and Raptors.

Jon Stewart Had A Profound (And Hilarious) Answer For Why He Still Works On ‘Dying’ TV Instead Of TikTok

Jon Stewart had a profound response to the state of television while working the crowd ahead of the recent episode of The Daily Show. The beloved host returned his old stomping ground as a part-time host on Monday evenings, and the gig involves more than just sitting at the big desk dropping zingers on Trump and Biden.

Like any good comedian, Stewart warmed up the crowd ahead of the show by partaking in some light Q&A with the audience. However, the returning host was hit with an existential question from about why Stewart isn’t working in social media where most young people get their news. The audience member took things even further by noting that “TV is dying.”

After feigning shock about the obvious fact that TV is being surpassed by TikTok, Stewart joked, “In your mind, seeing as I work in television, will I die first? ‘Cause if that’s the case, I don’t mind.”

The Daily Show host then got serious for a minute as he educated the young whippersnapper on media consumption.

Via Deadline:

“You still watch TV but you just watch it on your computer [or phone],” he said. “You understand that’s still TV? You’re just watching it on a different delivery service. It’s like, heroin is heroin whether you snort it or shoot it. It’s still an opiate for the masses as is television, you’re just getting it in smaller bites. But it’s still TV. We make it.”

However, Stewart’s answer didn’t seem to register with the young man as he seemed to still very concerned for The Daily Show host.

“You have a look on your face like, ‘This poor boy, if only he knew the business he was in,’” Stewart quipped.

Cillian Murphy Needed His Head Glued Shut After An Unfortunate Pillow Incident Caused By Emily Blunt

Over the last few months, Emily Blunt has been using her interviews to quietly and discretely drop various hints to seemingly prove that filming Oppenheimer destroyed Cillian Murphy and that he is just a shell of the man he once was. But she normally recites these stories while laughing, so we shouldn’t take it too seriously.

Blunt has already recalled a grueling scene where she hit him over and over (and over) again, hurting his “famous cheekbones,” but it also appears that she has also been psychologically torturing the famously private man. She has been constantly teasing her co-star about his eyes, sharing his private nighttime plans (“having a bath”), and comparing him to a kidnapper. She also answers his questions for him like that one annoying kid in the group project. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Blunt revealed that she gifted Murphy with a pillow to help him sleep, but it subsequently caused him to bash his head open. How much more is he expected to endure?

Blunt appeared alongside Murphy on Jimmy Kimmel Live where she told the story. “I just felt Cillian needed, even more than food, sleep on this movie. So I got him this very beautiful pillow that I’m obsessed with, a Hästens pillow,” she began. While a pillow seemed like a nice gesture, it quickly turned sour.

“He was really luxuriating in this pillow one night, and he woke up in the middle of the night, this is what he told me the next day. He went to fluff himself back down in the pillow, misjudged where it was, and smashed his head open on the bedside table. So he came to work, and they had to glue his head shut!” she recalled with a haunting laugh. “I was having a great sleep and then…bang,” Murphy responded grimly. He can’t seem to catch a break.

On the other hand, Robert Downey Jr. has been putting Blunt in her place by constantly telling the press to “ignore Emily” because she’s “tripping on mushrooms.” You can watch the (obviously harmless) bullying above.

Who Is Opening For Kid Cudi’s ‘Insano World Tour’ In 2024?

Kid Cudi The Book Of Clarence Premiere Los Angeles 2024
Getty Image

Kid Cudi is making good on all his promises to fans in 2023. After delaying his anticipated album, Insano, the project is finally available across streaming platforms. As an added treat, the “Heaven’s Galaxy” rapper released the deluxe version shortly after. Now, after a string of pop-up shows, Cudi is ready to embark on a full tour to support a body of work.

Yesterday (February 22), Cudi took to his official X (formerly Twitter) page to tease his forthcoming Insano World Tour. So, what do we know about the schedule of performances? To be honest, not much in terms of dates and ticket prices. However, thanks to the graphic shared by Cudi and the tour’s fan sign-up webpage, two opening acts have been unveiled.

Continue below for more information.

Who Is Opening For Kid Cudi’s Insano World Tour In 2024?

So far, Pusha T and Jaden are the only confirmed guests for the Insano World Tour. But Kid Cudi has hinted that more musicians will be added to the lineup later.

Pusha T

Rap veteran Pusha T is the first name listed on the announcement poster, and rightfully so. The Virginia Beach, Virginia native made his bones as part of the sibling hip-hop duo Clipse (known for hits songs “Grindin” and “Mr. Me Too” produced by The Neptunes). As a soloist, Pusha T has found success under Kanye West’s GOOD Music Imprint, releasing a series of revered mixtapes and albums. But his most popular track to date is his 2018 record “The Story Of Adidon,” his diss toward Drake.

However, now that Pusha T has distanced himself from West, Cudi and West reconciled, things could get interesting on the road.

Jaden

Jaden is the second supporting act listed on Kid Cudi’s Insano World Tour announcement graphic. If you were asking yourself, is that the Jaden you think it is…yes it is. Jaden, a.k.a Jaden Smith, the actor, humanitarian, and musician, will join Cudi on the road. Most people tend to remember Jaden from his on-screen cameos in films such as The Pursuit Of Happyness and Karate Kid. Still, most of his creative pursuits are in music (i.e., Spider-Man: Miles Morales soundtrack appearance).

Jaden first broke into music with his hit 2017 song, “Icon.” Given Jaden’s deep admiration and friendship with Cudi, his set will be interesting to watch.

How Many Episodes Are In ‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’ Season 1?

Rick Grimes
AMC

The Walking Dead devotees have been waiting, patiently, for the return of Andrew Lincoln to their screens ever since a horse tossed Rick Grimes into a world of pain. AMC already rolled out a few other new spinoffs — Dead City and Daryl Dixon — over the past year, and now, here comes the icing: Lincoln and Danai Gurira back as Rick and Michonne in a love story that even works for non-romantics.

Viewers should also expect to see the gore and maneuvering that we’re used to seeing from walkers and humans in these shows, but of course, people are really here for the central couple. Also, we’ll get to see Pollyanna McIntosh’s Jadis follow up on bringing Rick into the inescapable CRM mess in which he found himself. That’s disharmony at its finest on TV. How many episodes will we see in this season?

The good news is that both the Maggie/Negan and Daryl spinoffs have both been greenlight for second season and are finishing up production at a pace that means we’ll see them again soon. However, the less than awesome news is that the first The Ones Who Live season is fairly short: 6 episodes. Viewers can rest assured, however, that not a moment is wasted, and in particular, the fourth episode slaps.

AMC’s The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live debuts (and streams via AMC+) on Feb. 25.

Just As Everyone Suspected, Joe Biden Says That The Key To His Great Marriage Is Lots And Lots Of Hot, Geriatric Boning

joe jill

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have been married since 1977. Other notable things that happened that year: Jimmy Carter was sworn in as POTUS, Fleetwood Mac released Rumours, Star Wars came out. The Bidens have been married for as long as freaking Star Wars has existed.

So, what’s the secret to their successful marriage? Sex.

A new book, American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady, from Hillary Clinton to Jill Biden by author and New York Times reporter Katie Rogers, claims that the 81-year-old president is fond of telling people that he and Jill are still together because they have “good sex.” Joe doles out this martial advice to his aides, “much to his wife’s chagrin,” according to the Daily Mail.

Biden comes across as more of a romantic elsewhere in the book:

The Bidens are an openly affection couple, showing their love for one another with public romantic gestures. The president took his wife out for a date night in Rehoboth Beach in August, where the couple had a seafood meal at Matt’s Fish Camp and then headed to the local theater to see Oppenheimer… They concluded their date night with a romantic walk on the beach to see the super moon, which is when a full moon occurs near the Moon’s closest point to Earth in its monthly orbit. The president had his arm around the first lady.

How many times has Joe taken Jill on a date to an ice cream shop? I’m guessing at least 50 times.

American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady, from Hillary Clinton to Jill Biden comes out on February 27th.

Folksy Dim Bulb Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville Seems To Have No Clue That IVF Actually Helps People Have Kids And Isn’t A Form Of Abortion Or Something : ‘We Need To Have More Kids’

Tommy Tuberville
Getty Image

Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville seems to have no clue what damage his home state has wrought following a new controversial court ruling that declares embryos are children. As a staunchly pro-life Republican, Tuberville apparently thought the ruling would stop abortion, and he clearly had no idea that it actually made in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments untenable throughout the state.

“Yeah, I was all for it,” Tuberville proudly told a reporter outside a conservative event on Thursday via The Guardian. “We need to have more kids, we need to have an opportunity to do that, and I thought this was the right thing to do.”

“I think the big thing is right now, you protect – you go back to the situation and try to work it out to where it’s best for everybody,” Tuberville added. “I mean, that’s what – that’s what the whole abortion issue is about.”

However, Tuberville’s demeanor quickly changed when the reported noted that the ruling would have the opposite effect as IVF providers across the state announced they will no longer provide the process. Less IVF equals less kids, Tommy.

Via The Guardian:

“That’s a hard one,” Tuberville said when asked about IVF availability in Alabama. “It really is.”

Tuberville said: “I’d have to look at what they’re agreeing to and not agreeing to. I haven’t seen that.”

Realizing that Tuberville obliviously walked into a mess, the senator’s office issued a statement clarifying that he does not support halting IVF procedures, which again, will make more babies, not less.

“In addition to being pro-life and believing life begins at conception, Senator Tuberville is also pro-family,” spokesperson Hannah Eddins said. “He believes strong families are instrumental to our country’s success.
