‘House Of The Dragon’: Are There Any New Updates For Season 2?

House of the Dragon
HBO

HBO sure knew what they were doing when they decided to shelve that Bloodmoon prequel (to Game of Thrones) in favor of letting the messy Targaryen history soar on House of the Dragon. Not only do viewers now get to see fire-breathing beasts but also their riders as the earlier posturing for the Iron Throne led to the downfall of the long-ruling house. Naturally, much of this was down to King Viserys‘ knack for making bad decisions, but he wasn’t the only Targaryen lacking judgment, and he won’t be the last, either.

HotD Season 2 will feature many more clusterf*cks, which will be pushed into overdrive by Aemond’s decision to scare the holy hell out of Luc before Vhagar went rogue and enjoyed a snack. This, of course, could lead to bad strategy moves from Queen Rhaenyra, but she surely cannot outdo King Aegon II in that department. After all, there’s a reason why George R.R. Martin called the show’s source material Fire and Blood, but we already know how the Targaryen bloodline ends. How does Season 2 help it get there?

Plot

The show has already slightly departed from GRRM’s writing by starting the timeline about 50% of the way through the Fire and Blood book. This leaves room for an Aegon The Conquerer show in the future, and it also drops us into the part of the Westeros history when sh*t really started to hit the fan. Following Luc’s death, Rhaenyra will be kicked into vengeance mode, and the story leaves Dragonstone and King’s Landing to focus more elsewhere. That includes more action of figures from Driftmark and more blanks filled in about The Stepstones, which are islands that formed following the flooding of a land strip. In the below video, GRRM is shown filling readers in with areas that we should see onscreen, and that includes parts of Old Valyria, Dorne, and various paths along the Narrow Sea.

Will we see Winterfell in Season 2 as well? This happens at a few points in the Fire and Blood book, but there’s no telling whether Season 2 will have room for too much Stark focus.

Essentially, the new season will set up several new lords and show lots of civilians having their lives destroyed by the silly yet devastating Targaryen war. Winter Is Coming did some detective work and found that a casting call for amputees in Wales could point toward the adaptation of scenes where those without the blood of the dragon were invited to tame beasts and join the war on Team Black. As you can guess from the description, some hopefuls lost life and limb in the process.

To be certain, Team Black will have enough dragons to outnumber those of Team Green, but Aegon’s side starts with the advantage of being in King’s Landing. As well, Green has the largest dragon, Vhagar, but she’s also clearly a loose cannon and not willing to always do Aemond’s bidding. And we also know that Game of Thrones began in a Westeros where dragons were all but extinct, so get ready for casualties of the human and fire-breathing variety.

Eventually, the show will leave us in a place where A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight begins, at least chronologically. However, GRRM has revealed that Hedge Knight is in development, so there’s no reason why both shows could run concurrently at some point.

Cast

The show settled into adult versions of several characters already, which means that Emma D’Arcy will be back as Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Olivia Cooke returns as her former friend-turned-nemesis, Alicent Hightower. As well, Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen) and Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon Targaryen) will keep bringing us the saltiest sons, and that’s especially the case for Aemond, who desperately wants to be like Matt Smith’s Daemon.

Steve Toussaint (Corlys “Sea Snake” Valaryon) will likely regain his strength, hopefully after recovering from that fever while accompanied by Eve Best as the Queen Who Never Was, Rhaenys Targaryen. Expect to see even more of these actors as non-Targaryens who are particularly adept at maneuvering: Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria/that White Worm) Fabien Frankel (Ser Criston Cole the terrible), and Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower).

What of new characters, though? Via Winter Is Coming, rumor has it that Lord Moogan (an ally to Rhaenyra) shall be portrayed by Turlough Convery, and the role of Cregan Stark will be picked up by Tom Taylor. Additionally, a surprisingly pivotal character — although this may or may not become apparent in Season 2 — will be Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin). She is a healer and a prolific wet nurse of Harrenhal, which is one of the first castles to head over to Team Black within the Fire and Blood book.

As well, key characters including Ser Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale), Ser Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox), and Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim) will do their part to help (and possibly harm) a divided kingdom in Season 2.

Release Date

Hollywood largely went into disarray throughout 2023, but the good news is that HotD stayed largely immune to the recent turmoil. Production continued without interruption in Europe with scripts already set in place before various strikes, and that all adds up to an early Summer 2024 debut for Season 2. At present, the show’s in post-production with CGI touches going into one of the more important parts of the series: those damn dragons. Without them, the Targaryens would simply be pretty people in questionable wigs, and no way would they have held onto the Iron Throne as long as they did. And we will see their fire again in a few months.

Trailer

We await an official trailer, just like you.

HBO’s first ‘House of the Dragon’ season can currently be streamed on Max.

Will There Be A ‘Bosch: Legacy’ Season 3?

Bosch
Amazon

The Bosch universe is taking a page out of Yellowstone’s book by quickly expanding, with not one but two new spinoffs in the works, on top of the already popular spinoff series Bosch: Legacy. That’s not even counting the two dozen Michael Connelly novels that Harry Bosch appears in, so we can bask in the Bosch for years to come.

Bosch: Legacy, which runs on Amazon Freevee, features Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch, a retired LAPD detective who now works as a private investigator. The series just wrapped up its second season with some loose ends, so there will definitely be a third season.

Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD originals, confirmed in May that the series would continue, taking inspiration from the many (many) Bosch novels. “The story of Harry Bosch has evolved over the years, and his journey is far from over. This renewal of Bosch: Legacy is a testament to the enduring power of the world Michael Connelly built. We look forward to giving Bosch fandom the next chapter for these beloved characters,” Anderson added.

In the season finale of Legacy, the late Lance Reddick appeared one last time, reprising his role of Irvin Irving. While we won’t get to see him appear in the upcoming season, we can all sleep easy knowing that he got to curse out Bosch one more time.

Chris Evans’ Dog Dodger Adorably Rescued Him From A Captain America Question On ‘The View’

Chris Evans dropped by The View on Monday morning where the actor was inevitably peppered with questions about the now infamous Variety exposé that, among other bombshell claims, reported that Marvel has been engaged in talks to “bring back the original gang for an ‘Avengers’ movie,” presumably Avengers: Secret Wars.

Like Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, Evans capped off his MCU tenure with Avengers: Endgame. He’s spoken about being reluctant to return to the role of Captain America, and he often makes it a point to note mention that Anthony Mackie’s Falcon is now the new Cap. However, this time around, Evans got a chance to defuse this latest batch of Marvel questions thanks to a furry assist from his dog Dodger.

Via Decider:

“You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me!” Before he could get in a few more words, he apologized to the Hot Topics panel, pivoting his camera to show the (very cute) interruption sitting beside him: his rescue dog.

“Sorry, this guy really wants some attention,” he said, revealing Dodger smiling below. Evans added, “He is trying so hard!”

While Evans made an attempt to answer the Cap question by saying “no one has spoken to me about it” and reiterating his previous stance that the story “would have to be just right,” the actor quickly put the focus back on Dodger. Look at this guy.

“It’s only when I start Zooms!” Evans said. “He doesn’t care! Until I start talking to the computer screen, then he needs to be the center of attention.”

Watch this 13-year-old dancer blow away the professional choreographer who danced with her

Humans may not always recognize greatness right away, but sometimes it’s so clear it simply can’t be denied.

You don’t have to be a dancer yourself to see when someone’s got moves, and a viral video from choreographer Phil Wright spotlights a kid who’s got moves. Like, wow.

Mariandrea Villegas may be tiny, but she packs a mighty amount of energy, skill, coordination and x-factor into her dancing. Oh and joy. Did I mention joy?

Villegas, 13, danced alongside choreographer Phil Wright at The Dance Awards and holy moly. She snatched the stage right out from under him.

“I think I got smoked,” he wrote when he shared the video on his Instagram page. “I need to stop dancing with these kids. 😂 They’re low-key superheroes.”

If Villegas is any evidence, he’s right. Watch:

Upworthy shared the video on Instagram as well, and people loved it.

“When you find your passion at a young age, it’s a beautiful thing to see,” wrote one commenter.

“And all with a smile on her face,” wrote another.

“This kid is an absolute star 🙌” shared another, echoing the sentiment of the copious fire emojis in the comments.

Keep on dancing with joy and passion, Mariandrea! We can’t wait to see more from you. (You can follow her on Instagram if you want to see what she’s done up to now. It’s impressive.)

Weird viral photo of Adele’s face exemplifies the phenomenon called the Thatcher effect

It seems that Adele is going viral once again.

Perhaps you’ve seen the image in question previously (it seems to make the rounds every couple of years). But in case you missed it—it’s Adele’s face. Normal, just upside down.

Only it’s not normal. In fact, when you turn Adele’s face right side up, what you notice is that her eyes and mouth were actually right-side up THE ENTIRE TIME, even though the entire head was upside down. So when you turn the head right side up, the eyes and mouth are now UPSIDE-DOWN—and you can’t unsee it. Do you feel like you’re Alice in Wonderland yet?

Just wait. Things get even more fascinating. Especially because this optical illusion is over 40 years in the making.

Below you’ll find the Adele photo in question. Go ahead. Take a look at it. Then turn the image upside down.

adele, thatcher effect, psychology

Crazy right? And just a little terrifying?

As the Facebook post explains, this mind-boggling image highlights a phenomenon known as the Thatcher effect. Our brains, so much more used to recognizing faces that are right-side up, have difficulty detecting specific changes once a face is upside down.

Seeing that everything is more or less where it should be, our brains don’t notice anything out of the ordinary in Adele’s face until we turn her face back to a normal position.

The Thatcher effect got its name from British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, on whose photograph it was first demonstrated back in 1980 by Peter Thompson, Professor of Psychology at York University.

This demonstration was one of the first to explore just how facial recognition works, and certainly the first to suggest that humans (and monkeys, it turns out) process faces on a more holistic level, rather than by individual components like lips and eyes. Since its publication, there has been a wealth of research exploring how our brain takes in both subtle and striking facial configurations.

Funny enough, it was once believed that this illusion only worked on the Prime Minister’s face. But as Adele has proven, anyone can be Thatcherized.

Folks are admitting that Boomers weren’t totally wrong. Here are 19 things they got right.

Over the past few years, Baby Boomers (1946 to 1964) have been getting a lot of grief from the generations that came after them, Gen X (1965 to 1980), Millenials (1981 to 1996), and now, Gen Z (1997 to 2012). Their grievances include environmental destruction, wealth hoarding, political polarization, and being judgemental when they don’t understand how hard it is for younger people to make it in America these days.

Every Baby Boomer is different, so it’s wrong to paint them all with a broad brush. But it’s undeniable that each generation shares common values, and some are bound to come into conflict.

However, life in 2023 isn’t without its annoyances. Many that came about after the technological revolution put a phone in everyone’s hands and brought a whole new host of problems. Add the younger generations’ hands-on approach to child rearing and penchant for outrage, and a lot of moden life has become insufferanble.

These problems weren’t created by Boomers but by their hyper-online children and grandchildren who can’t seem to get their faces out of their phones.

A Reddit user named AnitaVodkasoda took to the AskReddit forum and asked posters to admit there were some things that Boomers got right. “What is something you can say ‘I’m with the boomers on this one’ about?” they asked, and many responses came from people fed up with the modern-day frustrations caused by technology and social media.

Here are 19 things that people think that Boomers got right.

1. App exhaustion

“Any business which requires you to use an app. I don’t want to download an app, make an account, and remember said password for the account. Especially because the app doesn’t even work a lot of the time or is extremely convoluted with the frontend design.” — Sammy_Henderschplitz

2. Let kids play

“Kids do great with totally unstructured outdoor play. They don’t need an organized game or activity. If you take a bunch of kids to a park and keep an eye on them they’ll figure out stuff to do together and often come up with creative and interesting things that adults wouldn’t have thought of. Just keep them physically safe and let them run around and do kid stuff. You don’t need to curate everything.” — HeavyHebrewHammer

3. Pricey concerts

“Concert ticket pricing is too high. Once you get in a beer is $17!” — Whatabout-Dre

4. Tip creep

“Every business asking for tips at checkout. Digital menus. Not being able to own things anymore like software or having to pay monthly fees for car features.” — mutualbuttsqueezin

5. Phones at concerts

“Phones at concerts. I take one pic when the artist comes on and then I just enjoy the show. You’re never gonna look back at your sh**** videos with you singing off-key in the background lol just enjoy the music.” — Used_Eraser

6. Kids online

“Social media is unhealthy and children shouldn’t have unrestricted access to the internet.” — horrorflowers

7. Lazy tablet parents

“Parents who let their kids use tablets in public spaces with the volume all the way up, no headphones, and not doing it to stop an imminent tantrum (if they truly cannot get the kid out of that shared space for some reason) are trashy af. Fight me.” — kishbish

8. Bring back knobs

“Touchscreens in cars suck.” — sketchy_painting

9. Bad customer service

“Calling any business and getting an automated system that takes you 12 minutes to get through, doesn’t answer your question, and you can’t get a real person.” — SexyJesus7

10. Raising entitled kids

“The ‘my kid is never wrong’ attitude every parent seems to have now. And we wonder why there’s a teacher shortage.” — Cinderjacket

11. Emojis in work emails

“Learn to write a professional email. The number of Gen Z kids I’ve had who send me emails without salutations, with emojis and shorthand like lol omg etc, without proper spelling and punctuation, is crazy. That is fine for texting or exchanges with people you’re friends with, but it’s not for the workplace.” — pistachiobees

12. Paper straws

“Paper straws suck.” — JohnYCanuckEsq

13. Face tattoos

“Don’t get tattoos on your face.” — Disastrous-Aspect569

14. Gender reveals

“Just tell us if you are having a boy or girl. Or wait until the baby is born. We don’t need to assemble for some ridiculous reveal. I don’t want pink or blue dust all over the place.” — Kevin Dean

15. People are too sensitive

“I think people tend to be too sensitive, personal outrage shouldn’t be so important. It’s disheartening to see so many people whine and cry and fight over inconsequential nonsense while pressing issues remain unaddressed.” — Empathetic_Orch

16. TV sounds terrible

“Movies, and some TV shows for that matter, are mixed idiotically these days. I don’t appreciate having to crank the volume way up to hear the whispered dialog, only to have a music swell or explosion or something blow my head clean off. No amount of tweaking my sound system has fixed this.” — broberds

17. Affordable housing

“Being able to afford a house.” — The-Black-Douglas

18. Blinded by the lights

“Headlights are too damned bright now.” — 15all

19. The people on your lawn

“Get off my lawn.” — Disastrous_Motor_189

Real Estate Deliver A Nostalgic Gift To ‘The Adventures Of Pete & Pete’ Fans (With Pete And Pete Themselves) Via Their ‘Water Underground’ Video

Real Estate was one of the premier indie rock groups of the 2010s, and they started the current decade strong with their 2020 album The Main Thing. Now they’re keeping it rolling: Today (November 27), the band announced Daniel, their sixth album. The 11-track LP is set for February 23, 2024.

They also shared a video for breezy lead single “Water Underground” and it’s a lot of fun, especially if you’re a ’90s Nickelodeon fan. The clip is inspired by the classic show The Adventures Of Pete & Pete and even stars the program’s Danny Tamberelli and Michael C. Maronna.

Real Estate singer Martin Courtney says of the song, “This song is about writing songs. I think ‘Water Underground’ is like the unconscious, the mysterious part of your brain where creativity comes from. The constant flow of music in the back of your head. You get an idea while driving or walking the dog or something and you want to hold on to it.”

Tamberelli also noted, “New Jersey roots are hard to break. Julian [lynch, guitar], Alex [Bleeker, bass and vocals], and Martin all grew up one town away from me and were actually friends with the younger siblings of my friends from Ridgewood. They told me they even saw me perform at the local bandshell with some of those older siblings while I was in high school. The video brings it full circle and adding my dear old friends from the show into the fold really tied it all together.”

Watch the “Water Underground” video above. Below, find the Daniel cover art and tracklist, along with Real Estate’s 2024 tour dates.

Did Beyoncé Direct The ‘Renaissance’ Movie?

beyonce
Getty Image

This weekend, Beyoncé’s concert film, Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé, premiered in Los Angeles with a star-studded event attended by a who’s-who of today’s biggest names in music. While the film itself is set to hit theaters on December 1, you can probably expect to learn more about the movie this week, whenever any embargoes are lifted by Parkwood Entertainment.

However, there are a few things we already know. Thanks to the film’s trailer we know that there will be some behind-the-scenes footage, as well as those long-awaited music videos. And thanks to the film’s marketing we know who directed it: Beyoncé herself, along with James B. Merryman and Mark Ritchie, adding another hyphen to her long list of talents.

One of the other takeaways from the film’s premiere was how her daughter, Blue Ivy, improved her stage presence after seeing some negative comments online. As it happens, the 11-year-old was only supposed to appear at one tour stop after finagling a concession from her perfectionist mom, but once she had something to prove, she trained hard for future appearances.

Meanwhile, Beyoncé fans couldn’t help but speculate about which moments from the singer’s massive Renaissance World Tour made it into the film, sharing predictions via social media ranging from inspired to downright silly.
