‘The Chi’: They Go From ‘Boys II Men’ So Fast In Season 6, Episode 6

(WARNING: Spoilers for the most recent The Chi episode will be found below.)

The highs and lows of The Chi are felt heavily in this week’s episode. In episode six of season six, the kids of the South Side are preparing for graduation. We see glorious moments throughout the episode attached to this moment. Whether it be graduation pictures or coming together for graduation or Kevin’s speech to his class, it’s a moment that the kids deserved and should be able to celebrate in peace — and celebrate they do. Kevin, Maisha, Jake, Jemma, Lynae, and Papa as well as Bakari all come together for party towards the end of the episode. It’s one of the last moments they’ll all be together as Kevin has his eyes set on a move to Los Angeles to pursue his video game dreams.

Just like all things in The Chi, we know that the good times can’t last forever. Bakari feels the wrath of his streets after Douda retaliates against him for losing the stolen Lambo he let him use for prom. A bright moment for him comes when he reconnects with his sister Britney for the first time in years. Britney also makes a nice impression on the gang, mostly with Jemma, thanks to a dope freestyle over Lupe Fiasco’s “Kick Push.” Then we have Papa who is at odds with his family over his decision to stay with Kenya despite learning that she has a son. Pastor Jackson forbids Papa from dating Kenya, but Papa says he can’t stop him and walks out of the house. Their last argument seems to truly be their last as it appears that Pastor Jackson is choked to death by someone we assume is an associate of Douda while Papa hangs out at the post-graduation party.

Elsewhere, Victor has to make a decision on what to do in regards to his involvement in Q’s murder as an FBI investigation into it heats up. Emmett makes a move to free himself from Douda, but it results in him getting pistol whipped and threatened, though he’s able to work something out. Victor tells Rob the truth about Q’s death and he now has to figure out how to handle it in order to fulfill his mother’s wishes and get the money for her for he and Tiffany’s marijuana’s business. Jemma and her father continue arguments about her future and Bakari and Lynae’s relationship is at risk after their run in with police.

Here are some of the biggest takeaways that we have after season six’s sixth episode, “Boys II Men”:

There’s No Fighting Or Running From The Streets

One of the themes in “Boys II Men” is a reminder that running or fighting the streets isn’t easy. We see it with three characters in this episode: Emmett, Victor, and Bakari. Emmett reaches his limit with Douda once he realizes that he’s put his family at risk by working with the crime boss. He retrieves his gun from his dad and heads to Douda to threaten him into breaking ties with him, but Douda isn’t fazed by it as he takes the gun back and pistol whips Emmett. Victor has his past catch up to him when the FBI approaches him about a murder they believe he and Douda are connected to, and rightfully so. He’s left to decide whether or not to confess to the crime and risk everything he’s worked for. Lastly, Bakari faces the aftermath of being pulled over in Douda’s stolen Lamborghini. He’s not allowed to see Lynae, who was in the car with him, he’s brutally punched in the eye by Douda, and he’s caught in the middle of a battle between Douda and Victor and Pastor Jackson.

All cases prove that once connected, it’s hard to outrun or fight the negative of the streets. Victor thought he could with a career in politics, but he now sees that it’s not the case as it’s all caught up to him. Emmett hoped to only deal with Douda’s business side, but that’s not the case as he now sees. Bakari simply wants to make money for himself and be steady with Lynae, but with his connection to Douda, it appears that he can’t have both.

Bakari Really Cares About Lynae

From the moment Bakari laid eyes on Lynae, it’s been clear that his feelings for her have been everything but small. In episode six of this season, we get a closer look at how deep these feelings are. During a car ride with her older brother Jamal, Bakari learns that his relationship with her is at risk. Bakari says he’ll be more careful with her “next time” and Jamal questions why he believes there will be a next time. This leaves Bakari to wonder if Lynae wants to see him again, to which Jamal advises that it’s best if they take a little break. Things seem to be okay later on when Lynae introduces herself to Britney as “Bakari’s girlfriend.” However, in that car ride with Jamal, Bakari puts his tough guy act to the side to show his feelings for Lynae, saying, “she’s all I have to live for.” Without much family around him, Bakari currently lives for a future with Lynae. It’s what keeps him focused on staying out of trouble and more. It’s dangerous being this dependent on someone, but for Bakari, who previously spent time in a foster home, he’s always been independent so a break from it is something he enjoys and doesn’t want to let go of — especially when the love is reciprocated.

Kevin And Papa Simply Want Freedom

Kevin and Papa are both in an up-and-down relationship with their respective parents. Kevin’s lasted a bit longer and resulted in him moving out into his own apartment. Papa’s is more recent as he’s expressed his frustration with his father’s helicopter parenting style. Kevin shared his decision to move to LA to pursue his video game dreams with his mom and stepmom and his mother Nina isn’t thrilled about the move. Being that he’s her youngest, it makes sense that her emotions are all over the place when she hears the news, but at the end of the day, Kevin just wants her to support his dreams and his independence, the latter being something that’s led to numerous rifts between Kevin and Nina.

As for Papa, he’s grown tired of his father’s helicopter parenting style and the tipping point comes when Papa accidentally reveals that Kenya is not only his girl, but that she also has a son. That news leads to Pastor Jackson forbidding his son from being around her. Papa refuses to listen and it eventually leads to him walking out of his family’s house to his father’s disapproval. At the end of the day, the two just want the freedom to go through life as regular kids, free to make mistakes that won’t ruin their lives, but instead, will allow them to gain a new perspective.

Douda Went Too Far And He’ll Learn That Emmett Was Right

As up and down as “Boys II Men” already was, the episode ends on a shocking note. As Pastor Jackson prays for guidance from God in his kitchen, he’s seemingly choked to death as a masked man enters the house and ties a rope around his neck. We can assume that Douda is behind it as he instructed Nuk to “take care of him” back in episode four. Earlier in the episode, long before this happened, Emmett made a great point to Douda. While Emmett is loved in the community, people only work for Douda, so the army that would be willing to fight for Douda, without being forced to, will be smaller than the army willing to fight for Emmett. Now, thanks to Pastor Jackson’s death, Douda might see how difficult things will get for him. He’s had his way previously, but that won’t be the case this time around. They love Emmett in Chicago, and they loved Pastor Jackson there as well. The same can’t be said for Douda, and he’s about to feel it more than ever.

‘The Chi’: Here’s The Music You Heard In Season 6, Episode 6

(WARNING: Spoilers for this week’s The Chi episode will be found below.)

The sixth episode in The Chi season six was supposed to be a joyful one. The kids of Chicago’s south side have reached the end of their high school careers and they’re preparing for graduation. With this, come big life decisions for everyone. Kevin is leaning toward a video gaming gig in Los Angeles, which means he must inform not only his mom but also his girlfriend Maisha about it. Bakari reconnects with his sister and Papa finds happiness with a new surprise in his relationship with Kenya. As with everything in The Chi, things aren’t always peachy and rosy in Chicago.

Keisha discovered the bag of money that Douda and Nuk forced Emmett to hide at his home and that turned out to be a breaking point for him as he tried to force his way out of his deal with Douda. That didn’t work out too well for him, and the same could be said about Bakari in the aftermath of his arrest for driving with a stolen car. Victor is being investigated for Q’s murder and he has to decide whether or not to confess to his involvement in the crime. Additionally, Marcus and Jemma’s disagreements continue, but none of the above makes for the worst thing that happened in this episode.

Papa’s father is seemingly dead after he was killed by someone we can assume is an associate of Douda.

The events mentioned above in the sixth episode of Showtime’s The Chi season six, titled “Boys II Men,” are soundtracked by songs that help to accentuate the emotions behind each scene. You can find a list of them below and details about the scenes the records played behind.

The following records were provided thanks to the Showtime Entertainment Public Relations team. Some records are unreleased and will not be on streaming until a later date. Check back for updates on a release.

Preston — “Pressure”

We hear this record around the 6:20 mark as Kevin, Maisha, Jake, Jemma, Lynae, and Papa prepare to take pictures for graduation. They’re all a bit antsy as they wait in line for the photos. Lynae talks about still being on punishment and wanting to move out, Kevin says to be careful what you wish for, Papa is stressing about his photos, and Maisha shows them how it’s done.

Crown — “Wild Bill”

This song plays around the 8:05 mark as Douda punches Bakari in the face for losing the stolen Lamborghini that he allowed him to drive for prom. Douda also consults with Nuk about figuring out a way to wash their money. He learns that Pastor Jackson is the one making things difficult for them.

J Doe — “Need Some Prayer”

Around the 15:15 mark, this record plays as Jamal pulls up in a truck to see Bakari at the door of Nina’s house where Lynae is staying. Bakari apologized to Nina for putting her in harm’s way and he later explained to Jamal how he got a black eye. Jamal then offers Bakari a ride home.

Stix — “Prayer”

This record can be heard around the 23:21 mark as Jamal and Bakari continue their drive. Jamal warns Bakari about his street life and how being in jail will affect him if he continues down this path. Jamal also suggests that Bakari take some time apart from Lynae after the stolen car incident.

Kieran The Light — “No Pressure”

We hear this record around the 28:15 mark as Jamal and Bakari arrive at Papa’s house where the latter has been staying. It’s there that they see Bakari’s sister sitting on the steps. Bakari and his sister Britney were split up into separate foster homes and lost touch with each other over the years.

Rukus — “Spin The Block”

This song plays around the 29:00 mark as Bakari and Britney catch up with each other. Britney reveals that she’s no longer hustling in the streets and is instead, focusing on her music career to accomplish her dreams. She asks if she can stay with Bakari, but he says that the decision isn’t up to him as it’s not his house. They exchange contacts to stay in touch.

EMAN8 — “Inspired”

EMAN8’s record plays around the 48:58 mark as Kevin, Maisha, Jake, Jemma, Lynae, and Papa take their seats in an auditorium to begin graduation. Before things kick off, Douda comes in to have Bakari come with him but Victor and Pastor Jackson tell Douda that Bakari isn’t going anywhere.

Durand The Rapper — “Forever Kings”

Around the 52:10 mark, this song plays as Kevin concludes his graduation speech to his classmates. He revealed his plans to go to Los Angeles to chase his video game dreams and he encouraged his classmates to pursue their own goals, no matter how big or small they are.

Lupe Fiasco — “Kick Push”

This record can be heard around the 54:34 mark at a party that Kevin, Maisha, Jake, Jemma, Lynae, Bakari, Britney, and Papa attend after graduation. It’s here that Lynae meets Britney for the first time and that Britney learns that Bakari has a girlfriend.

Amari Noelle aka Britney — “At It Again (“Kick Push” Freestyle)

We hear this record around the 55:35 mark as Britney, played by real-life artist Amari Noelle, takes over the mic to freestyle over “Kick Push.” Everyone is blown away, though Maisha seems to be a bit jealous as it’s been a while since her raps have brought her the applause that Britney received.

Alonda Rich — “Hypebeast”

This song plays around the 56:30 mark after Britney’s freestyle. Jemma approaches her about managing her, but Britney says her main concern at the moment is finding a place to crash. Jemma says she isn’t able to help there but tells Britney to find her when she’s ready to have someone manage her.

Travon Potts — “Dry My Tears”

Travon Potts’ record can be heard around the 57:26 mark as Pastor Jackson prays for guidance from God and asks for his son to be protected. Just as he concludes this prayer, a man comes up behind him with a rope and seemingly chokes him to death as we’re left to watch him lay on the ground unresponsive.

Young Nudy’s ‘Peaches & Eggplants’ Remix With Sexyy Red And Latto Has A Saucier, Feminine Edge

Young Nudy’s “Peaches & Eggplants” was one of this summer’s more randy hits. Tonight (September 8), the East Atlanta rapper has dropped an even saucier remix, featuring two of the leading ladies in the rap game right now.

Joined by Sexyy Red and Latto, Nudy’s hit single now has a more feminine-empowering edge to it. And believe us, these ladies don’t hold back.

The St. Louis newcomer, who has been giving us hit-after-hit these past few months, sets the tone for the song, delivering scandalous lines not for the faint of heart.

“Hit from the back, rip off my tracks / Grip on my booty, you know that it’s fat / Hoes stay tweakin’, lil’ b*tch, relax,” raps Red on her verse. These are probably the most printable lyrics, and her fiery bars make her breakthrough single “Pound Town” sound like a playground song.

Equally as raunchy is Latto’s verse. And while we can’t share much of her lines, this is a continuation of a high-quality feature run that the fellow ATL rapper has been giving us all summer.

“He wanna know if it’s real or it’s fake / I got a peach on the back like a plate / I got him eatin’ my booty on tape,” raps Latto

You can listen to the “Peaches And Eggplants” remix above.

Olivia Rodrigo Proudly Owns The Title Of An ‘All-American B*tch’ On Her New Song

At long last, Olivia Rodrigo has made her much-anticipated return. Tonight (September 8), Rodrigo has shared her sophomore album, Guts. With Guts, Rodrigo deals with typical 20-something problems, while grappling with newfound fame and notoriety. From the very beginning of the album, she reminds us that she is unapologetic in her self-empowering ways.

Guts opens with “All-American B*tch,” which features Rodrigo addressing criticisms and defying the boxes in which the public has tried to place her.

“I am built like a mother and a total machine / I feel for your every little issue, I know just what you mean / And I make light of the darkness / I’ve got sun in my motherf*ckin’ pocket / Best believe, yeah, you know me,” sings Rodrigo on the song’s opening verse.

In a recent conversation with Phoebe Bridgers for Interview Magazine, Rodrigo revealed that this particular song was inspired by a portion of Joan Didion’s book, The White Album.

“I was reading this bit about her going to San Francisco to meet all these hippies—5-year-olds were dropping acid and going to Grateful Dead concerts. She was talking to some hippie who ran away from home and he called his mom an all-American b*tch,” said Rodrigo. “And I was like, ‘That’s the f*cking coolest phrase I’ve ever heard,’ so I had to write a song about it.”

You can listen to “All-American B*tch” above”

Guts is out now via Geffen. Find more information here.

Mom’s real world budgeting lesson goes viral after it leaves her kids feeling overwhelmed

Kids, as much as we love them, they’re like our little broke best friends. They seemingly always want something and have little to no concept on how much money things cost.

There are some parents that start explaining how finances and budgeting works at an early age so kids know what to expect. It also likely helps them understand that parents don’t have an infinite amount of money to spend on unnecessary items. Ariel B. is a mom and content creator that created budgeting worksheets for her children to use to learn how to budget and uploaded the video to TikTok.

Let’s just say, the kids were a bit stressed before they even finished the worksheet.

The mom of four gathered her children around the table with budgeting worksheets and a $3,000 imaginary budget, which is based off of a $15 minimum wage plus an additional $500. Ariel explained the average cost of rent in their area and instructed her kids to look up the average cost for utilities in an apartment.

“How long are you leaving your lights on,” one of her daughters asks. To which Ariel responds, “well, all of our lights are on in here and you don’t seem to mind.”

At one point in the video, they’re discussing a food budget when one of her children says he will eat take out daily. Reality quickly set in when Ariel encouraged them to crunch some numbers.

“That’s too much money, actually,” the younger daughter exclaims. “I just won’t eat lunch. I’ll just eat a big breakfast. I probably won’t eat breakfast.”

In another video, one of the children is appalled that they would be expected to pay first and last month’s rent when moving into an apartment. The older daughter is simply flabbergasted at the lack of available money.

“I have nothing. I have no money at all. And I don’t know what to do about it,” the girl says. I cut all of my ones and I’m already on a bike. Like I don’t know what to do. Like what else can I do?”

Oh, little ones, welcome to Adulting 101. These kids are likely thanking all of the stars in the sky that this was just an imaginary situation and not something they need to worry about for a long time.
