Chlöe Reminded Us Of Her Unstoppable Star Power During Her Debut Solo Tiny Desk Concert

Chloe Bailey is killing it in her solo era. This year, she released her debut album In Pieces and embarked on a solo tour. She and her sister, Halle, also released a line of activewear, and they teased that they will be hitting the studio to work on their third studio album as Chloe X Halle.

Today (September 5), Tiny Desk has dropped a special performance featuring Chloe Bailey, who performs solo as Chlöe.

During her Tiny Desk debut, Chlöe performed with an acoustic band, delivering some of her solo cuts.

She opened with “Surprise,” her sexy standalone single from 2022. She made a slight nod to Janet Jackson shortly after, saying “My name is Chlöe, Miss Bailey if you nasty,” making a smooth transition into the In Pieces fan favorite, “Body Do.”

Continuing with her momentum, she then performed “I Don’t Mind.” She slowed it down a bit with the performances on “In Pieces,” the title track from her solo debut album, which was co-written with Mikky Ekko.

While both of the Bailey sisters can guarantee us solid albums, their live performances always prove to be worth a watch. The work they put into their performances is unmatched by their peers, and promises longevity in the years to come.

Beyoncé Knows Exactly What We Need

The shimmering of SoFi Stadium was practically blinding.

It started with a seemingly simple request from someone who doesn’t usually ask for much. As Leo season concluded and Virgo season commenced, Beyoncé made a rare Instagram post asking that fans coming to her upcoming shows wear their “most fabulous silver fashions” to grant her a birthday wish. And suddenly, it didn’t matter that tickets were hard to get or that many fans had been waiting years for Beyoncé to roll back through town.

Folks by the tens of thousands took to Etsy, thrift stores, designer boutiques, and their parents’ closets to find something to fit the bill, to sparkle and shine in Beyoncé’s presence. Even the most casual of dude threw on some grey jeans or a charcoal shirt. At worst, as acclaimed writer Roxane Gay noted, it was a slight annoyance. But for the vast majority of eager participants, it was a chance to take an already special occasion and turn it into the kind of collective experience that is both exceedingly rare in contemporary life and increasingly successful when executed on a massive scale. From Barbenheimer to the Eras Tour, life in 2023 feels more vivid and vibrant when you are experiencing it en masse with others. And at the Renaissance Tour during Beyoncé’s birth season, that moment was bathed in chrome.

It made for fun people watching, as mirror ball-reflective cowboy hats and glittery body paint and retro suits and sequin dresses gathered in the state-of-the-art football stadium. It was enough for Beyoncé to beam with joy as she made her way through the set’s relatively relaxed opening numbers. She commented on how amazing those in the front looked with their distinct silver fits, smiling wide that so many had answered the call. And while the fans could feel content that they had granted Beyoncé’s “B-Day” request, the truth is that Beyoncé knew exactly what the fans needed to take an already monumental tour to the next level. It further cemented the sense of community, giving those in attendance a sort of uniform as Beyoncé supporters. And hell, it just looked really cool.

This is a defining trait of Beyoncé, an artist who displays pristine intentionality in everything she touches. While her evolution from standout girl-group member to generational musical force has developed over the decades, her choices keep finding the Venn diagram of what is right for Beyoncé and what her fans need looking more and more like a perfect circle. There was her 2013 Super Bowl triumph and adventurous return three years later; the surprise self-titled album release; the shift to more nuanced capital-A Art on Lemonade and its accompanying movie, a Coachella appearance that redefined what a festival set can be; and then, coming out of the pandemic, an album that pushed people out of their homes and into the shared spaces that felt like they might never return to. She’s a chessmaster thinking multiple moves ahead, giving fans exactly what they need and allowing them to feel like they are giving it right back.

Kevin Mazur

But as much as fans did give it back to Beyoncé, it still always feels like a candle compared to a sun when in her presence. For nearly three hours on Friday night, she danced, sang, and presented an engrossing spectacle centered around her latest album. There were moments that felt specifically centered around Blackness, others that focused on femininity, and still others that honored the queer dance culture that heavily influenced the sound of the record. She provided her fans an in-person glimpse at the status of her first foray into motherhood as daughter Blue Ivy showcased the performer’s DNA that runs through her blood by dancing during “MY POWER.” She gave a rare opening set from DJ Khaled, who in turn paraded out a steady stream of rap royalty, including Coi Leray, Offset, 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, Roddy Ricch, and an abbreviated Lil Wayne, who unfortunately had microphone delay issues. And with her actual birthday falling on the last of her SoFi stops, Los Angeles got a special treat with the return of “The Big 3” as Beyoncé returned “THIQUE,” “ALL UP IN YOUR MIND,” and “Drunk In Love” to the setlist for only the third time on tour, while the actual birthday show on Monday saw appearances from Diana Ross and Kendrick Lamar.

Los Angeles might not have nailed the on-mute-moment during “ENERGY,” but they certainly were up for the key changes of the “Love On Top” singalong. Still, an element of the concert felt like Beyoncé preparing fans for the future. Beyoncé turned 42 yesterday, and while her time as a dancing, stadium-selling artist is far from over, she also proved that if she ever went the Adele route, she’s more than equipped to let her vocals be the star. The whole first portion of her set is geared around this, as she simply stands and sings and basks in the glory of the moment. Later in the set, she appears inside a giant sea shell that feels directly ripped from the Vegas crooners of yesteryear. If she ever does fully pivot in this direction, it will be for an audience that is aging with her.

But for now, Beyoncé is still proving that she can do it all, enrapturing millions of fans across continents with a massive show. She knows she can elicit screams by interpolating a tiny bit of “Say My Name” within “VIRGO’S GROOVE” or can bring chills to tens of thousands by simply saying “Los Angeles” in her unmistakeble, husky speaking voice. She knows she has an ace in her back pocket if and when she decides to release the visuals fans have been clamoring for. She’s a master for walking that tightrope of knowing the right amount of music, merch, and content to keep fans both satisfied and wanting more. The trust that people put in Beyoncé is well-earned, and was never more tangible than in the sparkling reflective color scheme across SoFi Stadium. Beyoncé asked for a gift, only so she could give one right back.

Zach Bryan And Kacey Musgraves Both Earned Their First No. 1 With Their ‘I Remember Everything’ Collab

Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves have a lot to be excited about today, as their recent collaboration “I Remember Everything” has reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. This marks the first time that either artist has reached this feat.

The emotional duet centers around two exes reflecting on the mistakes that led to their ultimate breakup. “I wish I didn’t, but I do / Remember every moment on the nights with you,” he sings — as one of the specific lyrics that has crossed over on TikTok. It also appears on Bryan’s recently-released self-titled album, which also debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 Albums chart.

“Some of them are heavy, some of them are hopeful,” Bryan shared about the album, according to Euphoria Magazine. “More than anything, what’s most important to me is that they’re all mine. If people listen to it, I’ll be grateful. If people don’t, I’ll still be grateful because I got the chance in this life to be original when it mattered.”

“I wrote and produced an album that I would want to listen to,” he added. “I self-titled it because I hear every cell of my being in it. Some of it’s slow and low, some of it’s reckless, some of it’s loud, some of it’s quiet, but it’s all me at twenty-seven.”

‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ Is A ‘Big A** Kicker’ That Brings AMC’s Undead Franchise Home

AMC’s The Walking Dead franchise spinoffs — thus far with Dead City giving us a back-to-basics team-up of Negan and Maggie — are off to a rousing start. Part of that appeal is the focus on solo-ish missions of fan-favorites and leaving behind a sprawling structure and an ensemble cast with a revolving door. The overstuffed nature of those final seasons was perhaps inevitable after the departure of core characters like Rick Grimes and Michonne. The series finale, fortunately, tied itself together with Rosita’s death, which sent the flagship show into the sunset with heart. And Daryl Dixon hopped on his motorcycle and zoomed into the distance to go, where, exactly? He had no idea, and that’s the perfect way to help this franchise find its way home.

Daryl is, quite simply, the mainstay of this franchise. Even when he lived solo in the woods, the show made this happen during a time jump, so we didn’t have to miss Norman Reedus and his crossbow. He is, as I recently wrote while recommending the “Still” episode as an essential Daryl rewatch, also the character who I’d most like to have my back. That isn’t to say that there aren’t other badasses to choose from. Carol’s a pretty close contender, and Michonne can slay Walkers like it ain’t no thing, but she’s also prone to running off and abandoning all responsibilities while looking for Dumbass Rick. Speaking of which, I’m still looking forward to that Rick and Michonne spinoff, and I will riot if there aren’t at least two instances of Rick doing something stupid on a horse and Michonne saving his ass.

We are here today, however, to talk about Daryl Dixon, the only “solo” spinoff. Yes, there have been rumors of an appearance from another key character, and no way in hell will I spoil what happens there, but this is by-and-large Daryl’s story. We find out more about his background, and yes, we do find out how he mysteriously washes ashore in France without knowing how he got there. He aims to fight his way home, a seemingly impossible task, over six episodes, and AMC is already shooting a second season in France. So, you can guess that this is not a conveniently tied-up tale, which is excellent news.

Also promising? This badass-slash-softie, who graced Judith Grimes with the “Lil’ Ass Kicker” nickname, is living up to the “Big Ass Kicker” label that she gave him in return. He’s got no choice. Does Daryl ever get tired and want to visit Nap City? We might never know because the spinoff keeps him busy.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
AMC

Let’s just say that Walkers have both evolved and devolved in France. We saw some hints of variants in Dead City, but there are apparently several variants in France. We don’t get to see all of them in this handful of episodes, but there’s one “advancement” that knocks Daryl for a loop shortly after arrival.

Beyond the meat-and-potatoes stuff — the gore and heavy action — this is a fitting Daryl character study, too. Obviously, he is the least likely character that you’d ever expect to go on a European “vacation.” He even mentioned in the “Still” episode that he’d never left Georgia (at that point) or been on vacation. He’s the ultimate survivor and incredibly industrious, but France kind-of f*cks up his sh*t at first, yet not for long. He also doesn’t have a religious bone in his “hillbilly” body, something that always reminds me of Rick wondering if they should bring Paul Rovia home and Daryl dismissively remarking, “Nah, guy calls himself Jesus.”

So, there are a number of adjustments for Daryl, and that’s part of the fun. He never does lose track of his desire to return back home to his “family,” but he must first hook up with unlikely allies. And they recognize in him a purpose that takes him on detours, and most of these involve nuns and religious groups, which only amps up the raging irony of this show. Deadpan Daryl gets through it all with (mostly) seriousness, which only makes the playful tone more enjoyable. Dude cannot speak French, he has no idea how to convincingly pray, and perhaps worst of all, he has no motorcycle. He is, in every way, out of his element. This is high dramedy, y’all, and I mean that in the best way.

The new venue also puts a visually stunning stamp on the franchise, and unlike with the claustrophobic atmosphere of Dead City, we get to see survivors navigate everywhere from the quaint French countryside to the devastation of Paris and beyond. Several key scenes take place at iconic locations far beyond the Eiffel Tower, so there’s no taking the lazy “tourist” way out in this series. We also get to see how the apocalypse unfolded in the City of Light, where Isabelle (Clémence Poésy) lived a very different life before becoming a nun. Her history is surprisingly fleshed out, and we get to know a handful of characters, some of whom I’d expect to see in the next season.

The most appealing part of this spinoff — beyond the obligatory Big Ass Kicking — is that we do get to know Daryl even better than during the course of eleven prior seasons. Yes, we saw him sporadically open up throughout The Walking Dead, and those moments (as in “Cherokee Rose”) tended to hit hard. We received tastes of how he interacted with individuals — Merle, Carol, Beth, Rick, Leah, and Dog — and we learned that this loner will open up to those who slowly earn it. Yet in France, he doesn’t have the luxury of time here. He can’t compartmentalize while he adapts. Daryl’s judgment ends up being a life-and-death compass, and that keeps the adrenaline flowing.

Ultimately, this spinoff will please Daryl fans to no end. Yes, the show is at times as silly as a Daryl In Paris adventure, but Daryl also allows the audience inside of him to a degree that we haven’t seen before now. And he morphs yet never loses his essence or abandons his own values in any way. It’s a fascinating shift, and Norman Reedus made a few people chuckle when he called this spinoff “art,” yet sure, I’ll agree with that. It’s a Portrait Of A Crossbow Artist As A Big Ass Kicker, and like Daryl, it will not let you down.

‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ will ride on September 10. On a related note, ‘Ride With Norman Reedus’ will return with Keanu Reeves on the same night.

Maya Hawke Razzed Her Famous Father For His Unsuccessful Attempt At Flirting With Rihanna

Don’t you hate it when your dad gets caught flirting with Rihanna while sitting courtside at a New York Knicks game? We’ve all been there.

Or at least Maya Hawke has.

The Stranger Things actress and look-alike daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke teased her famous father over his public pursuit of the pop star. “I’ve been caught by the paparazzi openly flirting with Rihanna,” Ethan said in an interview with Variety, to which Maya replied, “Openly trying to.”

Maya, who called her family “the boring, indie Kardashians,” and Ethan also discussed the conversation surrounding nepo babies. “I had moments of insecurity about it while we were shooting the movie,” Maya said about her new film, the Flannery O’Connor biopic Wildcat, which was directed by and co-written by Ethan. (The Hawkes were allowed to do press during the SAG-AFTRA strike because exceptions are made for some indie projects.) “But the internet doesn’t have a lot of nuances. My dad has been a massive teacher for me, and we want to work together. We like being with each other.”

Ethan added, “If someone wants to criticize us for working together, that’s totally fair. You have to let people have their opinion. You just have to try to do a good job when you’re onstage.” Or when you’re flirting with Rihanna.

Wildcat, which premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival, does not have a release date yet.

Olivia Rodrigo And Phoebe Bridgers Made Their ‘F*ck, Marry, Kill’ Picks For Writing, Recording, And Touring

We are just days away from Olivia Rodrigo‘s sophomore album, Guts. Ahead of the album, the “Bad Idea, Right?” hitmaker sat down for a conversation with indie darling Phoebe Bridgers for Interview Magazine.

During their conversation, the two ladies played a game of “f*ck, marry, kill,” in which, the subjects were writing, touring, and recording.

“Marry writing, f*ck recording, and kill touring, unfortunately,” said Rodrigo.

Bridgers also opted to kill touring, however, switched around what she would do with writing and recording.

“I want to marry recording because it’s the only time I ever feel like I have a consistent job,” said Bridgers. “And writing for me is a very f*ckable relationship because I hate it and love it.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Rodrigo reiterated that while she does enjoy seeing fans while on tour, she’s still learning how to find a balance between her home life and her tour life.

“I feel so lucky that I get to tour,” said Rodrigo. “I’m in such disbelief that people want to come and see me play my little songs. But it’s really difficult to go for long periods of time. I’m still figuring out how to do it all and what that looks like for me.”

Mikal Bridges And Tyrese Haliburton Led Team USA To A Dominant Quarterfinals Win Over Italy

Two days after losing to Lithuania in the final game of the second group stage, USA Basketball bounced back in a big way in the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIBA World Cup, as they blasted Italy, 100-63, to advance to the semifinals.

After a rough game against Lithuania, the bench unit returned to its excellent form, as Austin Reaves had two of the early highlights with a stepback three and a big putback dunk as Team USA darted out to a big early advantage.

Joining Reaves in having a big game off the bench was Tyrese Haliburton, who knocked down six of his eight attempts from three on his way to 18 points, as well as dishing out five assists to lead the team.

However, the star of the game was Mikal Bridges, as he exploded for 24 points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes of play, scoring 14 in the first half and adding 10 in the third quarter before heading to the bench.

The Americans length and athleticism was just overwhelming for Italy, which simply couldn’t do much on either end of the floor, and seemingly every time Team USA got a big defensive play, they turned it into quick offense on the other end — with Paolo Banchero delivering two big highlights to twist the knife against an Italian squad he turned down.

It was the dominant performance expected of USA Basketball, and they clearly enjoyed going up against a team without a dominant paint presence. Their ability to beat smaller teams hasn’t been in question this tournament, but it’s still good to see them take care of business and look much more engaged from the jump, not allowing even a sliver of hope for Italy to pull off the upset. Now the Americans will await the winner of Germany-Latvia in the semifinals, with Serbia blasting Lithuania in the other quarterfinal on Tuesday and they will play the winner of Slovenia-Canada.

‘Everything Is Turning To Sh*t’ In The New ‘Loki’ Season 2 Teaser Trailer

With just a few weeks to go until the premiere of Loki Season 2, a new teaser shows the God of Mischief on his quest to survive a rapidly unraveling multiverse that has the Trickster God slipping in and out of the past, present, and future.

In the Season 1 finale, Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) made a calamitous decision that shattered reality and dumped Loki into a timeline where his Time Variance Authority partner Mobius doesn’t even recognize him. Season 2 will follow Loki as he attempts to fix his time-slipping problem and reunite with his old allies.

Unfortunately, as Sylvia so eloquently puts it in the new teaser, “Everything is turning to sh*t.”

That statement is punctuated by the increased presence of Jonathan Majors, who will play at least one Kang variant in the new season. As for his plans? That’s anyone’s guess.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Loki Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15 and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.

Loki Season 2 premieres October 6 on Disney+.
