The Weeknd Says He’s All Done Doing Features Forever (Unless One Artist Decides To Return To Music)

The Weeknd has appeared on a number of other artists’ songs over the past decade or so. In 2021, for example, he guested on tunes from Rosalía and FKA Twigs. He also just popped up on Travis Scott’s Utopia. It looks like that’s coming to an end, though, as The Weeknd just announced that after one more song, he’s all done doing features.

On social media, he shared a clip from his August 9 concert at PGE Narodowy in Warsaw, Poland. In it, he speaks to the audience, telling them he’s about to perform an unreleased song called “Another One Of Me.” He added, “I just want to say: This is going to be the last feature I ever do ever in my career, so I’m going to perform it for you guys tonight.”

There’s one artist who could get him to return to features, though: The post is captioned, “the final feature… unless daft punk ever get back together.”

The Weeknd previously debuted an earlier version of the song on the Kiss Land episode of his Apple Music Beats 1 radio show Memento Mori. Another version later appeared, with vocals from Diddy, in a Beats By Dre advertisement. As a fan on Reddit notes, several different versions of the song have surfaced, including ones featuring French Montana, Belly, and 21 Savage. As for the final song, it is not clear when it will be released or who else appears on it. setlist.fm indicates the August 9 performance was the third time The Weeknd has played the song live, with the previous two instances also happening this month.

Meanwhile, Samra Origins, the coffee brand The Weeknd launched earlier this year, just partnered with Blue Bottle Coffee to launch Samra Origins Craft Instant Coffee, which press materials describe as “a limited-edition run of 100% Ethiopia Natural METAD Yirgacheffe Gedeb Chelebesa.” More information can be found here.

Playoff Lessons: Mikal Bridges Is Learning To Adapt To Life As A Primary Scorer

In the first half of his first playoff game as a team’s primary scorer, Mikal Bridges logged the second-most shots of his postseason career with 16. By the end of the Philadelphia 76ers’ four-game dispatching of his Brooklyn Nets, Bridges hoisted 77 shots and averaged 23.5 points on 53.9 percent true shooting.

The 26 year old’s introduction to playoff basketball as an offensive pillar ebbed and flowed. His moments of stardom were balanced with moments of struggles and frustration. Philadelphia flung an array of coverages at him defensively. Brooklyn’s ancillary personnel were limited. Bridges witnessed all of this and rode the roller coaster of volatility. As he and the Nets approach his first full season commandeering the foremost scoring load, there’s much to glean and apply moving forward from those four playoff outings.

To open Game 1, the Sixers elected to lock and trail Bridges with Tobias Harris while keeping Joel Embiid in drop coverage. Brooklyn schemed many of his touches on the move and he took advantage of the defensive gambit en route to 23 points on 10-for-16 shooting before intermission.

His mid-range pull-up is the bedrock of his prolific scoring leap. He reminded everyone of that throughout the first round whenever Philadelphia failed to curb his airspace and chase him over the top of screens. Grant him room between ~4 and ~16 feet, and he’ll bury you. He’s a killer scorer if he finds his midrange groove and can render middling drop coverage a liability (not all of these clips are drop coverage, but the circumstances of drop coverage remain).

As the series progressed, however, the Sixers shifted away from lock and trail and drop against Bridges. The change began as quickly as the second half of Game 1 and played a significant role in him scoring just seven points on two shots after the break. They switched and trapped him more frequently and shaded strong-side help or stunted on his interior endeavors to exploit his tenuous handle and unthreatening burst. Harris top-locked him and twisted his rhythm ajar via physicality. Addressing that aversion to physicality will be vital.

Bridges wasn’t a lost cause trying to score against switches because he’s so adept operating off-balance. But he encountered far less vacant real estate to generate clean looks from midrange, which is a primary reason for his quiet second half in Game 1 and 47.5 percent true shooting over the final three contests. He has to become less susceptible to being mitigated by switches and let his off-balance shot-making be a feature not the norm.

Brooklyn must also build a roster better suited to expose defenses for trapping him. The lack of surrounding ball-handling depth hinders him as both an on and off-ball scorer. He should be empowered to blend the old and the new of his repertoire.

Growing as an off-the-bounce shooter beyond the arc would vary his pull-up attack and transition away from such reliance on the midrange for his creation. Following his move to the Nets, 9.5 percent of his field goals were pull-up threes during the regular season. In the playoffs, that mark perked up to 11.7 percent. Across 31 appearances with Brooklyn, he knocked down 40.4 percent (23-for-57) of his pull-up triples.

If the goal is to expand the possibilities within the midrange itself, tightening his handle and establishing more comfort probing inside or near the paint would broaden his options. Plenty of his drives spiraled against the Sixers because of well-timed stunts disrupting his handle and revealed an erratic “shot or bust” mentality. Refining his pacing and applying his sinewy, flexible frame to decelerate downhill without reaching a full stop would behoove his game.

It’s obviously much more arduous for a 6’6 wing to incorporate that probing prowess than guards. Yet the ability to snake ball-screens and survey the opposition while remaining a scoring presence — opening up the floor for shooters and rollers — would considerably elevate Bridges’ initiator potential. Methodical tempo and newfound handling of physicality can accomplish that.

The most encouraging part of his first-round showing was the real-time development. In the later stages of the series, he seemed to maintain a live dribble more often to preserve chances beyond a shot for himself. Although skip passes are still a pretty wobbly adventure that he must refine, particularly because the Nets tout plenty of credible off-ball shooters who occupy the corners, his willingness to get off the ball in a timely fashion evolved.

Streamlining those flashes of a wily cadence and patient playmaking into consistent sequences should be the priority. His chemistry with Nicolas Claxton and Cameron Johnson are boons as well, and I’m particularly intrigued to track the headway he achieves with Claxton next season.

I’ve long recognized some parallels between Bridges and Khris Middleton offensively. One of the relevant distinguishers, though, is Middleton’s face-up and mid-post scoring. Wielding the requisite footwork and release, he’s stable, potent, and at home there. I’m left wondering whether Bridges could integrate that into his wheelhouse as a means of creation. It’d station him in the midrange without demanding he venture there on his own or holster a live dribble.

Middleton’s strength advantage and shrewd use of his frame are currently the crucial differentiators. They circle back to Bridges’ discordance playing slowly inside the arc off the bounce and need to effectively brandish his size more regularly. If he could function in the midrange without spotlighting his creaky handle, that could quell some concerns. He struggles to leverage his frame and protect his dribble simultaneously.

This is his first offseason working through the lens of primary scorer responsibilities, which presumably warps his training habits and goals to prepare for a different role than prior years. He thrives off of midrange volume. Philadelphia curtailed some of his avenues to operate in the midrange. Maybe he embeds another dimension to produce from his haven.

In a matter of months, Bridges bounced from complementary role player on a team with title aspirations to star scorer on a team staving off the Play-In Tournament. That’s a monumental transition and one he, by and large, handled masterfully. The swiftness and challenge of the change cannot be discounted.

As a result, his playoff landscape was completely rearranged. He’d barely been afforded time to respond to regular season defensive adjustments as the focal point, let alone postseason alterations. The growing pains were expectedly harsh during the final 3.5 games of round one. Every tactic the Sixers employed should help inform how he adapts and continues diversifying his offensive portfolio in the coming years. The playoffs teach lessons. Bridges received quite the detailed, beneficial lesson across a week’s span this past April.

Woman shares eye-opening video of what a birthday surprise from an abusive partner looks like

Being in an abusive relationship isn’t typically something people flaunt around social media or their personal lives. Abuse can be difficult to recognize sometimes, even when you’re the one being abused, especially if the abuse isn’t physical. Emotional and verbal abuse behind closed doors while the abuser behaves differently in public can make you feel like your own perception can’t be trusted.

Lindsay Goodman reposted a video from January 2022, where she reveals the behind-the-scenes of a birthday surprise from her abusive ex-partner. Goodman’s birthday is August 10, and she has been reposting the video on her birthday every year to show her growth since leaving her partner.

Without the text overlay explaining what was going on, the birthday surprise seemed like an extremely sweet gesture filmed from the ex-partner’s perspective. The original video has over 2.2 million likes and more than 13.4K comments on TikTok.

In the video, Goodman rounds the corner smiling, seemingly nervously as she sees her ex-partner filming her.

“Coming home from doing an activity alone because your partner didn’t want to go,” the text on the screen says. “Confused that they actually did something for you. Trying to look happy and thankful, but suspicious at the same time.”

Goodman also includes little notes in the corner of the screen that explains she’s nervously eating berries and the flowers she’s holding are ones she bought for herself. She reveals that she isn’t sure if her partner will remain nice after the camera stops or if this will be the last time they’ll be nice for a while.

The video ends with Goodman blowing out the candle on her cupcake, still smiling and nervously eating berries. Her short, vulnerable post proves that all abuse doesn’t look like bruises and cop calls. Sometimes it looks like outward smiles while you’re internally terrified for the moment to pass.

The First ‘Blue Beetle’ Reactions Praise The Latino Superhero Film As An ‘Electric’ And ‘Exhilarating’ DC Standout

The first reactions to Blue Beetle are rolling in, and critics seem to be on board with the latest DC Comics film.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto and starring Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña in the title role, Blue Beetle faces an uphill battle after Shazam!: Fury of the Gods and The Flash failed to ignite the box office and raised concerns about the future of the DC Universe. However, judging by the social media reactions rolling in, Blue Beetle manages to shake off the baggage of its predecessors thanks to its strong Latino representation and Maridueña’s performance.

You can see what some of the critics are saying below:

“#BlueBeetle is here & Latinos FINALLY have a superhero of their own reflected on the big screen,” Umberto Gonzalez tweeted. “The film is so incredibly good, so unique & delivers on all fronts giving the superhero genre much needed sazón! The film’s Tangerine Dream inspired synthwave score also rocks!”

“#BlueBeetle is an electric and thrilling ride, Xolo Maridueña was born to play Jaime Reyes!” Ben Rolph wrote. “It’s a spellbinding origin story, made and steered by the excellent Angel Manuel Soto. Loved the film and what it teases about the future of DC.”

“The #BlueBeetle movie is mostly a blast,” Brandon Davis tweeted. “Some is too silly or childish for me, a lot had me laughing loud (George Lopez!). Practical suit rocks. The Latino representation is awesome. Enjoyed the family-centric stakes, solid action beats. Overall, it’s fun.”

“#BlueBeetle stands out from previous DC entries & its mostly due to the Latin flavor, let’s be real,” Genesis O’Neill wrote. “It’s funny, emotional & the action scenes w BB are amazing! The cast is beautiful, but Maridueña & López SHINE. Can’t wait to see more! Congrats al BORI @angelmanuelsoto LFG!!”

Ron DeSantis Getting Called ‘Pudding Fingers’ By Protestors Somehow Wasn’t The Most Embarrassing Thing To Happen To Him Today

What’s the deal with Ron DeSantis running for president?

The sad meatball governor made a campaign stop in Iowa on Friday. It did not go well. DeSantis was greeted with megaphone chants of “Pudding Fingers” and “Ron DeFascist” (no meatball?) from protestors in the lightly attended crowd.

According to Politico, “At the DeSantis event, Kara Ryan of Des Moines said she and her aunt, Heather Ryan, were there on behalf of a political action committee called ‘B*tches Get Stuff Done,’ that supports abortion rights.” A DeSantis supporter tried to knock the megaphone out of Heather’s hand, but she was determined to get her message out, turning what sounds like “go back to Florida” into “get the f*ck away from me.”

The New York Times detailed the scene:

“Racist, fascist, anti-gay, Ron DeSantis, go away,” they chanted. At one point, a minor fracas ensued between one of the women and a man who was there to welcome DeSantis. Handlers for the governor and local law enforcement stepped in between them. The governor’s remarks were mostly muffled by the chants, and his aides quickly escorted journalists away from the scene to an awaiting travel van.

At the same event, DeSantis stood in front of a brick wall and gave described as the “worst stand up set of all time.” The tepid applause is even more embarrassing than being called “Pudding Fingers.” He must be saving his A material (“I identify as American/patriot”) for the debates.

50 Cent Hasn’t Collaborated With Lil Wayne Yet, But He’s Hoping It’ll Happen In The Near Future

Based on the titling of 50 Cent’s current live show excursion, The Final Lap Tour, fans may assume that the rapper-turned-mogul will hang up his microphone to focus on his film and television ventures. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. During a recent interview, the Queens native revealed his appearance on Nas’ album Magic 2 was just the beginning.

When Capital XTRA’s hosts Robert Bruce and Shayna Marie asked if there were any other musical acts he’d be interested in working with, he immediately answered that he’d like to collaborate on a new song with Lil Wayne.

“I didn’t do [a song] with Wayne directly. He’s one of the ones that, like — Wayne has been trained,” said 50 as he praised the Young Money Records star.

If a record does come from this shoutout, it wouldn’t be the first time the pair rubbed shoulders. 50 Cent revealed that they rocked the same stages earlier in his career. “People don’t know. I was on the Cash Money/Ruff Ryders tour — before they opened the curtain. Before the show started, people were still walking in and sh*t, and I was doing my sh*t,” he joked.

He continued, “They thought I was lightweight, but then I came back around.” Even back then, 50 Cent had the foresight that he’d shift the culture of hip-hop.

(Worth noting is that there is a bit of beef history with 50 and Weezy.)

That’s how it’s done. The fact that he’s shy and hates performing and still offered to accompany that kiddo speaks volumes. Well done, Mama.

3. Wallace the Uber driver gamified his passengers’ ride experience

Three cheers for Wallace. Gotta love someone who loves their job this much. Read the full story here.

Bamboozled by the sideways skiddily daps. Perfection. Read the full story here.

7. Woman’s neighbor tells her to wear her yellow dress to her art show opening for the best reason

Scroll through for the whole story. What a sweet surprise (though, according to people in the comments who live or have lived in Ithaca, not at all surprising—apparently quite a wonderful community there).

How incredibly special. Also, go Grandma! Looking amazing at 96.

9. Man shares his dad’s rave review of ‘Barbie,’ in which he calls her more of a superhero than Superman

Wow. He apparently really liked it. Pretty amazing considering he’s not the target demographic for the film.

Chappell Roan’s New Single And Video ‘Hot to Go!’ Is An Enthusiastic Anthem About ‘Being Hot’

Chappell Roan has been turning heads with alluring songs like “Naked In Manhattan” and “My Kink Is Karma.” These beloved tracks will appear on her debut LP The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, which she announced recently and described as a “14-song album holding stories of unearthing my true self and fearlessly embracing queerness.”

She’s back with an anthemic new single called “Hot To Go!” It bursts with her vivacious energy that fans love her for as she makes her own danceable chant: “H-O-T-T-O-G-O / Snap n’ clap n’ and touch your toes,” she sings against buzzing synthesizers. In the music video, she’s as enthusiastic and entertaining as the music, donning an array of glittery outfits.

Chappell said about the song in a statement, “I wrote this song so I could live out my cheerleader fantasy! I just wanted to make something simple and silly that I could do with the audience because I’m a huge fan of audience participation. Also, selfishly (and shamelessly) wanted to bounce around on stage singing a song about being hot.”

Watch the video for “Hot To Go!” above.

The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess is out 9/22 via Amusement/Island Records. Find more information here.

Big Thief’s ‘Dragon New Warm Mountain…’ Era Is Over, And What’s Next Might Be Even Better

Los Angeles saw the end of several eras on Wednesday night. At SoFi Stadium, Taylor Swift concluded the initial leg of her Eras Tour, which will likely go down as the most significant concert run of this century so far. But at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, a much more hushed era — but just as musically exciting — also ended, the Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You cycle from Big Thief.

One of the best albums of the last few years, Big Thief’s masterpiece saw multiple years of support, but both Buck Meek and Adrianne Lenker announced that the band would be taking a year off from touring following the sold-out show (don’t worry too much, the time off will include at least the upcoming Buck Meek solo album). Lenker went on to thank the band’s crew, management, and even merch person by name, noting that it was an emotional moment to close this chapter. But anyone who’s been following Big Thief knows that the band’s eras are much more blurry than other artists. At this point in the tour, nearly half the set was comprised of music that has yet to be released, following the Animal Collective model of touring the album to come as much as supporting the album released.

All that said, it was a magnificent 90-minute set in a perfect atmosphere, with Lenker acknowledging the weirdness of playing where people are buried (and possibly performing for their spirits). Early in the set, the band set the bar high by inviting a fan, Sophia, to the stage to sing harmonies on “Sparrow” — and she knocked it out of the park. Elsewhere, “Simulation Swarm,” “Not,” “Masterpiece,” “Spud Infinity,” “Certainty,” the recent “Vampire Empire,” and the finale, “Change” all elated fans ranging from children to grandparents. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Big Thief is the best band in the world right now and it isn’t particularly close. Their rest is much deserved, and based on the new material, their next era might raise the bar even higher.
